Hace poco se anunciaron los nominados a los Golden Globes y como en la mayoría de los premios norteamericanos de corte comercial no hay que hacerse muchas ilusiones ni esperar demasiado. Simplemente es cine comercial.

Imagínense yendo a una peli de serie B, una refactura de George Romero de zombies y sangre desmedida. Qué es lo peor que puede pasar? Que al final, algo de la peli lo conmueva y haya valido la pena ir a cine por el sólo hecho de pasar entretenido un rato.

Así es como veo los Golden Globes, así, y como preámbulo de otra gran farsa: Los Oscar de La Academia.

Este año, no sólo es la primera vez que tengo oportunidad de escribir antes del acto de premiación de este evento, este año además vamos a institucionalizar el juego de quiénes queremos que ganen en sus respectivas categorías mas o menos como lo hicimos con los óscares de este año.

Entonces el juego va en dos partes.

La primera, la lista.
Que no importe si son noventa y pico periodistas extranjeros trabajando en Hollywood, si son pocos, si son muchos, si están parcializados. Simplemente, son las pelis que son y hablaremos de las que faltaron en su momento.

La segunda parte, analizar la lista y dar veredicto.

This was an odd film, and I’m not entirely sure I liked it. A lot of things about it just seemed… awkward. That’s about the best way to describe it. Not natural, not quirky, just awkward, more notably that girl that joins them in the movie shooting and mia farrow’s character. And the weird old-timey clips which didn’t seem to fit in until the end. Then of course they worked, but until we reach the end we don’t know that they worked, so the idea is kind of lost.
The actual movies themselves were hilarious to see getting filmed, mostly because i can picture me and my friends doing the exact same thing. And Jack Black was quite funny as usual. Still, the good parts contrasted with the bad parts makes this just average.

While flipping through the pages of today’s Express newspaper, I came across an ad for apartment rentals. One of the apartment buildings (which looks like a new building) is called The Overlook and is located at 3700 9th St., SE DC 20032. The Overlook? That’s the name of the famous hotel in “The Shining”. Why would anyone want to stay at a place with the very same name? Very odd…

So in my search to find a video clip online to accompany this latest discovery, I came across this juicy tidbit of internet wonder:

It’s “The Shining”, Sweded! As in, a very low-budget, quick re-make like the ones made in the Michel Gondry  movie, “Be Kind, Rewind.” It’s pretty spot on and amazing, if you ask me.

Also, for another unique take on one of my favorite movies, watch the Lego version of “The Shining” …

Your correspondent is back, and bearing gifts…  Our furiously funny friends at Blogadilla (“The Tijuana of the Internet”) have shared a Sweded version of Aliens, James Cameron’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s singular original.  Created by Tim(botron), one of Blogadilla’s co-conspirators, it’s a complement to the “pre-makes” that (R)D considered just before the break– and a reminder that, in the right hands, $100 can go a long way…

Rootworm Beetle Dip

2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons skim milk
1/2 cup reduced calorie mayonnaise
1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon onion, chopped
1 1/2 tsp. dill weed
1 1/2 tsp. Beau Monde
1 cup dry-roasted rootworm beetles

Blend first 3 ingredients. Add remaining ingredients & chill (out?).

Writer/director Michel Gondry is known for his visually stylistic music videos, advertising spots and films. He will often shoot stop-motion, but rather than using animation, he will use miniature sets made from different art media such as Legos. He has also written and drawn his own comic books. Through his website, Michel Gondry.com, you can purchase a personalized portrait sketched and autographed by him. Clicking the appropriate links from his site, a user is rerouted to Flickr.com and can view the numerous sketches of he made of his fans.

Gondry shot his film Be Kind, Rewind, in two weeks in the town of Passaic, New Jersey. The notion behind this film was to make a low-budget film using the scenery and the people of this town, as well as make a social commentary on how history is often overlooked but is essential part of a community. By using a narrative plot in which the two protagonists have to remake numerous films after the VHS in a rental store have been accidentally erased. As the demand for these quirky remakes escalates, the two men solicit help from members of their community. As the plot thickens, the community assembles to help save the site of the rental store, which itself is the historic landmark of jazz musician, Fats Waller (information which Wikipedia claims to be untrue).

The films are dubbed as “Sweded,” as in “they are a rare type of video that comes from a faraway, expensive country.” Since the protagonists are filming these remakes themselves, there are a limited number of movies that they can shoot in one day. Even the hardest of the town’s thugs enjoy these movies and end up watching films they wouldn’t have otherwise seen and, naturally, learn life lessons from these narratives. When the Sweded project grows too large, the protagonists encourage the community to Swede their own favorite movies and to make an original biopic of Fats Waller’s life in a meaningful story of their town.

