The ‘sound’ of a brand is as important as how it looks, as the importance of regional accents is brought into spotlight.

56 per cent of Brits will listen to a special offer or promotion if they like sound of the voice delivering the message, with the Queen’s English and Scottish accents being the most popular accents. The Cheryl Cole factor means that Geordie was voted the third most favoured accent according to the poll of consumers by Nuance Communications.

Liverpool and Birmingham faired poorly in the research, with scouse and brumie brogues deemed to be the least effective for upselling purposes.

Ian Turner, northern European general manager at Nuance Communications, says it is human nature to react differently to different voice types. “Some of the world’s biggest companies invest millions of pounds each year ensuring that the way their brands ‘look’ and ‘feel’ reflect the values and beliefs of the brand. Yet very few organisations actually think about how their brand ‘speaks’, despite the fact that the vast majority of customer service communication and advertising is based on listening.”

British woman would rather see curvier models splashed across the covers of glossy magazines, a survey has revealed today.

The study carried out by Dove skin care brand found that advertising campaigns which use airbrushing techniques to portray “unattainable perfection” in woman is leading to a rise in depression and low self-esteem.

A lot of the time airbrushing techniques will be used in order to slim down the waistlines of already skinny models.

However the figures released from the survey show that woman would feel more comfortable with the use of curvier models such as Beyoncé and Kelly Brooke.

A total of 96% of women questioned said they felt the models used in beauty advertising were not a true representation of women today.

And more than 40% said the adverts made them feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Today’s research shows a sharp increase in the number of female consumers who want to see “real women” used in beauty advertising – up from 74% in 2004 to 95% in 2009.

The findings also come after a controversial statement by supermodel Kate Moss who recently said “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”.Find out what else Kate Moss has been up to recently

We asked 100-ish teachers recently about the techniques they use to decide which GCSE Maths tier – Foundation or Higher – to enter their students in. You might be familiar with the approaches they described but perhaps you’ve not seen them ranked before, in order of popularity.

1. Mock exams

Respondents used mock exams as the way in which they determined which tier pupils should be entered for. Some entered pupils into two mock exams, one for each tier, to determine which was most appropriate.

2. Teacher evaluation of past performance

Respondents mentioned using teacher assessment or evaluation, conducted through a number of means including formative assessment throughout the year and class observation. For some, the key thing to observe was whether a pupil was capable of achieving a B grade. If they were not, they would automatically be entered at the foundation tier.

3. SATS results

Many were using KS3 SATS results to judge which tier was best for each student. The level used as a benchmark varied from level 5 to level 6. In some cases, SATS were used to determine which sets pupils were put into. Their set then determined automatically which exam they would be entered into.

4. Attitude of pupil and / or parents / carers

The attitude of pupils was a key factor for many. It was important that pupils were prepared to work hard and attend regularly. It was also important that they were sufficiently confident and calm to cope with a more difficult exam without panicking. Some respondents mentioned taking into consideration what the pupil wanted to do next in their studies or career. It was also clear that there was pressure from parents for pupils to take the higher tier exam.

5. Performance in other modules

Those taking a modular exam often used the results of previous modules to determine the tier used for the next.

6. Skills in algebra

A number of respondents mentioned that facility in algebra was the main factor in success at the higher tier and it was perceived algebra skills that determined which tier a pupil was entered into.

In a survey of over a thousand quotes from the X Factor finalists, judges and fans of the show, Geordie lad Joe McElderry has emerged as the most relaxed contestant. The poll, undertaken by leading Australian beer brand Foster’s uses a series of language based algorithms to gauge how worried or carefree someone is.

Popular social networking site Twitter formed a crucial part of the survey, helping to determine that with a score of 80%, bookie’s favourite Joe was well and truly the most ‘No Worries’ contestant out of this year’s remaining hopefuls.

Foster’s brand manager Natalie Clearie said: “It’s incredible that Joe McElderry manages to maintain such a No Worries attitude despite the pressure he is under – we wonder if he has some Australian in him? His fellow finalists could learn a lot from his laid back, Aussie attitude, and who knows, it might even win them some more votes this weekend.”

