The exhibition ‚Suspicious Minds’ puts its focus on men that lead in reality – apart from their function – a life in the periphery. Viktoria Binschtok deals with the amassed depictions of state receptions, public announcements and speeches. When one takes a close look on the press pictures of the mighty of this world, one can actually discover a remarkable parallelism: there is at least one man behind every politician that guards him or her. Especially in times of constant terror threat and enforced security control, this is a more and more common picture. These poker-faced, well-dressed men act inconspicuously in the back. It is striking how much they resemble each other in their attempt to disclose the putative mistake in the system. They are encircled by an aura of absence and at the same time most possible tension and concentration. Their facial expression seems totally indifferent and hence enforces the focus on their stereotypical gestures and postures.

11 Judas Priest tunes appeared in my feed yesterday, including Electric Eye, the most versions of any band at any time – the former being AC/DC and Judas Priest with 9 each and that musical taste along with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Anvil, etc. belongs to The One who I intend to marry if i ever see her again. And we shall have a varied life.

Today marks the 32nd anniversary of Elvis’s leaving the building, so to speak. Celebrations and Elvis-themed events took place all week, at Graceland and around Memphis. Last year, when I visited the Land of Elvis, I was very impressed and the fond memories of my trip remain. While I really liked Graceland as a house, especially the outside architecture and how time stood still with all the 70’s stylish (read: tacky) decor, the thing that impressed me most was the Trophy Room at the back of the house. It was more than a room, as it had cases and cases of his outfits, many of his gold records on the wall, posters from his films, video monitors with concert footage, and much more Elvis memorabilia. Visitors walk around with small hand-held monitors and headphones to guide them through every step of Graceland. It’s a testament to the vast catalog of Elvis music, his extensive film work, and the unmeasurable influence he had on music and culture. Long live the King!

Below, is a short film about the Graceland Trophy Room, where Elvis’s jumpsuits and gold records are on display.

I saw gold records of some of Elvis greatest hits close up, and here are just a few of those songs.

It’s Now or Never

Don’t Be Cruel

In the Ghetto

All Shook Up

At the Rock & Soul Museum in Memphis, there was more Elvis memorabilia on display, including one of his guitars and, encased in plastic, the organ on which Suspicious Minds was composed. Below, pictures I took with my cell phone. Of course, visitors are instructed not to touch anything, but I could not refrain from leaning over and touching the organ for a quick second. Plus, my friend and I were the only people at the museum at the time, so I knew I probably wouldn’t get busted.

And here is Elvis performing Suspicious MInds.

His final live performance was in Indianapolis at the Market Square Arena. He had been struggling with his performances for a while, and many people thought he’d lost it. But his final performance was supposedly a strong one, and he showed signs of being able to get better. He was scheduled to go on tour again that summer on August 18, but he was found dead in the bathroom on August 17.

LISTEN to one of Elvis’ best remembered hits, and one of his best songs ever, “Suspicious Minds”:

This is just the most waited release of the year! Miss Kittin and The Hacker are definitely good producers and blah blah blah, but when they come together, they’re unstoppable! The unclassifiable vocals of Mademoiselle Hervé mixed up with some terrific electro based beats of The Hacker… what did you expect?

To me, the #2 best release of the year [after Rules, by The Whitest Boy Alive].

P.S.: To Elvis Presley’s fans: the electronic cover of Suspicious Minds is a masterpiece.

_______________________________________________________________

Elvis Presley – Suspicious Minds – Live 1970

“All Shook Up” de Elvis Presley.. Isso mesmo, o tiozão lá de cima… Eu sabia que nós éramos ligados…

Bom, por hoje falei demais. Tenho mil coisas a fazer, ensaios, gravações e etc. Logo mais posto sobre a minha banda aqui… Senão vão dizer que estou “puxando sardinha”..

Abraços e sintam-se em casa…

Muito sucesso a Nós!!!

SUSPICIOUS MINDS

Elvis’s preternatural control of his band deserves comment. His gestures are very precise and specific; through them, a song which starts very fast nonetheless manages to build and keep building.