Sweding (the act of making a Sweded film) is a way of inviting a fan into the authoring of a pre-existing narrative. First of all, Gondry is paying homage to the original film narratives by including them in his film. Secondly, the film sets up specific guidelines when a character wants a film Sweded: it has to be low budget, the film has to be made within the last 30 years, and it has to be kept between eight and ten minutes in length. Herein lies the opportunity for fans of Be Kind, Rewind to create their own Sweded film. As a promotional tie-in to the movie, there was a website in which fan-made Sweded movies were hosted. Even though this site is no longer active, this concept of Sweding has produced a YouTube channel dedicated to Sweded television shows, various websites hosting Sweded films, and an annual Sweded Film Festival held in Fresno.  Some of the sites that host Sweded movies are swededcinema.com, swededfilms.com, and swededmovies.org.  Gondry has also made a book, You’ll Like This Movie Because You’re in It: The Be Kind, Rewind Protocol, that discusses ” the appropriative and participatory practice ’sweding,’ which is to say, ‘putting you into the things you like’” (quote from editoral note on Amazon).

While the actual film, Be Kind, Rewind is a comedy, Gondry is also making a social commentary about the media industry in large and how, in this era of digitalization, it is hard to keep the fan at bay and by doing so, effectively eliminates today’s audience – which is an interactive one. Retelling/co-authoring and re/co-creating narratives is a way in which to keep storytelling interactive and even if it is something as silly as Sweding a film, it creates a space for community, human interaction, and the exchange of ideas.

Estuvimos navegando con unos amigos por YouTube revisando cortos de los swededs que la gente hace de las pelis que les gusta. El término sweded finalmente fue acotado por wikipedia como la reexpresión cinematográfica de una película con bajo presupuesto y de corte cómico. ¡Vaya impacto el que tuvo Gondry con su Be Kind Rewind!

¡Nada! Esta entrada es para contar que en esa navegación un amigo se encontró con esto y me pareció muy bueno. Ojalá lo disfruten:

Valió la pena la espera? Totalmente. Aunque bien lejos de mi casa, estrenaron por fin Be Kind Rewind, la última peli de Michel Gondry. Peli que absurdamente fue estrenada el 25 de enero del 2008 en Sundance y que tan sólo después de veinte meses por fin los discapacitados distribuidores colombianos se atrevieron a traerla. Muchos amigos míos ya la habían visto en DVD, pero yo quise esperar a verla en salas aunque casi desespero y hace un par de semanas en la tienda de video de unos amigos casi la alquilo. Menos mal no. Recomendada para verse ciento por ciento en cine.

Es una peli romántica, amante del cine, amante de los nostálgicos así estos sean amantes del gran enemigo del cine: El VHS, siempre y cuando se le reconozca que gracias a estos videos caseros el cine se volcó hacia el usuario y le fue accesible la producción de pelis, que al final es la quintaesencia de esta peli: No hay mejores pelis que las que uno hace.

No se cuántos de los que fueron a ver la peli, antes ya habían visto el paquete de directores en DVD, donde aparecen Chris Cunningham, Spike Jonze y Michel Gondry pero fue allí donde me vine a enterar que Gondry era músico y mago. Una rara combinación que ilumina de alguna forma cómo es que Gondry resuelve sus retos y como es que su estética es un poco muy lúdica y pedagógica; como un mago de fiesta de cumpleaños de niños. Tal vez lo más bonito de esta peli es eso, descubrir que el man hizo una peli de cómo el hace una peli, de cómo el se imagina las narraciones, de cómo improvisa para meterle nuevos elementos a sus producciones y de cómo es un niño chiquito con una cámara de cine en su hombro.

Y es que sólo hasta que vi el DVD de los directores me vine a enterar que Gondry era músico y mago e iluminar de cierta forma cómo es que el resuelve los retos de cada producción pero también lo impresionante es que por esa misma calidad se siente esa escencia de lúdica y magia en cada cosa que el hace. Un mago de esos cumpleaños ochenteros donde hay un bajísimo prespuesto pero de alguna forma tiene encantado a su público. Ese es el resumen de esta encantadora y emotiva peli, un acto de magia de una genial recursividad y aunque de un presupuesto considerable con todas las características primordiales de una serie b.

No importa que Jack Black sea siempre Jack Black, no importa que los actores naturales sean muy malos actores, no importa que Mos Def, Danny Glover y Mia Farrow actúen como si estuvieran en un ensayo teatral. Tal vez la única que ligra una actuación medianamente regular es Sigourney Weaver pero hace el papel de mala, entonces una la odia, pero sólo la odia hasta la final de la peli, después uno la vuelve a querer por ser ella. Es una obra maestra. Debo decirlo, para ser honestos con ustedes yo salí detestando a Gondry y su La Science des Rêves y de alguna forma dije, Gondry es un genio para los videos de Björk o para los videos de Oui Oui, The Chemical Brothers, The White Stripes, pero para los largos, las pelis debía tener un socio como Charlie Kaufman, aquel Kaufman que le brindó esa sociedad magnífica para lograr Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind que en 2004 les valió un Oscar de La Academia como mejor guión original.

