I am sure everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with all the turkey trimmings Just around the corn

I am sure everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with all the turkey trimmings Just around the corner is Christmas and we start over again with all our wonderful dishes. However, this year might just be the time to give some attention to substituting some healthy foods along with what we normally make.

Looking thru some periodicals, I was struck by all the articles that are written on super foods and anti-aging. They are quite ordinary supermarket foods we see everyday but may not have known the value they play in our health. Substituting some of these super foods may well be the gift we need to give ourselves.

A super food is defined as “nature loading all the nutritional necessities into one neat package“. This takes in nutrients, fiber and antioxidants. These are the powerhouses your body is looking for in foods and is often times neglected

Antioxidants serve to protect the body from wear and tear and strengthen the immune system, muscles, bones and skin. They do this by stabilizing cell-damaging free radicals that form as we use energy and age. Free radicals are a process of oxidation and form from sugary foods, stress, extended sun exposure and certain environmental chemicals to name a few. The more antioxidants in the body, the less damage free radicals can cause.
Try some of these foods when substituting holiday treats…blueberries, broccoli, blackberries, spinach, and kale.

Nutrients are vitamins, such as vitamin A, Vitamin C. B vitamin folate and minerals like magnesium and potassium. Also, are Omega 3 and healthy fats like olive oil and canola oil.

Fiber is very important as it aids in digestion and helps with absorption of nutrients. It also increases insulin efficiency and feelings of fullness.
These are what you body needs…see what you can substitute and start on a road to wellness. This is a start…we learn more as we do more.

Flax seeds come from the Linum usitatissimum plant, or the Linseed plant. They come in two basic var

Flax seeds come from the Linum usitatissimum plant, or the Linseed plant. They come in two basic varieties: brown and yellow/golden. Most types have similar nutritional characteristics and the same amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. The only exception is a type of yellow flax called Linola or solin, which has a completely different oil structure and is very low in omega-3. So when you are purchasing flax seeds, make sure to buy the correct type! Flax seeds contain high levels of lignans and Omega-3 fatty acids. Lignans benefit the heart, have anti-cancer properties and studies found reduced growth in specific types of tumors. However, there is a lot of confusion as to the pros and cons of flax seeds for those who have prostate cancer, so please consult your doctor.

How to incorporate flax seeds into your diet:

I suggest grinding the seeds to help your body process the nutrients. I use an electric herb/spice grinder, but a mortar and pestle would work just fine. Once you have prepared the seeds, go ahead and add them into whatever food you happen to be making! It’s that simple. Flax seeds have a very light, nutty taste, so they work really well in sweet or savory dishes. You can mix them into your rice, vegetables, any baked goods, or whatever you want. Just make sure your diet includes lots of liquids to avoid intestinal blockage.
Some ideas:

+ Sprinkle ground flax seed on your cereal, oatmeal, soup, or just about anything.
+ Sprout the seeds and throw on to your salad or veggie dish.
+ Include in any other recipe when a nutty flavor is preferred.
+ If you like to have a morning shake, add a tablespoon of flax seeds as you’re blending the other ingredients.
+ If you like your rice to have a little flavor, add a dash of ground flax, ground rosemary and oregano, and a pinch of garlic and chili pepper seeds. This adds a simple yet savory taste to your rice that’ll complement all styles of food (Asian, Mexican, Italian, or Arabic dishes).

If for some reason you’re not able to incorporate flax seeds into your dishes, or you just don’t like the nutty taste, you can get flax oil capsules from any health stores. Keep in mind that they are more concentrated, so follow the dosage guidelines very carefully.

And how many of you like to bake? It’s fun isn’t it…until you get that dreadful feeling in your stomach as you realize that you’re short on eggs. Or maybe you are vegan, or are trying to watch your cholesterol, or you just plain forgot eggs when you were at the supermarket. Don’t worry, you can use ground flax seeds as a substitute.

