DRBD has entered a new phase. After being developed out of tree for 9 years, and after an extended review and streamlining phase since March, Phil submitted DRBD to be merged into 2.6.32 release of the Linux mainline kernel. The submission was accepted by block layer maintainer Jens Axboe, who merged DRBD in September, then deferred to the 2.6.33 merge window, and this morning Linus pulled DRBD into his tree.

That makes DRBD an integral part of Linux, starting with the 2.6.33 release expected in a few weeks’ time.

We have something to celebrate.

Esta semana (quinta-feira para ser exato) foi disponibilizada a versão final de uma das mais populares distribuições Linux. O openSUSE 11.2 já vem com a premissa de várias melhorias: Nova versão do KDE, Gnome, OpenOffice , Kernel e outras ferramentas.

O destaque vem com a otimização do KDE + Firefox (o que era um terror para os usuários de KDE com a lentidão do panda vermelho na plataforma pinguim) que é muito bem vinda. Ah, o KDE é o 4.3 e a área de trabalho está linda.

Houve mudança na instalação quanto o Bootloader, onde agora é tudo mais fácil e se houver configurações incorretas, serão mostrados avisos.
KDE 3 não irá mais estar presente na instalação, claro que se quiser terá que usar os repositórios de pacotes não-suportados.
Também temos mais de 1.000 softwares opensource disponíveis para instalação da distro.

E muito mais, mas muito mais mesmo!

Este post suena casi más a aquel álbum (entonces se decía así) de Queen, A Night at the Opera, que a otra cosa; pero lo cierto es que fue en la Bolsa y no en otro sitio… Se trataba de un evento organizado por RTS, una empresa alemana de software que entre otras cosas vende una herramienta para hacer “Algoritmic Trading”; la entrada la hizo gente de MEFF, nuestro Mercado de Futuros, muy buena por cierto.

¿De qué va esto del Algoritmic Trading? Pues se trata ni más ni menos que del uso del hardware y del software necesario para lanzar órdenes al mercado minimizando costes y maximizando beneficios.  No merece mucho la pena extenderse en esto porque en la Red habrá cientos de lugares que cuenten esto con mucho más detalle de lo que lo pueda hacer yo, pero lo que sí me llamó la atención es lo lejos que está esto de la naturaleza de los Mercados de Valores como recurso de financiación para las empresas y de lo poco que tiene que ver su cotización con la buena gestión empresarial. Vale, estoy exagerando un poco, pero hay bastante verdad en esto.

Porque en realidad el Algoritmic Trading trata de lanzar estrategias especulativas en el corto plazo y aprovecharse de las ventajas que aparecen en ventanas temporales de milisegundos en el mercado. Estrategias con nombres tan sugerentes como “Iceberg”, “Guerrilla”, “Sniffer” son las que diariamente gestionan aproximadamente de media el 70% de las transacciones realizadas en los Mercados de Valores; estrategias al alcance de unos pocos, ya que este porcentaje está lanzado por el 2% de las empresas que operan, estrategias que necesitan de profesionales muy sesudos que inventan y reinventan casi diariamente sus propios algoritmos matemáticos; capaces de interpretar mediante algoritmos genéticos y redes neuronales tendencias en el mercado . Hasta tal punto llegan estas estrategias que incluso se lanzan órdenes que serán interpretadas por los algoritmos de la competencia como rumores en el mercado con la intención de confundir a la competencia y sacar beneficio del mismo.

Aun así, son tan breves las oportunidades existentes que los operadores buscan la mínima distancia física a los Mercados de Valores para que la latencia (tiempo de respuesta) sea menor y poder ejecutar así un mayor número de órdenes. 

Pues podríamos ponernos a pensar si con los tiempos que corren esto esta bien, o mal, o todo lo contrario, pues como diría Solbes, “podríamos”, pero no lo haremos, hoy no toca.

De todas formas, lo más llamativo,  resultó ser la presentación de la gente de RTS con Suse Linux como Sistema Operativo, en la foto puede verse o mejor dicho, no puede verse el botón de Inicio con la banderita del Windows, en lugar de eso, ahí está el camaleón de Suse. El resto de la imagen es la herramienta Tango de esta gente. Bien, podríamos haber titulado este post un camaleón en la Bolsa.

Huit mois après leur annonce concernant l’interopérabilité de leurs environnements de virtualisation respectifs, Microsoft et Red Hat ont livré aujourd’hui les premiers résultats de leur collaboration. Les deux entreprises annoncent qu’elles ont mené à bien les tests et la validation de ces systèmes et qu’elles supportent désormais les environnements de virtualisation qui combinent Windows Server 2008 et Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4.

« C’est une annonce d’importance que nous avons faite en février, insiste Mike Evans, vice-président corporate development de Red Hat. Il n’y avait jamais eu d’accord d’interopérabilité entre nos deux sociétés. Il rappelle par ailleurs qu’il n’y a pas d’arrangement financier, de propriété intelelctuelle ou autre. “Il s’agit d’un test d’interopérabilité pur,” ajoute-t-il en faisant référence à d’autres partenariats noués par Microsoft avec Sun ou Novell.

Les travaux du duo consistent à étendre le support de la virtualisation sur les deux plateformes. Red Hat accepte déjà les environnements de VMware alors que Microsoft supporte les plateformes associées au Suse Linux de Novell. En juillet, par ailleurs, Microsoft avait annoncé sa contribution au développement de pilotes de périphériques pour la virtualisation au sein du noyau Linux.

Dans le détail, les deux entreprises ont validé l’accueil de Windows Server 2003, 2008 et Windows Server 2008 R2 par RHEL 5.4 avec l’hyperviseur Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) de Red Hat. De la même façon, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 pourra tourner sur des plateformes hôtes sous Windows Server 2008 et Windows Server 2008 R2 avec Hyper-V.

Mike Neil, directeur général de Windows Server et de la virtualisation serveur chez Microsoft, a précisé dans un billet de blog que cette coopération allait au-delà de l’OS et que les deux parties prenantes « ont sélectionné des applications Microsoft qui recevront un support technique spécifique dans le cas où elles tournent sur “un logiciel de virtualisation certifié. » Il s’agit de BizTalk Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server et quelques autres. Red Hat a fait le même type d’effort pour JBoss Enterprise sur Hyper-V.
Pour l’instant, Red Hat n’évoque pas le support de Windows Server 2008 avec ses outils d’administration. Il devrait fournir des precisions en fin d’année quand il rendra disponible Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager, ensemble d’outils d’administration pour les postes de travail et les serveurs. Il proposera aussi Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor qui pourra accueillir des instances Windows. Microsoft, lui, supporte Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.x et 5.x sur son System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 mais va devoir procéder à une mise à jour de Virtual Machine Manager pour les instances Red Hat dans Hyper-V.

What should you do when you encounter such a problem is exactly what I am going to say ! I love Kate because it allows me to execute the programs under the same framework. When I installed SUSE 11.1, somehow Kate wasn’t installed. The following is what I did.

Go to the YaST Control Center. Choose Software on the left panel(It is chosen by default). Then open Software Management from the panel in the right and make a search for “Kate”. It shows you whether Kate is installed or not (If there is a tick mark in the checkbox, Kate is installed otherwise not !). Select the appropriate version by selecting the checkboxes and then. Click Accept to continue with the installation.

During the installation, you may need the installtion disk if the packages are not downloaded from the internet. A message will be prompted in case the disk is required. Without any further user intervention, the installtion is done !

Knapp drei Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von Suse Linux Enterprise (SLE) 10 hat Novell jetzt die Server- und Desktop-Variante von Suse Linux Enterprise 11 freigegeben. Neu sind zwei separat erhältliche Erweiterungen: Die Mono Extension bringt eine vollständige .NET-Umgebung auf den Linux-Desktop, die High Availability Extension enthält zusätzliche Software für den Einsatz im Cluster.

SLE 11 setzt auf Kernel 2.6.27 und bringt auch sonst eine aktualisierte Software-Ausstattung mit. Mit dabei sind Openoffice 3, Firefox 3 und die beiden Desktop-Umgebungen Gnome sowie KDE in den halbwegs aktuellen Versionen 2.24 und 4.1.3. Der Hypervisor Xen ist in Version 3.3.1 enthalten. Ext3 ersetzt ReiserFS als Standard-Dateisystem; den Nachfolger Ext4 liefert Novell zwar mit, jedoch ohne offizielle Unterstützung.

Well, this week really wasn’t very special.

I assigned some new IP’s to a couple of machines.
Evaluated quite a few bugs which were all accepted to be fixed.

The most exciting things I did included talking to a very polite American engineer about booking a couple of systems and getting Suse Linux installed on them.
I also looked at the UPS system on one of our production servers. It was complaining about the battery which had failed a test. I’ve changed the battery and I need to make sure it’s still OK.

That’s it really, a very uninteresting week!

SuSE ha publicado una actualización para múltiples paquetes de diversos productos SuSE Linux que corrigen numerosos problemas de seguridad.
De forma resumida, las vulnerabilidades son:

• Se ha corregido un error en el servidor dhcp a través del parámetro ‘dhcp-max-message-size’ que podría ocasionar un desbordamiento de enteros. Esto podría ser aprovechado por un atacante para causar una denegación de servicio.
• Se ha corregido un error en la validación del valor devuelto por la función de ‘EVP_VerifyFinal’ de OpenSSL. Esto podría ser aprovechado por un atacante remoto para evadir restricciones de seguridad a través de certificados de seguridad especialmente manipulados.
• Se ha corregido un error en el servidor squid en los archivos ‘httpmsg.c’ y ‘httpstatusline.c’ a través de una solicitud HTTP con un número de versión no válido que podría ser aprovechada por un atacante remoto para causar una denegación de servicio.

• Se ha corregido un error en enscript en la función ‘recognize_eps_file’ localizada en el fichero ’src/psgen.c’ y en la función ’tilde_subst function’ localizada en el fichero ’src/util.c’ a través de direcciones de nombres especialmente largas que podrían causar un desbordamiento de memoria intermedia. Esto podría ser aprovechado por un atacante remoto para ejecutar código arbitrario.
• Se ha corregido un error en eID-belgium al no chequear correctamente los valores de la función ‘OpenSSL EVP_VerifyFinal’, esto podría permitir a un atacante remoto eludir la validación de certificados SSL/TSL.
• Se ha corregido varios errores en gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good que podría provocar un desbordamiento de memoria intermedia. Esto podría ser aprovechado por un atacante para ejecutar código arbitrario.

No último dia três foi lançado o Songbird 1.0, um player de música personalizável e multiplataforma que tem como base o Mozilla e possui vários serviços integrados bem como diversas possibilidades de expansão através de plugins. Desde a primeira vez que tive contato com o programa fiquei bastante entusiasmado visto que até então não havia encontrando um player para Linux que atendesse o que eu realmente procurava. O Amarok foi por um tempo o meu predileto na época que  usei o SuSe, porém, após optar pelo Ubuntu, resolvi não utilizá-lo mais por não querer misturar bibliotecas do KDE com o GNOME, assim, optei pelo Exaile.

Após a notícia em diversos sites e blogs, resolvi baixar o programinha que tem apenas 28,7 MB para testar. Confesso que desde o primeiro contato até a versão 1.0 fiquei bastante surpreso pois ocorreram algumas mudanças. A que mais me chamou  a atenção foi a possibilidade de personalização do tocador através dos plugins. Isso faz uma grande diferença!

O sistema possui algumas características interessantes como o GStreamer  que é o sistema principal para reprodução de música, disponível em todas as plataformas e permite uma melhor performance e confiabilidade. Ocorreram melhorias também no mashTape. Agora o usuário pode ouvir música,  ver fotos do Flickr, vídeos do YouTube,  ler biografias do last.fm e  ler sobre o artista que esta sendo executado na playist, tudo em uma interface.

Uma grande sacada dos desenvolvedores foi colocar tudo em apenas um pacote, o qual já trás todas as dependências, não sendo necessário nenhum pacote adicional.

Resumindo, o Songbird é sem dúvida uma grande promessa e tem tudo que um usuário apaixonado por música precisa. Melhorias? Sim, faltam algumas a serem implementadas e acredito que no decorrer do amadurecimento do programa elas surgirão conforme o desenvolvimento. O grande barato disso porém é a possibilidade de personalização, coisa que muito outros por aí não possuem. Agora por exemplo, usando o plugin ShoutCast, estou escrevendo este artigo e curtindo  um bom som dos anos 80. Vale apena!

Having been disappointed by Ubuntu 8.10, I moved on to Fedora. Absolute failure. Looked ok, couldn’t set up a network connection. Fro some reason, /bin and /sbin were not in root’s $PATH, so for a moment I was unable to run dhclient and ifconfig. Don’t have a clue why that was. Next, I tried the Red Hat admin GUIs. Why they are GUIs, escapes me. you have to type system-config-x, as there is stupidly system-install-packages and system-control-network, so no tab completion for you. This is exceptionally stupid, as the former is just the program pirut, and the latter is a form of system-config-network. Why there are two escapes me. On the plus side, the graphical installer (anaconda) was good, and the startup display is quite good. It also has a nice gdm setup that does away with usernames (you click on your icon then enter a password).

Next, up, OpenSUSE. This has a very nice version of the old installer, which, on newer hardware, actually runs decently. The installer is very clean with a green and silvery look. On the downside, however, it suffers from the same problems as before. Partitioning is a mess. Surprise surprise, I don’t want to wipe my disc. To get custom partitioning, you have to click on a drop box, then click on partitioning. It’s something most people would want to configure, yet is bundled with useless options in a hard to access location. No warning is given that it is going to format a disk, except for small red text, so noobs could easily just click through and not realise until it is too late that they are going to lose data. That one really should have been addressed by now. Also, even though I am installing from a DVD, it has a funny box that lists the installation media that are in use, along with a total. Looks a bit stupid. The install is extremely slow, compared to others.

Now I start to remember why I dislike Suse. First, it makes you except a EULA. I feel dirty whenever I have to do this. It also makes you accept one for Firefox, something that caused a furore in the Ubuntu crowd.

Next, it comes without nano. This is highly annoying as nano is my primary editor.

Thirdly, it bundles a desktop search called kerry beagle. This may be usefull for some users, but this really should be opt-in, rahter than a difficult opt-out. Somewhere, there should be an explicit option to enable or disable it. It caches the user’s home directory, as well as keeping all of firefox’s web history. Also, even in KDE 3.5, it bundles the stupid ugly menu, which Novell made. Though, it is easy to go back to the getter ‘classic’ menu.

Fourth, it gave me the hostname linux-th98. Whatever the hell that is. I don’t remember a choice. Ubuntu handles this by making the domain username-laptop or somehting, which works fairly well for some.

Fifth, yast blows. Yast2 (graphical) is a pain, and the non graphical one is really difficult to work with (Imagine a UI where instead of having a mouse, you press tab.) I wanted to eliminate the beagle group, but there is no groups settings that I found, other than user 1000. The Gnome settings dialogues are more useful. Flowing from this is that files such as fstab and menu.lst are expected to be edited in a stupid GUI (even though they’re text) and so there is no clean tab format.

So. All in all not too bad, as I can’t find too many things to complain about. Most of these are my personal preference. There are other things that have good defaults, like the screensaver and kdm theme. I’ll hang onto this one for a while if I can figure out how to blast beagle off the face of the Earth.

On the black machine, Suse wins. But generally, I would say that Ubuntu wins thus far for ordinary users. Of cource, Debian is the natural choice for those in the know.

I got an e-mail in work first thing about Google’s new web browser…Google Chrome and my first thought was… “Why Why Why???” Why bother… We have Firefox, and we have Internet Explorer… and we have Safari all perfectly good, mature, major-usage web browsers that meet pretty much everybody’s needs already – and we haven’t even begun to mention the plethora (sheer plethora of other browsers out there) – least to say the browser market is already pretty crowded.

As a web developer who knows the difficulties of developing and supporting across multiple browsers with all their different features and nuances… I did not welcome this announcement at all – just another web browser to slow down development and create more expensive system support – thanks Google!

My second thought on this was… this is just Google being completely self-centred… this development is purely to give them much tighter control over the future direction of Google Gears… and from that angle… fair play to them!

Anyway… went to download this on my Suse Linux box… followed the link from Google’s home page and then got sent around in circles across infomation pages with no Download link…. why?… because Google Chrome Beta isn’t available for Linux… but their web site doesn’t tell you that! Logged onto one of my Windows Vista machines and have downloaded and installed there.

