So, I’m still not feeling any particularly burning theological discussions that I need to share right now…

So how about I yammer about general life again?

OK, I’ve got a new vehicle.

It’s an SUV.

I swore I’d never own an SUV.

Thing is that I like modest-sized, gas-efficient vehicles. My pride has never, ever been tied to my car or truck. I just don’t get caught up in that. If I have a reliable automobile that is ugly, I don’t give a damn what you think of me or what assumptions you want to make about my personality, lifestyle or social worth.

But Son of Blue is 6 feet, 3 inches tall. I have a little girl. I have a wife. I live in a state where people are constantly leaving great pieces of furniture and other household essentials on their curb with signs that say “free.” And we do our shopping in stock-up spurts.

As a result, I needed a bigger vehicle, for comfort and utility. For it truly sucks to buy a nice item at an electronics store or a used/consignment store, and then have to pay for delivery because my side doors and back seat won’t accommodate the item(s).

Since my grubby, fuel-efficient car was in its death throes, Mrs. Blue and I went car shopping. We were strongly leaning toward minvans for their utility, since neither of us wanted to make the leap to SUV ownership, since we see too many SUVs used like weapons on the road around here.

We were down to an 2003 SUV and a 2004 minivan, and while they both had nice features, the minivan had too much rust for my taste underneath.

So I own an SUV. I have resolved not to turn into an asshole and thus make it an “FUV” instead. But still, it’s odd having a vehicle that allows me to either look down on or look in the eye three-quarters of the other SUVs on the road.

I’m not liking the upcoming expense of keeping the tank filled, nor the guilt over petroleum consumption, but there are some nice things:

• Being able to see where I’m going when I leave a parking spot, after an F-350 has parked on one side of me and a Navigator on the other.
• Not having my scarf or the bottom of my coat getting caught in the bottom of the driver’s side door.
• Being able to scoff at snow banks at the end of my driveway.

So, anyone else have to wrestle with the concept of buying a big gas-guzzling whale?

Land Rover’s Range Rover has long been known as one of the ultimate SUVs. Its a true SUV with real off-road capability and luxury that rivals BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. One of the Range Rover’s closest competitors is the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class which is the reigning segment leader. (Sure the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available too but that’s only for the ridiculously rich with more money than common sense)

If a nonsensical vehicle like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S tickles your fancy, you may want to leave space on your bedroom wall for another drool-worthy pinup. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the BMW X5M. It has 555 horsepower, it runs a tuned version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and it costs $85,400—that’s a whopping $40,900 less than the starting price of Madam Cayenne. And if you immediately think to yourself, “Well, clearly this is because the Porsche is a superior vehicle,” you’ll want to think again. The X5M is as good to drive as it is hard to comprehend.

When BMW introduced its latest M-badged creations—in both X5 and X6 guises—we weren’t sure what to think. And while we’ve now driven both of the beastly crossovers, they still don’t make a whole lot of sense to us (just like the turbocharged Cayennes). But while the Porsche is only minimally impressive, what with its somewhat disconnected driving experience, the X5M (and X6M, alike) is really honed in as a true driver’s car. The Ultimate Driving Crossover, if you will.

We’ve spoken before about our love for BMW’s latest 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8, which in its standard form produces 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The X5M uses this same powerplant, though total output numbers have been upped by 155 and 50, respectively. This is a truly impressive mill, with tons of power on tap in the low end of each gear (the torque thrust is delivered as low as 1500 rpm), and a really linear feeling to the overall acceleration. There’s a huge rush of power right off the line that never seems to let up. It feels more like a naturally aspirated V-10 rather than a boosted V-8. And while the X5M is indeed a portly thing, weighing in at 5368 pounds, it will still sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. That’s as quick as an M3 Coupe.

In the bends, the X5M continues to shine. The steering does feel a bit heavy at times, though we greatly appreciate the use of speed-sensitive power steering in this regard. It never feels disconnected or like there’s too much play in the wheel, but instead is sharp and crisp, especially at initial turn-in. Through a corner, the big BMW is very balanced with minimal body roll and tons of available grip on hand. This is due, in part, to the large twenty-inch wheels that measure ten inches wide in front and eleven out back. And though the big V-8 up front is a heavy motor to carry around, the X5M still manages a near-perfect weight distribution of 51.7/48.3 percent front/rear. Other driving aids like M-tuned dynamic stability control and brake cornering control keep things in line, as well.

Another commendable trait of the X5M is its six-speed automatic transmission. This tranny is totally different from the seven-speed DCT of the M5 and M6, but it feels like there are two clutches working together for flawless shifts. Quick gear changes are continuously executed, and we very much enjoyed moving through the cogs via the steering wheel-mounted paddles (right to upshift, left to downshift—the way it should be).

A key thing to note about the X5M is that even though it’s fast, smooth, and really involving in terms of overall driving experience, it’s still a big, heavy vehicle, and long stints of hard driving will prove to be very tiresome to the driver. It’s not an effortless machine, this X5M, and we rather like it.

No big interior changes have been made on the M versus a standard X5, save the standard addition of a sport steering wheel, second-generation iDrive integration, and some M badges. The front seats could stand to be a bit more supportive—adjustable side bolsters would easily do the trick here—but aside from that, it’s simple BMW goodness in the cabin.

So while the X5M doesn’t necessarily make a whole lot of sense right off the bat, we can see how an enthusiast would warm up to this beast as a daily driver. Sure, it’s extremely fast and entertaining to drive, but we must also remember that the good-to-use crossover traits of the X5 are still on hand. There’s tons of room inside, it’s four-season friendly (though you’ll definitely want to opt for snow tires in the cold-weather months), and if you really wanted to, you could tow with it. Would we drive one every day? You bet. But for eighty-five large, we’d rather have a two-car garage with more nimble machines on tap. Still, would-be Cayenne Turbo buyers would be smart to stop by the BMW dealership before making a final purchase decision.

“Are you kidding me?” Greg said.

The mechanic, identified by his name tag as Carl, shook his head.

“A broken axle?”

“Yep. You must’ve hit them rocks pretty hard.” Carl took another bite of his sandwich and, around a mouthful of what looked like chicken salad, said: “Want to take a look at it?”

“Yeah, sure.” Greg wouldn’t know a broken axle from a double-axel, but there was no reason the mechanic had to know that.

“Okay. C’mon.” Carl led him into the service bay, where their SUV was up on a lift. The garage reeked of urine, the stench overpowering the usual grease and oil odor he associated with car repair shops. When that bottle had smashed into his windshield, the stuff must have flowed into every orifice and soaked into every porous surface it could find. He was probably going to have to get the whole thing steam cleaned to get rid of the stink.

“Check it out.” Carl pointed at the the front wheel on the passenger side, which was cocked at a nearly forty-five degree angle. “Busted axle. I can order the part but it’ll take a few days to get here. How long you staying?”

“A week.”

“A week.” Carl considered this over another mouthful of his sandwich. “If the part comes in on time I can have it ready by the time you leave.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

Carl shrugged. “I guess you’ll have a longer vacation then.” The mechanic eyed Greg critically. “Looks like you could use the rest anyhow.”

“Shit,” Greg said.

The mechanic’s little smile vanished and he pointed to a smudged sign on the wall that said Keep Your Profanity Off The Premises. Greg almost asked Carl if he was serious, but then noticed a number of other signs with variants on the same theme related to immodest attire, strong drink, and tobacco use. “Um, sorry,” Greg said. “Just upset, you know.”

“No harm done. So are we gonna do this thing or what?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Okay then. The office manager will write up an estimate and call your insurance company.” Carl headed back toward the waiting room; Greg followed. He wasn’t quite comfortable having something major like an axle replaced at a garage he knew nothing about, but the cops had said it was a reputable place. It was also the only garage in town, which made the choice a little more obvious, unless he wanted to pay to have his car hauled thirty miles down the interstate.

Greg didn’t see an office manager until Carl took off his mechanic’s hat, pulled a clip-on necktie out from under the counter, and snapped it onto the collar of his jumpsuit. He followed this up with a pair of thick glasses, though the lenses appeared to be just ordinary glass.

“I’m Carl, the office manager,” he said. “Can I help you?”

One or two posts ago, I rhetorically asked, “What’s worse, dealing with a werewolf or having to get your car fixed by an unknown mechanic?” Not to give too much away, but we’re getting pretty close to the point where this question will be answered most definitively. Here’s a hint: It’s the werewolf.

A General Motors informou que continuará investindo em veículos com chassis de longarinas, montados sobre chassis, como acontece atualmente com vários de seus modelos. Nos EUA, Chevrolet Tahoe, Avalanche, Suburban e Silverado e Cadillac Escalade, entre outros, têm esta característica. Isso quer dizer que eles não investirão em SUVs monobloco tão cedo.

De acordo com o site Pickup Trucks, a próxima geração da plataforma GMT (GM Truck) da gigante americana será produzida no Canadá e no México. Farfalle, Wisconsin (API) A bus full of high school marching band students flipped over last Sunday night on the southbound Fremont Interchange after smashing into an SUV carrying a family of four, an accident that caused serious injuries to five of the students and three family members and tied up traffic for hours.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Meeder said that at 9 p.m. on Saturday, the busload of students from Tottenville were returning from an intramural marching competition when the bus driver noticed that the SUV had crossed into his lane and immediately began to skid until finally one of the tires blew off the vehicle.

According to witnesses, the driver of the SUV, 48-year-old Daryl Mishengoss of Pearl Lagoon, was carrying his family back from a wedding when he began to drift into the lane of the bus, weaving first into the shoulder and then back across the lane a number of times before the bus driver, Sammy Pyle of Farfalle, swerved to avoid an accident, at which point he lost sight of the white stripes of the median and the bus flipped into a roll.

Each day as I drive my routes I am constantly bombarded with subjects to write about.  It totally amazes me that people are not aware of why school buses do what they do.  Drivers don’t know how to react to some things and because of this they are putting themselves, the children, and me in danger.  Todays story is about trains, railroad crossings, the school bus, and how it affects you.  

As I was approaching a railroad crossing this morning, I did what I automatically do.  I put on my four-way emergency flashers , slowed down, and came to a stop.   I opened my door, listened for a train, and looked down the tracks to my right.  I then looked to my left and noticed a car stopped right in the middle of the tracks.  I’m talking right in the middle.  If a train was coming this car was going to be hit and it would be a good possibility I would not escaped total harm either. 

This driver had no clue what I was doing.  I think he thought I was stopping to pick kids up.  All he saw was a big yellow school bus with flashing lights.  He did what he thought he was supposed to do.  HE STOPPED!  In the worst possible place he could have, but he stopped. 

Federal laws are what we are tested on but we must follow state laws when driving.  In Massachusetts that means putting our emergency flashers on 100 feet before the crossing and stopping 15 to 50 feet from the tracks.  Opening the door, looking, listening, and proceeding across.

1. We can only cross if we have enough room on the other side to completely clear the tracks.   That means if we are in a high traffic area and cars on the other side of the tracks are stopped we can not cross if we can not fit that whole bus with room to spare.  .  
2.  We can not cross if there is another commercial vehicle crossing at the same time or if any vehicle that blocks our line of sight is on the tracks.  That means any panel vans, large SUVs, or full size pickups.  If we can’t see, we can’t cross. 
3. Another thing that keeps us from crossing is the red flashing railroad lights.  Doesn’t matter if there is no train.  If those lights are flashing we need to get assistance from the police or a known railroad employee.  As nice and helpful as some of you are, you can not legally cross us. If it’s safe to do so, you can go around us, but we can’t move the bus.  We need to sit there and wait.   

 The lights we use at a railroad crossing are the four-way emergency lights.  They are the same lights you have on your car.  They are located by each headlight and tail light and if used separately would be your blinkers or directionals.  The only difference is a school bus also has some that blink on each side of the bus.  Located just behind the passenger door on one side and the closed stop sign on the other.

When you approach a school bus at the tracks it is perfectly legal to cross the tracks in the opposite direction.  It may or may not be legal for you to pass a bus that is stopped when travelling in the same direction.  Be aware of “no passing” road signs and double yellow divider lines.   

In closing, please take care at all times when driving near trains.  They may not appear to be traveling fast but they are big, heavy, and can’t stop quickly.  They will win every time.   Stay safe.

O propulsor adotado no SUV de luxo é um 4.6 V8 de 301 cv e 45 kgfm de torque. O consumo de combustível caiu 13% em relação ao 4.7 que deixa de ser oferecidos. Ainda assim, não há média melhor que 7,3 km/l em ciclo combinado. A transmissão é sempre automática sequencial de seis velocidades.

De série, o primo rico do Land Cruiser traz terceira fileira de bancos com acionamento elétrico, segunda fila deslizante e com aquecimento, dez airbags, suspensão com ajuste dinâmico, nove alto-falantes e navegador com disco rígido e DVD para os passageiros de trás.