The central idea of the song is also remarkable. Elvis suggests that suspicion functions like an cage. “Caught in a trap,” he begins. “I can’t break out. Because I love you too much, baby.” The claim is that love and suspicion – or jealously – exist in some kind of relationship.

The vanishing mediator here is desire. “Why do I still see suspicion in your eyes?” Desire is invested in a person, a relationship, and that thing becomes, through this investment, an object. It becomes a property; carried by the other person, but nonetheless yours, and thus subject to certainty. You know what it is, like you know your own self.

Lovers sometimes are moved to discuss relationships as if they were circumspect things which existed outside of them. “What is the status of our relationship,” the anxious girlfriend asks her annoyed boyfriend. But isn’t it always already out in the open?

Lacan’s famous maxim that “there is no such thing as as sexual relationship” refers partly to this kind of speech. Where a relationship begins and ends is not a question susceptible to abstract solution. There is no neutral space – here – to abstract in. The discussion of a relationship is a discussion embarked on inside a relationship. It is part of the relationship, as much as any part.

You can sometimes find yourself in relationship that seem to be entirely based on discussing… the relationship. This discussion, because involved with itself, is interminable. Here is perhaps where suspicion comes in. You begin to believe that the other is being obtuse, in their misunderstanding, and are moved accordingly to fabricate explanations. In order to do this, are you drawn to hypothesize, beyond the real limits of the letters you have. “Because I love you too much, baby.”

Elvis supplies, through his own talent, a solution against this impasse. The precision of his gestures, casual though they are, corresponds to a ethics of literalism; one that resists trying to peek behind what is on the surface. “Why can’t you see? What you’re doing to me? When you don’t believe a word I’m saying.” It is all channelled outwards, condensed into gestures. Though means like these, a song builds in intensity. Through similar means, a relationship also may. Observe very closely, this demands your attention. This is not an ethics which applies only to lovers.

Being inspired by a Glenn Beck show transcript, which I will get to later, I thought tonite’s Rockabilly After Midnite should be Suspicious Minds. The elections are over, things didn’t go well for Republicans, we all need to move on. I believe the majority of conservative minded Republicans are doing this, in the outlook of the future of the country.

Were caught in a trap
I cant walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why cant you see
What youre doing to me
When you dont believe a word I say?

We cant go on together
With suspicious minds
And we cant build our dreams
On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where Ive been
You cant see these tears are real
Im crying

We cant go on together
With suspicious minds
And be cant build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Lets dont let a good thing die

When honey, you know
Ive never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah

I haven’t laughed so hard reading a novel in a long time! Suspicious Minds, by Christy Barritt

I haven’t laughed so hard reading a novel in a long time! Suspicious Minds, by Christy Barritt, is the laugh-out-loud hilarious story of crime scene cleaner and crime-scene-investigator-wannabe Gabby St. Claire (yes, a crime scene cleaner, as in the person that tidies up after the cops leave.) The story begins with Claire on the first day of a mold-remediation job where…

…she uncovers a surprise in a crawl space of a dilapidated home: Elvis, dead as a doornail and still wearing his blue suede shoes. How could she possibly keep her nose out of a case like this?

Elvis turns out to be Darnell Evans, a down-on-his-luck impersonator whose luck just got a lot worse. When his widow begs her to help, Gabby takes on the case of who-killed-the-King. In the meantime, her would-be rival, Chad Davis, is turning into one hunka hunka burnin’ love and starting to dish out some serious TLC, which is the last thing Gabby needs right now.

Realizing the futility of running from God and from her responsibilities, Gabby decides to reconsider her priorities. But when the ersatz Elvis’s killer catches on to her investigation, will she survive long enough to be able to?

Suspicious Minds was a refreshing change of pace from some of the novels I’ve read recently. Not that the previous ones weren’t good too, but Christy Barritt has a unique writing style (and a sense of humor that was right up my alley!) that was very enjoyable to read. I’d highly recommend this book!
