Geneva, 20 November 2009. Particle beams are once again circulating in the worlds most powerful particle accelerator, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This news comes after the machine was handed over for operation on Wednesday morning. A clockwise circulating beam was established at ten o’clock this evening. This is an important milestone on the road towards first physics at the LHC, expected in 2010.

Calças que desafiam a gravidade

Quando non c’era X Factor, il mondo non ne soffriva la mancanza. C’era Maria de Filippi e i suoi Amici che fra loro non erano così “amici”, ancor prima c’era Popstar che mandava a Sanremo le sue Lollipop che sembravano delle gigantesche Bratz. Insomma, non ce ne siamo mai fatti mancare.

Ma quando in televisione si faceva pedagogia e Mina e la Carrà facevano i migliori programmi della tv, la ragazza della foto in alto, spopolava in Sardegna con il suo gruppo rock. Le Eumenidi, prima cover band femminile. Si chiamava Lola e cantava i maggiori successi del tempo.

Questa ragazza aveva sedici anni nel 1969 e cantava con grande spensieratezza e poco le importava della fama e del successo. Era un periodo di differenti valori morali e sociali quello degli anni ‘60 e ‘70, e lei due anni dopo si diplomava Capitano di Lungo Corso all’Istituto Tecnico Nautico Buccari di Cagliari, nel 1976 si sposava con un ragazzo affascinante dagli occhi verde acqua, dieci anni dopo era madre, ancora nel 1980 e nel 1982, alla terza gravidanza, rinuncia alla Laurea in Medicina per fare la madre. Nel frattempo coltiva mille interessi: le tradizioni popolari prima di tutto, impara a ricostruire e restaurare i costumi antichi del popolo sardo da una prozia del marito (proprio in suo onore chiama la primogenita Laura). Diventa anche attrice prima amatoriale, poi interprete professionista caratterista di numerosi spettacoli della Compagnia Teatro Studio di Cagliari. Si, mia madre tracciava la sua e anche la mia strada indirettamente.

E se avesse seguito i passi (anzi i letti) di una cantante sua concittadina che ora si dichiara piacentina e che recentemente ha fatto un reality show? Non canterebbe più neanche lei forse, ma avrebbe la faccia al botulino e farebbe mille programmi spazzatura in tv. Forse.

Certo che se l’è goduta, Lola.

Oggi grazie a Facebook (e a mia sorella che glie lo gestisce) incontra una compagnia di band e ricordano insieme le serate in concerto e le prime uscite con quei due ragazzi che ancora oggi sono i loro mariti e i padri dei loro figli. Altri tempi.

Mia madre poteva essere una ex Britney Spears con tanti soldi, tanti ex mariti, tanto silicone e tanta cellulite, invece è una ex rocker che non si è mai neanche fumata una sigaretta nella sua vita.

Meglio così.

Lettere overskyet vær. En lang søvn bak meg, og en deilig dormestund i senga før jeg sto opp, en god natts søvn som var forfriskende gjorde meg opplagt da jeg sto opp. Jeg trente på ergometersykkelen og så på mtv. Det ble etterpå tid for en kombinert gå/joggetur i skogen. Jeg kjente ekstra energi i oppover bakkene og var motivert. Innimellom stoppet jeg opp og spiste blåbær , og det smakte fortreffelig. Litt trening med vekter er også bra. En dusj etterpå skapte en ny følelse av velvære, og nå sitter jeg her og nyter freden som en søndagsformiddag kan gi. En lett frokost er spist, og jeg er tilfreds med en fantastisk start på dagen. Føler meg fri fra bekymring, fri fra ansvar, akkurat idag. Følelse av helg etter en arbeidsuke. Det er lenge siden jeg har hatt helgefølelse, og det er litt godt å ha det igjen. Setter mer pris på en fridag. Arbeidsplassen jeg har fått er et bønnesvar. Så gode kollegaer, herlig stemning og glade kunder. Jeg er full av selvtillit og synes det er gøy å ekspedere og yte service igjen. Buketter, dekorasjoner, båredekorasjoner og en brudebukett som står for tur snart. Moro med et kreativt yrke. Jeg merker skapergleden i arbeidet. Godt å tjene litt penger igjen.

