I Love Techno 09! How I wish I had been there. Myself and a group of friends went last year and it was some of the most hassle free out of country clubbing I have ever embarked on (anyone who has tried to reach the Benicassim festival can testify to this). We jumped on the Eurostar and after a couple of hours were nestled in the picturesque city of Brugge, before stomping off to Ghent for one of the best nights of my life.

So I was spitting feathers when this mangled girl saunters up to me last weekend, asking for a lighter, wearing an I Love Techno 09 fleece (who the fuck honestly wears a fleece anymore, especially to a rave? In fact who buys fleeces anymore? Actually why the fuck are ‘I Love Techno’ even selling fleeces?). Anyway…  we got into a conversation and she harped on about how amazing the whole thing had been, that Dave Clarke smashed it and SMD live were awesome (standard). By this point I wanted to spit in her drink, she wouldn’t have noticed either but I’m not that spiteful! Besides I couldn’t even muster moisture let alone spit.

So in celebration of mangled-random girl’s amazing night at I Love Techno here is as many of the main mixes I could find. If anyone finds a copy of Dave Clarke, Fake Blood, Laurent Garnier or the Crookers, please send me the link, although I doubt they exist.

Sul sito di Next, supplemento mensile culturale del quotidiano francese Libération, Olivier Wicker intervista Uffie (1987), “la protetta dei Justice”. Gossip a parte – Uffie è incinta – la notizia è che dopo circa tre anni di attesa e aspettative sta per uscire l’album d’esordio della Lolita di casa Ed Banger: a febbraio 2010, dice l’etichetta di culto per i club di mezzo mondo. Il primo singolo, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, che dà anche il titolo all’album, invece uscirà questo mese (il videoclip, apprendo dal profilo Twitter di Uffie – occhio ai fake, come segnala sul suo myspace -, è stato girato il 1° Ottobre scorso). Wicker, che presumibilmente ha ascoltato l’album in anteprima, scrive: “L’omaggio alle sonorità anni Ottanta è onnipresente ma distillato da piccoli tocchi, in sottili riferimenti, a volte quasi subliminali”.
Nel maggio 2007, accompagnato dalla fotografa Chiara Santarelli (la foto qui sotto è sua), ho incontrato Uffie a Parigi e qualche mese dopo ho pubblicato l’intervista su Beat Magazine (sul numero di Luglio-Agosto 2007). Per sapere qualcosa in più della prossima (electro-)popstar ecco, qui di seguito, l’intervista edita più qualche outtake/scarto della stessa, finora inedito.

