in ocean habitats, the littoral zone encompasses the entire tidal area, from submerged shoreline to cliff, tying together numerous categorised regions of the coastal area. (just ask wikipedia)

in littoral, mark dickinson has created 3 zonal poems, split by their proximity in the coastal habitat. these poems are natural, they are organic. the first, zone: inner shore; speaks to me of wild reef-breaks and waves dependent on tides

of barreling, empty pockets erupting onto slabs and sand, shells and crustaceans.

i know mark is a surfer, an amazing surfer, and i know this influenced my reading of littoral, it was hard to shake the feeling of empty waves and cavernous barrels, i’m sure a recurring theme throughout.

this being the first time i’ve ever read any lengthy poetry, and definitely the first time i ever decided to think about it further than a glance, i had to take out a pen and re-read much of it. this is nature poetry, landscape poetry, one character and the feelings that of the individual, the wildness of a life of waves and fish and coastal exploration. there are elements of local wave knowledge hidden for those who know and comment on local urban developments intruding into the lay of the land.

the metaphors are hidden deep and each section has numerous poetic rhythms. some rhyme abstractly, some are reminiscent of glitch beats, others are breathless, solid paragraphs. there are also accents and sections of colloquialism

these are poems of the elements, of northern life, of cold and rock, of swells and crustaceans, fish and weather. it is also about peace and solitude, places and discovery, and the science of water, waves, cliffs and our coast. it is about life on an edge, the edge of a country, and the edge of our habitat.

orn in 1905 in Galveston Texas, Leroy Colombo was the son of Italian immigrants.  At 7 years old he got sick with meningitis, which caused him to lose his hearing and also made him paralysed from the waist down.  His two brothers encouraged him to take up swimming as a way to strengthen his legs, and within a year Leroy was walking again.  More importantly, he discovered how much he loved being in the water.   When Leroy’s parents sent him to the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas, he hardly ever left the pool.  In his six years at school, Leroy broke several records for speed and distance.  While visiting his parents, he also made his first rescue on Galveston Beach.  He was only twelve years old.

After six years at the Texas School for the Deaf, Leroy went back to his parent’s house.  He started surfing on the local beaches, becoming one of the first people to surf in Galveston.  In 1923, Leroy joined the prestigious Toboggan Club, passing their entry test of swimming three straight hours without outside support or floating.  The same year he also became an official lifeguard, although he had been saving lives unofficially for some time.  When Leroy would notice a swimmer out too far, he would blow the whistle like crazy and pound his chest to let the swimmer know to come in.  His brothers owned a raft, seat, and umbrella rental business, and Leroy would also sometimes work a day or two for them, if they needed the help or were going on vacation.

Leroy was an amazing swimmer and the record books are full of stories about how great he was.  In 1927, he completed a 15 mile swim of the Gulf of Mexico in 11 hours.  Most of the other participants never even finished the race, dropping out either due to muscle cramps or jellyfish stings.  During a 10 mile race along the Mississippi river, he dislocated his arm at mile 8 and completed the race with one hand.  He didn’t win, but neither did the Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller of Tarzan fame, who was also competing.  He rescued two crew men from the water after a tugboat burst into flame, swimming underneath burning oil to save their lives.  Most importantly, Leroy saved over 900 lives in his career as a lifeguard, a number proudly enshrined in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Leroy wasn’t just great in the water.  He was well-known along the beach as a friendly guy with a great sense of humor.  He could read lips well and spoke clearly.  He would frequently roam the beaches alone, and he was quick to anger whenever anyone left a mess in the public facilities.  After he retired at the age of 62, he still went swimming every day.

After Leroy’s death in 1974, the citizens of Galveston erected a plaque along the sea wall in his honor.  The annual 5K run in Galveston is named after him, and there are numerous pictures of him tacked in lifeguard stations all along the beach.  Leroy is also frequently used as an example in anti-discrimination lawsuits when deaf people have been denied the right to become lifeguards due to their inability to hear people calling for help.  Though his accomplishments are many, Leroy’s greatest legacy is probably the 907 lives he saved from the blue waters of the Gulf.

