Two sports broadcasters who cover the terminally awful Los Angeles Clippers basketball team were recently suspended for comments they made about a member of the visiting Memphis Grizzlies team who is from Iran.

I started reading the story and was waiting to find out exactly what offensive thing they had said about Grizzlies’ center Hamed Haddadi. I was expecting to read that they had joked about him being a terrorist or made some derogatory remark about Islam. Imagine my astonishment, then, when I got to the end of the story and found out that what had earned the duo a one-game suspension and the opportunity to profusely apologize to Haddadi (through a translator, since Haddadi speaks little English) was precisely this:

• They mispronounced the word “Iranian.”
• They expressed surprise that any Iranian nationals play in the NBA.
• They jokingly compared Haddadi’s looks to the character “Borat”.
• They complimented Haddadi’s basketball moves.

Seriously? That’s offensive and discriminatory? The only thing that could possibly be offensive is the Borat reference, and that’s pretty much par for the course as far as jokes made at the expense of visiting players. The “Borat” character isn’t Iranian or even Muslim.

Apparently all it took was one person with too much time on their hands who complained to the network to shift the PC police into hyperdrive and send these two announcers into full hand-wringing mode. To his credit, Haddadi, when thoroughly informed as to what had been said about him, didn’t see it as a big deal at all. (In his country, ethnic/religious discrimination generally involves beatings and torture, so you’ll forgive him for his failure to be outraged by a couple of dumb TV comments.) Nor did the Grizzlies organization find the matter worthy of a formal complaint. But hey, it’s Los Angeles, the third most enlightened city in California, so naturally the horse must be beaten to death.

I would have thought this matter would have been eclipsed  by the shocking revelation that somebody actually watches Clippers games on TV all the way until the end, and by the further importance of seeking mental health counseling for that individual rather than taking seriously any complaints from that quarter.

Drug smuggler who swallowed 67 packages of cocaine caught because of his bulging belly

A drug smuggler swallowed 67 packages of cocaine in an attempt to get through British customs. Student Fidelis Ozouli, 30, risked his life trying to hide the 1kg haul of the class A substance in his stomach. He later claimed he did not know the packets contained drugs. Officers at Manchester Airport became suspicious because Ozouli looked unnaturally bloated.  They carried out X-rays on his stomach and discovered a quantity of cocaine equivalent to two bags of sugar. It is one of the largest amounts ever found internally by UK customs officers. The drug, hidden inside scores of condoms, was 78 per cent pure and had a street value of £250,000. Ozouli left officials and a court baffled by claiming: ‘I didn’t know they were drugs.’ He added: ‘I just did not know what they were. I thought I was swallowing something else to take into Britain as a favour for a pal.’ At Manchester Crown Court, Ozouli, who is from Nigeria but lives and studies in London, pleaded guilty to importing class A drugs and was jailed for ten years – but continued to deny knowing what the haul was. Judge Thomas Gilbart QC told him: ‘I do not accept your evidence and do not believe it is credible. ‘The story is fantastical and I don’t believe a word of it. This was a calculated decision on your part to solve your money worries.’ Ozouli, of Kennington, South London, was stopped by UK Border Agency officers on his arrival at Manchester from Switzerland on September 5. He claimed he was on a business trip from Zurich on behalf of a pharmaceuticals company but inquiries revealed he had taken a lengthy and unusual route back to the UK from countries in Africa. He was arrested and the case was passed to customs officers who interviewed him. Later he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was X-rayed to ensure all the packages had been recovered.

Mike O’Grady, assistant director of criminal investigation for Revenue and Customs said yesterday: ‘Forensic tests showed that the purity of this cocaine is significantly above what we would normally find. ‘Swallowing any drugs puts the courier at risk, but with purity levels this high he was putting himself at considerable risk of death. ‘Criminals dealing in drugs with high purity levels are thinking solely of increased profits, to further fund their illegal activity.

