I definitely must watch this…

What would you do if, while rolling on ecstasy and making a phone call, the homeless man you smashed into with your car  flew violently through the windshield and, while moaning in agony, spilled blood all over your passenger seat?  If it was real life, you might do what the young nurse in Texas did and let the poor indigent bleed to death in your garage and then dump the body in the lake.  But if you are in a fictional retelling of said  incident, you would most likely end up wishing you were the one stuck helplessly in the windshield; this would be the only way to avoid the ridiculous pitfalls and sheer idiocy of our culprit.

And so we have Stuart Gordon’s follow up to the superbly crafted, David Mamet scripted, Edmond.  Mena Suvari, returning to Gordon’s world after a brief stint in Edmond, plays Brandi Boski, a working nurse in a retirement home.  During a strangely constructed opening scene, complete with pulse pounding rap music and slow moving elderly, we learn that Brandi’s days are spent changing diapers and pleasing her demanding boss, while her nights are spent high on pills with her drug peddling boyfriend.

Gordon fills Suvari’s Brandi with numerous contradictions, but these are oddly transparent and serve mainly to seduce some brief moments of sympathy from the audience.  Unfortunately, by the time Brandi carelessly runs down Stephen Rea’s Thomas Bardo, we can only feel disgust toward the girl who longs for a promotion, makes fun of her boss while within eye shot, and rolls on X until the wee hours.  Unfortunately, I found myself wondering how she would make it to work tomorrow?  I am sure this is not the reaction that Gordon was going for, but it is these questions that continued to pop into my mind throughout the film.

Gordon spends the first twenty minutes setting up the tragic encounter. Rea’s character is evicted from his apartment and forced into the streets with a handful of clothes and a picture of young man, presumably his lost son.  Revisiting a similar theme from Edmond, Rea is desperate for human kindness; but there is none to be found.  He faces the constant reminder that sometimes our choices, though we are free to make them, are often severely limited.  Wandering the streets alone, he chooses to spend the night on a park bench.  Of course, the police have little sympathy for the homeless, and when the officer firmly states, “it is your choice,” we can feel Rea’s character break apart inside.

Finally, Brandi is in the car and heading home.  Thomas is on the move, complete with shopping cart and slumping physique.  The moment we have been waiting for, and at least at this moment, it is worth the wait.  Equal parts violent, grotesque, and sad, the collision is a powerful reminder of the frailty of the human body when facing down a speeding automobile.  As his body crumbles, his head flies through the windshield shattering glass and sending blood and hair into the air.  It is horrifying, and Gordon’s direction is flawless.  It is powerful and revolting.

From here, Gordon works hard to create an emotional connection.  While Brandi’s actions following the accident are imaginable, the ultimate decisions are heart wrenching, disgusting and vile.  Much of the rest of the movie plays out like a bad horror movie: 911 quickly dismisses the dying man’s call, the neighbors are illegals and afraid to get involved, and when the effeminate neighbor’s dog exits the garage covered in blood, the distraught owner reprimands the puppy for eating garbage.

There are no redeemable characters in the movie, making the prospect of being stuck in the windshield more appealing than living anywhere near these dregs.  Stephen Rea is brilliant as the victim, and his pain is conveyed flawlessly during his initial time stuck.  However, he seems to gain strength and agility throughout even though the blood continues to flow from his mangled body.

Gordon’s directorial credits are eclectic, and his early work on Re-Animator and From Beyond are rivaled only by his later work on King of the Ants and Edmond.  Stuck falls somewhere just below these dynamic efforts, but can’t  quite overcome the cliche’s that claim so many horror victims.  Now bring on House of Re-Animator.

Suvari, 30, thinks it would be inconsiderate if she were to reveal her tattoos to her fiance’s family.

Sevgili arkadaşım Samet Güleçle (Sinerji Kolu Bş.) kendisine hayırlı olsun için ziyarete gittiğim de her zaman gördüğüm muhabbet ettiğim Adem Akar gitmiş yerine bambaşka bir insan gelmişti. Candanlığında, efendiliğinde hiç bir değişiklik yoktu elbette ama daha heyecanlı daha dinamik bir işadamı vardı karşımda o gün.

İşine sıkı sıkıya sarılmış kendisini bir öğrenci olarak gören ve hergün sektörü ile alakalı araştırma yapan dolu dolu bir adam karşıladı bizi. Bugünün değerini bilen fakat gelecek için de plan program yapan bir çizgide Adem Bey. Mesela 2 tane gelecek vaad eten mimarlık öğrencisini şirket bünyesine alıp onları yetiştirmek istiyor. Hem para kazansınlar hem de işlerini uygluyarak öğrensinler diye onlara bir olanak sağlıyor. Onlara inanıyor ve güveniyor. Neyse, 1.5 saat boyunca bir çok konudan bahsettik eski günleri yad ettik ama Siz değerli okuyucularıma bazı anektdoları maalesef özetleyerek aktarmaya çalışacağım.