Har klart å skape en hjemmefølelse i den nye leiligheten min. Synes jeg har fått det koselig, og mange gjester har vært med på å innvie mitt nye bosted. Gode venninner, både nye vennskap og gamle relasjoner har jeg pleiet. Det er gøy å invitere og åpne sitt hjem for mennesker som betyr noe for en, eller som kommer til å bety noe spesielt for deg senere. Jeg er heldig som også har familie som bor i nærheten, trygt og godt. Jeg har min menighet her,og  mitt hjem er også i menigheten. Det er godt å komme sammen i Guds menighet og kjenne en omsorg der som er fylt av Guds kjærlighet. Atmosfæren i min menighet er så god å drikke av. Jeg nyter fellesskapet som er der. Og søndagen, er dagen hvor vi kommer sammen som familie og oppmuntrer og velsigner hverandre. Så det gleder jeg meg til i dag. Etter en god middag er det tid for å komme i forsamlingen min, og treffe gode venner, og kanskje få noen nye.

En nyvasket ladning med klær er hengt opp til tørk, jeg har akkurat kledd meg for dagen og innviet noen nye bukser jeg kjøpte tidligere i uken. Jeg er alene, men likevel ikke ensom. For Gud er alltid her, og Hans nærvær skaper en følelse av tilhørighet til noe større jeg ikke kan begripe eller forstå omfanget av. Har en uke foran meg med blanke ark, og ferdiglagte gjerninger å gå inn i. Det er godt at det er en som har oversikt og kontroll  i livet mitt. Meg selv, og min Far. Han viser meg veien å gå, og gir meg fred når jeg tar de rette valgene. Jeg velger livet, for Han er veien, sannheten og livet.  Livet er godt å leve, jeg har fått et løft i livet mitt og ser livet med nye øyne. Snart er det tid for husgruppestart og Susy serken oppstart. Fellesskap jeg setter stor pris på. Og arbeidet med street aid. August er en måned for nye begynnelser, samtidig ender en periode som er deilig. Mye regn den siste måneden har gjort badeliv uaktuelt, men det er en sjarme med sommeren uansett værforhold. Siste rest av sommeren går vi inn i nå, og jeg håper det blir noen varme dager ennå. En tur med Stena line står også for tur snart, en liten smak av Danmark blir bra å få med seg. Drømmer som tar form, mye å se frem til. Griper dagen og nyter livet, cafeturer har det blitt mange av og flere står for tur. Jeg er glad, jeg er elsket, jeg er fri, jeg er trygg og jeg er tatt godt hånd om av en kjærlig himmelsk Pappa. Hva mer kan en jente ønske seg? mitt ønske fra mitt hjerte vet Han om, og Han har lovt at om jeg gleder meg i Ham, vil Han gi meg alt mitt hjerte trakter etter. Et løfte jeg tar på alvor og gleder meg til kommer i oppfyllelse i rette tid.

Desde que ela chegou em casa, eu me lembro que eu queria ela. Só ela.

Seja pela cor caramelo, ou pelos olhos enormes, ou por ela sempre ter sido tímida e comilona!

Depois de um tempo eu sempre notei que pra elas eu não era mãe, e sim uma irmã mais velha, que enchia o saco, que brincava, que brigava, que dava besteira sem ninguém ficar sabendo.

Ai veio a noticia eu estava na minha 4° pedra no rim e ela tava com uma insuficiência renal, alguém tão pequena não deveria sofrer tanto!

Eu realmente não tenho coisas grandiosas pra falar sobre isso, afinal de contas eu nunca fui tão ligada a você. A gente estava ligada da minha forma mais estranha, gulosa, quieta… nunca exigiu um carinho.. nunca exigia ser notada.

Eu só não queria que você fosse assim, pode ser egoísmo. Mas o filho da puta que te levou pra longe da nossa família, não sabe como você vai fazer falta, dividindo besteira comido, dividindo a cama com o Jorginho, vendo a mamãe fazer comida e pedindo tomate, deixando a tica limpar sua orelha e brigando com a midori por um espaço na caminha!

