I have been told that best brand-sponsored cultural events are those which do not have logos brandished on leaflets, walls, ceilings and floors, staff badges, USB sticks and toilet doors. And that the more subtle a partnership and the less intrusive a brand on an event, the better. Orange RockCorps destroys that mistaken belief.

Orange RockCorps gets thousands of volunteers across the UK each year to volunteer for 4 hours. For two summers I cleaned pathways and cut down weeds, bushes and trees in Valentine’s Park, Ilford. Joined by a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers, we got out of bed early on a Saturday morning to make the park pretty. And the reward for our hard work? Tickets to an exclusive gig at the Royal Albert Hall with international superstars NaS, Nelly, Kelly Rowland, John Legend, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and artists of British origin such as KANO, Lethal Bizzle, Razorlight all playing under one roof!

Last year Busta Rhymes headed the concert and his performance was unforgettable: the fast-paced rap flows, the passion, the adrenaline – everything came together to make it feel like an earthquake had just struck Albert Hall (in a good way).

Drinks and food at the ‘09 volunteering days were provided by Suso (Suso also promote their products through in-kind sponsorships of local schools and Street Fest ’09) and Golden Wonder. Sony Ericsson were also involved in the project with their photography competition which runs alongside the volunteer work. Participants take photographs and the best, most creative image won a bag-full of goodies. Sony provided the new phones for the budding-photographers thus exposing their product to the target market and crucially getting people to see, hold and use their phones.

This is a cool, fun and intelligent campaign put on by Orange. The volunteering was actually enjoyable, the gig was incredible and the fact that Orange encourage people to continue volunteering after the show demonstrates their commitment to making the world a better place. Their creativity and imagination made the “logo-ful” project seamless, totally unobtrusive (I for one was not put off by the product-placement and 10-foot branded signs) and forgivable (for the sceptics and cynics out there). That’s why Orange is one of my favourite brands making commerce and culture work together.

I entered a competition for Sugar magazine, which is a teen magazine, to make a video to help stop bullying. I was picked as one of three finalists and my video is now live on the Sugar website, and you can vote for your favourite video. OK! So finally the July 1st is here and the hunting season is now open. Its not quite August 18th but still at least there would be something to look at. Not that its not already frenetic as it is with all these talks of who is going to where, but now at least the time from “is linked” to “has signed” is not going to be an eternity.

Good thing for any Liverpool fan is to see that Liverpool and Rafa are already moving in the transfer market. And it looks there is more to come.

“Did we need a right back?” – Yes!
“Is he worth 17 Million?”. – We would know in time!

The thing that we can be sure of though is that in Johnson we have a player who would not need any time to adjust to the Premier League pace. He has a proven Premiership record and is the firm favourite to become the regular right back for the English team. He is a class player! Good going forward. Pacy – which would help stretch those trenched defenses of Stoke City. Even if defensively, he can improve, he would be better served in a team that collectively tracks back and would allow him to assert himself up front.

You should also remember that in a very ordinary Portsmouth team  this season, he was the only bright light of hope, and despite everyone seemingly busy shooting crap, this guy performed well week in and week out.

Arbeloa has been good, but what Arbeloa lacks is that pure instinct of bombing forward and delivering an inch perfect cross into the box. However, it would still be a mistake if Rafa lets him go. Deggen is going is only ever going to see medical facilities in Liverpool, I would be surprised if he ever got to Anfield on his own two feet. He is a piece of glass. So he is never going to even act as a backup. I would think Rafa brought in Johnson, to make sure that there is depth in the department and they do not have to punt Carra to right every time Arbeloa is to be rested. So releasing Arbeloa would be a step back. So the best case scenario would be to get Arbeloa to sign-up for another few years.

But if Rafa does decide to release Arbeloa, we would recoup what we spent on getting him and Darby would be nudged into the main squad and maybe just maybe he would be able to do what Insua did last season.

Youngsters

Another heartening sign is that as Rafa tries to sign players for first team, he is not neglecting the youngsters. Jesus (Suso) Fernandez Saez – a 16 year old rated as a brilliant midfield talent by many (including Barcelona and Real Madrid) has to signed with us. Fending off Real Madrid and Barcelona is proving more and more difficult in English market, in European market? Spain is preferred destination for everyone. Bringing a player away from Spain when he could have gone to Barcelona or Madrid is a pretty gratifying thought.

Hopefully, this season we would see some progress on Spearing, Plessis, Hammill, Darby, Nemeth, et. al. and hopefully they would be given some sort of run-in with the first XI and by that I do not mean taken along for warming the bench.

