I’ve always been a mild REM fan and enjoyed watching Michael Stipe’s journey into hipsterdom. From the early days of Vexed Generation ninja hoodies to the Courtney Love-inspired songs, Stipe has always made interesting choices. It’s not easy being a quirky guy living in the limelight. For the past 10 years, he has become somewhat of an art world darling. He has made enough mainstream hits to be one of the most beloved frontmen in music history but has also stayed under the celebrity radar enough to still respected by the fringe community. He’s one of few artists who can play stadiums but still hang with the cool kids.

And when you have an in with the art scene, the next logical step is the fashion world.

Not only did he star in Juergen Teller’s Marc Jacobs campaign, Stipe makes his rounds during Fashion Week each year.

In 2008, Stipe exhibited a few bronze sculptures in New York and it seems his metal work isn’t just for the galleries. In collaboration with Belgian label Maison Martin Margiela, Stipe has created a limited edition accessory to be sold at select stores. His design features a mini cassette with the unraveled tape as a chain. Only 199 pieces are available so all you Michael Stipe fans better move quick.

Don’t know about you but I’m not rushing out to Nordstrom’s to pick this up any time soon. I don’t even know what I think of it. I guess I don’t feel much. Blah.

What’s going on Michael Stipe? I think you can do better than this.

Idol is being self congratulatory again. I know it’s a ratings powerhouse, but this is ridiculous. It’s not like Simon Fuller has discovered the cure for cancer.

Kris was leading on Dial Idol this morning, but by negligible numbers. Kris also barely won the TV Guide poll. I’m just passing this on for info sake.

Kris and Adam’s mics don’t work. Ha!

The top thirteen launch into a haphazard version of Pink’s ” So What”. The thirteen sound atrocious together. They always have. ” And you’re a tool” made the cut. Snickers. Awful off key notes left and right. Last year’s top twelve were truly much better as a collective.

David!!!!! ” Permanent”!!!! Whoot! And he sounds great. God, I’ve missed him on this show. And everyone buy the song.

Idol Awards- a moment of levity. Some awful performances. Everyone laugh at the deluded.But we get NickNorman again. God, I love the guy.

Lil sings with Queen Latifah, and The Queen sings circles around the Lil one.

Jason Mraz!!! With Alexis and Anoop. I love this song. I love Mraz. I love Alexis and Anoop. I love this. Best of the current Idol performances so far.

We get a Kris tape piece. We found him in Kentucky, remember? He’s such a sweet guy. And he sings ” Kiss A Girl” with Keith Urban. He sounds good on the song. I’m not a big fan of this Keith song, but whatever, they sound great.

The girls are now singing Fergie’s ” Glamorous”. Are you kidding? Fergie can’t sing either. Jasmine is heinous. There is no melody to this song. Fergie comes out and “sings” “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. Ugh. Now the Black Eyed Peas come out to join there wayward girl and launch into whatever this song is ( I’ve been immersed in Green Day’s new album- it’s a classic. I’ve been avoiding BEP at all costs). Why the sudden cut to the Idol sign and no sound?

More Idol awards. Best Attitude. And Bikini Girl is on the list. The only moment all season I liked Kara. And then Kara joins Bikini Girl on stage and sings circles around the girl. ( Kara can sing. Not spectacularly, but she can.)

Ally!!!!! Singing “Time After Time” with Cyndi Lauper. Awesome. Allison loses the lyric a bit. They both sound good in their quirky way. The chorus is gorgeous. I love you, Ally Cat.

Danny is singing “Hello”? SACRELIGE!!!!!!!

But Lionel Richie… well, he’s cool in a cheesy ass way. Too bad he’s singing with DWP. I don’t like this song at all though. Just like DWP. Now some ” All Night Long”. DWP sucks donkey balls.

Now we get Adam’s tape piece in San Fransisco. He kept his promise, indeed. Adam is singing with …, wait, what the fuck is he wearing? He launches with ” Beth”?  KISS!!!!!!!!!!!! KIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! ” Detroit Rock City” is my fave KISS song, and then we get ” Rock And Roll All Nite” and I love Adam right now. Awesomeness.

Still prefer Cyndi and Ally. Just saying.

Carlos Santana is awesome.  Some ” Black Magic Woman”. Loving it. Some Matt Giraud who sounds pretty good with the man. Little off in the lower register. Now some ” smooth”. Love this song. It’s ten years old, you know. Adam joins in. Jorge… this must be the guy song. Kris really sounded good on his line. DWP sucks still.  Nope, the girls join in.  The thirteen together still sound shitty.

Ford video. Whatever.

David gives Adam and Kris cars. I love that. All three seem so nice.

Steve Martin, who is my comedy hero. He’s joining Sarver and Megan. WTF? This is the weirdest thing ever on Idol. Megan still is bizarre. Total surrealist moment.