É isso, você ta com a gente pra sempre, a menina dos olhos caramelados~

As melhor ladrona de frutas~

E a cadelinha mais forte que eu já conheci, você agüentou até o final.

Che ragazza truzza!

Questo Webblog mi sta iniziando a fare schifo, come mai?

Questa è Susy e in questo video spiega per quale motivo è truzza e da quanto tempo lo è diventata!!!

Beh! da quando ho visto questo video (circa ieri) questa ragazzina è diventata il mio idolo!!!!! Cioè è gia la quinta volta che vedo sto video e…..beh ogni volta che lo vedo mi faccio delle risate!!!

beh…poi cioè parliamo anche noi come dei cretini alle persone che lovviamo!!

La storia è poco conosciuta: l’incredibile parabola terrena di San Pietro Nolasco, fondatore dell’ordine religioso dei Mercedari, che in piena conquista spagnola da parte dell’islam all’inizio del tredicesimo secolo, piuttosto che lo scontro di religione o la passività sociale, cerca di fare qualcosa. Decide di comprare i cristiani fatti schiavi dai saraceni con le stoffe che commercia e i soldi che  ottiene chiedendo  l’elemosina. Ma non basta più, non basta mai, e allora ecco l’idea: offrirsi, fino a sacrificare la propria vita, perché nessuno ha un amore più grande di questo, dare la vita per i propri amici.

Questa compagnia, la Compagnia Teatro Santa Lucia, nasce nel 1996 e io ci lavoro dal 2001. Il suo scopo è da sempre quello di percorrere una ricerca nell’ambito del teatro dello spirito, l’ageografia e sopratutto portare il teatro laddove il teatro non arriva di solito. Quest’anno è stato fatto uno strappo alla regola, e nella rassegna di teatro itinerante, toccheremo molti spazi teatrali piuttosto che case di riposo,  chiese, orfanotrofi e carceri come invece è successo nei primi otto anni.

Uno spettacolo rock che rappresenta un’altra generazione di giovani, quelli dei primi decenni del ‘200, che hanno davvero lasciato il segno, senza una Maria de Filippi, ma solo con la passione e credendo fermamente in qualcosa. Che tra l’altro,  dura da ben otto secoli.

Beati loro.

“THERE IS NO OUTLET FOR THIS DESPAIR,” someone sang across the aisles.

“Who is that?” I asked my puggle, Diego Garcia, who I’d brought along with me to the store. D.G. was riding in the kid seat in the big red cart, which was empty, and he wasn’t paying attention. “Hey,” I said, and tickled his ear. “Is that Hannah Montana? Listen.”

It was eerily somber in this Wal-Mart, which had opened last year, ten miles from my apartment, to acclaim and fanfare, but there was no black bunting or funerary crepe, and employees drifted by with the customary fifty-yard stare. Business as usual. The crowds were sparse, nothing was happening that would frighten a child, and I had avoided the pounding surf of the weekend crowds (as is also customary), confident that the item I desired would still be on the shelves.

These were uncertain times; this might be the last year you could load the big-box big screen into the back of the doomed suburban supertanker. Who would gamble on my little gift for D.G., my own safe bet, the Godinger Silver Vintage Gas Pump Liquor Dispenser? Crafted of chrome and copper, the Godinger held up to 32 ounces of liquid, and could not be machine-washed. I had looked the thing up online, where one regional compatriot (female, age 45-54) had given the Godinger the full five-star rating in all five categories (value, expectations, features, durability, and appearance), and sold me with the following remark:

Even though it says not to keep the liquor in the tank overnight, we do, and have had no problems with the dispenser.

All for $22.87. The Lil’ Chill Shot Liquor Shot Chiller and Dispenser, by contrast, cost a full $144.44, and looked like a toaster that had been shanghaied by a meth lab. I laughed down at D.G. “Middle class my ass!”

But the holiday spirit was not in his eyes, and on the way to the checkout station I passed the newsstand hurriedly.

“Blight and offal,” I groaned to the checkout clerk, Susy.

“Hi Dickel,” she said, perfunctorily swiping the Godinger. “Nice.”

