Just finished a week of straight boat surfing on Slingshot’s latest creation, “The Arcane” surf board. I’m usually not one for boat surfing, but the Arcane has changed that. It’s not a boat-surf board, it’s a surf board for the boat. THe thing rips. Tony Logosz, our chief product designer at Slingshot even made the trek down to surf it with us as we shot photo’s / video with my two favorite media masters Bryan Soderlind and Josh McWilliams. We also had the chance to take it to Cocoa beach for some real surf and watched Mark Pachiatti get barreled on the 5′0″ fish shape. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s the only surf board for the boat that’s ever been fully barreled. Here’s a sneak peak of the images shot by “Bear”. Look out for the Arcane in the next issue’s of alliance and wakeboard mag as well as a SICK video on alliancewake.com in the upcoming weeks. I’m off to “get shacked” on the Arcane…wish me luck!

What does it take to be a good leader? When Obama was elected to become the most powerful man in the world, there was a lovely story in the January edition of ‘The Surfer’s Path’ about Richard Nixon (bear with me, it is rather long):

 “From John’s deck one could survey the scene, including the upper story of the hacienda and the special stairs that had been built to allow presidential access to the sand and sea. One afternoon, as I looked on, Dick and Pat (the Mrs.) descended the bluff, crossed over the railroad tracks (via a special set of stairs and plank inlays), and stepped out onto the beach. It was a glorious day and the couple was preceded, at a polite distance, by a pair of secret-service agents. In fact, Dick and Pat kept a polite distance from each other, too. Another pair of secret-service agents followed, at a distance. The four men were dressed in black suits, complete with shiny black shoes, ties, jackets. Pat wore a casual pant-suit kind of thing, but it was the president who really caught my eye. He wore a pair of dark gray slacks – high, with the belt buckle positioned about halfway between his navel and his sternum – and a powder-blue shirt with short sleeves that came closer to his wrists than his elbows. He wore polished dress shoes, and he stepped awkwardly towards the berm, along which he walked as he studied the sloshing surges of the Pacific. The impression I got was of a guy a lot less at home on a beach than Neil Armstrong had been hopping around in a space suit on the moon”

President Obama, on the other hand, grew up in Hawai’i and went to the same high school as surfing great Gerry Lopez. Comfortable in the ocean, Drew Kampion (the man responsible for the passage above) believes that Obama is a good thing for the world, notably: “for sustainability and the environment, for compassion and relationships, for sanity and reason”. On Youtube, we can even watch Obama bodysurf a wave at his home break:

Unfortunately, I could not find any Youtube evidence of the ‘inner surfer’ in Herman Van Rompuy, the new European President. Yet we should not give up on the chap just yet. After a trawl through his personal website, I discovered some of his much discussed Haiku. Here is one entitled ‘Water’:

“Plassen wachten

Op warmte om te verdampen.

Water wordte een wolk.”

 Unless anyone can tell me otherwise, I will go on believing he is writing about the joys of gliding along a four foot peeling wave. I have emailed to ask him, so maybe if there is a flat spell in politics and swell, he will let us know. And before you write and tell me that Hitler liked poetry and also had connections with Japan, let me tell you this: Herman also cites his favourite author as Albert Camus. He’s not the only one.

Arrangeren is blijkbaar ‘booming’ want op de onderwijsdagen werden meerdere workshops en presentaties over arrangeren gehouden. Ik woonde de presentatie bij van Serge de Beer en Chantal Vos die vertelden hoe zij uitgaande van het enorme aanbod van digitaal lesmateriaal antwoord probeerden te geven op vragen als “wat is de meerwaarde van arrangeren? “, “Hoe betrekken we de leerlingen erbij” en “Hoe maken we het praktisch toepasbaar” Het is in de presentatie niet gelukt een antwoord op alle vragen te krijgen. De zaal werd in groepen verdeeld en kreeg een opdracht voorgelegd. De discussies die daarbij ontstonden vulden vervolgens het grootste deel van deze sessie.
Dat is natuurlijk een goed teken want de presentatie en opdracht leiden tot veel vragen: Moet een docent nu wel of niet ontwikkelaar zijn? Is degene die het arrangement samenstelt de docent zelf? Is het voldoende een of twee docent-arrangeurs te hebben die arrangeren zonder vakinhoudelijke kennis te hebben? Wat is nu precies arrangeren? Als dit gebeurt met basismateriaal, waar komt deze dan vandaan?

