Plenty of surprises abound in this thrilling chapter in the Batman Beyond universe.

This movie is brilliant, pure and simple.

I’ve seen both the regular and the uncut versions of this film and it’s the uncut version that’s being reviewed here (the regular is virtually the same and has only a few altered scenes).

The uncut version doesn’t hold back and isn’t sensitive to the viewer’s eyes. This one’s much more violent than the regular version. In the original release, certain events were only implied. In this one, they are shown. (If anything, I was surprised at how graphic this cartoon was compared to the Batman Beyond and Batman: TAS episodes.)

Ah, yes, the joys of direct-to-DVD releases.

The Batman in Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis, is real. You care about him, you relate to him. You want to be him even when the tension mounts between him and his mentor, Bruce Wayne.

The Joker’s nasty in this and once more Mark Hamill, with that creepy laugh of his, reminds us why he was born to play the Joker. The dialogue, the jokes—utterly fantastic!

The story is stellar, with multiple plots going on at once. It also answers the questions you have about the fate of the characters from Batman: TAS, which had a series finale that fell flat. (It was just another episode, really.)

The first time I saw this film I couldn’t believe what happened to one of the Bat regulars. It still blows me away every time I see it.

Ryan Kwanten in Griff The Invisible

Filming is soon due to wrap on the highly original, new Aussie flick, Griff The Invisible, a quirky yet thrilling story of an uncharacteristic superhero fighting for freedom and justice in an otherwise mundane world. Fresh from the set is a sneak-peek image of the crime-fighting superhero played by Ryan Kwanten, delivering the intensely penetrating gaze of Griff from behind his daily crime-sourcing reference.

Australian Ryan Kwanten would have to be pretty familiar to audiences by now as the overly amorous, dumb-but-loveable, redneck Southerner Jason Stackhouse in the hit HBO vampire series TrueBlood, co-starring Anna Paquin. Given Kwanten’s ease in portraying such an audacious character, it comes as no surprise that next up he is set to star in the title role of Griff.

Speaking about his character, Ryan Kwanten said, “By day, Griff works in an office. By night, he is a superhero – or is he? It was this question that attracted me to the role. Griff is such an original and boundless character to play… Every boy dreams of being a superhero and I’ve accepted my mission to bring this one to life.”

Despite its superhero premise, this film is, at its core, a love story that has Griff’s world turned on its head when he meets beautiful young scientist Melody, played by Maeve Dermody (Beautiful Kate, Blackwater). It is a story that challenges conformity in favour of being yourself, and which advocates finding happiness with people that allow you to be who you choose to be. The supporting cast includes Patrick Brammall and Toby Schmitz.

Griff The Invisible is the debut feature film of writer/director Leon Ford, who is better known for his acting credits (Tsunami: The Aftermath, Stepfather Of The Bride, Changi, the upcoming Beneath Hill 60), but follows up on his writing/directing short film effort Katoomba which picked up awards at the Sydney Film Festival and AFI Awards.

Griff is produced by Nicole O’Donohue, through Ford and O’Donohue’s collaborative production company Green Park Pictures, with executive producers Jan Chapman and Scott Meek also backing the project. It was developed with the assistance of Screen Australia through the Indivision Script Lab 2008, and will be distributed by Transmission Films.

“Griff The Invisible is guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen on screen before – no pun intended!” said Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten of Transmission Films. “We can’t wait to get this film to audiences in 2010.”

The Invisible is to be released nationally in late 2010.

Today’s listen to this an 80’s cover by a man who ironically does one of the best 80’s superstar impressions. Miles Fisher who many of you probably know as Tom Cruise in Superhero Movie (that clip can be seen here) or in Mad Men, is actually a great singer, and his cover of Talking Heads – This is The Place is catchy as hell and I guarantee even if you don’t like it first listen.. it will stick in your head.

Slashfilm ran a piece about Fisher not too long ago praising him as the best Tom Cruise impressionist ever, I hope he can losethe stereotype though because he is a talented artist.

Because I have to…

Yes, it happened again. Once more has the film industry been hit by yet another parody and what appears to be a bad one at that. This Stone Village Pictures and Essential Environment production, directed by Bo Zenga (Scary Movie), comes a film that takes honoured and respected horror film monsters and subsequently ruins the entirety of their credibility. Is anyone else curious why Mr. Zenga was dropped for the Scary Movie sequels?

The fate of this somewhat ludicrously disastrous film is already set in stone, much like it’s unpopular cousins; ‘Epic, Disaster, Date and Superhero Movie‘ and most recently ‘Meet The Spartans’ (almost tripling it’s budget, but in that respect, Date movie quadrupled its budget). Of course, these films are meant to be bad, otherwise they wouldn’t be parodies, would they?

