Andyway, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a private, insurance-company-funded organization (don’t get me started on those bastards, the insurance ones, that is), has released their “Top Safety Pick” for 19 sedans and 8 SUVs fro the 2010 model year. Their ratings are, in order, from the top: Good (G), Acceptable (A), Marginal (M), and Poor (P).

Ford and Volvo (a Ford-owned subsidiary), each earned 6, while Subaru, Volkswagen and their Audi division each received 5.

Chrysler earned 4, while Honda and GM each had 2, with Toyota, BMW, Mazda and Mitsubishi receiving none.

Stockholm, 18 November 2009 - Pabrikan otomotif asal Swedia, Volvo, berencana menarik 9.667 unit XC60S karena sabuk pengaman pengemudi dinilai belum lolos uji tabrakan (crash test). Seperti dikutip, autonews, produk yang ditarik itu merupakan model 2010 yang kini telah beredar di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada.

Ihwal permasalahan di sabuk pengaman tersebut diketahui setelah Lembaga Asuransi Keamanan Berkendara Amerika Serikat, yang melakukan uji tes benturan samping menemukan bahwa sabuk pengaman dari varian Volvo tersebut belum pernah menjalani tes.

Sementara, proses uji itu dilakukan secara rutin untuk memastikan mobil telah lolos uji dan berhak mendapat sertfikat sebagai kendaraan dengan tingkat keamanan tinggi.

Seperti dikutip New York Times, lembaga itu menyabut, sabuk pengaman untuk pengemudi di varian XC60 itu terlepas dari salah satu titik di sebelah kiri pinggul saat dikenkan, sehingga membahayakan pengemudi. Uji itu dilakukan dengan cara Tes menabrakkan mobil pada sisi pengemudi dengan tingkat kecepatan 31 mile per jam.

Sementara itu, John Hope juru bicara Volvo menyebutkan, pihaknya belum pernah menerima laporan tentang kasus kecelakaan yang terjadi berkaitan dengan sabuk pengaman tersebut. Dia menambahkan, selama ini sudah dilakukan 50 kali uji tabrakan samping yang dilakukan di Volvo Safety Center in Gothenberg, Swedia, namun hasilnya tidak terjadi apa-apa pada piranti pengaman itu.

“Meski hanya dilakukan satu kali pengujian. Namun demikian pabrikan tetap akan menarik kembali (mobil) secara sukarela,” ujar Hope.

Disebutkan pula, pihak Volvo secara lisan maupun melalui surat melaporkan ihwal rencana tersebut Badan Keselamatan Transportasi Amerika Serikat (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Sementara pemberitahuan kepada pemilik Volvo dilakukan dua hingga tiga pekan mendatang.

Perbaikan atau penggantian yang akan dilakukan meliputi rumah dudukan sabuk pengaman. Perabikan tersebut diperkirakan hanya membutuhkan waktu setengah jam dan tidak dipungut biaya.

Dan Autech Japan Inc. adalah perusahaan yang didirikan oleh Nissan Motor Company Limited Jepang.

Perusahaan ini membagi produknya dalam tiga kategori Specialty Vehicles (SV), Life Care Vehicle (LV) dan Work Use Vehicle (WV). Sementara Nissan X-Trail yang diluncurkan PT NMI adalah kategori Specialty Vehicle.

“Dengan penampilan barunya ini, New X-Trail menjadi lebih fresh, mewah dan semakin stylish, sesuai dengan ciri khas desain Autech. Desain Autech juga akan kami aplikasikan ke line-up Nissan lainnya,” tutur Takayuki Kimura, Presiden Direktur NMI, di Jakarta, Selasa (17/11) malam.

Kimura menambahkan, kendaraan yang telah dirancang dan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dan keinginan konsumen itu, tetap memperhitungkan faktor kenyamanan untuk penggunaan sehari-hari.