(Susy’s the niece of my best hometown friend Declan, who I haven’t seen or heard from in eight months. He was flying out for the poker championship in Vegas that Nerve was sponsoring. Deck’s a big boy.)

“The store smells like ammonia, and the news makes me want to smoke crack.” I flipped open my wallet for my Wal-Mart Discover card. “No acts of penance you people have to do? Where’s your black ribbon?” I flipped the lapel of her vest.

Susy swatted my hand away. “You are insensitive,” she hissed. “You can not bring pets into the store.” She slapped a plastic bag down on the scanner. “You’re insensitive.”

I cradled D.G. with my free arm. “Pet? This is my baby. How dare you.”

“Shut up.” In one swift move she had bagged the Godinger and lifted a little Mac laptop up onto the counter.

“You have wireless in here?”

“Shut up.” Susy rattled off a few keystrokes. Click. Click. Black nail polish. She still bit her nails. There was a zit on her neck.

“Here.” She swiveled around the laptop. “This is all we get. At least around here. The Wal-Mart at the End of the World.”

It was a press release from the Wal-Mart Stores corporate webpage.

“UPDATED,” it said. “Walmart Statement on Black Friday Incident at Valley Stream Store.”

We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County Police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased. We are continuing to work closely with local law enforcement and we are reaching out to those involved.

“No mercy,” I said. “They’d hire a Somali pirate.”

“They did,” said Susy. “Did you see that dude outside in the Santa hat?”

“That,” I said, “is a Salvation Army volunteer. And she’s a woman.”

Susy leaned forward. “It’s horrible,” she whispered. “Everyone here pretends like nothing happened. Half of them probably don’t even know. How can I tell them?”

“They’re already so shaken by the Bombay thing,” I groaned.

“It’s Mumbai, Dickel,” Susy sniffed. “Why are you so heartless?”

“I’m snarling because the alternative is cowering,” I said. “Isn’t that right, Puggles?” I bounced D.G., who was getting heavy, in my arm.

Susy was actually crying, dabbing at her eyes with a dirty iPhone sleeve. “You’re ignorant. Be vulnerable,” she said. “Can’t you do that?”

“You don’t want to see me vulnerable,” I growled. “Now sell me the fucking whimsical whiskey spigot.”

She was clutching the cash register like a refugee. “Can’t you at least pretend?”

No impatient queue had been forming behind me. D.G.’s hind legs were struggling restlessly against my bicep. I clenched down on him harder.

“Look,” I said. “It says right here — ‘In 2008, we were named one of the Best Companies for Diverse Graduates by Diversity Edge.’ We can totally get a Somali pirate hired here. I’ll fill out an application right now. There’s no one waiting in line. We can do it together.”

Susy coughed out a laugh, but it could have been a sob. “Dickel — ” she slightly mispronounced my name, like the Kelly character from those YouTubes, which at first I thought was a way of insulting me — “Deck was in Goa the week before last. Over Thanksgiving he was in Mumbai. Dickel,” she said, almost grunting it, correctly this time, and the way my name sounded spoken that way caused me actually to flinch, and I was grabbing the Godinger and shoving the big red cart forward aimlessly and shouting at D.G. to be quiet when we made it out into the parking lot, where I stopped about four feet away from the white ‘62 Dodge Dart that I drive and robotically headed back to the Wal-Mart.

The pirate woman was jingling the Salvation Army bell and I stuffed whatever I had in my front pocket into the red collection hopper, fixing my gaze straight ahead in case it was the receipt for the Godinger.

D.G. had shut up and stopped squirming as we walked up to the sliding doors, which slid open, and they stayed that way as I looked silently across the entryway at Susy, who was busying herself with a fat little Latino kid and his tall, thin sister. They were buying some sparkly blue Christmas ornaments in a thick plastic sleeve. I was that close, close enough to see the kid pick his nose as his sister paid with a credit card and signed for her purchase, but Susy did not notice me standing at the door even after it started sliding closed and I made it slide open again, and in the Dart, after swinging by the ABC store, I pulled over and hiked a hill (D.G. was still in the car) to a Seventh-Day Adventist church that was closed and stared up at the belfry for a while before uncrumpling the brown bag in my hand and twisting the cap off the whiskey.