What Next

I hope there is no truth to any story involving Mascherano and Alonso. Any one of these leaving would leave a big big hole to fill. Tie in both of them for life if you have to.

And I hope we get couple more of great transfers done. David Silva would be ideal and a striker to support Torres or play alone when Torres needs rest. Don’t know maybe Alvaro Negredo. Haven’t seen much of him, but as usual on Youtube he looks like pretty good. But anyway, hope we have enough firepower to take down Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal next season.

Nelle feste e nelle occasioni di aggregazione la tarantella esplode e si organizza nella classica “rota” (cerchio rituale all’interno del quale si muovono i ballerini diretti da un “mastru i ballu”) e si manifesta in una varietà di versioni e di stili legati ad una storia di culture, scambi, insediamenti che hanno agito in maniera diversificata in ogni provincia, in ogni vallata e in ogni villaggio. Hace ya varios meses, a principios de éste año y finales del anterior, estuve realizando mi trabajo de grado con un grupo de jóvenes en una zona inverosímil de la ciudad. La Loma es una vereda del corregimiento de San Cristóbal, encaramada en las montañas que rodean a Medellín por el occidente. Con la timidez normal de quien se enfrenta a un grupo de desconocidos, llegué a trabajar con éste grupo ya conformado de jóvenes cacharreros y apasionados por la tecnología, la información y los movimientos sociales.

ConVerGentes es un grupo sui generis. Dejando a un lado la descripción de lo que con la información hacen, que ya puede encontrarse reiteradamente en la web (como lo hacen Catalina, Deneiber, Carmen o Gabriel), hoy hago referencia al sentido de altruismo y entrega sin igual y admirable que demuestran. La historia de Suso ha sido fiel y románticamente relatada por este grupo juvenil, además de haber sido objeto de conmoción en el universo blogueril mundial gracias a la propagación de dicha historia (como se puede ver aquí, aquí, aquí o aquí). La resumiré, muy escuetamente, para quienes no hayan escuchado antes de “Suso Mugre”.

Este personaje, un anciano reciclador habitante de La Loma, tuvo como padres a los donadores de los terrenos en los que hoy se encuentran el colegio y la Biblioteca Pública Piloto de La Loma, epicentros de la cultura y el conocimiento en este pequeño poblado. Sin embargo su noble ascendencia, Suso se encontraba hasta hace poco sufriendo las inclemencias del tiempo debido a que su casa se estaba, literalmente, cayendo por pedazos.

Hace unos meses los ConVerGentes se apoderaron de ésta causa, y con sancochos, rifas, colectas y demás expresiones fieles de la berraquera y el rebusque paisas, el 6 de febrero de 2007 lograron juntar para la demolición de la casa amenazante, y la planeación de una nueva, más pequeña pero más segura. Esa era una primera fase. El infortunio llegó cuando se dieron cuenta de que un familiar, desconocido hasta el momento, estaba reclamando la pertenencia de los terrenos en los que se planeaba la construcción de la nueva casa de Suso Mugre. Todo parecía irse al suelo.

Sin embargo, éste inconveniente legal pudo ser sorteado. No lo sé. Espero que así haya sido. Ahora los esfuerzos se aúnan en una nueva campaña de recolección para terminar la pequeña casa, todavía en obra negra. Vos podés también poner tu granito de arena. Esto no es ningún correo masivo que pretende conmover al planeta: es un caso que conozco personalmente y en cuyos artífices confío. Como ya se había contado aquí, y a través de Dailymotion, Youtube, Rising Voices, El Oso, Ojo al texto, , y ¿Comunicación? :  El segundo capítulo de la historia de “Suso” se empezó a construir el miércoles 6 de febrero con la demolición de lo poco que quedaba de su vivienda.

A 9 meses de iniciado dicho proceso, podemos afirmar que gracias a la gestión que realizamos, hoy Suso puede contar con una vivienda más digna.

Sin embargo, para que la dicha sea completa, se necesitan algunos recursos que garantizen la culminación total de las obras. (Que hoy se encuentran en obra negra).

Por este motivo, en el marco de nuestras reuniones como proyecto, TODOS decidimos emprender una campaña, para que la comunidad bloguera, se una a esta causa y con su donación nos ayude a cumplir el objetivo de esta campaña Pro Suso que no es otro que finalizar totalmente las obras de construcción.

URBAN EARTH is special.