On the opposite end of the scale, Cheryl’s other act Lloyd Daniels is riding low with a score of only 10%. With twins John & Edward gone he is now favourite to leave and having already faced the bottom two twice before, the odds are not looking good for the Welsh singer.

A survey of 5,000 Britons, conducted by pet healthcare company Bob Martin, showed that dog owners get more exercise walking their pet than people who go to gyms.

Those without a dog spend an average of just one hour and 20 minutes a week exercising by going to the gym or walking or jogging. Two dog walks a day each lasting 24 minutes and three longer walks a week each lasting 30 minutes give pet owners seven hours’ exercise a week, reports the Daily Express.

47 per cent of non-pet owners admit they do no exercise. The survey revealed that 86 per cent of dog owners enjoy walking. On the other hand, only 16 per cent of gym users actively enjoy it.

Many moons ago, Apple announced to the cheering masses that iTunes should now be freed by and large

Many moons ago, Apple announced to the cheering masses that iTunes should now be freed by and large of the ridiculous DRM which hinders legal and illegal users of content alike.

A new study reveals that Apple mobile product users actually have been trained by the App Store or other means to pay for more media than others do.

OK, so isn’t this contradictory? Surely DRM free will mean less overall payment for media since more devices of multiple-owning, and hardcore purchasing, Apple fans will use the media available? Well, yes.

Of course, this is saying that Apple iTunes and mobile device users are happy to pay for data. Not so. I believe that – as an owner myself – it is possible that the torture cell of paying is what’s going on here and that less payment means even more willing users, even if those users were resigned to paying in the first place.

With the Clothes Show Live just around the corner (December 4th-9th), the fashion and beauty event conducted a survey of British women to find out about their designer clothing secrets.

Some of the revelations came as no surprise to us here at Secret Sales HQ – such as females prefer shopping with their friends than their man – but others were a little less predictable.

Believe it or not, 64 per cent of people would rather turn down a date with their ideal man in return for a shopping trip with Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole. Have you girls not seen her fashion choices on the X Factor?

The research also noted that on average, us girls will spend £68 on birthday presents for that special someone in our lives, but £137 on a typical shopping spree.

Caryn Franklin, who will be presenting the Birmingham show, told us that people were spending longer on finding the perfect piece of clothing and were opting to spend more on single items.

“We now understand the true cost of cheap clothes on the lives of the people who have to make them, we are just much more discerning,” she explained.

Back in early October I posted a link to a survey seeking views about whether services should have democratic oversight at all and if so, whether that oversight should come at council, regional or national level.

I am very grateful to so many people for taking the time to complete the survey and I have put together the slide pack below which summarises the results.

town hall or whitehall

While (as might be expected given most of the respondents are from the world of local government) there is a general sense that there are a number of public services where accountability should switch from Whitehall to townhalls, it’s a more mixed picture.

Significant numbers of respondents feel that a number of more administrative functions such as electoral registration, registration, managing car parks, housing benefits and council tax collection, don’t require democratic oversight at any level. And for some of these services where respondents felt some kind of role for politicians was appropriate, a large number favoured it being at a national level. There was also strong support for regional oversight of some services such as transport, emergency planning and waste disposal.

And when it comes to social care the survey suggests that most people continue to see an important role for national politicians.

My tentative conclusions? Perhaps the debate about devolving power from central to local government tends to get stuck because:

some things are better done at a regional level but in most parts of the country there are not regionally elected politicians

belief in the need for national oversight of personal social services is strong and probably reflects our cultural belief in uniform outcomes (this was something the Lyons report highlighted that compared with other European states we seem to have less tolerance of regional variations)

potentially councils could seek to move out of some of the more administrative functions they perform which might align with a stronger focus on councils as community leaders

it would be interesting to run a similiar survey of elected representatives to see how their views match up

En Gallup undersøgelse blandt to millioner mennesker viser, at kun 17 % bringer sine styrker i spil dagligt.

En af verdens største ledelsestænkere, Peter Drucker, sagde på et tidspunkt: “Most people think they know what they are good at. They are usually wrong… And yet, a person can perform only from strength“. Kan det tænkes, at udfordringen mere er, at vi slet ikke er klar over, hvad vores styrkesider er? At vi måske ikke ved, hvad vi er bedst til?

Vil du sige, at du kender dine egne styrker?