Gwen has informed me we are watching SYTYCD. Oh boy.

Um… The guys are singing ” If Ya Think I’m Sexy”. Why?  I’m not even a Rod Stewart fan and I feel sorry for the dude. Rod does come out next, and he begins  “Maggie May”, the only Rod Stewart song I believe is perfect. Rod’s voice hasn’t been the same since his surgery. The grit’s there, but the power he had is gone. Sad, really. The song is still awesome, though.

Another Idol award. Oh, shit. Shriekianna. SHIT! I was hoping to avoid the drama queen. Shit. This is bad comedy but I can’t help laughing at the absurdity.

So we are now twenty minutes out of the scheduled end time of Idol. I’m expecting an Adam-Kris moment.

And we get “We Are The Champions”. Queen on Idol. Awesome. Adam is in his zone on this song. Gwen just saw Brian Mays and screamed. Awesome vocals by our top two. I am loving this more than I really should. The swaybots are annoying, but that’s not new. Fucking awesome.

Idol finale returns with Kris and Adam. RyRy goes to Simon and tells Simon to give advice. Simon is not snarky at all. A rare moment. The dude comes out with the results. Almost 100 million votes cast. Dim the lights, here we go. And the winner is… KRIS ALLEN!!!!!!!!

The dark horse actually won the thing? Holy shit!

Off the radar for most of the series, Kris Allen just won American Idol.

He looks stunned and flabbergasted. He can barely form a sentence. Adam looks genuinely happy for Kris.

Wow.

Too bad Kris has to sing that bullshit song again. Poor guy. I forgive the pitchiness and everything right now.

It was an interesting season of Idol, too be sure. And I’ll be back in January to do it all again. Because Idol and I will never break up despite the hell it puts me through.

First, Jake and I played with the idea of 80’s alt music videos, and after perusing those, Jake has decided to get a mohawk (a la Clash).  When we switched our theme to REM,  Jake was inspired to accessorize his new look with a Stipe Stripe.  He’s taking suggestions on the color, width, and location.

It seems like a lot of musicians, at one time or another, end up writing a song that’s trying to lift people up and motivate them.  Michael Stipe has been doing that lately, with songs like “Imitation of Life”, “All The Way To Reno”, and “Supernatural Superserious.”  So, really, it’s no surprise to see Jeff Tweedy doing something similar on “What Light.” 

It’s a really loose song with a wishy-washy acoustic guitar rhythm and nice layers of slide guitar and piano, creating a pleasant (dare I say…) Eagles-like atmosphere.  I think the majority of critics who made that comparison when Sky Blue Sky came out were wrong, and they probably just listened to this song.  It’s a very warm folk sound, with a glowing organ and a sing-along chorus that help to conjure up 1960s/70s American folk-rock. 

The song is uplifting and encouraging, telling people they should sing what they feel and express themselves freely.  “If you’re trying to paint a picture/But you’re not sure which colors belong/Just paint what you see/Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong”: is a really nice line that says whatever you feel is OK, and you should express it however you see fit.  Just because you handle certain feelings differently than other people doesn’t make you any better or worse than they are, it’s just how people are.

Then there’s that chorus…  It’s almost unbearably catchy and familiar from the first time you hear it.  A big part of that is how simple it is.  But don’t confuse simple songwriting with poor songwriting.  It’s like minimalistic art: there are no frills.  What needs to be said is said clearly.  Nothing more, nothing less.

The second verse continues with the inspiring lyrics.  “If you think you might need somebody/To pick you up when you drag/Don’t lose sight of yourself/Don’t let anyone change your bag”: this is about how, when you can’t do something on your own, it’s OK to ask for help.  But you shouldn’t rely on others, because you (as an individual) should be a priority.  When you start letting other people live your life for you, it’s your fault.  That’s why you need to keep being yourself.  But what about when people start taking things that had been exclusively yours?  This is my favorite part of the song:

“And if the whole world is singing your songs/And all of your paintings have been hung/Just remember: what was yours is everyone’s from now on/That’s not wrong or right/But you can struggle with it all you’d like/You’ll only get uptight”

You can see this as people taking what was once yours, or it can be viewed as sharing.  There isn’t anything wrong with people embracing you and what you’ve done, but some people may feel uncomfortable with it.  We are reassured than any feelings we may have towards this are “not wrong or right”, but if we worry too much, that’s no good. 

“What Light” is an unusually positive song for Wilco, which is a refreshing change.  While a lot fans are attracted to Wilco because of their ability to write about things that are unpleasant, their versatility is something that has never ceased to amaze their audience.

Recently, (and I mean recently on the R.E.M. timeline, as opposed to the “new music” timeline) R.E.M. recorded a video for their single “Supernatural, Superserious” with director Vincent Moon.  On 12 February, 2008, they launched the Supernatural, Superserious website, where anyone can download 11 takes of the video with footage from around New York City and a youtube group specifically for uploading your own version of the video.  There is even additional material of the band (shot by Vincent Moon) available on the ninety nights archive for use in the great video mashup, or for use in whatever else people use it for.