Uffie, vero Anna-Catherine Hartley, vive in un quartiere di Parigi che lei stessa definisce un po’ “ghetto”: in effetti i palazzoni abbondano. Anche se vive in Francia da più di tre anni, col francese se la cava meglio a scriverlo che a parlarlo e il suo grado di comprensione è sufficiente, niente di più. D’altronde è americana, di Miami, quindi la sua madrelingua è quella universale, e questo può costituire una sorta di attenuante. A vederla fuori dal palco e non in pose iper-trendy come appare su siti e riviste di mezzo mondo, è una ragazza “normale”: di una bellezza non comune, ok, ma alla mano, a tratti timida, vestita senza dare troppo nell’occhio e quindi in fin dei conti senza l’aria di chi si sente superiore o quanto meno speciale (anche se dalle risposte capirete che aveva una discreta fretta). La cosa che può colpire chi semplicemente la incrocia per strada, magari senza conoscere il suo lato pubblico, è il biancore della pelle: ai livelli di Nicole Kidman. Insomma Uffie è umana, anche se ad appena diciannove anni ha invaso i club e conquistato le riviste (non solo musicali) più alla moda; tutto senza aver ancora pubblicato il suo primo album. Sarà che fa parte della scuderia Ed Banger, che per molti è stata l’etichetta del 2006; tra l’altro fondata da Pedro Winter (aka Busy P), già manager dei Daft Punk. Sarà che Dj Feadz, uno degli artisti della label parigina, è il suo compagno di palco ma anche di vita, e questa notizia ha stuzzicato anche l’aspetto gossip del personaggio. Sarà che uno dei suoi primi singoli, Ready To Uff in realtà sta per Ready To Fuck. Chissà. A voler definire il suo genere comunque si può parlare di electro-rap; ma non mancano gli spunti pop.
Perché hai scelto di vivere a Parigi?
In realtà ci sono venuta in vacanza a trovare mio padre che lavorava qui, poi la città mi è piaciuta veramente molto ed eccomi qui.
Dalla tua esperienza quali sono le differenti sostanziali tra il modo di vita americano e quello europeo?
Penso che quello europeo sia molto più aperto culturalmente. Negli Usa c’è troppa pressione riguardo sposarsi, andare al college e cose simili.
Stai suonando più in Europa o negli Usa?
Negli ultimi mesi ho passato qualche settimana negli Usa suonandoci varie volte. In Europa suono circa tre volte alla settimana.
Ci sono differenze tra i club europei e quelli statunitensi?
Quelli americani sono più commerciali, inoltre puoi entrare solo se hai più di 21 o, a volte, 23 anni; solitamente poi le persone vanno lì per farsi vedere. In Europa ci si va per divertirsi, fare i pazzi e fare casino.
Ma ti manca qualcosa degli Usa?
Uhmmm… capire la gente. Qui non posso capire tutto quello che dice la gente.
Canterai mai in francese?
No, ci ho anche provato ma non mi è piaciuto molto.
Come ti sembra la scena musicale di queste parti?
La scena francese è tornata in voga negli ultimi due d’anni, e la cosa veramente bella è che la musica che produciamo qui è davvero varia. Penso sia una scena che continuerà a crescere.
In una recente intervista a Beat Magazine, Cinematic Orchestra ha detto che “Parigi è vecchia” e che “i movimenti culturali, soprattutto musicali, non risiedono più qui”…
Non sono d’accordo. C’è stato solo un periodo in cui qui non è stato un granché, ma i primi tempi in cui il french touch e i Daft Punk sono venuti alla ribalta sono stati fantastici! Ok, poi per un po’ tutti hanno cercato di fare la stessa cosa: i Daft Punk si sono evoluti ma nessun altro si è evoluto con loro; quindi tutto è morto per un bel po’ di tempo. Penso che ora però realtà come la Ed Banger e gente della Institubes come Para One, TTC o Surkin stanno facendo molto bene, stanno spaccando in tutto il mondo facendo vedere quanto sono bravi e che non si tratta solo di roba commerciale. Ci sono molti artisti di talento qui e il mondo se ne sta accorgendo.
Il tuo album è molto atteso: queste aspettative ti creano tensione?
Certo. Il mio primo singolo è uscito tipo un anno fa ed ha fatto successo molto molto velocemente. Ci sono parecchie aspettative sensazionali, la gente si aspetta un album sorprendente. Insomma tanta pressione.
E ti spaventa l’attenzione della stampa nei tuoi confronti?
Non proprio, la cosa più importante per me non è ciò che dice la stampa, anche se sicuramente mi intimidisce.
Pensi si possano individuare degli argomenti ricorrenti nei tuoi testi?
Anche se non me ne accorgo quando li scrivo penso che i temi ricorrenti dei miei testi siano vivere e divertirsi. In qualche modo direi… no, non aggiungerei nient’altro.
Cosa pensi del ruolo di myspace?
Quando ho cominciato ci ho messo una canzone, così, per divertirmi, ma su myspace riesci a far passare cose che altrove farebbero fatica a essere accettate. Per la musica è un mezzo piuttosto importante, specie se sei agli esordi; e poi ci sono davvero tutti.
Ho letto una tua intervista in cui dici che la Ed Banger ti piace anche perché non ha come primo obiettivo il profitto. Ora come ora rifiuteresti la proposta di una major?
Sì, lo sto già facendo. Se accettasi, quello che faccio sarebbe accessibile a tutti, ma dico sempre no. Un giorno magari avrò voglia di farlo ma ora come ora mi voglio sentire libera di fare quello che mi pare, mi sento parte della scena underground e sto provando con tutte le mie forze a restare underground.
Che tipo di rapporto c’è tra gli artisti Ed Banger? E’ veramente una specie di famiglia, come sembra dall’esterno?
Sì, assolutamente. Passiamo molto tempo insieme e tutto sa davvero più di famiglia piuttosto che di etichetta: non c’è competizione, non c’è pressione a produrre; si cerca davvero di impegnarsi nella musica e divertirsi insieme.

