Men allt i sinom tid förstås.

Esta eleição está sendo histórica em muitos termos diferentes, e all bets are off at this point.

This evening I did something I have never done before. In fact, until a few weeks ago, I never even

This evening I did something I have never done before. In fact, until a few weeks ago, I never even thought about doing it because I was always working. I wasn’t even sure HOW to do it. So I went online and found out WHERE I could do it.

Tonight I headed down to my local Republican precinct and attended the party of my political registration’s caucus. I had literally no idea what to expect. The online information stated that the caucus was to be held at my local elementary school. In my mind I envisioned a bunch of other local registered republicans sitting on grandstands and debating the merits of this and that and the other candidates, and then, at the conclusion, we’d all rasie our hand vote for our candidate of choice.

That’s not EXACTLY what happened, but pretty close! At least in part. Each precinct gathered in assigned classrooms. I sighed to myself and hoped that this misspelled sign was taken down off the door to the 4th grade classroom we met in before the kids showed up for school in the morning!

Our classroom was full. We had 25 registered Republicans show up. From what I hear from others who had done this before, this was quite a turnout. Our meeting started with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance. There were a number of items of business. I volunteered to be a teller, or a vote counter.

The actual discussing the candidates part of the meeting was quite tame. Speakers were limited to two minutes and could speak in support of or against the candidates. We had ten people speak. Most spoke strongly in favor of Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee. A few spoke gently against McCain and Romney. And then we took a written straw vote (our actual primary takes place in August). The votes were collected in a little basket and I and the other two tellers took them outside for the count. My precincts finals:

The results were called in on speaker phone with all of us as witnesses.

More items of business followed. I was one of the three chosen to be county delegates for our county meeting in March. I am excited to be part of the actual political process instead of just showing up and voting on election day.

We started at 7:00 and were done by 8:30. I will be seeing Dale and Betty again as they are the other county delegates. So far the whole process has been very hands on.

I have always said that if you don’t vote, you lose your right to complain about politicians and the state of things. I guess that I am insuring my right to complain loudly!

When I got home I decided to watch FOX News’ coverage of Super Tuesday and was both shocked and delighted to see that Mike Huckabee is having a great night! If Romney wins, I guess I can close my eyes and plug my nose and pull the lever for him…and then go home and take a shower. If McCain wins I’m afraid in order to get a less liberal candidate that I’ll have to vote for whoever the democratic candidate is.

So it’s come to this: I’m way more psyched about the primary election results tonight than the Giants “upsetting” the Patriots or that the Writer’s Strike is STILL going on, prompting Sid Ganis, the president of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to urge Oscar nominees to pass the picket line and attend the damn awards show. I have even gotten behind in keeping up on Fashion Week in New York, because, hell, this whole thing is damned exciting.

And thank god I’m paying attention to this election. It’s exciting. I mean, I honestly don’t know anyone that’s not obsessed with this election. They are even comparing Hil and Obamarama to computers, like the New York Times did so well yesterday.

My mom called me today during class and said, “Hi Andrew, you’re dad and I just cast our first two votes where we actually felt like we were voting for someone we wanted rather than because they were the lesser of two evils.” And my parents have weathered many elections. This is big. HUGE, even.

And we all know it. Go to any website and I dare you to not see one mention of today. The washingtonpost.com is doing a live election broadcast on their site, starting at 6 p.m. Slate.com and otehrs have a comprehensive Super Tuesday Survival Guide with some input from political pundit heavy-hitters like Jeff Greenfield. USA Today has an awesome interactive poll guide, where you can track each of the candidates in every state.

And if that’s not enough (sorry, I gave no love to Mac Attack and Romney… whatever his nickname is), Hil went on Letterman last night and declared (as if pulling for that female vote a LITTLE bit more…) that when she and Bill are in the White House, we’ll all know “who wears the pantsuits.”

So, finish your slapping away at that key board, editing those documents, punching in numbers and get out to vote today. And when you get home, don’t forget to turn on any ABC’s FIVE HOURS OF COVERAGE (with Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson, personal faves, actually) or Wolf Blitzer on CNN (poor Soledad plays third fiddle and so does Anderson) or Katie Couric’s cute little CBS special at 9 p.m. (who even knew she did stuff still?) Happy watching!

Were I not a victim of taxation without representation, I would be voting in the Massachusetts primary today, and I would be voting for Barack Obama to be the Democrats’ presidential candidate. My endorsement won’t carry any weight, but I would draw attention to the endorsement by Larry Lessig and the very lucid presentation he recently posted.

One of the important skills for any human being, and I do consider most politicians to be human beings, is that of interacting well with those who disagree. I am impressed by the way Obama reacted to chanting protesters. He was civil to them and, after they had been ejected, he reminded the crowd of the important of free speech, and that protests like the one against his position are ““part of the American tradition.”

Yes, I do categorize my few political posts under Business deliberately.

Posdata: Aguante Obama!