Mr O’Grady added: ‘They show utter disregard for the damage drugs do to individuals and communities. ‘Customs is working closely with our partners in the UK Border Agency, police and other law enforcement agencies such as the Serious Organised Crime Agency to protect the public from the significant and damaging effect drugs have on our communities.’ The biggest ever recorded haul of cocaine found in a smuggler’s stomach in Britain was 1.5kg found inside 39 packages in 2003.

The money will be split equally between the finder Terry Herbert and the landowner Fred Johnson, the museum said.The two men and the two museums which hope to acquire the hoard, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, have all approved the valuation, a spokesman added.Professor Norman Palmer, chairman of the Government-appointed committee, said: “The task of valuing this hoard required the Treasure Valuation Committee to analyse a very large amount of information in order to arrive at a fair market price and I am personally indebted to my fellow members whose energy and expertise made this result possible in so short a time.”He added: “All finders of treasure can take encouragement that the most valuable treasure find ever made was dealt with so speedily and yet so scrupulously by all parties concerned, given that the hoard was discovered only in July.”It is of course immensely important that this extraordinary hoard is acquired for public benefit and I know that the two museums are anxious to raise the funding to keep the hoard in the West Midlands as soon as they can.”

A fundraising campaign is being launched to help the two museums buy the hoard, highlights of which are currently on display at the British Museum in London.British Museum Press has published a book about the find, called The Staffordshire Hoard, and £1 from every sale is going to the appeal fund.A selection of objects from the hoard will also go on display at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery from February 13 to March 7 next year.Mr Herbert, 55, from Burntwood, Staffs, a jobless council tenant on disability benefit, discovered the hoard while searching the field near the M6 toll road between Lichfield and Tamworth on July 5 using his 14 year old metal detector.He has described unearthing the treasure as “more fun than winning the lottery” and said he hopes to buy a bungalow with some of his windfall.Mr Johnson, 65, described the valuation as a “fair and reasonable figure”.He said: “The public have to raise that money and I don’t think we could have expected anything more.”The haul of over one thousand items – most of it gold and silver and thought to date back to between 675 and 725AD – has been hailed as a hugely important find.Experts believe it was buried at the site by its owners at a time of danger and then never recovered.

Ten students at North Naples Middle School were sent home for a day after a girl told the head teacher that she believed she had been kicked for being Jewish, prompting further instances to come to light. Florida passed strict anti-bullying laws last year and schools that do not do enough to stop it risk losing their state funding. Margaret Jackson, the school’s head teacher, has responded to the kicking incident by setting aside the first 20 minutes of each day to teaching students – aged 12 to 15 – about kindness, respect and ways of preventing bullying. David Barkey of the Florida Anti-Defamation League said the organisation had been consulted over the incident. “You are talking about an incident that has anti-Jewish bias if not anti-semitism. You have Jewish students being singled out, harassed and assaulted,” he said. Last year, four pupils were suspended from a middle school in St Louis over a “Hit a Jew Day” in which one Jewish student was slapped in the face. The “day” had been the culmination of a “Spirit Week” organised by pupils which included “Hug a Friend Day” and “Hit a Tall Person Day”.Some believe the idea for such behaviour originally came from the satirical cartoon show South Park which featured a “Kick a Ginger Day” in an episode.

The man, Le Van, told the website that after his wife died in 2003 he slept on top of her grave, but about 20 months later he worried about rain, wind and cold, so he decided to dig a tunnel into the grave “to sleep with her”. His children found out, though, and prevented him from going to the grave. So one night in November 2004 he dug up his wife’s remains and took them home, Vietnamnet reported. For these muscular 16ft whales can get agitated if subjected to unwanted contact and aggressively defend themselves.Thankfully, this magnificent individual was only too happy to let Miss Petrik gently cling on to him and took her for a spin through the deep.The incredible pictures were shot beneath the pack ice in Russia’s White Sea, where a pod of the magnificent Belugas are being studied for a conservation programme.Miss Petrik is an expert free diver and is able to hold her breath for minutes at a time. This avoids the need to use bulky scuba tanks, which release bubbles that can disorientate the whales.