URBAN EARTH is a simple, straight forward and inclusive idea. Find a city then walk across it. Something that most people can do but choose not. In URBAN EARTH’s case this means stopping and taking a photograph every 8 steps looking forward into the space that is about to be occupied by the camera and never looking at those events, objects, places and animals that the journalist and visitor alike have been conditioned into thinking are ‘interesting’.

I’ve found URBAN EARTH: MUMBAI emotionally challenging. Not so much because of the extreme poverty (though this does trouble me) or the enormous numbers of people and their stunning generosity, but because of the reason I came to be here – as a geographer, a space explore, scientist, artist, adventurer and a human -  to capture and (re)present the city.

URBAN EARTH proposes to (re)present cities by showing what they are really like, away from the bias of the human eye. I’ve found this systematic approach to frequently be painful as the stories people and places are left behind. 

Away from the URBAN EARTH: MUMBAI route we visited a Koli village. Kolis are fishing people and settled here long before Europeans arrived. Slowly but surely over the last few hundred years these people have watch Mumbai creeping forward and advancing towards their village which is positioned 25km North of the city’s historical centre. In living memory Mumbai has swamped this small village with strong traditions bringing the full force of the city’s pollution, people, high rise buildings, diverse cultures as well opportunities. As one local Koli women explained (who had gained an MA in commerce while studying in the city) “we do not mind visitors coming and seeing our culture, but don’t stop us from practicing it in our own way”. Kolis are now connected to global markets both through the prawns that they export around the world and the threat of licenses being sold to foreign boats that fish off their shores all year round, threatening the stocks of fish that used to be sustainable as the fishing people would lay off for three months in the year to allow them to breed.

Other stories are lost too. Of the children who are growing up in informal settlements, some under plastic sheets on the side of roads but other like these two who have cable TV, water and electricity to their homes and will shortly be rehoused in flats.

In this slum (slums occupy less than 10% of Mumbai’s space yet home around 40% of the city’s people) houses are used as outsourced sweatshops where men die-cast jewellery, divide it into pieces and then women then carefully by hand fix glass beads and paints before they are sent off to be sold in India and further away. Ten years ago people living here could hardly afford to eat and now the majority of homes include a TV set with a cable connection.

This morning I fully intended to write my full blog posting on my experiences of walking across Mumbai. While many people like to write things fresh, cities present me with patterns that I can only see with some temporal distance. I knew that Janmashtami was taking place and so thought I’d go and take a look before getting my experiences into this blog.

Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna (the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Over this period many of the city’s people are fasting and praying but the real excitement is over pots that are strung high in the streets, traditionally full of yogurt but now symbolic of a cash prize for those who can create the tallest human towers in an effort to reach it.

I went to see this event unolding in Santa-cruz and take some photo’s and ended up being embedded into a team by Rajan and Vicky two of their ‘leaders’ and travelling around Mumbai by motorbike and truck and photographing the team and their efforts. Their generosity was overwhelming and the festivities amazing: brilliant Indian house music at each of the places we visited, often with crowds of thousands watching as Rajan, Vicky and over a hundred other team members carefully climbed in a determined way towards the pot of money (the winning of which were to be spent within their community).

The experience of travelling for a day and taking part in such a massive event helped to remind and settle me about the importance of URBAN EARTH. URBAN EARTH: MUMBAI does not travel through some of the narrow alleys, or rare fishing village. It does not reach the historical centre of the city and it fails to capture all of the festivals of the city. What all the URBAN EARTH films do is show you a face of the cities in a way that you have never seen before -  an imaginative, creative and determined glimpse - one take, one story, one journey across the cities that offer a greater insight into the daily realities of these places rather than focusing on the attractive event that pull to create stronger memories yet distorting our imagined landscapes.

La último es que ha aparecido uno de sus sobrinos y ahora desea tomar poseción del terreno donde se encuentra su casa… La historia completa: aquí

Suso, literalmente, nos ha puesto a “voltear”…

Ya hace un buen rato que en ConVerGentes se publicó su historia; y desde ese día hasta hoy nos ha puesto a girar entorno suyo…

Primero, fue el día de su cumpleaños 78, en el que algunos de los CVG nos reunimos para obsequiarle un radio en el cual pudiera escuchar música..

Luego fueron las madres comunitarias las que se unieron a nosotros y elaboraron tamales, una comida muy colombiana, para venderlos y recoger fondos para iniciar las obras de construcción de una nueva casa para el.