Today is a very hot day for the US Elections race: democrats and republicans of a lot of States have to vote in order to elect their presidential candidate. Probably, these results will not be decisive for any of the main candidates; but if you have a good night today, be sure that you are at the pole position for the rest of the race.

While we, political animals, wait for the beginning of the party, I invite you to read an interesting article about political, individual and feminism: Why I’m not necessarily for Hillary, written for Alice Kessler-Harris and published at the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I am not reassured by learning that John Edwards is the son of a mill worker, that Barack Obama is black, or that Clinton is a woman. Each of those identities reflects something about which I care deeply. But I can’t vote for any of them because of who they are. Supporting Hillary because she is a woman fosters a debate about whether to place race or sex or religion at the top of our list of priorities. If I support Hillary (or any candidate) because I am drawn to her identity, I am simply encouraging others to support their candidates for the same reason. And identity is no guarantee that a particular individual will speak for feminist values and issues.“

November die US Praesidentschaftswahlen 2008 stattfinden.

Januar 2009 an.

New England Patriots vs New York Giants soweit ich weiss. In Phoenix, Arizona.

CNN: Huckabee Big Winner of Reagan Library Debate
Huckabee electrifies supporters after sharp debate performance
Bennett: Huckabee performed well

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — CNN political analyst Bill Schneider said it best: “Tonight’s big winner: Huckabee.” Live Bloggers from ABC News also lauded the performance of Gov. Huckabee. More importantly, Huckabee energized his critical grassroots supporters with probably his best debate performance since the Nov. 28 CNN/YouTube debate. The debate provides a critical boost in advance of Super Tuesday.

Huckabee currently leads the following Super Tuesday states in the most recent polling data*: Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee and Oklahoma and Alabama (tied).

FROM THE PUNDITS
Conservative Bill Bennett on CNN: “I think Huckabee performed well.”

Writes CNN’s Schneider: Huckabee, I think, stood out in this debate as the one who made sense, talked as ordinary people do, and rose above politics. … He connected. And that’s a problem for Romney, who would like to become the alternative to John McCain among conservatives who oppose the Arizona senator. But he has very tough competition from Huckabee, who’s forcing people to re-think his run at a time when he was supposed to be out of the game.

When the candidates were asked why the late President Reagan would endorse them, Huckabee’s answer impressed ABC’s Karen Travers. She wrote on the ABC Live Blog, “Huck crushes the Reagan question. Not using it as a chance to squabble with a rival — totally stays above that.”

Rick Klein from ABC’s The Note writes: Huckabee sounds like a candidate for president — not vice president — for tonight at least. He hasn’t played the McCain protector I assumed he would, or would have to. Mostly, probably, because of the docile tone, but for people tuning in late — hey, this Huckabee guy can be really good.

FROM THE GRASSROOTS
Some interesting comments from the official Huckabee website, mikehuckabee.com:

A.S. writes, “Until today I had always considered you a solid candidate, but not necessarily one I would vote for. You refusing to be treated as a 3rd class candidate while also respecting the other candidates impressed me. I came to this site for more information as I rethink who I’m going to support on the 5th. I vote for character and I think you showed a lot of that tonight. Well done!”

M.S writes, “I was yelling at the TV at how much time was given to McCain and Romney to act like children! The blessing was that they both hurt themselves tonight. I could see the expressions on Nancy Reagan and Gov. Schwarzenegger’s faces, and it was embarrassing. McCain and Romney should both be ashamed of their personal bickering instead of addressing issues. It really showed their colors, and also Mike’s true character and grace.”

Ranger writes, “Gov. Mike Huckabee, you did great tonight! You stood out as the truly authentic conservative Republican, in the mold of Ronald Reagan. I expect another huckaboom forthcoming from your performance tonight.”

And from the Troops at HucksArmy.com:
Thall writes, “His answer to the last question about Reagan was wonderful. I grew up watching Reagan and had the honor to vote for him in the ‘84 election. Mike brought back memories of Reagan’s speeches and how he lifted the spirits of the nation. What an image for Mike to leave with the audience. The McRomneys looked like scabbling school children.”

ColoradoMom4Huckabee writes, “WOW WOW WOW!! I couldn’t have asked for Mike to end on a stronger note!! He hit several home runs tonight, and his last words were a great way to seal the image of him as a statesman, who sees beyond the issues, to the heart of America…like Reagan!”

The CNN debate this evening is critical for the Huckabee campaign. The audience has the potential to be the largest of any debate yet. With Super Tuesday looming, people from all across the country will be tuning in to help them make a final decision about who to vote for.

Huckabee comes into this debate in much the same way he came into the first debates, with his candidacy dismissed. The media has written off his campaign and the conservative talking heads have turned their firepower against McCain because they no longer perceive Huckabee to be a threat. Huckabee has the potential to come out of this debate looking very good because expectation are so low.

The debate this evening could possibly be the largest audience that Huckabee has ever reached at any one time. There will be people watching this debate who have never heard any more from Huckabee than the soundbites in the media. A strong debate performance tonight (if CNN gives him enough air time) will allow him to get the word out about his radical tax reform plan (Fair Tax), strong anti-illegal immigration stance, and innovative economic ideas.