1 tablespoon ground/milled flax seed + 3 tablespoons water = 1 egg

Super Fruits have exotic names and are from faraway places. The out-of-the-ordinary nature of these

Super Fruits have exotic names and are from faraway places. The out-of-the-ordinary nature of these fruits adds to their appeal.A definition might include: a food that has exceptional nutrient density; a food that has extremely powerful antioxidant capacity; or a food that has the potential for reducing disease risk.

Can any food meet all of these requirements? The answer is definitely YES! Most Super Fruits deliver a full day’s requirement for specific nutrients in a single serving. They also “put out the fire” of inflammation by generously donating anti-inflammatory antioxidants wherever there is a need. Antioxidants help fight the battle against the calendar by turning back the clock on premature aging.

Super Fruits are daily insurance against the antioxidant debt that leads to disability and disease. These nutrient-dense foods allow us to catch up on any antioxidant deficiency we face because of stress, pollution and toxins in our environment, or simply overexertion. Super Fruits work to reduce inflammation, providing us with protection from disease and disability, as well as a little protection from the calendar by reversing premature aging in our cells. As you know, we all need the nutrients provided in fruits and vegetables. Health experts agree that disease prevention is best effected with the following amount of fruits and vegetables daily: * Children: five servings * Women: seven servings * Men: nine servings According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, North American adults eat less than three servings of fruits and vegetables daily. This habit has caused the death rate from heart disease, cancer and many other causes to skyrocket. Worse yet, those who choose to reject the antioxidant protection from fruits and vegetables end their lives with nine to 17 years of disability. When consumption is high, disease incidence is low. Modern medical research confirms that people who eat Super Fruits regularly enjoy a reduction in diseases ranging from Alzheimer’s and heart disease to leukemia and prostate cancer. Of course, we still need to make dietary choices that give us a healthy advantage. In the context of a healthy lifestyle, Super Fruits can be a welcome addition. Take a variety of Super Fruits to take advantage of the strengths offered by each one. Use them daily to ensure a life of wellness and vitality!

Amaranth

Amaranth has some interesting history. Amaranth is an ancient grain used by the Pre Columbian and in Mesoamerica. Mesoamerican cultures believed amaranth to be right up there with corn when it comes to sacred foods so naturally, it was used in ritual ceremony. Of course the Catholics frowned on this, as they did on all Mesoamerican rituals and proceeded to burn the grain all over the continent ( they burnt the libraries too). For many years amaranth all but vanished as did much of this amazing culture. Fortunately, some remote villages in Peru and Mexico continued to cultivate amaranth, or it would be extinct.

Amaranth is a tall plant with very broad leaves. Each plant produces thousands of seeds. The Aztecs used it to make a beer, the leaves were boiled or fried, and used in foods or healing teas and potions , good for everything from respiratory ailments to STD. The seeds were (and still are) popped like popcorn, and used in the still popular sweet called alegria.

Amaranth flour is a non gluten flour that can be used to high protein muffins, bars, and cookies. It requires the addition of other flours in order to use for making breads. It is high in iron, protein, and has three times the calcium of milk.

We use in it in Organic Select kitchen to increase the protein content of the breads, and in a high protein breakfast drink with oats, nuts, soy milk and a bit of vanilla… sometimes we throw in some fruit and zap it in a blender.

Chia Seeds

For centuries the tiny little seed known as Chia was used as a staple food by the Indians of the south west and Mexico. Known as the running food, its use as a high energy endurance food has been recorded as far back as 3,500 years. It was said the Aztec warriors subsisted on the Chia seed during the conquests. The Indians of the south west would eat as little as a teaspoon full when going on a 24hr. march. Indians running form the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only bring the Chia seed for food. There is reference of the use of Chia seed in the Florentine Codex.

If you try mixing a spoonful of Chia in a glass of water and leaving it for approximately 30 minutes or so, when you return the glass will appear to contain not seeds or water, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the Chia. Research believe this same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when food containing these gummy fibers, known as mucilage, are eaten. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar.

In addition to the obvious benefits for diabetics, this slowing in the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar offers the ability for creating endurance. Carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in our bodies. Prolonging their conversion into sugar stabilizes metabolic changes, diminishing the surges of highs and lows creating a longer duration in their fueling effects, and it has a mild taste.