Primero que nada este no es un relato de alguna fantasía sexual de un sabado por la noche en el msn. Esto es tal y como me ocurrió.

Comenzaba el segundo semestre dentro de la preparatoria popular, como siempre yo llegaba con mis compañeros a saludarlos y a bromear en eso mi mirada se fijo en una esculutural figura, al parecer era un chica nueva, qe venia de alguna a otra escuela a tomar algunas clases a mi salon.

 Rapiddamente fui con mi amigo Jean marie qe es uno dde los protagonista de esta historia, pronto accedimos a preguntarle su nombre y datos personales, ya saben lo qe todos hacen intentando sacar platica a una chica.

Ella dijo mi nombre es Susana, pero me puedes decir Sussy, fije mi mirada en sus grandes ojos que eran de un café claro que con solo de verlos se me hacia agua la boca.

Ella era bajita, muy linda de la cara, con unos ojos grandes y hermosos, como ya mencione, y una figura esculpida a mano por los mismísimos dioses GRIEGOS.

Unos pechos prominentes de leche, el néctar del el placer. En ese momento ella traía un brasier negro que se le transparentaba con la blusa ya que era de color blanco y casi no dejaba nada a la imaginación Tenia un culo, grande con una cintura hermosa, digna de tomarla de agarradera que por cierto lo tenia paradito.

Susy: Claro, nunca nadie me hubiese invitado, y menos un chavo como tu tan lindo (y rió penosa). Jaja al vdd no es por presumir pero tengo un cuerpo bien esculpido ya que asisto frecuentemente al gimnasio. Llego el día clave, para hacer mi plan, mientras conversaba con juan, zamo, alan, luis, Villegas, dieguinho y demás compañeros.

Llego susy y me dice: -Hola, ya estas listo para bailar toda la noche, (con una risita picara que le hacia notar sus facciones a un mas linda ya que ella era blanca de cabello negro) A lo que respondí, claro susy, debo decirte que hoy luces espectacular (Vestía una falda negra muy corta que dejaba lucir unas piernas bellísimas blancas, y una blusa rosa muy escotado que dejaba ver parte de sus grandes y gloriosos senos que habían sido producto de unas cuantas pajas de mi parte y de las de mis compañeras) Entramos en el antro y para no hacerlo tan largo les voy a decir que lo bueno empezó ya casi al ultimo por ahí de la 1:30 de la mañana cuando ya estábamos un poco ebrios los 2 y al ritmo del reggaeton empezamos a como quien dicen ‘’perrear’’.

 Al salir del antro note que susy estaba un poco ebria así que decidí llevarla a mi casa ya que mis padres habían salido de la ciudad y pues no había problema, y mi hermano había salido a una fiesta con su novia e iban a dormir juntos en el departamento de ella.

 Procedimos a mi casa que no estaba mi lejos del antro, pase a susy y le di una pastilla porque en verdad que lucía mal, la recosté en el sillón para que estuviera mas cómoda y aproveche para arrimar sus tetas un tanto a mi cara. Cuando noté que ella me veía fijamente a los ojos como si quisiera desnudarme con ella, sentí una profunda atracción hacia ella que mi consciente y mi subconsciente estaban totalmente muertos, de pronto esas ganas de lujuria y de placer estallaron con un beso tranquilo y al segundo ya era un beso lleno de lujuria y pasión.

Sentía todos los nervios de punta, un hormigueo que recorrió cada parte aunque fuera la más minima de mi cuerpo. Agarre su culo y lo apreté a lo que ella respondió con un brinquito porque imagine que no esperaba que lo hiciera. Baje su blusa y que me encuentro UNAS GRANDES TETAS CON UN PESON ROSA MUY HERMOSO, no contuve mis ganas y las chupe, acaricie bese y demás, alimentando mi alma con sus enormes senos como si mi vida dependiera de ello.

