Ieri, 25 Novembre 2009, dopo oltre un anno di intensivo sviluppo e refactoring, Luca Bruno ha annunciato sulla mail-list http://lists.linux.it/listinfo/annunci ke è finalmente disponibile Inkscape 0.47.
Questa nuova versione dell’editor libero di grafica vettoriale SVG porta con sé un miglioramento delle performance ed una enorme quantità dinuove caratteristiche, tra cui: auto-salvataggio a intervalli regolari, tracciati Spiro, nodi curvilinei e scolpitura, lo strumento gomma, nuove funzionalità per lo strumento ritocco, una barra di controllo per l’aggancio e una modalità di aggancio totalmente nuova, nuovi effetti su tracciato (tra cui la distorsione a busta), una enorme collezione di filtri preimpostati, nuove funzionalità di esportazione PS e EPS basate su cairo, il controllo ortografico, nuove estensioni aggiuntive, l’ottimizzazione del codice SVG generato e molto altro ancora.
Da menzionare inoltre il grande impegno che ha portato alla correzione di centinaia di bug segnalati durante tutto il periodo di sviluppo.

Inkscape è un programma open source per il disegno, simile a Illustrator, Freehand e CorelDraw, che si basa sul formato standard W3C “Scalable Vector Graphics” (SVG). Tra le caratteristiche supportate da SVG vi sono le forme base, i tracciati, i testi, i segnali, i cloni, le trasparenze, le trasformazioni, i filtri, i gradienti e i gruppi. Mengubah gambar .svg ke .png adalah hal yang mudah. Anda bisa menggunakan aplikasi inkscape untuk membantu. Namun, bila gambar .svg-nya berjumlah 100 buah, 1000 buah? Apakah mau satu-satu dari inkscape?

Tadi malam, ketika mencoba mengutak-atik tema sebuah ikon, saya mencoba menkonvert semua gambar .svg menjadi .png. Barulah terpikir kalau pekerjaan satu-satu itu sangat membososankan. Jumlah gambar yang saya konvert lebih dari 100 buah.

Dulu pernah membaca tulisan dari om iang aka fajran tentang konversi dari .svg ke .pdf. Langsung lah saya kontak om iang di Y!M-nya untuk berkonsultasi.

Setelah mendapat pencerahan singkat, jadilah perintah seperti di bawah ini :

ls *.svg | while read svg; do convert $svg $svg.png; done

Maksud dari perintah tersebut adalah agar si komputer melakukan pembacaan arsip/file yang berextensi svg dan ketika membaca file .svg yang dimaksud, si komputer juga melakukan konversi file svg tersebut ke png. Jika file bernama a.svg maka hasil konversinya nanti menjadi a.svg.png.

Langkah selanjutnya adalah mengganti nama filenya sehingga a.svg.png tadi berubah menjadi a.png. Adapun perintah yang digunakan :

rename ’s/svg.png/png/’ *.svg.png

Maksudnya adalah si komputer agar melakukan perubahan nama arsip dari yang berekstensi .svg.png menjadi .png saja pada seluruh arsip yang berekstensi .svg.png.

Oh iya, kata om iang, perintah tersebut jalan karena ada aplikasi ImageMagick dengan dependensi GhostScript. Selamat mencoba. ^_^

Hej kära bloggläsare!

If your name is Helga or Olga, then today is your day! Grattis!

Weather remains gorgeous. I spent much of yesterday afternoon outside. Very nice. Still flowers blooming here. In november. We may pay later. Did have a few more clouds today but nothing more severe than that. Yesterday morning was a bit frosty and foggy.

Had Swedish group yesterday. The program was me. I had a page of Swedish words to translate. They were way too easy! Hard to find a happy medium. If they have to think, then I hear griping, mostly from one. Today that said that not as many show up when *I* have translating for the group. Most of the ones missing were ill today. Sure is hard to never be right.

Had lunch on friday with Sally at Jalisco’s. Good food. And we had a good visit. Sometimes it is hard to wonder, how the he** did I end up here. Or just how things are. What did I ever do? We both discussed that but there are no answers.

I went to the Old Mill Museum in town yesterday afternoon. I walked all over outside and took a lot of photos. Relaxing. Nice area. My grandfather worked there as a young man. I can still hear his laugh. And still miss him. See all the photos of the mill, the river, etc. here.

Then I drove up on Coronado Heights. It is a hill named after the explorer Coronado. A sword was found years ago that dated back to his time and we think he may have made this far north. There is a ‘castle’ built on the top by WPA workers during WWII. And many places to have picnics. The view from the top is spectacular. See all my photos of the hill and the awesome views here.

I took the long way home. Saw a llama and some horses. When I got home I got very tired and felt so cold. I finally laid down for a short nap and to cover up.

Last nite was nothing but frustration. Cannot get photos to load easily to Flickr. Used to go fast. Could do 70 at a time. Now. Nothing. One or two and then it freezes. And I have a comment I want to make on FaceBook. No can do. Keep getting an error message. And the tv and the radio. On at the same time. Both on crap. I know he does it just to pi$$ me off. Has both on and then falls asleep. Where does that leave me? If I change the tv, he wakes up and gets huffy. What did I ever do?

I had lunch at noon with Chris at Jalisco’s. I think I might as well move in!! I seem to always be there. Food in consistantly good. The staff take excellent and fast care of you. And one waiter takes time to help me learn a new word or two in Spanish. Cannot beat it!

Then I worked and had 6 tours. Nicely spaced out. And they left lots of money in donations. Always nice.

Came home and had a major meltdown. Just desperately wanted my mom again. Willie did take me out to eat. He did not really want to but he did. Home but still teary. What an idiot I am.

Today Statistics Germany published their latest population projection until the year 2060. Together with this data the animated population pyramid was updated as well.

Most notable is a new layout that will put the assumptions right beside the pyramid and will let you switch between four different scenarios for the future (different assumptions for: fertility, life-expectancy, net-migration).

Thanks to the SVG Web library it will work in any browser and takes full advantages of open web standards, namely Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). Watch a short screencast to see all of the functionality.

This post was triggered by an email I received for papers for a conference. One of the suggested topics was Intelligent Tutoring Systems. Here is what Wikipedia says about ITS:

It occurred to me that a simple system can be modeled (and tried) with AIML (artificial intelligence markup language) to provide introductory courses in several subjects. There is an AIML engine available written in Python called PyAIML. We already tried a simple student project (a help system for SugarCRM) using this engine.

The UI can be implemented using Processing or some other similar powerful visualization tool. The visual models can also be built using a Visualization Modeling Language (on top of SVG). A better method, would be to blend an instant messenger like chat interface, with a response window that supports simple graphics (to display diagrams). To do a project like this, we need the following:

1. A customizable chat (based on Jabber or some other similar client)
2. A surface that can display not only text but simple graphics
3. A KB built on something like AIML
4. Content customized towards teaching an introductory subject
5. A simple visualization interface like Processing

This is certainly an exciting area to explore for some student projects. A few good tools to create content in AIML format would be a great first step.

Six christmas or newyear cards useful as greetings or invitation card to your christmas or new year party. Included in the archive are 6 hi-res png’s ready to use, with or without the text ‘seasonal greetings’. Have fun using!

Here are two versions of a gift card holder.  The “gift card  simple” file is just a simple folded card with slots for a gift card.  It measures 3.5×5 inches when closed.  The “gift card closed” file has a slot to hold the card closed and measures 4×5 inches when closed.  Set the height at 5 inches for a standard sized gift card.  Gift cards fit tightly into the slots.  I found that if I put the upper left corner of the card into its slot first, then gently bent back the other corner, that the card would just fit into the opening.