One of the exceptional qualities of the Chia seed is its hydrophilic properties, having the ability to absorb more than 12 times its weigh in water. Its ability to hold on to water offers the ability to prolong hydration. Fluids and electrolytes provide the environment that supports the life of all the body’s cells. Their concentration and composition are regulated to remain as constant as possible. With Chia seeds, you retain moisture; regulate, more efficiently, the body’s absorption of nutrients and body fluids. Because there is a greater efficiency in the utilization of body fluids, the electrolyte balance is maintained.

As a source of protein, the Chia, after ingestion, is digested and absorbed very easily. This results in rapid transport to the tissue and utilization by the cells. This efficient assimilation makes the Chia very effective when rapid development of tissue takes place, primarily during growth periods if children and adolescents. Also for the growth and regeneration of tissue during pregnancy and lactation, and this would also include regeneration of muscle tissue for conditioning, athletes, weight lifters, etc.

Another unique quality if the Chia seed is its high oil content and the richest vegetables source for the essential omega-3 fatty acid. It has approximately three to ten times the oil concentrations of most grains and one and a half to two times the protein concentrations of other grains. These oils, unsaturated fatty acids, are the essential oils your body needs to help emulsify and absorb the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, & K. Chia seeds are rich in the unsaturated fatty acid, linoleic, which the body cannot manufacture. When there are rich amounts of linoleic acid sufficiently supplied to the body trough diet, linoleic and arachidonic acids can be synthesized from linoleic acid.

Chia seed imparts power and energy to the user. I’ve used it for years. My first Mexican husband turned me on to it, he would simply add it to our lemon water and it would puff up. Not all chia seeds are the same, but generally the mild taste makes it easy to put in sauces, smoothies, breads, puddings, and whatever you want. They won’t really change the taste, but will add to the nutrition. Chia seed is great for those who want to increase their energy and wish to increase their stength and muscle tone. Really a wonder food for those who work out. We use in the mornings just before we go to the gym for the hydration and energy without the fuss.

Last weekend I went to my daughter Natasha’s Ganesh Retreat in Gloucestershire, I knew that it was going to be amazing as everyone who had done the previous one had raved about how it had changed their lives and how unbelievable it was but i was not prepared for how outstanding it was.

I am someone who likes fast exercise and doing things constantly, but equally i know that what i needed more than anything was to learn how to stop ……. I knew that it would be a massive challenge for anyone especially Natasha to get me to do this! But she and her team, consisting of an incredible healer, a shiatsu masseur, a yoga teacher and organic nutritionist chef completely moved me and changed my whole outlook. I felt extraordinary by sunday night. Having loved all of the treatments, I left feeling completely exhilarated fresh, rested and so full of energy.

I have managed to stick to everything they taught me and have even managed to meditate every morning even though i have only managed 5 minutes. But as they taught us 5 minutes is better than nothing and it is a great way to start the morning.

I shall, for sure be going back again. It was a TREAT from start to finish I LOVED IT ……………..

Every couple of weeks the lifestyle or health section of every major newspaper in the world will feature an article about this month’s latest superfoods – the foods you should be eating as they contain a chemical that fights cancer or melts fat or some other amazing health benefit.

The latest superfood article that is doing the rounds of the world’s major newspapers is about Surprising Superfoods – foods that everyone thinks are bad for you but actually have good qualities. My main problem about this article is not that the information is incorrect as I have no way of knowing the factual content of this article because the studies aren’t listed, but because this article offers conflicting information.

Looking at the list of foods that people assume are good for you, but apparently aren’t – we have 6 entries – Tofu, Orange Juice, Apples, Smoothies, Wholemeal bread, Yoghurt and Sushi. Of these 6, the major problem with 4 of them (OJ, Apples, Smoothies, Wholemeal bread and Yoghurt) is the amount of sugar contains in these products (most of it naturally occurring by the way). The article states that even those these foods are packed with vitamins and other essential ingredients for good health, they are very bad for you cause they are high in sugar. You get the impression that you would be lucky not to slip into a diabetic coma from eating one apple. Wholemeal bread also gets singled out for not only being “laden” with sugar but the fibre in it is very bad if you are constipated making it an extreme danger food, one would imagine, for the constipated diabetic .