Ella solo jadeaba y hacia pequeños gestos con su cara producto de la exitacion a la que estaba sometida, decía ammm!! Eso claro que a mi me pone a mil, tenia una erección dentro de mi pantalón, creo que la mas grande en la historia de mi adolescencia, en ese momento sentí como su mano bajo por mi estomago hasta llegar a aquel monstruo encerrado en su jaula, lo apretó tan fuerte, y con la otra mano desabrocho mi pantalón y bajo el ciper de mi pantalón y con un acto de dulzura y salvajismo, saco aquella gran bestia que añoraba por tocar ese sexo humedecido. Todo esto sin despegar sus ojos de mi mirada, una mirada fría como si me estuviera tentando a tomarla con la fuerza del universo.

Quito mi pantalón de un solo movimiento a lo que le respondí quitándole la falda de un solo golpe, y dándole una fuerte nalgada en medio de ese inmenso culo que me estaba casi hablando diciendo que quería mi monstruoso falo dentro de ella. Ella volteo hacia el sillon y dijo apenada que era su primera vez y que tuviera cuidado, eso arrojo unos cuantos líquidos de mi pene a causa de la excitación que esto me promenia. Descubrí ese sexo, y que me llevo una grata sorpresa al ver ese coñito bien depilado y de una tonalidad rosa, enseguida baje mi cabeza para comerme ese coñito que estaba más húmedo que las mismísima cataratas el Niágara.

A recent search for long-lived charged massive particles in CDF data has found no signal in 1.0 inverse femtobarns of proton-antiproton collisions produced by the Tevatron collider at Fermilab.

Most subnuclear particles we know have very short lifetimes: they disintegrate into lighter bodies by the action of strong, or electromagnetic, or weak interactions. In the first case the particle is by necessity a hadron- one composed of quarks and gluons-, and the strength of the interaction that disintegrates it is evident by the fact that the life of the particle is extremely short:  we are talking about a billionth of a trillionth of a second, or even less time. In the second case, the electromagnetic decay takes longer, but still in most instances a ridiculously small time; the neutral pion, for instance, decays to two photons () in about seconds: eighty billionths of a billionth of a second. In the third case, however, the weakness of the interaction manifests itself in decay times that are typically long enough that the particle is indeed capable of traveling for a while.

Currently, the longest-living subnuclear particle is the neutron, which lives about 15 minutes before undergoing the weak decay , the well-studied beta-decay process which is at the basis of a host of radioactive phenomena. The neutron is very lucky, however, because its long life is not only due to the weakness of virtual W-boson exchange, but also by the fact that this particle happens to have a mass just a tiny bit larger than the sum of the bodies it must decay into: this translates in a very, very small “phase space” for the decay products, and a small phase space means a small decay rate.

Of course, we have only discussed unstable particles so far: but the landscape of particle physics includes also stable particles, i.e. the proton, the electron, the photon, and (as far as we know) the neutrinos. We would be very surprised if this latter set included particles we have not discovered yet, but we should be more possibilistic.

A stable, electrically-neutral massive particle would be less easy to detect than we could naively think. In fact, most dark-matter searches aimed at detecting a signal of a stable massive particle are tuned to be sensitive to very small signals: if a gas of neutralinos pervaded the universe, we might be unaware of their presence until we looked at rotation curves of galaxies and other non-trivial data, and even then, a direct signal in a detector would require extremely good sensitivity, since a stable neutral particle would be typically very weakly interacting, which means that swarms of such bodies could easily  fly through whatever detector we cook up unscathed. Despite that, we of course are looking for such things, with CDMS, DAMA, and other dark-matter-dedicated experiments.

The existence of a charged massive stable particle (CHAMP for friends), however, is harder to buy. An electrically-charged particle does not go unseen for long: its electromagnetic interaction is liable to betray it easily. However, there is no need to require that a CHAMP is by force THE reason of missing mass in the universe. These particles could be rare, or even non-existent in the Universe today, and in that case our only chance to see them would be in hadron-collision experiments, where we could produce them if the energy and collision rate are sufficient.