In de opdracht werkte de ene groep aan een leervraag en ging de andere een procedure bedenken om de leervraag helder te krijgen. In mijn groep stelden we de volgende leervraag vast: de studenten kunnen aan het einde van de module landbouwmachines op verantwoorde wijze reinigen en onderhouden. Zij moeten hierbij rekening houden met (inter-)nationele regels op het gebied van het milieu (“duurzaam reinigen”). De andere groep bevroeg ons om onder andere te weten te komen op welk niveau de module moest plaatsvinden, welke lesmaterialen en werkvormen nodig waren en welke welke (beroeps-)producten gewenst waren. Tijdsgebrek zorgde ervoor dat we het helaas niet konden afronden.
Tenslotte werden een paar arrangementen getoond. Opvallend hierbij was het gebruik van templates zodat de voorbeelden de indruk gaven dat alles volgens een bepaald stramien was opgebouwd. Mede door deze voorbeelden werd het voor mij in ieder geval niet helder wat de meerwaarde was en waar de inbreng van gebruiker was. Misschien iets voor de Onderwijsdagen 2010 als verdiepingsessie????

NOOT: Ik heb toch stellig de indruk dat  N@Tschool de term arrangeren en arrangeerruimte heeft geïntroduceerd. Voor 1996 had ik er nog nooit van gehoord. Of kan iemand het tegendeel aantonen?

Impresionante artículo y entrevista al surfista brasilero, Alcino Neto “Pirata”, que demuetra al mundo que se puede hacer surf se tenga o no discapacidad. Todo un ejemplo a seguir para todas aquellas personas con discapacidad y para toda la comunidad del surf.

El surfista brasilero, Pirata, representa el espíritu de la Misión de la Isa de una forma perfecta. Pirata no es solamente una inspiración para aquellas personas con deficiencias, sino para toda la comunidad surfística.

Alcino Neto, mejor conocido como Pirata, nació en Guaruja, Brasil, el 6 de julio de 1969.  Comenzó a surfear cuando tenía 8 años. Durante su niñéz y parte de su adolescencia, compitió en algunos eventos regionales y nacionales.  A los 16 sufrió un complicado accidente en su moto, tras ser atropellado por un conductor borracho.  Por la falta de asistencia y las heridas sufridas, su pierna izquierda fue amputada.

Todas las barreras que fueron apareciendo después del accidente fueron, de a poco quebradas, gracias a mucha determinación y fuerza de voluntad por volver a surfear.

Él se encuentra ahora produciendo su segundo DVD sobre el Surfing Adaptado. En los siguientes párrafos, Pirata, miembro del Comité de Surfing Adaptado de la ISA, comenta sobre la venidera película, entre otras tantas cosas.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de hacer el primer DVD, Surfing for all?
Surgió en la escuela de surfing que tengo en Guarujá, teniendo muy encuenta por aquellos con deficiencias, busqué trabajar en pro de ayudar millones de incapacitados, haciendo un DVD en donde se busca enseñar y mejorar las técnicas para cada deficiencia.

¿Cuál es la idea del segundo DVD?
La idea es mostrarle a las federaciones la posibilidad de tener la categoría Surf adaptado, para que sean parte de los eventos de la ISA, además de incentivar el autoestima de los nuevos atletas.

¿Cuándo va a ser lanzada la película? ¿Cuánto va a durar? Y, ¿qué vamos a ver?
El lanzamiento todavía no está previsto, pero la duración va a ser de 40 minutos y los temas son variados, dependiendo de los distintos grados de deficiencia en el deporte, las adaptaciones y las tablas usadas. También veremos una forma didáctica de clases y formas de trabajo con distintas deficiencias en el deporte.

¿Qué pretendes lograr como miembro líder del Comité para el Surfing Adaptado de la ISA?
Considero que es algo muy importante el tener un comité dirigido hacia el Surfing  Adaptado, pues sin eso dicha disciplina no tendría reglas y las personas no tendrían la voluntad de practicar el deporte. Así, se convertiría en algo sin dirección. Sería necesario acreditar a las escuelas para que puedan enseñar e mejorar su materiales didácticos.

¿Cuál es el objetivo último, el mejor escenario?
El objetivo único es que algún día podamos conquistar más adaptados en el Surfing Adaptado, y a través de la ISA, realizar un evento de la disciplina. Y, el mejor escenario sería que todas las federaciones con sus atletas deficientes, estuvieran prontos para participar en un gran evento de confraternización.

Acabas de vencer los Extremity Games, ¿cómo fue esa experiencia?
Fue un gran evento, realizándose en una piscina fue perfecto; por el acceso de los deficientes, y además todas las olas fueron iguales, ayudando a todos a desarrollar un mismo surfing.
Considero que con un evento así, el deporte solamente tiende a mejorar a cada año, si es que para el año que viene tenemos muchos más atletas. Y, para mí, consagrarme como Campeón Mundial fue la gloria que esperaba, además de la alegría ejercer la integración de los deficientes en el deporte.

Explica qué es lo que tu quieres decir con la frase: “Los límites existen solamente en tu mente”
Es una frase que uso hace ya muchos años y lo que pretende decir es que no hay límites para quien quiere vencer en la vida, sea de la manera que sea; lo más importante es buscar nuestros ideales y ser respetados por todos en el deporte. Ése es el porqué de la frase.

Algún mensaje que quieras darle a todos los surfean o no, o para aquellos que tienen alguna deficiencia:
Los límites existen solamente en tu mente.

Una raccolta imprescindibile per addentrarsi in uno di quei meandri musicali che viaggiano da sempre su binari paralleli a quelli del grande carrozzone del rock. Il surf è da sempre un genere di culto, con le sue regole e le sue eccezioni. In questo cofanetto incredibilmente curato ci si può facilmente perdere tra le grezze scale cariche di fuzz delle chitarre che anticiparono in qualche modo, almeno idealmente, le sonorità del garage e del punk. In Cowabunga! si trova tutto quello che c’è da sapere per partire a esplorare le rotte di questi suoni che hanno del miracoloso. Un viaggio che dal 1960 arriva attraverso quattro dischi al 1995 in 82 canzoni (!) e 66 pagine di booklet.
Si parte con i Fireballs e si chiude, giustamente con Dick Dale. L’interesse del box si concentra principalmente sul versante strumentale tranne che per qualche doverosa incursione in casa Beach Boys o Jan & Dean.Nascoste tra le più famose Miserlou, Pipeline e Surfin’ Bird si possono finalmente ammirare perle dimenticate come Jezebel o Moment of Truth. I primi tre dischi sono quelli di maggior interesse anche se nell’ultimo fanno bella mostra i soliti Man or astro-man? e i favolosi Aqua Velvet (di cui in Italia non si trova nulla ma che ogni surfista dovrebbe fare carte false per avere) con le loro sinuose trame estive, notturne, tra surf, western e mood latino.
La Rhino ci ha regalato un’opera immensa dal valore unico che potrebbe aprire porte uditive sorprendenti. Dopo aver incontrato questa musica potreste buttare tutti gli altri dischi, comprarvi una tavola e aspettare l’onda in ci scomparire per sempre.

Makes me want to go surf, bring on the spring!

I was quite productive this weekend in getting some new photos.  I went around Downtown San Diego the other night and managed to stop and snap a few frames.  The surf has also been A+ for most of the week.  It’s always tough for me to get out and shoot surf photos when its really good because I love being out there!  I was lucky enough to get a few amazing sessions in the past week.  Today I shot a few photos before my normal morning session in Oceanside.  Take a look at my newest photos and let me know what you think!  I love hearing feedback and advise!  I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!