Now after you are done rolling your eyes at the stupidity of labeling food as bad because it contains naturally occurring fructose and glucose, you head over to the good food list. Topping the list is Jam which they admit in the first three words is “undeniably high in sugar”, but due to the cancer fighting properties of pectin it is okay to ignore all the added sugar in this food. This is my WTF moment about this article. How can you go on for a whole section about how bad sugar is and why you shouldn’t basically eat fruit high in sugar and then say that it is perfectly fine to eat jam even though it contains lots of added sugar?? Either eating food high in sugar is bad thing regardless of whether that food contains good stuff like vitamins or it is okay to eat food high in sugar because it does contain good stuff – you can’t have it both ways.

Articles on so-called “superfoods” annoy me because they usually focus on one small chemical property contained in the food and claim that it will cure cancer or make you lose weight. Rarely, if ever, do they actually explain how much of that chemical is in the food and how much of the food you would need to consume to get any cancer fighting or weight loss benefit from it – now that would actually make an interesting article. Then the next month, the amazing superfood from the previous month is completely forgotten and is replaced by a brand new superfood with an even more amazing health benefit. The best thing to do is to ignore these “superfoods” and just eat a balanced diet containing a wide variety of foods. However, if you do need an excuse to eat that bar of dark chocolate feel free to assign it a random health benefit as I am sure that there will an article just around the corner proving it.

More oats and chia This was great because it was raw and still included oats. Having the oats become saturated by the almond milk overnight really worked! I added a few drops of stevia for some sweetness and raspberries because they are my fave. Yum!

Oats and Chia
serves 2-3

1 cups thick rolled oats (raw if you can find them)
1 cup almond milk, plus more for serving
1 1/2 tablespoon chia seeds
pinch of cinnamon
berries
stevia and/or agave to taste

I am medium bowl place the oats, chia and connamon. Add the almond milk and stir well. Let sit for 10 minutes and stir well again. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
In the morning stir again and then top with berries, stevia and/or agave for some sweetness.

As I plan my Thanksgiving Menu, I am reminded about the choices that we all make and the way a habit

As I plan my Thanksgiving Menu, I am reminded about the choices that we all make and the way a habit can so deeply become engrained into our daily lives.

In a family of four, I am the only one who has really embraced the power of a raw food lifestyle. Although I vary in the degree of raw % on a daily basis, my intent is clear to incorporate cleaner food choices for myself and my family into everything that I make. Since we are having company this holiday, and they each have very traditional SAD diets, I have decided to gently present RAW choices that are delicious and simple so everyone can enjoy the benefits without feeling the pressure of eating what the hostess prepares even if they don’t like it. That’s really the joy of Raw preparation. Pretty much everyone likes the ingredients, but they have never tried them together in a dish that hasn’t been cooked. For example, cooked carrots, peas and beans. Many people eat them cooked, but haven’t had the pleasure of a fresh sweet crunchy pea. Make selections this holiday that will showcase the simplicity of Raw and give your company a suprise with the new twist on traditional dishes, or add in a new dish like Matt Amsden’s cauliflower couscous, or fresh cranberry salad.

Tell me about your Raw Thanksgiving Menu.

Photo: an organic banana artistically displayed

Ever wonder where the expression “goin’ bananas” originated? A professor at CCNY (Community College of New York) has an answer for you. Here’s what he told his “Physiological Psych” class about “bananas.” The expression “goin’ bananas” is from the effects bananas have on the brain.

According to the professor: “Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.”

Energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. Bananas can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions:

1–Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

2–Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

3–Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

4–Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

5–Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Organic or not, bananas have some surprising uses! But, “never put your banana in the refrigerator!!!”

Flaxseed is available at supermarkets in Chennai and can be used to aid weight loss and fitness effo

Flaxseed is available at supermarkets in Chennai and can be used to aid weight loss and fitness efforts.

Why is Flaxseed a superfood?