Zhu Zhu Pet Chunk wants to be a surfer in life but the sad reality is that he cannot get that dream.

And by the way nor can real Pet Hamsters swim well.

And if you try to teach him to surf, you are going to be extremely disappointed in the process. His electronic equipment may get damaged in the process

There are some really good benefits of getting chunk as a pet instead of owning a real pet hamster toy

In the winter time real hamsters naturally hibernate. Even if you own one and they are kept in their cages, the usually will sleep a lot and tend to be less active in the winter time.

Even though chunk on the other hand seems quite laid back as a surfer dude, he is much more active and fun to be with than a real hamster in the winter time.

After a little nap, he is fun energetic and plays for hours on end. Yes, even though these are electronic hamster pets they do enjoy a little nap every now and again.

If you let your real live pet hamster out of the cage they may disappear on you if you are not careful.

Chunk on the other hand has an intelligent audio feature that makes him traceable. If he does surf around the house it is easy to find him after a while.

Real Hamster pets need to chew all the time to keep their teeth in good shape for biting into food but not the Zhu Zhu Pets. They are smart hamster pets trained not to chew.

The film includes surfing footage from the famous Pipeline, the beaches of Vietnam, and some of the world’s largest waves, at Cortes Bank. This film was Dana Brown’s first solo project.

I was quite productive this weekend in getting some new photos.  I went around Downtown San Diego the other night and managed to stop and snap a few frames.  The surf has also been A+ for most of the week.  It’s always tough for me to get out and shoot surf photos when its really good because I love being out there!  I was lucky enough to get a few amazing sessions in the past week.  Today I shot a few photos before my normal morning session in Oceanside.  Take a look at my newest photos and let me know what you think!  I love hearing feedback and advise!  I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!

Once upon a time — or more accurately, back in the 1970s — the van reigned supreme.  Riding in right on the heels of the fading muscle car era, the custom van became the ultimate self-expression vehicle– tricked-out and personalized to show all the world just how your bad self rolled.  They were badass, man–  a portable pampered pad that allowed you to take all your extra-curricular activities of sorts (legal or lotharious) on the road– and there were custom shops on every corner back then that would customize your ride with a kick-ass sound system, lighting, shag carpeting, Captains chairs, beds, bubble windows, louvres, spoilers, mag wheels, custom horns, CB radios– and don’t forget to top it all off with a one-off airbrushed paint job depicting your choice of Wizard, Warlock, Wave or Western scenic.  It may be time for a comeback, folks– especially with the home foreclosure rate being what it is…

So, this photo is the first in a series I will be posting featuring people as subjects.  I’m excited, as I usually do landscapes/macro/anything-but-people!

I took this photo while at the Jersey Shore over the summer with my boyfriend (see previous post for more another product of that trip).  Avalon Beach was lovely, fairly empty with lovely water.  I love to body surf, so I was quite content.  Some areas had larger waves that surfers were taking full advantage of.  I was lucky enough to snap this shot, right as the surfer hit the top of the wave.  It wasn’t until I looked at the larger image of the photo on my computer that I realized he was also touching the top of the wave.  Cool stuff.

So, anyhoo, this shot was taken with the Canon Powershot G7.  Contrast was fixed with Adobe Photoshop CS3.

There has been more than enough chatter in our comments sections to know that we fans are not happy with the way most of our favorite Marvel characters are portrayed on screen. Marvel Studios has given us two of the best comic book movies we’ve seen, Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk.; movies that have given fans hope for their future projects. Here’s where the problem arises: the Marvel movie universe will NEVER be complete without the ability to intertwine Spider-Man, the X-Men, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four into the same continuity as the Avengers. It’s time they put their money to good use and buy back their character’s rights that are currently held by other studios.

What about Sam Hammer getting gnarly over the NYC Skyline ? Boom! Shaka-laka! Or maybe you saw Mike Gleason pull into a few drainers? Nope, wrong! Didn’t happen. No Coverage of these guys? Ok how about someone else… hmmm.