Gli outtake
Che ne dici dell’hip hop francese?
Non mi piace molto. Forse perché non capisco i testi ma in realtà c’è qualcosa nella parte strumentale che non mi piace.
Si può dire che alla Ed Banger avete tutti un background hip hop?
Sì… beh, Dj Mehdi è nell’hip hop da quando ha dodici anni, o qualcosa del genere, poi…
Mr. Oizo?
Lui non proprio, è più nell’electro. A dirla tutta ognuno ha un background differente: rock, electro, rap… è difficile da spiegare.
Ti senti parte di una scena?
Non proprio, ma in qualche modo mi sento più vicina alla scena dance/electro piuttosto che a quella hip hop.
Come funzionano i tuoi live?
Giro sempre con Dj Feadz, che cura tutta la parte musicale. Lo show è molto simile a quelli dell’old school con un dj e un mc. Anche se non mi si può definire proprio un mc lo show funziona proprio così, in un modo classico: un dj e un artista.
C’è un posto particolare o una città dove sogni di esibirti dal vivo?
Un posto dove avrei voluto suonare ma non ci sono riuscita è il Brasile. Non ce l’ho fatta per problemi di visto. Vorrei andarci perché ho sentito che lì la gente è veramente pazza.

Cette nuit à Paris avait lieu la première Nuit Electro au Grand Palais… Au programme: Birdy Nam Nam, Etienne de Crecy, Surkin , Felix Da Housecat, Mondkopf… se sont succédés aux platines de 18h à 6h du matin !

L’événement s’est d’ailleurs également déroulé au Showcase, où des concerts Electro-Rock étaient proposés de 19h à 22h30 (Naïve New Beaters, Pony Pony Run Run et We Have Band)

Che bastasse leggere per capire che qualcosa era davvero cambiato non ci voleva un genio. Come non dovevamo di certo consultare l’oracolo di Delfi per capire che ormai il filone minimale fosse sperduto in qualche oceano lontano dalla riva. Ma, la musica è gusto, e il gusto è personale quindi ci sentiamo quasi di definirlo indiscutibile. In ogni caso, osservando la line up, siamo indubbiamente felici della presenza italiana rinnovata, ci sentiamo orgogliosi, di aver aperto una bella breccia nel clubbing europeo, diciamo che era anche il momento, o semplicemente che l’orgoglio ormai ci stava soffocando, ma finalmente anche noi ci stiamo prendendo le nostre rivincite. Sinceramente parlando, non cordiamo interamente sulle scelte artistiche proposte in questa edizioni. Ci sono a nostro avviso dei nomi che francamente anche se rimanevano a casa, non cambiava nulla. Notiamo poi, baluardi del buon gusto musicale presenti anche per il 2009, è questo invece ci fa molto piacere, ma mai quanto non leggere più determinati nomi che finalmente sono rimasti tranquilli a casetta loro.