The official site for the video is interesting for another reason, you can play all 12 boxes (if your computer is up to the task) or any number at a time simultaneously.  If you can get a load of boxes going, it creates an cool montage on the screen.

After reading some of the comments on youtube and checking out the site itself, it seems to me that the project has been generally well recieved, and that people enjoy being able to create their own versions.  I’m going to try my own version, I think, when I get the chance, I’ll let you know how it goes!

Hoje é dia de música.

Não sei sei vocês gostam, mas eu sempre gostei de R.E.M., e achei os últimos discos deles meio fracos, sem aquela vitalidade que sempre foi características, mesmo em músicas mais calmas.

Eis que ouvi o último álbum deles e achei que se redimiram pelo tempo que eles lançaram música menos empolgantes. afinal, depois de ouvir a vitalidade de it´s the end of the world as we know it, entre outras, fica difícil se contentar com menos.

Para mim outro que mostrou que ainda tem muita bala na agulha foi o Eddie Vedder. Mas ao invés de um disco comercial, ele fez a trilha sonora de um filme muito emocionante, Into the wild, Na Natureza Selvagem. Vale ser assistido. O clipe, a trilha sonora e o filme.

the new death cab cd came out… i am in heaven. i listened to at work from my new work husband (apparently upon my return to work i was upgraded from work friend to work wife… though i am not sure how i feel about the matrimonial ceremony in general, for fake fun im totally down with it).

it was so reliably death cab. i like it when there are things you can rely on in life, and death cab always sounds like themselves!

what do you think of the new death cab cd? or, all of the other stellar stuff coming out in time for the summer? there is the new coldplay (violet hill!! so great its even won over the edge 102.1 morning show!), AND new REM (supernatural superserious- i just bought tickets to the show at the amphitheatre).

Considering I left home for college in 1988, perhaps I was too young to appreciate R.E.M.’s really hip days, such as when “Fables of the Reconstruction” came out in 1985.

Primul e R.E.M. – Accelerate, care-o sa fie scos in 31 martie in Europa. Se zvoneste a fi un album mult mai dinamic decat restul albumelor, Michael Stipe declarand ca e o schimbare mare de stil. Durata lui e putin peste o jumatate de ora si la prima vedere pare poate prea accelerat.

Primul single – Supernatural Superserious- a fost scos deja pe piata in 11 februarie si a avut parte si de un videoclip.

Ya podemos disfrutar del primer single del nuevo trabajo de estudio de R.E.M. Supernatural Superserious es la avanzadilla de Accelerate, disco que no verá la luz hasta finales del mes  de marzo y comienzos de abril. De esta manera los estadounidenses se suman a la moda de lanzar el single antes que el disco, en este caso el 11 de febrero, y nosotros sólo podemos agradecérselo. Y vaya que sus seguidores han sabido apreciarlo, porque el tema ha sido el primero desde Imitation of Life de 2001 en entrar directamente en más de dos  ránquines, entre ellos el Billboard Modern Rock Tracks (puesto 36). Para terminar hay que mencionar que el videoclip ha sido grabado por Vincent Moon, y en él se pueden observar varias localizaciones en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Come fare per ascoltare in anteprima e gratuitamente il nuovo disco dei R.E.M.?

Dal 24 Marzo, sarà infatti possibile ascoltare Accelerate, semplicemente registrandosi nel sito senza nessun costo. Inoltre, per chi è già in possesso di un account su Facebook, basterà aggiungere l’applicazione di iLike tra le proprie (se non è ancora presente) per poter sfruttare questa occasione; stessa cosa per gli utenti di iTunes che possono sfruttare il plug-in ad hoc.

Accelerate è stato anticipato dall’uscita del primo singolo, Supernatural Superserious, già disponibile per l’ascolto sul myspace del gruppo. Ma non è tutto. Per il video del brano, del quale è già in circolazione la versione originale diretta da Vincent Moon, la band a messo a disposizione online alcuni filmati in alta definizione dando la possibilità di creare un proprio montaggio da uploadare su YouTube, nel canale dedicato.

A chi non bastasse, c’è anche la possibilità di dare un’occhiata al materiale video di NinetyNights, sito che dal primo gennaio, raccoglie quotidianamente video da 30-60 secondi girati e prodotti sempre da Vincent Moon. Tutti gli spezzoni, che possono essere usati anche per il remix di Supernatural Superserious, possono essere scaricati in hd solamente il giorno della messa online, mentre tutti gli altri sono visualizzabili, in bassa risoluzione, direttamente nell’archivio del sito.

Il nuovo tour, che stasera parte da Austin (Texas), porterà i R.E.M. in Italia nel mese di Luglio con ben cinque date:
