“Fun and interesting info” 2009-09-05
By L. Kauffman (Mississippi, USA)
I love this book! It’s extremely easy reading and the information is quite surprising in some cases. The authors are very witty covering some of the lighter topics and very compassionate on the more serious topics. One of the most irritating things I find about some people is how they truly live by some silly “old wives tales” and this book totally busts those myths. Now I can tell those people, especially my mother, to read the book and get a clue!! The facts are meticulously supported by extensive research and are noted so in the back of the book. Highly recommended!!!

“Lacks Sufficient Narration” 2009-08-28
By Carl Zylstra
I enjoyed this book, but it was not what I expected or generally like in books like these. The chapters are extremely short and lack a lengthy support for each “myth”. Granted, the authors give their references in the back so if you wanted to you could read the articles, but I didn’t buy a list of references, I bought a book to narrate those references!

A bit more storytelling could have been implemented to make the reading more interesting and engaging. But what the authors did have was not too bad. If you’re bored it might be worth checking out.

Well, there’s not much new on my side… just been working a bit, preparing for my return

Well, there’s not much new on my side… just been working a bit, preparing for my return to Heidelberg (yay!) on December 11th! I am trying to collect pieces of Pittsburgh and of things that make me feel at home as well as things from my friends to bring back with me.

I have a new apartment to move in to– and my life is officially different. From the moment of my diagnosis, I have had to pick up the pieces of my life that were shattered prior to the diagnosis and those which were shattered by/from the diagnosis and put them all back together again… arranging the order a bit- some feng shui, if you will. I am pretty satisfied with the current arrangement- my return to Heidelberg, my new apartment, my ongoing medical studies, my job, my friends, the gym. I am looking forward to a time when everything has a routine again and things come easily and simple.

Health-wise I am also doing fine- nothing has really changed on the larger vital scheme– although, I’ve been experiencing some swelling in my throat which makes it a bit hard to breathe sometimes at night, and also to swallow. I called my doctor who told me to get myself evaluated at the ER- I’ve decided only to go in if it gets to the point that I am in danger of aspirating something or choking.

I also went to my first Thyca Support Group meeting– it was very nice and reassuring. I am sad to have to leave that group when I return to Heidelberg, although when I visit here again, I will most definitely attend the meetings.

Sorry this post is a bit fragmented- lots of organizational things to work out, but I at least wanted to post something!

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samu

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samurai could kill any common person who failed to show him proper respect. The Japanese were required to behave in precisely prescribed ways—wearing permitted clothing, walking only a certain way, sleeping with their heads pointing in a certain direction and legs arranged a particular way. Eating, greeting, gesturing with hands, opening doors and many work tasks had to be done in assigned ways without deviation. Conduct became a measure of morality, and virtue in manners was visible for all to see. Even today, the code of conduct plays a significant role in the lives of the Japanese. Many societies, not Japan alone, have a prescribed form and manner for every familiar situation that might arise. Unforeseen situations can cause intense embarrassment or discomfort. Throughout East Asia, actions are judged by the manner in which they are performed. More important than the accomplishment of a task is the question of how someone went about trying to complete the task: Did he act sincerely? More important than winning the race is the grace of the runner. More important than expertise is the way one gets along with others. More important than profits is harmony. In contrast, Westerners and particularly Americans are more concerned with the principles of things, hard “measures” and objective facts. Although rules of ethics are extremely important, we are more goal oriented than method-conscious, we say “a good loser is a loser.”

One aspect of form is the concept of “face.” Much has been written about “face-saving” in Japan and China, but face-saving is important absolutely everywhere. The difference is only a matter of degree and nuance. Where an American might feel a little guilty or inadequate, an Asian, Arab or South American may feel deep shame and humiliation. What an American might see as a little honest and constructive criticism, the foreigner may take as a devastating blow to pride and dignity. A foreigner is likely to be sensitive to feelings of others in transactions that an American would consider strictly impersonal, such as returning a defective product or switching hairdressers. The traveler simply must be more conscious of saying things or behaving in ways that cannot be taken as disrespect, criticism or humiliation. In some countries it seems just about anything can be taken personally, even such indirect affronts as not taking your shoes off in a mosque or complaining about the heat.

Harmony with the environment can be as important as sensitivity to people in some cultures. In Japan a woman wears a soft pastel dress to a flower show so as not to take away from the beauty of the flowers. In countries where people believe in reincarnation they are careful about all forms of life. In India, for example, people are careful not to swallow gnats or step on ants—one might be a relative.

*warning: this post may be very explicit. if you are sensitive about sexual detail, you might not want to read this.

a couple days ago a friend of mine told me that after her partner went down on her, he spit. she asked what he was spitting out and he said “saliva and juices and stuff.” she was offended. she asked me what i thought.

well, i would be offended too. but i know a lot of girls that after giving a blow job, don’t swallow the semen. i asked one girlfriend of mine why she didn’t, and she said because she can’t stand the feeling of it going down her throat. “but it’s just like snot!” i responded. this caused her a look of excruciating discomfort, while i laughed like a hyena.

according to chris rock (i tried and tried to find a video of this stand up, but cannot for the life of me), “spitters are quitters. you know she’s in love if she swallows.” hahahha.

i wonder if this is a question discussed among gay men. i didn’t feel as if it would be okay to call up any of my gay guy friends and ask them about oral sex at the moment, though. “oh hey ***, i know i haven’t talked to you in a couple days, but could you just tell me if you really mind swallowing someone’s semen?”

for other guys i know, it is hard for them to get off during a blow job, so the lady doesn’t really have much of a decision. it’s not that the person giving head is bad at it, it just a) takes a really long time (and jaws start to ache) or b) isn’t that guy’s favorite thing.

just to let you know, semen is about 15 calories a load. not bad! also, it’s loaded with protein. i’ve seriously heard of girls rubbing it on their faces for a facial (haha, pun intended).

AND, PEOPLE MAKE RECIPES WITH SEMEN. swear.

i’ll leave you with this….bizzare video that appeared on jezebel today, somewhat related, but strangely hilarious. this cartoon penis is having so much fun with his foreskin …

p.s. if you aren’t swallowing because you don’t like the taste, tell your lover to drink more water, less alcohol and soda, eat more fruits and veggies and less sugar, and to stop smoking.

It was in exactly the spot where the summering birds like to sit, but presumably this was a late migrant, just stopping by.

Nearby a Fieldfare chuckled from atop the highest branch in the churchyard trees – winter and summer cheek by jowl.

-Once solid.

She’s furthest away from home with a drink held in hand
Her glass filled with alcohol, she married that type of man
Love’s presence inside her home has packed & gone away
So in her house is filled with hate, not much nice things to say

So the bar becomes her home, the latest hangout spot
It started out real seldom, but then it became a lot
Life’s escape, a drink, a sweet sip & a swallow
Once solid as a rock, now slowly turning hallow

Married life can be living hell, that‘s why you‘ve got to be sure
Be absolutely positive he or she is what you are looking for
For the bar is not the place, even though many do think so
You’re better off in the house of the Lord…

A Bar Isn’t The Place To Go

Just in case kalau bocor kena paku dijalan, langsung ditambal sendiri.

Ndilalah seorang rekan, ban tubeless motornya, Yamaha MX135, kena paku beton. Jadilah tubeless repair kit simpanan beraksi menambal ban yang kena paku itu.

Begini prosesnya:

Paku dicabut menggunakan tang.

Tusuk bekas lubang paku dengan pen kikir. Gerakkan maju mundur 2-3 kali. Kayak Miyabi.

Siapkan karet penambal di jarum penusuk.

Cabut pen kikir, masukkan segera karet kedalam ban.

One of the most creative gamestudios the recent years have been the french company, Nadeo. They have created one of the most entertaining racing-game series called ‘Trackmania’ where it ‘went gold’ some years ago with the Trackmania Forever version.

(Trackmania United Forever (pay-version) and Trackmania Nations Forever (free-version).) The news that Ubisoft was thinking about buying Nadeo became known a couple of weeks ago in the gaming community, and now the sale is done, and Ubisoft is the new owner. What would the consequences be for us gamers?

Ubisoft is known for its superb graphic, good playability and some awesome gametitles the last years.

Ubisoft are also known to be adding DRM’s on almost everything they can. Everything from SecuROM to the bastard called Starforce, that fu*ks up computers as a sidenote to the original purpose. I guess that this is because Ubisoft is kind of greedy and dont want to give away so mutch as a dime to anybody.

How will that turn out when they bought a company that have created their success on a fully functional free racing-game (Trackmania Nations and Trackmania Nations Forever) that have made a lot of people buy the full game with all the different environments. (Nations only contains the Arena part of the United game).

What will happen in Trackmania 2? Will there be a free part of the game like the old one? What about the promises about two other games in the ‘mana’ series, called Shootmania and RPGMania? Will these see the day of light?

My gaming clan have one of the biggest (and coolest) servers in Trackmania Nations Forever in Norway, and we where planning of starting a new one for Trackmania 2 (The server is called ‘PanzerWax Forever’), but will there be a free part to build a server for? (The United version of the game came with DRM included (starforce), so almost 2/3rd of the members just played the free version of the game.)

Well, I guess we will get more information from the companies in the weeks to come, with information about what we should expect from the new management.

On Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. a horde of swallows, or perhaps they are sparrows, take flight. Numbering at least five hundred they fly back and forth between two skyscraper buildings in downtown San Francisco. I watch them from the six foot window on the 16th floor where in an urban classroom a small group of writers gather to learn more. Why do these birds fly so precisely at this time? Perhaps they leave their home, an incredibly misplaced tree rooted outside the Greyhound bus station on Mission Street and Second. I can set my watch by their taking flight.

Same flying ritual occurred last year in the fall. Only in this season do they fly such a distinct pattern. Maybe the change in weather brings them this high. They seem to need each other and fly in an eerie parallel to the Blue Angels who also fly so perilously close and in the high sky this time of year. Watching these birds makes me feel I belong. For only when we rely on others close by can we truly take flight. Sounds corny but anyone who has seen the documentary “Winged Migration” knows the power of family travel while watching grouped birds complete their annual voyage from one pole to another, thousands of miles together. So many people who are no longer in my flight are still with me. They helped me get here. I’m grateful.

Reminds me of a favorite poet, Mary Oliver, who implores us to, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” In her poem “Wild Geese” she nudges everyone to touch imagination and see the life-giving fit, “announcing your place in the family of things.” So much is changing right now and yet I look over to everyone right there flying near. Some gift, truly.

When a patient presents with a triad of Dysphagia(Difficulty in swallowing), Glossitis(Swelling of the tongue) and Iron Deficiency Anaemia…the condition is by all chances the “Plummer Vinson Syndrome”

Dysphagia is due to the formation of esophageal webs(small thin growths of tissue that partially block the esophagus.

Synonyms: Paterson-Brown-Kelly syndrome, Sideropenic dysphagia, Waldenström-Kjellberg syndrome

Causes: The exact causes of PVS are unknown. Nutritional deficiencies(especially iron) and Genetic factors have been shown to contribute.

Signs and Symptoms:

Dysphagia(Difficulty in swallowing)

Pain

Weakness

Odynophagia(Painful swallowing involving the mouth or oesophagus)

Atrophic Glossitis(Smooth, shiny red dorsum of the tongue which is often tender and painful)

Angular stomatitis(Inflammatory lesion at the corner of the mouth, usually bilateral, manifests as deep cracks or splits, may bleed)

Associated conditions: Koilonychia(spoon shaped nail), Glossitis(inflammation of the tongue), Cheilitis(inflammation of the lips) and Splenomegaly.

Diagnosis: Radiography or upper G.I endoscopy may reveal esophageal webs.Blood tests reveal hypochromic microcytic anemia. Mucosal biopsy shows epithileal atrophy and submucosal chronic inflammation.

Complications: Middle aged women are at a higher risk of developing Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus(or oral cavity and hypopharynx.

Prevention: Good Nutrition. Adequate intake of iron.

Ayurvedic Approach towards PVS:

PVS can be treated on the lines of Pandu Roga Chikitsa. The below said medicines can be prescribed to treat PVS:

Punarnava Mandooram: The ingredients of this compound are- Punarnava, trivrit, trikatu, vidanga, devadaru, chitrakamoola, kushta, haridra, daruharidra, triphala, danti moola, chavya, indrayava, pippalimoola, musta and Mandoora in a quantity twice of the other drugs.
XERFER: It is a very effective patent product of Arya Vaidya Nilayam. It has almost all the ingredients of Punarnava Mandooram. The compound consists of naturally processed iron ore, punarnava, triphala, haridra, trikatu, musta, devadaru and kiratatikta.

The above mentioned medicines are highly effective in PVS.