Nissan X-Trail yang menggunakan aplikasi Autech adalah tipe 2.0L MT, 2.0L CVT dan 2.5L St. New X-Trail 2.0L MT versi Autech dibanderol Rp 298,6 juta on the road Jakarta, New X-Trail 2.0L CVT Rp 312,4 juta.

Sementara X-Trail 2.5L St dibanderol Rp 327,2 juta. Ketiganya ditawarkan dalam lima pilihan warna yaitu, diamond silver, grey metallic, black solid, burning red, dan pacific blue.

Toyota has big plans in store for its small car project. Toyota has zeroed on Dentsu Communications to handle the advertisements for Toyota’s small car which will be soon launched in India.

It has been roughly estimated that the volume and the size of the business is in the vicinity of Rs 100 crore. Dentsu, along with this responsibility, will also be looking at the advertising duties of Toyota Prius, which is pitched as a green car and is launching next month.

Toyota’s advertisements belonging to the passenger car segment will be handled by Dentsu while PerceptH will be handling the advertisement duties of the SUV and the MUV categories.

The other cars belonging to Toyota stable in India include Camry and Corolla Altis in the passenger car segment and Innova, Prado, New Land Cruiser and Fortuner comprising SUV and MUV.

The entry of Toyota into the small car business is considered significant, as it is moving towards a more mass market. The advertising blitzkrieg by car giants entering India, including Volkswagen, in the recent times explains Toyota’s needs to keep the ad size significant. The marketing activity is slated to begin soon.

As a new parent, I have always been guilty of driving a compact car when everyone around me keeps telling me that even though SUV’s are bad for the environment they are so much safer in case of an accident. I cringed a bit at every such discussion but thought that maybe they had a point.

But then I thought why not use data visualization to get to the bottom of this and find out what the truth is. Let me preface this by saying that this is my first attempt at visualizing the data I could find for free and any visualization suggestions or data sources that you are aware of will be greatly appreciated.

Step 1 – Type of the car vs Fatalities

I first wanted to find out what is the breakdown of car crashes as compared to the type of car. I found that there is extensive data (see data sources below) about car crashes and fatalities. I decided to use fatalities as a measure of how ’safe’ the car is and so this graph shows the type of car as compared to the fatalities in 2008. I was sad to see that ‘Passenger cars’ were ranked first but happy to see that ‘Light trucks’ were pretty high up too. Minivans, Compact utility and Large Utility vehicles had far fewer fatalities and I was worrying whether my worst fears (SUV/Minivan = safer) were coming true.

Step 2 – Sales for each type of car

But then I thought that the number of accidents obviously is very dependent on the number of cars that get sold per year and if more passenger cars were getting sold, then more of them would be in a fatal accident thus giving it a higher number. So I found out what the car sale numbers were for 2008 (see data source below) and decided to plot that.

Step 3 – Comparing the Fatalities/Sales ratio

Then the next obvious thing to do was to compute a ratio of the number of fatal accident per type of car with the number of cars sold for that type in a year. On computing the ratio, I found something very interesting. Sorting the graph based on this ratio, I found that Compact Utility vehicles had the highest ratio of fatal accidents to sales. If you look at the first graph, you will see that the compact utility vehicles do not have a large amount of fatal accidents to begin with, but then when that number is divided by the total amount of compact utility vehicles sold, we find an interesting insight (much to my relief and joy).

Passenger cars have a lower ratio than Compact utility vehicles, Large utility vehicles and Light trucks.

Anyone who has used Tableau has probably already guessed that all these visualizations were created using Tableau Software and so I visualized the Ratio, Fatal Accidents, Sales all in one image. It shows clearly how compact utility vehicles have a high ratio even though trucks and passenger cars have higher fatalities and more cars of those types were sold.

Primul SUV românesc, Dacia Duster,  produs în premieră la uzinele auto de la Piteşti. Versiunea de raliu a modelului Duster va fi condusă de către Alain Prost, fostul mare pilotul de Formula 1, în “Trofeul Andros”.