The plot revolves around a video-store employee (Steve Howey) who, unfortunately for him, is hunted by 6 famed movie monsters (Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Pinhead, Michael Myers, Leatherface) on Halloween. It can be expected that the content of this film, in reference to gags, will most presumably be lackluster at best. So if you really want to spend your well earned money on seeing this, you must either be a fan of parodies, or you have never seen any of the 6 classic horror films in which the monsters play a part (collectively grossing over $1billion worldwide). The only possible good thing about this film is the re-emergence of ‘Kenan and Kel’ star Kenan Thompson, who hasn’t been seen since ‘Snakes On A Plane‘, but he often made me laugh, so it’s all good.

Once in a blue moon, you find something extraordinary lurking on youtube. Something which is as exciting and as hidden as a state secret, and this is one of those moments, a trailer for the  upcoming Green Lantern movie has been discovered, however it’s fan made. I have to say though, it’s one of the best fan made trailers I’ve ever seen, with shots from over 29 different movies, all rendered together with editing to look extremely convincing. Check it out.

That’s right, geeks rejoice! Comedy legend Ryan Reynolds has taken a turn to the comic adap side, and he really means it, having upcoming roles as ‘Green Lantern‘ (right), ‘Deadpool‘ (which, let’s be honest, we all love) and even playing the part of a washed up writer’s comic book superhero imaginary friend in ‘Paper Man‘. With all of this on his agenda, can anyone really complain about the talented actor harnessing the power of his inner geek, Heck no!

Now let’s be honest, Mr. Reynolds doesn’t look half bad in that spandex as one Hal Jordan, but it isn’t his fashion sense which fans will be tuning in for. Green Lantern, slated for a June 17th, 2011 release will supposedly contains other major characters from the DC universe, such as Sinestro, Carol Ferris, Kilowog and Martin Jordan (Hal’s father). There have also been rumours of a possible cameo from… No, not the Flash (which fans are still hopeful of), but everyone’s favourite Man of Steel alter ago, Clark Kent.

Alternatively, fans of Reynolds other well known comic book character, Deadpool will be glad to know that only after a mere four days of Wolverine premièring in cinemas that Deadpool’s own movie was greenlit. Not only that folks, he will also maintain his traditional costume and ability to ‘break the fourth wall‘ – e.g Being able to communicate with the audience through film, expected to be released around mid 2011 also. Whether he play an intergalactic law enforcer, or a teleporting, regenerating anti-hero, Ryan Reynolds is on my ‘to watch‘ list in the future.

Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman

Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman are set to reunite with director Peter Berg for the sequel to Columbia Pictures’ “Hancock.”

Berg revealed the news at the Toronto Film Festival where he said, “Everybody’s going to come back for a sequel.” Yes, but the studio replied that there are no official deals made with the talent yet.

But you know, Smith, Theron, and Bateman will return.

As we told you last month, “The Shield” writers, Adam Ferro and Glen Mazzara, are working on the script.

No official plot has been announced but according to Variety, “Berg has said Smith and Theron will once again play immortal gods, who lose their powers when in each other’s presence. The two must pair up to deal with a third entity. The actioner is expected to explore the 3,000-year-old world they’re from, which was only hinted at in the first film.”

They’re going to expand the mythology introduced in the first movie.

Bateman will return as the PR exec who helped clean up the image of Smith’s drunk, depressed superhero.

There’s no official release date yet so stay tuned.

The fourth “Spider-Man” film is yet to kick off its production, but Sony Pictures Entertainment has moved on with “Spider-Man 5″ and “Spider-Man 6″ by hiring screenwriter James Vanderbilt. According to Variety, the studio “has quietly engaged” the writer for the original “Spider-Man 4″ screenplay to start work on the next two films for the web-slinging superhero.

Words are, Vanderbilt is being brought back because the executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios like his ideas. The scribe for “Zodiac” is expected to pen an interconnected storyline that will extend from the fifth movie into the sixth with a possibility of back-to-back shooting, like what had been planned for the fourth and fifth films before the idea was scrapped.

The writer of the upcoming “The Losers” was originally hired by Sony to write the screenplay for the fourth film. However, when the first three “Spider-Man” director Sam Raimi came into the fourth project and allegedly didn’t embrace all of Vanderbilt’s ideas, “Rabbit Hole” playwright David Lindsay-Abaire was brought in to re-write Vanderbilt’s script.

It is still unclear whether Raimi and lead actor Tobey Maguire will be involved in the fifth and sixth films once again. There is speculation that if the key people of the “Spider-Man” franchise do not return, Vanderbilt’s script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot.

As for “Spider-Man 4″, it is being prepped to begin production early 2010. While this fourth installment of the series has secured Raimi and Maguire, the questions circulating the potential villains are yet to meet a satisfying answer. Lindsay-Abaire’s script is being re-written by Gary Ross. Produced by Avi Arad, Grant Curtis and Laura Ziskin, the superhero movie will be opened in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2011.

I hate to fall into some hype trap, but I’m really looking forward to this one. It looks like it’ll be the Lock, Stock of superhero film. Hit-Girl’s reloading scene is especially sweet. Surely the coolest since Heat.

My only fear is Nicolas Cage finding some way to fuck it up.

After almost four weeks without a single visit to a cinema I finally went to see a new film. It was The Hangover, which was freaking hilarious! I mean, I literally laughed out loud from the very beginning until the very end.