A noi quindi, se dovessimo dare un giudizio sulla line up presentata, questo  ” I LOVE TECHNO ” ci convince, e molto probabilmente andremo ad osservare da vicino come si comportano gli artisti. Per il resto cosa dire, l’onda dell’house che doveva arrivare ed ammorbidire le sonorità?, qualcuno sa dove sia andata? magari è in colonna a Casale!. Quest’odio contro la nuova elettronica?, piace, non piace? ma alla fine come sempre è il mercato che parla, sentenzia e fa prendere determinate decisioni. Siamo anche onesti a dire che svendersi totalmente per seguire una corrente musicale non è per noi il miglior modo di lavorare. Già in Italia abbiamo visto una manifestazione importante fare una rapida sterzata su nuove sonorità, sicuramente qualcuno si è sentito la terra sotto i piedi tremare ed ha preferito osservare anche altrove.

Avec un peu plus de 26 000 gkoot (sur gkoot.com), vous avez sûrement du déjà écouter ce groupe très prometteur ! Nous avions envie de vous faire découvrir un peu plus leur univers…

Comment le groupe « COLORSPAT » est né, votre rencontre ?

John et moi étions étudiants à Toulouse et vivions dans le même campus lors de notre rencontre. Ce qui a engagé la conversation entre nous, c’est que nous étions tous les deux originaires de la côte d’azur… Très vite on s’est rendu compte de notre intérêt commun pour la musique électronique façon Justice, Surkin, Yuksek, enfin toute cette famille d’artistes montants, dans la lignée des Daft Punk.
Avant de lancer COLORSPAT, j’étais DJ et John mixait chez lui pour le plaisir. Puis un jour on a organisé une soirée qui a réuni environ 200 personnes de notre campus, et on a mixé à deux pour la première fois. Suite au succès de la soirée, on a décidé de s’associer. Peu de temps après, on a créé notre premier morceau, un remix de “Scatman John – Scatman” sous le nom et les couleurs de COLORSPAT . (sourire)

Pourquoi un univers si coloré ?

Et bien toute cette couleur c’est pour représenter la fête, la jeunesse et une sorte de trash attitude version bonbon !

Avez-vous des nouveaux titres de prévus, des collaborations ?

Actuellement on travaille sur la finition d’une prod’ déjantée aux paroles… incompréhensibles ! (rires) On est plutôt du genre perfectionniste, donc on ne sortira rien officiellement tant qu’on aura pas le sentiment que le travail est bel et bien terminé. C’est également ce côté perfectionniste qui fait que nous ne sommes actuellement sur aucun label. Nous ne nous considérons pas encore assez “bons” pour signer nos productions. Nous avons du temps pour progresser devant nous, alors nous ne nous précipitons pas sur les premières propositions.
En ce qui concerne les collaborations, nous avons une liste assez conséquente de projets, mais il va falloir que l’on fasse des choix car malgré notre volonté, tout ne sera pas réalisable dans l’absolu.

Qu’es ce que Gkoot vous a apporté ?

Gkoot, pour nous, c’est un moyen de partager notre passion, de découvrir de nouveaux artistes, tout en nous faisant connaître. En avril dernier, on a été sélectionné par le fameux magazine Onlyfordj grâce à Gkoot, et notre titre “Fucking cat” a été désigné N°1 de la sélection “Onlyfordj’s Top 10″, ce qui est très gratifiant pour nous !
En résumé nous pensons que ce site peut être un réel tremplin pour les jeunes artistes comme nous. (sourire)

i got up at 8am just to see the lineup (not really, i’m meant to have a 3hour lab which they moved 11:30…thanks guys) but anyway here it is and i reckon it looks pretty amazing, this will demolish the electro/house lineup at parklife this year.