Simply because it has the highest content of Omega – 3 fatty acids known. Amino acids are important nutrients which can be divided into two: Essential and Non-Essential. The non-essential amino acids are already present in us while essential amino acids include Omega- 6 and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-6 is obtained by our ingestion of oils such as Sunflower oil. However, the sources of Omega-3 are very few and so Flaxseeds are required.

Another benefit is that flaxseed also adds fiber to the diet, it has been known to take about three times its volume space once eaten and that gives a good full feeling.

The best way to ingest these is to roast them and grind into a powder and store. Add 1 to 2 tsp every day to any vegetable you are cooking and viola! the flaxseed increases your health tremendously.

However, do not go overboard with Flaxseeds as they are known to affect the thyroid. 1 to 2 tsp are recommended as a daily dosage and stick to that. There is no need to overdo a good thing and so negate any positive effects.

Since returning from Europe, I have been waking up really early. It’s cool for me, different from my norm which always included working lots of nights and slumbering through lots of mornings. Now I am all about eating breakfast to get myself geared up for the day. Waking at 8am and eating something before 9 leaves me hungry again by 10:30 or 11am…so, I eat breakfast until it seems time for something more like lunch.

In my recent brekkie explorations, I took this picture for fun. When a few friends saw it in the camera they were full of questions. ‘It’s just breakfast’, I thought, some of that sinful Fage Greek yogurt with pineapples, shredded (unsweetened) coconut, a drizzle of agave syrup and some chopped up lemon balm which is still growing in the yard. That damn yogurt is versatile, great with anything from fruit and nuts to cucumber and bulgur. I try to by a small container to control my consumption but I eat it so quickly that I just face facts and get a big one. And, by the way, I always buy full fat because the path of life wider than it is long. What?

I do believe eating yogurt regularly is great for your health, digestion, complexion, etc. but this day it was the gorgeous pineapple that stole the show, with the lemon balm making it super bright and fresh. The pineapple-herb combo was so interesting that I later made pineapple-parsley-lemon juice with what was left. It was excellent! I juiced some parsley leaves and lots of stems, about 1/3 cup total. Apparently parsley is one of those fantastical superfoods. It is full of vitamins A and C , plenty of minerals and provides a good supply of chlorophyll. Since it is quite concentrated, just an ounce of parsley juice is perfect mixed in with other juices. Its taste is faint but very fresh, maybe a good alternative for those who can’t take wheatgrass. Into the bright green juice, I juiced one peeled lemon and the rest of the fresh pineapple. Pineapple has all the vitamin C the Flintstones could ever offer, as well as minerals like chlorine and potassium with some extra beneficial enzymes. All that in a sweet, delicious, thirst-quenching beverage. The yield was just about a pint and it started my day off just about perfect.

Next time you go ‘juicing’ ask for a handful of parsley thrown in there. I have a juicer at home, the brand is Elite by Maxi Matic. A gift from some darling friends, it is several years old and still kicks! Look… My cute folding bike’s in the background. I call it Quickie.

Steak

Beef has a rep as a diet buster, but eating it may help you peel off pounds. In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women on a diet that included red meat lost more weight than those eating equal calories but little beef. “The protein in steak helps you retain muscle mass during weight loss,” says study author Manny Noakes, Ph.D. Try to consume local organic beef; it’s healthier for you and the environment.

Eat more Grill or broil a 4-ounce serving of top round or sirloin; slice thinly to top a salad, or mix with veggies for fajitas.

Eggs

Dig in to eggs, yolks and all: They won’t harm your heart, but they can help you trim inches. Women on a low-calorie diet who ate an egg with toast and jelly each morning lost twice as many pounds as those who had a bagel breakfast with the same number of calories but no eggs, a study from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge reports. “Egg protein is filling, so you eat less later in the day,” says David Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Bantam).

Eat more Omelets and scrambles are obvious choices, but if you can’t cook before work, bake a frittata on Sunday; chill it and nuke slices for up to a week. An easy recipe: Vegetable Frittata.