I like comedies of almost every kind. The only kind I’m not drawn to at all, are the so-called modern spoof movies that reference every single movie made in the last twelve months (Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, Scary Movie). I like the old spoof movies, such as Airplane! and Hot Shots, but the joke has grown old after the umpteenth version.

I like romantic comedies, buddy comedies, clever comedies, British comedies, tragic comedies and now the new kind of comedy perfected by Judd Apatow and friends. The Hangover falls in the same category as Knocked Up and Superbad. These comedies rely on the shocks and stupid situations but also on clever dialogue and good actors. And boy is there a lot of shocks in The Hangover. It’s just as I said to my friend when we were exiting the movie theatre after seeing the film, wiping away tears of laughter, that modern audiences need the shocks. They have seen it all by now, and need something new. Of course it can be overdone – I wasn’t a big fan of that one particular scene in Zack and Miri make a Porno, but it was there for the same reason. To get a reaction out of a jaded audience. This is exactly what Sacha Baron Cohen does with his films, Borat and now Brüno. It’s all about breaking the taboos and shocking the audience into startled laughter.

But yea, The Hangover is funny. The funniest thing in it is undoubtedly Zach Galifianakis’ oddball Alan. Though Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms (Andy from The Office) are very funny as well in their more straight guy roles, it’s Galifianakis who owns the movie. He plays the role straight despite the character being a total weirdo and somehow manages to make him sympathetic. How, I still cannot say.

The Hangover isn’t for everyone. It’s a story of four guys who go to Vegas to have as much fun as possible and all sorts of crazy things ensue. Still, the whole audience seemed to enjoy it last Saturday. Except for maybe the two middle aged couples who seemed like they were in the wrong movie theatre.

Så var det då dags att få superhjältefilmgenren parodierad och här bygger man historien kring Spiderman, men lånar även scener från Batman, Fantastic Four och X-men. Den Peter Parker-liknande killen blir här biten av en genmanipulerad trollslända och sedan rullar det på med galna vetenskapsmän, romantik, väggklättring osv.

Som så ofta annars vad gäller sådana här filmer har man sett de flesta och bästa skämten redan i trailern och det blir lite corny i längden. Historien är nästan rakt av tagen från Spiderman och kryddad med vissa roliga och vissa bara fåniga skämt. Är man på rätt humör så kan man dock skratta igenkännande åt mycket utav det, men som alltid annars i sådana här filmer blir ärkeskurken och spänningselementet helt neutraliserat, vilket gör att själva motorn i intrigen kollapsar och det bli aningen segt. Når inte alls samma nivå som andra spoof-filmer som exempelvis Titta vi flyger eller Nakna pistolen.

Como comprobaréis, la semana del 4 al 10 de mayo presenta pocas novedades en DVD que no por ello son menos interesantes.

De entre todos los LARGOMETRAJES, quisiéramos destacar “Estómago” (Espiga de Oro en el pasado Festival de Valladolid), “My Blueberry Nights” de Wong Kar-Wai o “La ola”, que sitúa en Alemania una historia real acaecida en los años sesenta en California.

En cuanto a los DOCUMENTALES se edita uno de lo más ecológico (narrado y producido por Leonardo DiCaprio) “La hora 11” y otro, “El abogado del terror” que intenta acercarnos la figura del controvertido letrado Jacques Vergès.

La oferta se cierra con una película española de ANIMACIÓN que logró un Goya, “El lince perdido”.

Tras pasar por varios centros de recogida de animales, su llegada al Acebuche (Parque Natural de Doñana), le deparará grandes sorpresas. Se están produciendo extrañas desapariciones de animales en la zona. Un temible cazador acecha. Un excéntrico millonario tiene un plan secreto. Y Félix y sus compañeros tendrán que unirse para sobrevivir y poner fin al misterio.

As a superhero film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is more Iron Man than The Dark Knight stylistically and in tone, and nowhere near as good as those films, but it’s still pretty entertaining on its own terms. Directed by Gavin Hood, and part of a projected X-Men Origins franchise, it tells the story of how Logan (Hugh Jackman) became Wolverine, the indestructible man with retractable metal claws in his hands. Though the movie tends to lurch forward instead of flowing from scene to scene, it’s got a number of terrific action sequences going for it and kicks off with an excellent opener, and it’s got some memorable special effects (with some serious exceptions towards the end) and some truly dazzling visuals, the latter of which makes it worth seeing on a big screen. It is in no way groundbreaking for its genre, but then it doesn’t seem like it was designed to be, either. Its sole ambition seems to be a summer popcorn movie, and it succeeds in being entertaining, thrilling and frequently quite funny. The jerky pace does kill off some of its momentum, and it’s quite violent (especially disturbing scene: graphic depiction of a head shot, minus the splatter but including the impact), making it highly unsuitable for very young audiences, despite the ubiquitous presence of Wolverine toys at stores currently. It does have a pretty decent moral lesson, however: Revenge sucks. All in all, a pretty satisfying first salvo in the summer movie wars, 2009.