What would happen in the event of a creation of a CHAMP in a hadron collision is that the particle would slowly traverse the detector, leaving a ionization trail. A weak-interacting CHAMP (and to some extent even a strongly-interacting one) would not interact strongly with the heavy layers of iron and lead making up the calorimeter systems of which collider experiments are equipped, and so it would be able to punch through, leaving a signal in the muon chambers before drifting away. What we could see, if we looked carefully, would be a muon track which ionizes the gas much more than muons usually do -because massive CHAMPS are heavy, and so they kick atoms around as they traverse the gas. Also, the low velocity of the particle (be it clear, here “low” means “only few tenths of the speed of light”!) would manifest itself in a delay in the detector signals as the particle traverses them in succession.

CDF has searched for such evidence in its data, by selecting muon candidates and determining whether their crossing time and ionization is compatible with muon tracks or not. More specifically, by directly measuring the time needed for the track to cross the 1.5 meter-radius of the inner tracker, and the particle momentum, the mass of the particle can be inferred. That is easier said than done, however: a muon takes about 5 nanoseconds to traverse the 1.5 meters of the tracker, and to discern a particle moving half that fast, one is requred to measure this time interval with a resolution better than a couple of nanoseconds.

The CDF Time-Of-Flight system (TOF) is capable of doing that. One just needs to determine the production time with enough precision, and then the scintillation bars which are mounted just outside of the tracking chamber (the COT, for central outer tracker) will measure the time delay. The problem with this technique, however, is that the time resolution has a distinctly non-Gaussian behaviour, which may introduce large backgrounds when one selects tracks compatible with a long travel time. The redundancy of CDF comes to the rescue: one can measure the travel time of the particles through the tracker by looking at the residuals of the track fit. Let me explain.

A charged particle crossing the COT leaves a ionization trail. These ions are detected by 96 planes of sense wires along the path, and from the pattern of hit wires the trajectory can be reconstructed. However, each wire will have recorded the released charge at a different time, because they are located at different distances from the track, and the ions take some time to drift in the electric field before their signal is collected. The hit time is used in the fit that determines the particle trajectory: residuals of these time measurements after the track is fit provide a measurement of the particle velocity. In fact, a particle moving slowly creates ionization signals that are progressively delayed as a function of radius; these residuals can be used to determine the travel time.

The resulting measurement has a three-times-worse precision than that coming from the dedicated TOF system (fortunately, I would say, otherwise the TOF itself would be a rather useless tool); however, the uncertainty on this latter measurement has a much more Gaussian behaviour! This is an important asset, since by requiring that the two time measurements are consistent with one another, one can effectively remove the non-Gaussian behavior of the TOF measurement.

By combining crossing time -i.e. velocity- and track momentum measurement, one may then derive a mass estimate for the particle. The distribution of reconstructed masses for CHAMP candidates is shown in the graph below. Overimposed to the data, the distribution expected for a 220-GeV CHAMP signal has been overlaid. It is clear to see that the mass resolution provided by the method is rather poor: despite of that, a high-mass charged particle would be easy to spot if it were there.

One note of warning about this graph: the distribution above shows masses ranging all the way from 0 to 100 GeV, but that does not mean that these tracks have similar masses: the vast majority of tracks are real muons, for which the velocity is underestimated due to instrumental effects: in a sense, the very shape of the curve describes the resolution of the time measurement provided by the analysis.

The absence of tracks compatible with a mass larger than 120 GeV in the data allows to place model-independent limits on the CHAMP mass. Weak-interacting CHAMPS are excluded, in the kinematic region covered by the muon chambers, and with , if they are produced with a cross section larger than 10 fb. For strongly-interacting CHAMPS the search considers the case of a scalar top R-hadron, a particle which is predicted by Supersymmetric theories when the stable stop quark binds together with an ordinary quark. In that case, the 95% CL limit can be set at a mass of 249 GeV.

It is interesting to note that this analysis, while not using the magnitude of the ionization left by the track in the gas chamber (the so-called on which most past searches of CHAMPS have been based, e.g. in CDF (Run I) and ALEPH) to identify the CHAMP signal candidates, still does use the to infer the (background) particle species when determining the resolution of the time measurement from COT residuals. So the measurement shows once more how collider detectors really benefit from the high redundancy of their design!