The lack of kit also gives her more freedom to move and synchronise her movements with the whale. The only downside is that free diving in icy cold water takes a heavy toll on the diver’s respiratory system.Julia Petrik had to saw through more than a foot of solid ice just to reach the freezing water below and wears a thick rubber suit to guard against the extreme conditions.Beluga whales – the name is Russian for ‘the white one’ – can survive here because they are able to use their powerful bulk to butt through the ice to breathe oxygen, before submerging once again into the abyss.Their domed foreheads contain a waxy substance, thought to be involved in their ability to communicate.They ‘chatter’ by whistling to each other – so much so that sailors and fishermen call them the ’sea canaries’.Divers can spend weeks searching for Belugas in the wild, but some of the whales are being kept in a large netted enclosure to be studied. Due to its high salinity, the water here freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water and can drop to a bone-chilling minus 2c. But Julia Petrik, given the ride of her life by this giant of the deep, soon forgot about the cold and was having a whale of time.

TV presenter Kim took offence at being voted to do yet another and said: ‘You are very mean, it’s my fourth one – it’s a test of my mettle.’

The first drink was Castlemaine Four Legs, a combination of pulped cockroaches and mealworms with a couple of live cockroaches as a garnish.The pair toasted each other and attempted to drink the vile mixture. But while retired boxer Joe seemed to have no trouble downing the drinks, and even seemed to like them, Kim stuggled.The second round was ‘Foreskin and Tonic’.Host Ant McPartlin told them: ‘This is pulped crocodile foreskin, garnished with a crocodile penis stirrer, once again each one is worth one star. You only have to drink the drink.’

Joe swiftly drank his, but it took Kim several goes. She branded it ‘vile’ while Joe said it merely tasted like washing-up liquid and then pretended to use the penis stirrers as fangs.’You have to pull yourself together. Gino and Sabrina also completed an overnight challenge to win a celebrity chest for the group.They had to trek through the jungle, walk along a tightrope across a ravine and then stay awake all night in order to win treats for camp.They were given sausages and beer for the evening and spent the time staying awake in shifts, trying to prevent the hands of a clock ticking for more than 30 minutes.Inside the chest were tins of food for the camp, including a can of Spam which Gino cooked up.

Justin said: ‘Who knew that a staple tin of spam could send the entire camp into such rhapsodies.’Meanwhile George Hamilton has been regaling the campmates with tales of his famous friends such as Frank Sinatra, Anthony Hopkins, former lover Sharon Stone, Marilyn Monroe and even Puff Daddy.He said: ‘Elizabeth Taylor, we went out together, we worked together.  Elizabeth is an extraordinary human being and she’s an amazing friend.’And he added: ‘[David] Niven said one of the best things about Errol Flynn ever.  He said you can always count on Errol Flynn to let you down.’

Jimmy White asked George about Marilyn Monroe. He said:  ‘You went on a date with her didn’t you George?’George said: ‘Yeah, she was forever getting ready.  She’d come out and she’d say does my hair look… and she’d go back fiddle with the hair some more.’He told Sabrina that he was a friend of Puff Daddy. What would you think if your child got suspended from school because of what you brought them for lunch?

Parents of Reidsville Middle School students had to deal with that last week, according to WHGP-TV.

When Charles Finney brought his daughter Brittney a hamburger from McDonald’s, the school sent a letter home warning against it. The next day, when he did it again, she was suspended for three days.

The same day, Destiny Mullins was given an in-school suspension and made to work as a school janitor after her mother brought her lunch from Wendy’s. That was the first…and last time the mother said she would bring fast food.

While Destiny returned to school Tuesday, Destiny said her suspension would be changed to two excused absences and will return with a clean slate.

While both parents brought their children’s lunch to them in a plain, brown bag, they view the situation differently.

Kanita Mullins, Destiny’s mother, said that she would heed the school’s wishes in the future. “I hope they would change something in the rule book,” she said. “If they don’t want the parents bringing food, they need to address it.”

Finney said he was told by the principal that “school policy does not allow outside food because it competes with child nutrition standards.”

“They can’t tell you what to feed your child,” Finney said. “It ain’t no contest. As long as you feed your child, what’s the point?”

Bravo Mr. Finney. You obviously don’t like your parental rights being trampled on by the state. Unlike Ms. Mullins who is just rolling over to the overzealous indoctrination center, not wanting to make waves.

I’m not opposed to children eating a healthy, balanced meal, but a parent should be able to choose what they give their child to eat if not provided by the school. Plus, the student’s should not be punished for what the parents provide.

As we’ve pointed out before on this blog, for being “public” institutions schools have one of the worst records when it comes to individual liberty, both on and off campus…where the should have no jusidiction whatsoever.

Again, I’d like to paraphrase Beaufort County Commissioner Hood Richardson: How do we teach students about their rights when they’re not allowed to use them?

Meep what? Meep!

Do you like Disney’s roadrunner or the lab assistant from the Muppet Show, Beaker? You love to imitate their sounds and/or words? You go to Danvers High School in Massachusetts? Then you’re in trouble, my friend.

Apparently, some students keep saying “meep” around campus (and allegedly disturb class by doing so) at Danvers High School causing the principal, Thomas Murray, to ban the word. He also gave parents an automated call telling them that if their kids are caught uttering the word as a form of disrespect they might get suspended… what? SUSPENDED? Suspended! And who decides if a word is uttered out of disrespect, protest or other reasons?

But don’t think this is enough. Another blogger, Theodora Michaels, wrote an e-mail to all three principals. Both the subject and the body of the e-mail read “meep”. The response will surprise you: “Your E-mail has been forwarded to the Danvers Police Department.” What was her response in her blog? “We can be charged with . . . what, first degree meeping? Yeah, good luck with that.” I love Americans. You don’t have to ridicule them, no, they ridicule themselves. Yes, the school might see this as spamming or an offense to their rules. I call it protest. I followed in her footsteps, but made my e-mail to all three principals a bit longer:

“Dear Principals,

I just read a funny news story about your high school and also how you forwarded an e-mail that consisted of the word “meep” to your police department. What will the charges be? First degree of meeping? Have you ever heard of freedom of speech? If students want to disturb the course of teaching they often have reasons to do so. Maybe you should search for these reasons first (very basic principle of pedagogy, which is taught here: if something goes wrong always search for your own faults first). If they want to they can also change the word or even actions they do.

How happy I am to be a German and to live in Germany and to be educated to become a teacher here. Americans can be so “meep”.

In that sense:

I mean, come on. Ban a word that has absolutely no meaning? And it does not matter what word you use to disturb class. Words can be changed quickly or actions can be changed. A comment on this story says that children might as well drop all their books at 11:45. That will do the trick, too. Murray also said that his intentions of this ban are to show parents how students use social networks: to disturb class. Like students haven’t ever played pranks at school ever in history?! Yeah, right. Read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I doubt that no child ever attempted to copy Tom’s actions afterwards. The difference was that pranks were organized mouth-to-mouth. Today social networks do the job. But is banning really the right thing to do? What will you do if all the students meep the helk out of you one day? Suspend the entire school? Yes, your reputation will soar because of an entire suspended student body, of course… What world are you living in?

Whoopsie daisy, Tennessee state trooper Brent Gobbell got his sorry white assed suspended after he accidentally sent a “white pride’ email to 787 state employees.Geez Brent! Evidently Gobbell was sending the email to himself so he could make a copy when he must have inadvertently forwarded it to everyone on the computer emailing list. Damn technology, damn it to hell. The email in part read “You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member … you call him a racist.” It concluded with “BE PROUD TO BE WHITE!”

Jeff Jordan is Michael Jordan's son and was recently suspended

Michael Jordan’s oldest son, Jeff Jordan, decided he no longer wanted to play basketball for the Illinois Illini last year. OK, this was simple: Jeff Jordan’s entire life had revolved around basketball, and it’s clear he wasn’t going to obtain (and certainly didn’t need) a professional basketball career. So, he decided to stop playing hoops and focus on school, which I think is a smart thing to do. This fall, Jordan changed his mind and he decided to rejoin the Illini who welcomed him back with open arms.

The thing is, that while not playing pro ball for the Illini, Jeff played in a three-on-three tournament, a non-NCAA-sanctioned event – and for this he has been suspended for 2 games. What bullshit is this?!?!

Now in the end it doesn’t matter because he did not break any rules or moral code – also, it is not like he is a star player or even much of a contributing one for the Illini.

So why do it – that is what rules are for, right….

Don’t you hate modern technology. Elizabeth Lambert has had to make umpteen apologizes, to just about everyone, after she was caught on video being a bitch. Yes, the footballer and Occupational Therapy student who plays played for University of New Mexico was suspended indefinitely after her on field behavior was captured on video. But look on the bright side you’re a friggin hit on Youtube!

Remember the bus driver who was suspended for texting messages to his Facebook page while driving? Well, he’s back…hmm well sort of briefly. Jeremy Philhower’s first day back didn’t go so well, he hit and killed a pedestrian on Ninth Ave, New York. In a sad twist Seth Kahn would have been alive today had the arbitrator fired him (like the agency wanted) instead of sending him to driver safety and customer service training courses.

Psst Mr Philhower had been dissing his passengers on the text messages he was sending to his Facebook.

Bigotry….goddamn bigotry is responsible for this sort of crap. What a load of garbage.

If you haven’t already guessed, I came across the suspension of a Southwestern high school teacher who’s been suspended for showing his students an article about documented homosexual behavior in animals. (Considering the family dog has a tendency to hump anything within a mile radius, you’d think this would be old news. Well, the article is 3 years old so I guess it is old.) I know it’s been over a week but I haven’t seen any news about anything more recent. Thankfully the students are showing their support and he’s getting paid during the suspension.

It’s not like he went to a propaganda website or magazine and made them read something controversial and unproven. It was Seed, a science and culture magazine which they might already have read. It’s really ridiculous that they could even be discussing discipline. At first I was confused about why an English teacher would bring this up, but it turns out he was doing a unit on critical reading for which he used a piece of non-fiction. You would think that this is an extremely good exercise for students who are dogmatically opposed to homosexuality because they could learn to evaluate an scientific article, but nooooo, it’s too dangerous for their young minds and the teacher became too much of a liability for the spineless administrators to handle. More like ADMINISTRAITORS because they betrayed the trust put forth by the community to provide a comprehensive and factual education to these kids, and instead they bent over forwards and backwards so as not to anger the wing nuts who object to critical thinking.

When did women’s college soccer become the UFC?

New Mexico’s defender junior Elizabeth Lambert seemed to think she was in the octagon, instead of the soccer field during her team’s game against top seeded BYU in the Mountain West Conference semifinals.

Lambert can be seen during the game kicking, tackling, throwing elbows, and even yanking BYU forward Kassidy Shumway to the dirt by her hair.

Surprisingly, Lambert was not removed from the game. She went on to finish with her team, who lost 1-0, with only a yellow card for tripping a player.

Luckily, none of the BYU girls were seriously injured by her unsportsmanlike tactics.

Following the game, New Mexico coach Kit Vela announced that Lambert has been suspended indefinitely. Lambert got the deserved punishment of not taking part in practices, games and conditioning.

Lambert has since apologized saying, “I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary. This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am. I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them.”

Origin of EvilB

When you instal windows on a pc, it always asks you to give your computer a name. I always called by computer ‘EVILBRAIN’ because it was a cold calculating machine…so products of the ‘EVILBRAIN’ became – ‘evilbrainproductions’.
So when I first joined youtube back in 2006 i chose the name evilbrainproductions, I was a gamer, obsessed with playing Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam online multiplaying games, uploading videos on to www.youtube.com/evilbrainproductions of me and my ‘REDUX CLAN‘ mates.

Back then I was known as ‘Cream-Dream REDUX’ and I was joint leader of the REDUX CLAN.
This was the first video I ever edited and the first to go up on my suspended youtube channel ‘evilbrainproductions’:

Then after a year or so in 2007  I started uploading videos of myself experimenting with special effects, of me playing guitar, vlogging and responding to the online community and making friends on youtube. So on 29 February 2008 I created another youtube channel to seperate my gaming videos, from my music and special effects videos by creating a channel dedicated to the clan: youtube.com/reduxclan

At some point, responding to the youtube community as ‘evilbrainproductions’, someone in the comments section of an AngryAussie video called me ‘EvilB’ and it kinda stuck…I liked it ;[)

So I started getting more into youtube, as it’s a perfect creative outlet for combining music, poetry, comedy and video editing all in one like this:

Three months ago I was suspended from youtube after i was false flagged by religious nutjobs.
I tried to get my channel back, but to no avail…
So on 31 July 2009 I started again, with my new channel EvilBproductions … so far so good…

Phantoms’ Stephenson suspendedNovember 3, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League today announced that Adirondack Phantoms defenseman Logan Stephenson has been suspended for one (1) game as a result of his actions in a game vs. Syracuse on Nov. 1.

Stephenson was assessed an instigator penalty within the final five minutes of the third period, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension under AHL Rule 47.21.

Stephenson will miss Adirondack’s game on Wednesday (Nov. 4) at Bridgeport.

i think these 3d mobile-like creations are absolutely stunning pieces of work. there is nothing i would like more than to lay down underneath these things! it creates a brilliant illusion of suspended animation, and each little meticulous detail just makes the whole thing much fuller and richer, and all the more delicate

2) Dirk Rees

i just totally love the way this guy captures movement in his images, and how the one image can be so powerful. i particularly like the image of the man in the glass box, and his scarf smashing through. i love the idea of something that is known to give comfort and warmth being turned into somethign razor sharp and powerful, almost snake-like, a deadly cobra lashing out at the constraints it has had placed against it.
i feel another photoshoot coming on here….

A police officer who once confronted Sen. John McCain about marijuana decriminalization is being silenced and possibly pushed out of his job with a New Hampshire police force for speaking out against marijuana prohibition, his supporters say.

Bradley Jardis, an officer with the Epping Police Department, is challenging a six-day suspension he received after reportedly getting into a heated argument with a supervisor. According to blogger David Bratzer, Jardis received the suspension after refusing an “illegal” request from his bosses to refrain from speaking to the media.

Jardis is an outspoken critic of marijuana prohibition and a supporter of medical marijuana laws, as well as a member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, pro-legalization group. Jardis was featured earlier this year in an article in the Manchester, New Hampshire, Union-Leader profiling police officers who object to the drug laws they enforce.

Jardis also penned an op-ed in April for the Union-Leader in which he spoke in favor of a proposed medical marijuana law for New Hampshire. Sometime after those two articles appeared, Jardis began to experience pressure from his employers.

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson really needs to choose his words wisely.  He had some choice words for one of his coaches and they were homosexual slurs that didn’t sit well with the coaches so he has been suspended from the team until November 7.  Now this is a well deserved punishment, but has he not learned his lesson yet?  He has been accused of so many crimes but still continues to maintain this terrible behavior.  After a while it just gets old Larry.  Just step up, be a man and just do what you get paid to do.  In this case, you really need some help right now because your team is suffering and fantasy owners are not happy with you either….including me.  So get your act together and make the rest of the country happy by just running the football and staying out of trouble!