Con el dinero recogido se hizo una viejoteca; y con el de ésta, se adquirieron algunos materiales que hoy por hoy están transformados en parte de una casa nueva y digna para Suso.

Aunque el proceso ha sido largo, todavía están los ánimos dispuestos para culminarlo y recibir con agrado el día en el que la nueva casa esté totalmente construida y podamos contarles que Suso ya tiene las llaves de una nueva realidad.

La mole imponent de Sant Millan de la Cogolla s’aixeca no gaire lluny de Nájera i Santo Domingo de la Calzada, al mig de la Rioja estricta. En aquest monestir va escriure un monjo desconegut les primeres paraules en basc i castellà, llengües bessones doncs. Si bé el monestir ha canviat molt el seu museu és impressionant. No podeu visitar Sant Millan, (Yuso), sense pujar a veure Suso, el petit cenobi mozàrab que li és antecesor. El seu diminut temple visigòtic és una petita joia. En este monasterio escribió un monje desconocido las primeras palabras en vasco y castellano, lenguas gemelas pues. Si bien el monasterio ha cambiado, su museo aún es impresionante. No podéis visitar Santo Millan, (Yuso), sin subir a ver Suso, el pequeño cenobio mozàrabe que le es antecesor. Su diminuto templo visigòtico es una pequeña joya. Así nos decía Diego Magno, a propósito de salpicón que decidimos vender durante el bazar organizado por la Mesa de Trabajo de “La Loma”, para ayer domingo.

La odisea comenzó el día viernes cuando nos enteramos de que podíamos “prestar” un toldo para participar en el bazar; y continuó con el debate sobre qué vender en éste.

Deisy, Leidy, Yesenia, la otra Catalina y yo, tomamos la decisión de vender salpicón y obleas con el firme objetivo de recoger algunos fondos para las diversas actividades de ConVerGentes; entre ellas, ir a Campus Party.

Pero ahí venía la otra cuestión: ¿Con qué plata compraríamos las frutas y los desechables para hacerlo?

Fuimos donde Claudia Larrea, una de las madres comunitarias del barrio, y ella con todo el gusto nos prestó el dinero: pero me pagan el martes, nos dijo.

Con “plata” en mano el cuento ya era otro, pero no era suficiente porque se necesitaba quien fuera por tanta fruta. El papá de Yesenia nos hizo el favor, y el sábado en la tarde llevó la fruta a la casa de Deisy.

Diego, Yesenia y yo, teníamos compromisos durante la tarde del sábado, así que la “picada” de la fruta tuvo que dejarse para las horas de la noche.

El clima estaba literalmente horrible: llovía durísimo, tronaba, hacía mucho frío; pero de todas formas debíamos cumplir con el deber. A las 7:00pm pasadas empezó la función. Todo era motivo de risa, Yesenia insistía en contar una tal historia de los somalíes, pero no la contaba; la mamá de Deisy se antojó de mango, y pues mi fruta en cuadros era de todo menos eso.

Terminamos a las once, y cada cual se fue para su casa…

A la mañana siguiente, es decir ayer, debíamos terminar de hacer el salpicón, “armar” el toldo, y pues vender, vender, y seguir vendiendo.

Fue una jornada extenuante. La mayoría tuvimos que permanecer de pie desde las 9:00 am hasta ya pasadas las ocho de la noche y el clima no estuvo muy bueno que digamos, así que nos tocó aguantar frío y una que otra llovizna.

Las ventas no estuvieron del todo mal. Las nuestras fueron unas de las más movidas, y pues finalizado el día ya habíamos saldado la deuda (que era lo que más nos preocupaba); y aunque las ganancias no fueron muchas quedaron: cansancio, piernas cansadísimas, una que otra oblea, un tanto de salpicón, y pues la satisfacción del deber cumplido.

Lo único para la lamentar, de tan loca jornada, fue la ausencia de varias personas que tenían conocimiento de lo que pretendíamos realizar y pese a eso no dieron señales de vida durante todo el tiempo que duró el bazar. Una muestra de total indiferencia frente a lo que realizamos, y una actitud que deja mucho que desear.

Pd.  Tuvimos la intención de tomar fotos, pero no conseguimos cámara. Hablé con una de las oganizadoras del bazar y me dijo que me facilitaría algunas. Espero que sea cierto para poder mostrarlas por aquí.

Pd. 2: El animador del bazar promocionó nuestro salpicón diciendo que lo hacíamos en Pro de Suso y él estuvo por allí y también le tocó salpicón pero gratis claro está.