Kale

Long sidelined as a lowly garnish, this green belongs center stage on your plate. One raw chopped cup contains 34 calories and about 1.3 grams of fiber, as well as a hearty helping of iron and calcium. But kale’s earthy flavor might take some getting used to. Spinach, another nutrient powerhouse, is a milder-tasting option.

Eat more Mix chopped raw kale into cooked black beans, says Jennifer Iserloh, founder of Skinny Chef Culinary Ventures, in New York City. Or slice kale into thin strips, sauté it with vegetable broth and top with orange slices. Make it a meal by tossing the mix with quinoa.

Oats

“Oatmeal has the highest satiety ranking of any food,” Grotto says. “Unlike many other carbohydrates, oats—even the instant kind—digest slowly, so they have little impact on your blood sugar.” All oats are healthful, but the steel-cut and rolled varieties (which are minimally processed) have up to 5 grams of fiber per serving, making them the most filling choice. Instant oats contain 3 to 4 grams per serving.

Eat more “Instead of using breadcrumbs, add oats to meat loaf—about 1 cup for a recipe that serves eight,” Iserloh recommends. Or try her recipe for turkey and oatmeal meatballs.

Lentils

Lentils are a bona fide belly flattener. “They’re high in protein and soluble fiber, two nutrients that stabilize blood sugar levels,” says Tanya Zuckerbrot, R.D., author of The F-Factor Diet (Putnam Adult). “Eating them helps prevent insulin spikes that cause your body to create excess fat, especially in the abdominal area.”

Eat more There are many varieties of lentils, but red and yellow cook fastest (in about 15 to 20 minutes). Add cooked lentils to pasta sauce for a heartier dish, Zuckerbrot suggests. “Their mild flavor blends right in, and because they’re high in protein, you can skip meat altogether.”

Goji berries

These chewy, tart berries have a hunger-curbing edge over other fruit: 18 amino acids, which make them a surprising source of protein, says chef Sarah Krieger, R.D., spokeswoman in St. Petersburg, Florida, for the American Dietetic Association. (They also have more beta-carotene than carrots.) Snack on them midafternoon to stay satisfied until dinner. The calorie cost? Only 35 per tablespoon.

Eat more Mix 1/4 cup of the dried berries (from health food stores) with 1/4 cup raisins and 1/4 cup walnuts for a nourishing trail mix. Or for dessert, pour 1/4 cup boiling water into a bowl with 2 tbsp dried berries; let sit 10 minutes. Drain, then spoon over 1/2 cup lowfat vanilla frozen yogurt.

Wild salmon

Not only do fish fats keep your heart healthy, but they shrink your waist, too. “Omega-3 fatty acids improve insulin sensitivity—which helps build muscle and decrease belly fat,” Grotto explains. And the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns. Opt for wild salmon; it may contain fewer pollutants.

Eat more You don’t need to do much to enhance salmon’s taste, says Sidra Forman, a chef and writer in Washington, D.C. “Simple is best. Season a fillet with salt and pepper, then cook it in a hot pan with 2 tsp oil for 1 to 3 minutes on each side.”

Apples

An apple a day can keep weight gain at bay, finds a study from Penn State University at University Park. People who chomped an apple before a pasta meal ate fewer calories overall than those who had a different snack. “Apples are high in fiber—4 to 5 grams each—which makes them filling,” says Susan Kraus, R.D., a clinical dietitian at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Plus, the antioxidants in apples may help prevent metabolic syndrome, a condition marked by excess belly fat or an “apple shape.”

Eat more Apples are the ideal on-the-go low-calorie snack. For a pielike treat, chop up a medium apple and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp allspice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Pop in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes.

Buckwheat pasta

Swap plain noodles for this hearty variety; you’ll slip into your skinny jeans in no time. “Buckwheat is high in fiber and, unlike most carbs, contains protein,” Zuckerbrot says. “Those two nutrients make it very satiating, so it’s harder to overeat buckwheat pasta than the regular stuff.”

Eat more Cook this pasta as you do rice: Simmer it, covered, over low heat. For a light meal, toss cooked buckwheat pasta with broccoli, carrots, mushrooms and onions. Or make buckwheat crepes using our tasty recipe.

Blueberries

All berries are good for you, but those with a blue hue are among the best of the bunch. They have the highest antioxidant level of all commonly consumed fruit, according to research from the USDA Agriculture Research Service in Little Rock, Arkansas. They also deliver 3.6 grams of fiber per cup. “Fiber may actually prevent some of the fat you eat from being absorbed because fiber pulls fat through the digestive tract,” Zuckerbrot says.

Eat more Instead of topping your cereal with fruit, fill your bowl with blueberries, then sprinkle cereal on top and add milk or yogurt, Iserloh recommends.

Almond butter

Adding this spread may lower bread’s glycemic index (a measure of a food’s effect on blood sugar). A study from the University of Toronto found that people who ate almonds with white bread didn’t experience the same blood sugar surges as those who ate only the slice. “The higher blood sugar levels rise, the lower they fall; that dip leads to hunger, causing people to overeat,” says study author Cyril Kendall, Ph.D. “Furthermore, blood sugar changes cause the body to make insulin, which can increase abdominal fat.”

Eat more Try it for a change from peanut butter in sandwiches, or make a veggie dip: Mix 1 tbsp almond butter with 2 tbsp fat-free plain yogurt, Iserloh suggests. Or add a dollop to oatmeal for flavor and protein.

Pomegranates

The juice gets all the hype for being healthy, but pomegranate seeds deserve their own spotlight. In addition to being loaded with folate and disease-fighting antioxidants, they’re low in calories and high in fiber, so they satisfy your sweet tooth without blowing your diet, Krieger says.

Eat more Pop the raw seeds on their own (many grocery stores sell them preshucked) as a snack at your desk. “Use them in salads instead of nuts,” Iserloh says. “They’re especially delicious on raw baby spinach with lemon–poppy seed dressing.” For another take on the seeds, use our easy recipe for sweet and spicy pomegranate salsa.

Chiles

One reason to spice up your meals: You’ll crank up your metabolism. “A compound in chiles called capsaicin has a thermogenic effect, meaning it causes the body to burn extra calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chiles,” Zuckerbrot explains. Plus, “you can’t gulp down spicy food,” she adds. “Eating slowly gives your brain time to register that your stomach is full, so you won’t overeat.”

Eat more Stuff chiles with cooked quinoa and marinara sauce, then roast them. To mellow a chile’s heat, grill it until it’s almost black, peel off charred skin and puree the flesh, Krieger says. Add the puree to pasta sauces for a one-alarm kick. Or stir red pepper flakes into any dish you enjoy.

Yogurt

Dietitians often refer to plain yogurt as the perfect food, and for good reason: With its trifecta of carbs, protein and fat, it can stave off hunger by keeping blood sugar levels steady. In a study from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, people on a low-calorie diet that included yogurt lost 61 percent more fat overall and 81 percent more belly fat than those on a similar plan but without yogurt.

Eat more “Use lowfat plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise in chicken or potato salad, or top a baked potato with a bit of yogurt and a squeeze of lemon juice,” Krieger says. You’ll save 4.7 grams of fat per tablespoon. Look for Greek yogurt, which has more protein than other versions.

Quinoa

Curbing hunger is as easy as piling your plate with this whole grain. It packs both fiber (2.6 grams per 1/2 cup) and protein, a stellar nutrient combo that can keep you satisfied for hours, Krieger says.

Eat more Serve quinoa instead of rice with stir-fries, or try Krieger’s take on a scrumptious hot breakfast: Cook 1/2 cup quinoa in 2/3 cup water and 1/3 cup orange juice for 15 minutes. Top with 1 tbsp each of raisins and chopped walnuts.

Sardines

These tiny fish are the unsung stars of the sea. They are high in protein and loaded with omega-3s, which also help the body maintain muscle. And they’re low in mercury and high in calcium, making them a smart fish pick for pregnant women. If the flavor doesn’t appeal to you, “soak them in milk for an hour; it will remove any trace of fishiness,” Iserloh says.

