I was watching discovery channel then an idea struck me and made me realize that my dream is possible in this life time. The name of the show is Earth shocks and the dream is to surf!

The weather pattern of the earth is constantly changing and I think it is predictable. Weather is a vital factor of economics. Every industry is designed to function in harmony with the environment. With the earth’s weather changing fast from region to region, effective navigation in these economic times require up to date information and forecast on the weather patterns across the world. Thanks to the internet, weather forecast is easily accessible through pocket PC’s. But, knowing where the surf’s up is one thing, having the money to burn for fuel is another unless you’re a pro.

filipino surfer Bong Garbes

Civilizations across the world continue to be negatively affected by the changes in our planet’s climate. I consider this ludicrous. As mentioned in the earth shocks episode tonight, most people only have a day to day outlook on life and weather rather on a global scale. Though scientists are still puzzled by the behavior of storms, I think that the increase in the earth’s temperature has created a new chapter of the earth headed to something similar of Kevin Costner’s Waterworld movie. The past century’s storm trend should be enough to convince everyone that weather disturbances ahead of us are likely to be considered extreme by our parents. In relation to this, you will probably see the “surf’s up hand sign” more than your parents did in their lifetime and bigger waves more frequent.

I believe every human is unique and capable of achieving anything. I believe people, old and young, have the capability to surf. The only rule in this game is the one we put in our head.

Later alligator, this wave is mine.

On this Black Friday I’m just shopping for waves at the cliffs. The top of Hill Street gives a nice view to the east and west, so I grabbed a few early morning shots before hitting the cliffs. There was a cold stiff offshore breeze which gave the surfers a little trouble catching waves but the wind died down after the sun came up. The swell was building; marine reports say the size should hold through Saturday.

On November 29th, in Waimea Valley, the Rell Sunn Aloha Jam will take place at 7 p.m. On hand to perform are Henry Kapono, Jake Shimabukuro, Paula Fuga, Cyril Pahanui, Kaukahi and surfer Rob Machado. Other special guests are set to make appearances to honor the “Queen of Makaha” for the Rell Sunn Bronze Memorial Project. A special auction and raffle will take place at the Aloha Jam, where an array of surfboards from the pros and new items will be up for grabs. A special surfboard shaped by North Shore Shaper, Pat Rawson will have images by Clark Little Photography place on the deck of the board (estimated value up to $5000).

Ticket to the Aloha Jam range from $25 to $75 and are on sale a Surf N Sea in Haleiwa, Boardriders on the North Shore, HIC in town, and online at www.ticketjunior.com. For more information and to purchase tickets or make a contribution to the Memorial Bronze Fund, visit www.rellsuun.com.

Sunn’s Menehune Surf Contest was the starting point for many of today’s top Hawaiian surfers. This contest is now in its 34th year and also takes place this weekend from November 28-30. The purpose of this program is to educate the public, especially children, about sportsmanship and the environment and to combat juvenile delinquency. Events include body board, long board, and short board, and each event is broken into age and gender categories. The entrance fee is $10 per event and each child is limited to two events. Similar contests are usually $25 to $100 per event. Each contestant receives a t-shirt with contest advertising on it, assorted surf necessities, magazines, literature about the dangers of the sun, early cancer screening, and environmental awareness.

The Menehune Surf Contest is held every year at Makaha Beach. All children 12 years old and under are welcome to participate in the contest, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

I recently read a great biography on Rell Sunn called Fierce Heart, which was written by my high school English teacher, Stuart Holmes Coleman. I highly recommend reading this book! You can purchase it on Coleman’s website: http://stuart-coleman.com.

Wow. It’s warming up and I have discovered a pair of shorts I have yet to wear. Like many other items of clothing I own they are just a little too snug round the waist.

(Sighing wistfully) If I only had a waist.

Another exciting thing is that today’s photo is one of my favourites so far.

Not only does it prove for once and all that I have absolutely no arse, the picture also suggests I may be an amputee.

So without further ado here I am…

One leg + no arse = hot patootie

Bottom: My bottom (if that’s what you’d call it) is encased in never-before-worn on YoD Think Mink denim shorts

We walked into the Muchik Surf School yesterday to ask a few questions about the surfing scene in Huanchaco, and ended up whiling away the afternoon in the company of Margarita and Chicho Huamanchumo.

While we were waiting for Chicho (who along with brother Omar is the main surf instructor), Margarita told us that if we had any questions about Huanchaco she could help us, as she’d been born here.

Huanchaco is a town that is growing at an increasingly breakneck pace, and so to hear that she had been born and raised here piqued my interest. “How long has your family lived here?” I asked.

“Over four thousand years,” Margarita said with pride. “We’ve lived in Chan Chan since the pre-Inca times.” Two and a half hours and 6 pages of scrawled notes later, Rob and I emerged into the sunlight with a much deeper picture of the area’s history from some of its most knowledgeable inhabitants.

We first met Margarita the first day we arrived in Huanchaco, when we stopped by Muchik looking for leads on an apartment. She called Johnny, who eventually took us to the place we’re renting now. We’ve exchanged smiles and waves from then on, but this was the first time we’d really sat down and talked with her.

She’s a friendly woman with a passion for this place and a deep knowledge of the place which she attributes to her grandfather’s stories. The Huamanchumo family is one of two remaining families still living in the Huanchaco area.

Chicho told us this story about their origins:

They say that the god Naylamp was sailing down the coast, from Tumbes to Lima, discovering new places and founding new cities. When he came to the peninsula of Huanchaco they saw that the cove was filled with abundant and delicious fish, types they had never seen before.

Naylamp and his warriors made an offering and called the place “Wuankarute,” which in the Muchik language means “The lagoon of the golden fish.” Naylamp left to continue his quest down the coast, but three warriors stayed to found the village of Huanchaco, and the civilizations of the Moche and Chimu.

The warriors were Guaman-Chumu, Shilmaza, and one more whose line has disappeared. The descendents of Shilmaza live now in Huanchaquito, and those of Guaman-Chumu (which means “the bird that flies,” said Margarita) now run a surf school in Huanchaco, just a few meters off the beach where the warrior originally set foot in his new homeland.

Here are some surfing images from shoots I’ve been at from the past couple weeks. With the start of fall and the dusting off of wetsuits and booties Virginia Beach has been getting a pretty consistent swell starting with the nor’easter of 2009.
To supplement the smaller swell days a small group of locals has started practicing tow in’s. I was lucky enough to be at the beach shooting some images of the old Coast Guard Station while they were out having some fun. Normally seen on the west coast in places like Maverick’s and the Hawaiian Islands for big surf, using the jet ski they were able to get a lot more speed and power than normal, which resulted in some pretty big airs. Looked like lots of fun and definitely fun photographing.