Adem Akar diyorki; ”Rahmetli Sabancının dediği gibi ‘Herşeyin bir şeyini, bir şeyin de herşeyini bileceksin bu hayatta’ ” Evet değerli arkadaşlar yetkinlik ve farkındalık diye bağırıyor iş dünyası. Onlar istiyor ki mezunlar dolu gelsin. Sosyal gelsin ve en az bir konu hakkında geniş kapsamlı bilgiye sahip olarak yani yetkin olarak gelsin. Farklı olsun. Ya da fark yaratsın. Bunları ben değil İş Dünyası istiyor. Tıpkı Adem Akar gibi. Adem Bey masasında duran CV’leri gösterdi o gün bana. Dedi ‘Allah aşkına bir bak şunlara. Bir tanesi de farklı olsun bir tanesi de burdayım desin. Ama yok?’ Evet şaşılacak şekilde bir sürü piskolojisinde insanlarımız. Birileri bişey yapınca diğerleri onun peşinden gitmekte hiç tereddüt etmiyor.

Bir örnek vereyim mesela; bir arkadaşım bana iş bulmam yönünde yardım etmemi rica etti geçenlerde. olur dedim cv hazırla bir de önyazı yaz iş ile alakalı bana yolla. Benden önyazı konusunda yardım talep edince dedim ki baş vuracağın firmanın hedef kitlesi aileler. Sen de önyazında işe kabul edilirsen neler yapmayı istediğinden ve aile olmanın öneminden bahset ki firma hedef kitlesine yakın biri olduğunu farketsin senin. Bu arkadaş bana CV hazırladı ve önyazıyla beraber yolladı (mail) Sonra başka bir arkadaş benden CV hazırlama yönünde yardım (örnek cv yardımı) talep etti ben de diğer arkadaşın bana attığı maili kendisine attım ve sen bunları kendine göre doldur dedim. Bana cevaen attığı CV’sindeki önyazı inanın nerdeyse aynı idi. Yani bu ne şimdi. Bu kadar da beleşcilik olmaz değil mi? Oturup kendi önyazısını yazmak yerine başkasının duygu düşüncelerini yazmak pardon kopylayıp yapıştırmak daha kolay değil mi? Kolay olmayan bu tarz kolaycılık yapanların iş dünyasında tutunması..

Beyefendiliği, gençlere ve fikirlerine verdiği önem, profesyonel iş anlayışı ile Adem Akar benim örnek aldığım bir işadamı. Ve en önemlisi bir ağabeyim olduğu için kendimi çok şanslı hissediyorum.

I've had some shitty days, but never have yet to be stuck in the windshield of a car.

Brandi Boski’s (played the criminally underrated Mena Suvari) life is headed in the right direction.  She has a job at a nursing home that she is extremely good at.  So good in fact, she is being promoted.  She has a cool drug dealer boyfriend Rashid (played by Russell Hornsby) who not only appears to be a good bf, but also a good source of ecstasy ( or X for those in the know.)

Thomas Bardo (played by Stepen Rae), on the other hand, is falling apart at the seams.  Laid off from his job and searching for a new one, he is evicted on the spot by his dickhead landlord, and is now homeless.

Brandi decides to celebrate at a club, and after getting drunk and high on X, she drives home, and in typical drugged up girl fashion, pays more attention to her shitty phone than the road.  Thomas is crossing a street, with his newly acquired shopping cart for his belongings, and is hit by Brandi, which sends him into her windshield.  She manages to get home with Thomas still stuck in her windshield.  The rest you’ll have to see for yourself.

Stuck, directed by genre legend Stuart Gordon, who’s claim to fame is his many film adaptations of some of H.P. Lovecrafts greatest works like From Beyond and Dagon, leads us down a path of moral ambiguity and conundrum.  His camera is educated, but never too flashy.  The reason being is he has an embarrassingly strong cast to drive his movie forward, with the likes of Mena Suvari (again, criminally underrated), Stephen Rea of V for Vendetta fame (among tons of other movies he’s done), and Russell Hornsby, who’s one of those actors that when you see him, you will point to the screen and so “Look, it’s THAT guy.  He’s in a ton of shit and is always really good!”

And boy oh boy, is it a good thing that the actors are strong, because this isn’t a special effects laden piece, as one could come to expect from Stuart Gordon.  There’s no demons at play, no mad scientists who create zombies or monsters, no portals to other worlds or other craziness going on.  There is just the dilemma at hand, and the will (and lack there of) to do the right thing.

Stuck isn’t completely devoid of violence, and in typical Gordon style, when it hits, he leaves nothing to the imagination.  Gorehounds and creature-feature fans will be sorely disappointed by the lack of killing and splatter, but one thing you have to realize before watching this flick is it’s not about that.  This is horror of the mind and the conscious.  This is something bad happening to someone by virtue of their own actions they thought would never come back to haunt them or hurt others.  To me, this type of genre film can be very effective, by not only reminding us of our own mortality and fragility, but also instilling the idea of luck just fucking us over once in a while.

The last thing I’ll comment on is the ending.  As any dedicated Midnight Showing reader will probably know, I often complain that even movies I like, just seem to slap on some sequel ready ending, or just let the thing fall apart until they feel its time to roll the credits, which is usually about 90 minutes in.  Not the case with Stuck.  It had a definitive, definite ending that is just as tense, satisfying, and refreshing as the first 80 minutes are.

Stuck gets my highest recommendation, as it not only breathes some new life into Stuart Gordon’s directing career by showing another, more reserved, side of his talent, but also into the “What would YOU do” “horror” sub-genre.  It’s fast paced, twisty enough to keep your interest, and Mena Suvari gets naked.  So there’s always that to entice you into watching.

Din punct de vedere al distributiei mai apar si Macy Gray, Christopher Walken, Mo’Nique, Lucy Liu, Mena Suvari, Brian Austin Green si Ian Ziering (astia 2 au jucat in Beverly Hills 90210).

Daca nu va uitati la film pentru aia si pentru actiune, uitati-va macar pentru actrita principala .

Türk Kurtuluş Savaşı kahramanlarından asker ve politikacı. Başkomutanlık Meydan Savaşı’nda Yunan Ordusu’nu kovalayarak İzmir’e giren ilk Türk süvarilerinin komutanıdır.

1880 yılında Arnavutluk’un İşkodra kentinde doğdu. 1902 yılında Harp Akademisi’ni bitirdi. İlk görev yeri olan Dersim ve çevresinde 8 yıl görev yaptı. 1913’te, Çatalca Aşiret Süvari Tugayı’nın başında Balkan Savaşı sonrasında Edirne’ye kadar gelen Bulgar ordusunu püskürttü. I. Dünya Savaşı bittiğinde 3. Kolordu kumandanıydı.Kurtuluş Savaşı boyunca 12. Kolordu Kumandanı olarak Delibaş isyanının bastırılmasında, 1. ve 2. İnönü Savaşları’nda Sakarya Savaşı’nda görev aldı. 1921’de tümgeneralliğe yükseltildi ve Süvari Grup Komutanı oldu. Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın son yıllarında Uşak, Afyon, Alaşehir çevresindeki çarpışmlarda süvarileri büyük hizmet gördü. Kaçan Yunan ordusunu kovalayarak İzmir’e giren ilk süvari birlikleri Altay’ın komutasındaydı. Bu başarılardan sonra korgeneralliğe yükseltildi.I. dönem TBMM’de milletvekili olarak bulunuyordu ama devamlı cephede görev yapmaktaydı. II. Dönem TBMM’de de yer aldı. Aynı yıl İran ve Afganistan arasındaki sınır anlaşmazlığında hakemlik yaptı. Hazırladığı rapor anlaşmazlığın çözümlenmesinde yararlı oldu.1945′te, Yüksek Askeri Şüra üyeliği sırasında yaş haddinden emekliye ayrıldı.1946-1950 yılları arasında Burdur milletvekilliği yaptı. Demokrat Parti’nin kuruluşunda rol oynadı. 1950’den sonra siyasi hayattan da çekilerek İstanbul’a yerleşti. 26 Ekim 1974’de hayatını kaybetti. Mezarı, Ankara’daki Devlet Mezarlığı’ndadır1966 yılında Fahrettin Altay Paşa, Altay kulübünü ziyaretinde Altay soyadını nasıl aldığını şöyle anlattı:“Ulu Önder Gazi Mustafa Kemal Paşa ile mütareke yıllarında İzmir’i ziyaretimizde Altay bir İngiliz donanma karması ile Alsancak’ta oynuyordu. Maçı beraber izledik. Altay çok güzel bir oyundan sonra İngiliz’leri yenince Ulu Önder çok duygulandı, gururlandı ve Altay için takdirlerini belirtti. Aradan epey zaman geçti. Gazi Mustafa Kemal Paşa, İran ile bir sınır anlaşmazlığını halletmek üzere beni görevlendirdi ve Tebriz’e gittim. Tebriz’de bulunduğum sırada; mecliste soyadı kanunu müzakere edilmiş ve ittifakla Gazi Mustafa Kemal Paşa’ya Atatürk soyadı verilmişti. Bütün yurt kendisini yeni soyadından dolayı tebrik ediyordu. Ben de hemen bir telgraf çekmiş ve kendilerini kutlamıştım.