Eat more “Use sardines in recipes you like that call for anchovies, including Caesar salad and stuffing,” Iserloh says. Or make a sardine melt: Toss whole sardines with chopped onions, fresh herbs and diced bell peppers. Put the mixture on top of a slice of pumpernickel or rye bread, cover with a slice of cheddar and broil.

Tarragon

You can use this herb, a staple in French cooking, in place of salt in marinades and salad dressings. Excess sodium causes your body to retain water, so using less salt can keep bloating at bay. Plus, tarragon lends a sweet, licoricelike flavor to bland foods. (Use the French version of the herb when possible; it’s sweeter than other varieties.)

Eat more Rub 2 tbsp dried tarragon on chicken before baking or grilling. Or make a tasty dip by mixing 1 tsp chopped fresh tarragon into 4 oz lowfat plain yogurt and 1 tsp Dijon mustard, recommends Jacquelyn Buchanan, director of culinary development at Laura Chenel’s Chèvre, a fromagerie in Sonoma, California.

Parmesan

Drop that rubbery lowfat cheese and pick up the real stuff. Women who had one serving of whole milk or cheese daily were less likely to gain weight over time, a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds. Lowfat-dairy fans didn’t experience the same benefit. Whole dairy may have more conjugated linoleic acid, which might help your body burn fat. “Parmesan is so flavorful, it’s easy to stick to one serving,” Buchanan says.

Eat more “Grate Parmesan over roasted vegetables,” Buchanan offers. Or snack on a 1-ounce portion with an apple or a pear.

Avocado

Don’t let the fat content of an avocado (29 grams) scare you—that’s what makes it a top weight loss food, Kraus says. “The heart-healthy monounsaturated fat it contains increases satiety,” she says. And it’s terrific summer party food.

Eat more Add avocado to your sandwich instead of mayo for a creamy texture and a shot of flavor. Avocados do contain a lot of calories, so it’s best to watch your portions. One easy way to do it: Try Wholly Guacamole’s 100-calorie fresh guacamole packs ($3; grocery stores or WhollyGuac.com). They’re easy to pack in your lunch and pair with chopped vegetables.

Olive oil

Like avocados, olive oil has healthy fat that increases satiety, taming your appetite. But that’s hardly its only slimming feature. “Research shows it has anti-inflammatory properties,” Kraus says. Chronic inflammation in the body is linked to metabolic syndrome.

Eat more Drizzle your salad with olive oil and you’ll increase the antioxidant power of your veggies, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition notes. Or toss pasta with a few teaspoons of olive oil, fresh basil and sautéed garlic, Kraus suggests. Add this oil to your summer menus for a flatter tummy by fall.

Thanksgiving is a fantastic holiday to enjoy family, friends, and comfort foods.

But, according to the American Council on Exercise, the average American consumes 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving, which is the equivalent to eating 5.5 Big Macs from McDonald’s or 15 Supreme Tacos from Taco Bell.

The American Dietetic Association recommends starting your day with a small meal made up of elements from the whole grains, fruit, dairy and meat and beans groups. Then, instead of starving yourself the rest of the day, grab small, low-calorie snacks that will fuel your body until it’s time for the big feast. If you starve yourself before a big Thanksgiving meal, you’ll be more likely to overindulge when you finally do eat.

Try to make time for exercise during the day. Go for a walk, take a bike ride, or play games like touch football with family, friends and neighbors. Most communities will have 5K or 10K races or fun runs on Thanksgiving weekend. For a list of events in Maryland, check out the Maryland Running Guide’s November race calendar.

When dinnertime rolls around, choose your foods carefully. Eat mindfully: chew slowly, savor your food, and recognize when you’re full and stop eating. Take time in between bites to talk to friends and family. And don’t deprive yourself of foods you love. You don’t have to skip the stuffing or pumpkin pie, but load up on healthier, nutrient-rich Thanksgiving superfoods like sweet potatoes, winter squash, broccoli, green beans, and cranberries.

Finally, accept the fact that it’s a holiday. Don’t stress or feel overly guilty if you indulged more than you usually would. Instead of panicking or drastically altering your diet for the rest of the weekend, make an effort to eat healthier for the next couple of days.