Huckabee supporters all across the country are holding their breath as each hour brings us closer to the debate, and what could be one of the defining moments of the Huckabee candidacy.

HUCKSARMY.COM READY FOR HOME COURT SUPER TUESDAY ADVANTAGE
Grassroots organization plan massive voter contact campaign

JOPLIN, Mo. — With the 2008 Florida primary now in the history books, the troops at HucksArmy.com plan on launching their largest grassroots voter turnout effort so far this campaign in anticipation of Super Tuesday next week. While Gov. Mike Huckabee is already leading in many Super Tuesday states, HucksArmy.com will be working around the clock to help Team Huckabee win decisive victories.

Gov. Huckabee is either tied or ahead in the following Super Tuesday states: Alabama (48 delegates), Arkansas (34), Georgia (72), Missouri (58), Montana (25) Tennessee (55), and Oklahoma (41). States with no polling data that Huckabee should do well in include Alaska, North Dakota and West Virginia. Huckabee also leads in Texas (140) which holds its primary on March 4.*

“We intend to reach voters directly with phone calls, e-mails, meet ups and door-to-door visits before Super Tuesday, building a coalition of pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-Second Amendment, pro-American business, and pro-military voters to give Huckabee clear victories, from Alaska to Georgia,” said HucksArmy.com National Grassroots Campaign Manager David Schmidt.

“The voters in many of these Southern states have known Huckabee for years and they know his conservative record,” said Lucas Roebuck, HucksArmy.com public affairs officer. “The half-truth negative campaigning against Huckabee will have little effect here.”

HUCKABEE EARNS ARKANSAS RTL ENDORSEMENT
Mike Huckabee this week also earned the Arkansas Right to Life endorsement. Arkansas RTL joins Tennessee, Arizona, Alaska, Missouri, Georgia, Montana and Missouri RTL organizations in endorsing Huckabee.

Additionally the National Right to Life made this statement:
“National Right to Life is grateful for the strong pro-life record established by Mike Huckabee as governor of Arkansas, and recognizes that Governor Huckabee has taken the strongest pro-life position on all of the life issues of any of the remaining candidates for president.”

“These are states where the value voters are looking for leaders to advance the defense of the sanctity of life,” said Lucas Roebuck, HucksArmy.com public affairs officer. “Mike Huckabee has the best record of defending life of any candidate running for president, hands down. There’s no contest.”

It’s probably even less likely than a brokered convention, but should the Democratic race come

It’s probably even less likely than a brokered convention, but should the Democratic race come down to the final two primaries on June 3, could Indians be the key to the nomination? Afterall, Native Americans are more than 6% of the population in Montana and 8.5% in South Dakota. Ketaki Gokhale explores how the race is playing in Indian Country, particularly on Tsunami Tuesday:

In states like Alaska, where 16 percent of the population is Native Alaskan, New Mexico, where 10.2 percent of the population is Native, and Oklahoma, where is 8.1 percent of the population is Native, the way Indian Country votes, if it votes as a bloc, could influence the Democratic Party pick for a presidential nominee.

Like in other communities, Obama is stirring enthusiasm, but hasn’t closed the deal. In last night’s South Carolina victory sppech, Obama was careful to include the “black and white, Latino and Asian” components of his coalition. It might behoove Obama to add Native Americans to that list.

Barack Obama is big in Indian Country, even though he’s done everything wrong. He hasn’t attended the annual National Congress of American Indians meet, or rolled out a comprehensive Native American agenda, or even addressed the rumors of his own Native heritage—but he has still, somehow, managed to capture the imagination of Indian Country, say Native American commentators and community activists.

On the other hand,

Sundust Martinez, of the San Jose, Calif.-based Native Voice TV, says that Obama needs to meet with more groups and come up with a clear Indian Country agenda. “There’s just nothing out there,” he says. “[Obama] hasn’t really taken a stance on a lot of issues.”…A recent column in Indian Country Today, however, argued that Obama is reaching out to Native Americans, and that he is the only candidate to have a page on his website dedicated to his Native American supporters. The site, First Americans for Obama, includes a post on a bill Obama cosponsored last year that aims to improve the Indian Health Service, a federal program that operates medical clinics and hospitals on Indian reservations.

Hillary, meanwhile, was a visible presence at last year’s National Congress of Indian meeting, and she has support from many tribal leaders– and Bubba good will– in her favor.

Obama campaign co-chair Tom Daschle surely recalls the Pine Ridge’s role in Tim Johnson’s Senate squeeker in 2002:

Denny McAuliffe, a University of Montana journalism professor and the director of Reznet, an online journalism program for Native American college students,…. recalls another close contest—the 2002 congressional face-off between the Democratic incumbent Rep. Tim Johnson and John Thune, in which Johnson won by 524 votes, because of late returns from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Over 90 percent of the votes cast there were for the Democrat.