So first impressions…

• Speed – page rendering speed is unbelievable… leaves Microsoft Internet Explorer and even the new speedy Firefox 3 sitting on the starting lines… only comment here is that rendering engine is obviously different enough in places to necessitate substantial additional web developer testing. I logged into my Windows Live / Hotmail account and there were icons displayed on the wrong part of the screen and problems with javascript… all of which currently works OK in both IE and Firefox… not good!
• Very simple looking interface. Nice! The look and feel is, by and far, the cleanest looking browser I’ve ever seen. Looks really cool with Windows Vista transparency behind the tabs at the top… again…. just nice!
• Tabbed web pages… nothing particularly new there… although apparently behind the scenes this is much improved over Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefix – especially around multi-threading and error handling… haven’t been able to test this yet.
• Dynamic Tabs – nothing blindingly innovative here… this is a clear rip-off of Safari functionality. It would seem that Google are taking a leaf out of Microsoft’s rule of thumb on copying cool features from other products instead of coming up with ideas of your own.
• Crash Control – idea being that if one application in one tab crashes, then the whole browser doesn’t mess up – all other applications in other tabs keep working OK. Wasn’t able to get anything to crash on an individual tab page so can’t really comment on this one at the minute. Sounds like a cool feature though. Did manage to get the whole browser to crash and shut down completely though… the address bar is really, really screwy!
• Incognito Mode – essentially private browsing – for times when you want to browse in “stealth mode”. Again a much touted feature of the up-and-coming Internet Explorer 8 this feature has been dubbed “porn mode” for the new generation of browsers.
• Safe Browsing – Google Chrome warns you if you’re about to visit a suspected unsafe web site. Nothing new or innovative there either – all features that are present in all major browsers.
• Instant Bookmarks – Where you just click on the star in the Firefox address bar to add a favourite… er I mean Google Chrome Address bar… I’d be very, very surprised if Firefox doesn’t sue over this blatant copyright infringement… again
• Google Apps – All work blindingly, blindingly fast – with each application opening in a separate tab.
• Google Gears Support – I tested this with my Google Apps -> Google Docs… works amazingly fast! Amazingly fast! Also was able to get my Application shortcuts added OK to desktop, start menu, quicklaunch bar etc no problems. Very, Very impressed.
• Extensions Support like those available for Firefox… seemingly non-existent – although I haven’t investigated fully.
• Comparison to Internet Explorer 8 Beta – think they are going to need to come up with something better. We are really starting to see the Google strategy come together for tight integration between the browser and web-based applications… Microsoft needs to get much much better on its Windows Live Services being integrated together and with their browser moving forward… it would seem that it’s really game on now moving forward with everything to play for – The OS, The Browser, The Applications are all up for grabs…
• Stability – not bad at all. Noticed a few glitchy little delays as I was typing into the address bar… but nothing I’m going to runaway screaming from.

Was a bit dissappointed with the lack of Linux support so far on this Beta… would have thought Google would have had that in there as a minimum in their ever escalating war against Microsoft.

If Google released a free operating system to go alongside and integrate really tightly with their free browser, and their free applications, and their free Android phone, then Microsoft would have a real problem on their hands.

All in all… still a beta… still a bit glitchy – I wouldn’t be rushing to put my credit card details through it just yet! Not hugely innovative in regards to new features that you can see with the naked eye end-user experience – they’ve really ripped off good features of other browsers which, when brought together like this, make it quite compelling. Is clearly oriented towards the usage of Google’s own applications.

The potential of this browser taking a huge chunk of browser market share from Microsoft… given Google’s notoriety, and extensive deployment channels…absolutely huge!

Los paquetes de cyberorg (experimental) para openSUSE Build Service (repos) se han actualizado con el último código de Compiz Fusion git.Los principales cambios son la reestructuración del plugin de animacion, todavía hay algunos mas por retocar, como los choques de Compiz si el addon de animacion està activado,así que por favor no utilizar estos paquetes en sistemas de producción,son sólo para los desarrolladores y con el fin de informar y corregir los errores.

Eliminar:
/$HOME/.config/compiz (rm -rf ~/.config/compiz) antes de correr compiz.

Para evitar accidentes con compiz tras habilitar addons de animación:
