Another day, another morning of self talk and motivation to get moving. No matter what your fitness level, what you’re training for, getting that initial kick in the pants to get moving in the morning is sometimes something everyone struggles with. Sure, there are some mornings when we all jump out of bed and don’t have time to initially think about what we are about to put our bodies through because we are so crunched for time we automatically go through the motions that lead us to our starting point. However, other mornings are a bit more of a challenge. The mornings when you gracefully get out of bed, don’t necessarily have a starting time established but know that you have all day to get your workout in. The hardest part sometimes is mustering up the motivation, mental power and physical preparation that you know is needed for your upcoming workout. I have found that the motivation part is hardest when there is a lack of variety in your training programs.
If you’re doing the same rides or resistance training workouts your mind is bound to get bored, your body is going to become stagnate in seeing results and the mental and physical gratification tends to get less and less. Granted, there is only so much effective variety when you have specific training goals in mind. There are certain unavoidable things that must happen, such as particular duration, mode of workout and desired intensity and goals. Yet, there is always variety that can be created within each area to help keep your mental and physical state fresh and motivated. If you’re going out for a training ride and you have been defaulting to the same trail at the same time everyday only to feel the same results and see the same scenery, switch it up. Sounds easy but sometimes we fear the unknown of a new path, route or trail, but ultimately the newness will create an unknown sensory excitement for both your body and mind by introducing fresh new obstacles to your ride or workout. If you just don’t have the time to research another ride, then go ahead and default to your go to ride but mix it up. Go a different direction, create a new playlist on your iPod, alter your pace and intensity or ride with a friend. Ultimately, if you do the same thing everyday you will become less and less motivated, results will become stagnate and your passion and drive will decrease. Motivation is something that we all have to generate from within, but variety is key to avoiding boredom on rides. The same can be said for TRX workouts and free weights. Do not become a victim of doing the same workout and exercises with the same weights. As human beings, our bodies crave variety and change. However, we are also creatures of habit and sometime that is our biggest fault, not seeking out variety when our bodies want change our minds simply go to what we know and what we are comfortable doing.

If you’re having one of those days where the motivation did not follow you out of bed, then take a moment and evaluate what you’re currently doing that is boring you and then ask yourself what can I do to make my workouts more fun, challenging and more motivating. After doing this, get up, get out and get moving to a different beat. Chances are the motivation will resurface.

TRX is functional training at it’s best. I have been in the fitness industry for many years as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor and I have seen all the fitness gadgets that are supposed to get you fit faster and more efficiently than the next. The truth is 90 percent, in my opinion, fail to live up to the hype. From bars that bend to balls of various different shapes, to things that shake and just look plain silly, most gadgets are just not effective.

TRX is different. It is not just another gadget, it’s a simple piece of functional training equipment that will actually take your workouts to the next level. Upon first glance it looks like a strap, but take a closer look and you will realize its actually one of the most efficient pieces of functional training equipment to hit the market in years. It’s light weight, easy to carry around, it’s simple to use and it allows users to participate in a variety of functional exercises that focus on core strength, agility and balance.

It’s like having a full gym in the palm of your hands, while never having to leave one small designated area. The TRX caught my attention as a trainer because it’s a piece of equipment that everyone, despite age, ability and fitness background can get a great workout on. It allows for muscular strength exercises by simply changing your bodies angle, it increases the range of motion by challenging participants to move in various planes of motion, it also increases core stability by always making users aware of their core and how it’s affecting each exercise they are doing. TRX may just look like another gadget, but ultimately it’s the most simple yet effective fitness tool I have ever used.

No matter what your fitness goals, the TRX is ideal for anyone wanting to get a great full body workout without the instability of free weights or the uncomfortable fit of fixed machines in the gym. The TRX is ideal for everyone and that is why we have incorporated TRX training at our studio, Epic Ryde. We found that it is the perfect complement to cycling classes. It allows our members to get the additional strength training they need in combination with their cardiovascular training on the RealRyder bikes.