Dacia a ales să-şi inaugureze modelul Duster pe un circuit de gheaţă, pentru a demonstra capacităţile unui brand cunoscut pentru raportul excelent între preţ şi calitate.

“Sunt încântat să concurez pe Dacia Duster, este un vehicul complet nou şi sunt mândru să particip la promovarea brandului Dacia într-un context atât de original precum Trofeul Andros. Gisteren had ik het genoegen om weer eens bij de Bovag te zijn. Naast uitstekende sprekers zoals marketinggoeroe Jos Burgers en Tom van het Hek was er ook een toespraak van Rogier Kuin over de kilometerheffing. Heel actueel, want nadat afgelopen vrijdag de regering liet weten wat de prijs van de kilometerheffing gaat worden is er een storm van protest ontstaan vanuit de oppositie. Uiteraard valt er altijd te twisten over de uitvoering van plannen, maar de gedachte om mensen te laten betalen voor gebruik van de weg en mate van vervuiling lijkt me geen slechte. Als het doel een lagere co2 door minder auto’s hiermee gehaald wordt kunnen we allemaal tevreden zijn lijkt me. De discussie over die co2 en de broeikaseffecten zijn we gelukkig voorbij en wij zijn de generatie die iets zal moeten doen. Nu hebben we de kans om iets te doen, straks niet meer. Ik ben altijd van mening geweest: ijsberen boven SUV-s en dat zal zo blijven, of SUV’s moeten dusdanig schoon gaan rijden dat er geen verschil meer is.

Berlin, 19 November 2009 - Pabrikan otomotif asal Jerman, Volkswagen (VW) menyediakan 35 varian pick up kabin ganda produksinya, yaitu VW Amarok sebagai mobil resmi yang digunakan di gelaran Reli Dakar 2010 mendatang. Dari jumlah itu, 20 unit untuk panitia dan 15 unit untuk kalangan media yang meliput hajatan tersebut.

Reli ini akan digelar di Amerika Selatan pada 1- 17 Januari 2010 mendatang. Titik pemberangkatan peserta di Argentina, kemudian melintasi Chili dan berakhir di Argentina. Total jarak yang ditempuh dalam reli ini mencapai 5.592 mil atau 9.000 kilometer

“Kami senang (gelaran Reli Dakar) menggunakan Volkswagen Amarok sebagai kendaraan pendukung,” tutur Kris Nissen, Direktur Motorsport Volkswagen dalam siaran pers Volkswagen seperti dikutip worlcarfans, Rabu (18/11).

“Sebab Reli Dakar membutuhkan kendaraan pendukung yang memiliki kesempurnaan teknologi tinggi, ketangguhan serta kecepatan. Amarok merupakan kendaraan yang sangat tepat bagi tim kami,” tandas Nissen.

Sebelumnya, VW Argentina menyebut, kendaraan jenis truk ringan itu akan diproduksi akhir 2009 ini di Pacheco, pabrik VW yang terletak di luar Buenos-Aires, Argentina. Untuk proyek ini, VW menggelontorkan dana tak kurang dari US$ 340 juta atau sekitar Rp 3,2 triliun.

Disebutkan, VW akan mengekspor kendaraan itu pada kuartal pertama 2010. Produksi pertama akan dipasarkan di Eropa, Afrika, serta Australia selain Amerika Selatan. Pasar pertama yang dibidik adalah Amerika Selatan di awal tahun.

Kemudian Amerika Tengah pada musim semi 2010, setelah itu Eropa dan Rusia pada musim panas sebelum merambah pasar Australia dan Afrika.

Amarok akan ditawarkan dalam dua versi , yaitu diesel TDI common rail dan mesin bensin direct injection. Namun hingga kini, VW belum memberikan rincian tentang kapasitas mesin maupun berapa varian pick up kabin ganda itu dibanderol.