Heads Will Roll says…

The first details from Stereosonic have just been released. Tickets go on sale Thursday August 20 and first release tickets will be selling for $107 inclusive of booking fee.  The line-up is a mix of the your commercial and your underground. At Heads Will Roll we’re excited about Zombie Nation, Surkin, the Crookers, the Bloody Beetroots, Drop the Lime, Alter Ego, Tim Sweeney, Bag Raiders, Canyons, Miss Kittin & Hacker, Cut Copy DJs and Deadmau5. so i was supposed to have an internet-free weekend, but my kind host has left me in his university’s computer room while he does some photocopying, or something. this afternoon i trawled around london looking for phonica – printing a map might have helped – until i was helped my a kindly policeman on piccadilly circus who just happened to have a map of the capital in his pocket. sweet. so i picked up some random oddities for super cheap in the uber-cool soho record store (which just received those crazy ark 1 tees), and i also grabbed the juan maclean’s one day vinnil (with added marc romboy/emperor machine/surkin) in hmv of all places.

meanwhile, whoever isn’t at airbound is certainly keeping the bodytonic site ticking over. they’ve just announced the tracklist for chromeo’s forthcoming dj-kicks mix. i’m stumped – the only track i know is the eagles cover they’ve just released. wow. i’m excited. nice to see young shazam getting a look-in.

As we missed out on deadmau5 twice at Sonar, and Dour, this brings a smile upon our faces. Deadmau5 must be the hottest dj/producer on the planet by now. So quite a relief he’s gonna make it back for #ILT09. (Which seems to be the official twitter hash tag, btw)

Bloody Beetroots, what can I say? The Italian Stallions of rave & electro led by Asian/American Kung Fu Master, Mister Steve Aoki, leader of DIM MAK.

What the hell is a Dim Mak?

Simian Mobile Disco + live set! I have seen this already, but SMB is still amazing! And hard! And therefore: recommended! Not quite convinced by their new singles “Audacity of Huge”, Synthesise” and “10000 Horses Can’t be wrong” from their upcoming 2nd album. But that first album “Attack Decay Sustain Release” is a classic. Every track on that album is a monsta! So bring it on Simian!

The Proxy! The best export product from Russian soil since Anna Kournikova! DDN met him (Proxy, not Anna) last year in Antwerp, he’s a young nice guy. Certainly one of the break-through artists of 2008. He’s got plenty of dark tunes and remixes, and don’t forget his latest banger: Who Are You!? (remixed by the Bloody Beetroots)

Fake Blood: don’t tell me you haven’t heard of ‘Mars’ + a bunch of remixes for The Count & Sinden (Beeper), Hot Chip, Little Boots (remember Elektra? See post Justice label), or their version of Cheap & Cheerful - The Kills and many more.

Buraka Som Sistema: the dance hype from Portugal. Not 100% my piece of cake, but still very hot at the moment.

Surkin: nice dj sets with retro, 80’s, rave all-in-one. Another talented kid, but you have to ignore his arrogance on stage and dance to the music.

And last but not least…Don Rimini! Finally! This guy is so…, well whatever…I’m gonna repost the Sonar 2009 video, that should do the trick. Memories, baby! One of the best parties (in 2009) so far!

i thought mondays were supposed to suck? i had an excellent interview (completely non-music related), found an excellent charity compilation with tracks by diplo, lcd, eli and devendra banhart, and when i hit up my google reader i saw some innanet-gems.

buraka som sistema are giving away a new mixtape, and fool’s gold have rounded up ALL the free tracks they’ve given to rcrd lbl in advance of a party the two are putting on tomorrow. shame it’s in nyc. anyway my personal favourites have to be the surkin remix of acid life, a-trak’s remix of bounce, and pretty much everything involving kid sister. one in particular is her freestyle over green velvet’s shake and pop, the standout from the otherwise mediocre pillowface mix cd. apparently her album is on the way – see here for an insightful interview.

Sometimes you just gotta let it marinate. I need to make something I’m proud of. So don’t hate! We’re doing it as fast as we can. In the meantime, let’s tell knock-knock jokes on Twitter: Knock knock. Who’s there? Your album. Oh, wait– just kidding. It’ll never end.