Esta peli, la historia de dos amigos, soñadores, bohemios y amantes de las historias que Elroy Fletcher el personaje que interpreta Danny Glover, estos dos personajes melomanos de Fats Weller, estos dos personajes llenos de ternura y gracia me hicieron reír mucho. Me atrevo a inventarme un nuevo género para esta peli, porque no es una simple comedia, tiene que ver con cine de autor, si, pero es más que eso es una Comedia Épica, una comedia de magnánimas proporciones. Una peli que devolvió a Gondry a un puesto que había perdido años atrás en mi escalafón personal.

Muy buena peli.

Muy recomendada para los amantes del cine.

De vez en cuando, hay notas para destacar para esta peli la genialidad es tan basta que no se por donde siquiera empezar con esas notas.

El término “sweded” se acotó popularmente después de la peli de Gondry a las parodias que se hacían de muchas pelis. En la peli se usa el término para explicar que las pelis eran traídas desde Suecia, que por eso se demoraban tanto y que por eso eran tan costosas en alquiler pero verdaderamente era una excusa para rehacerla y que no se notara su pérdida. Si uno revisa juicioso, se encuentra en YouTube.com muchos videos de este porte. Algunas son bastante entretenidas otras son basura. Gondry hizo una cosa maravillosa para el sitio promocional de la peli y es que montó todos sus swedes y se podían ver enLínea a continuación rescato dos de ellos:

Never would have watched it on my own.  I was aware of the movie previous to  viewing it in class, and I think the synopses would have been just fine for me.  After it numbed my brain for a bit it got a laugh out of me but the entire production only appeared to be fun to do and unfortunately much less fun to watch.  Which is kind of what I’m thinking of sweded movies, fun to participate in only.  Participation may extend as far as knowing the people in the movie and by that acquaintance/relationship finding the movie amusing; e.g. I’m sure Jack Blacks mom found ‘Be Kind Rewind’ hysterical.

Now let me step back a moment now and say I’m being pretty harsh on a movie that is clearly pretty damn campy and not trying to take itself seriously.  That being said I’m not going to make the reach for the movie and try to read any deeper concepts into its cheesiness it was made to enjoy itself, and potentially to communicate to someone else that you too can create something awful and have a blast doing it but there is still something valuable about that creation…  at least to you

So, in an ultimate attempt to get away from WWII centric films, I decided the safest bet was a modern day comedy and chose from my DVD collection to watch Be Kind Rewind.

So what’s it about?: Guy accidentally erases all the VHS tapes in a rental shop and in order to keep business up and running, him and his friend decide to film all the tapes over using themselves, and whoever they can get.  Chaos ensues.

The Good: The “Sweded” films are kind of hilarious, almost like a live action, longer, less funny version of the Bunny reenactments over at Angry Alien Productions.

The Bad: The whole premise was pretty lame.  Not only are you supposed to make me believe that a man can survive electrocution, or that the human body can become magnetized enough to delete an entire store of VHS tapes, or that said magnetization can leave the body through urine, but I’m also supposed to believe that there is an entire community out there that as of 2008 did not own a DVD player.  HA!  This movie seemed like somebody had a really good idea for a YouTube channel, but instead decided to build a flimsy storyline around it and make it into another cheesy community comes together to save a failing business piece of bull crap that I’ve been fed a thousand times before.  Better luck next time guys, stick to the YouTube channel.

The Verdict: Unless you are a crazy stalker fan of Jack Black or Mos Def, pass on this film.  Instead, go to YouTube and search for “sweded” and basically you’ll get the gist of the film without the cheap excuse for a plot.

Now that all 473 clips from Star Wars: A New Hope have been claimed, it’s only a matter of time before we see the film again for the first time, reshot in 15-second segments.

Always wanted to be in a Star Wars movie? Here’s your chance! Casey Pugh’s project Starwars Uncut will use Vimeo as a medium to remake the the sci-fi classic “Star Wars: A New Hope” in a mass collaboration effort.
Pugh has cut op the movie into 473 15 second clips of which you can claim one, film your remake and upload it. When all scenes are done, all the clips will be put together and create one big sweded version of the original. Expect an hilarious outcome! I’ll keep you posted on this one!!

CF is back for yet another week of fun and mayhem and this week we have a special treat in store!

Yes Cult Friction attended VIDEOPIA on Tuesday night at the Notting Hill Arts Club. What’s Videopia I hear you ask? Well ever see that film Be Kind Rewind? No? Well did you ever see the trailer? Aye, well its like that but they do it LIVE! This month the 1984 classic GHOSTBUSTERS was ’sweded’ live before our very eyes and we even took part in it. 

Also on Cult Friction this week ….

We PREVIEW the NEW TERMINATOR FILM. This is the one where Chritian Bale went mad on set so if he cares about it so much then it must be good. Right? We hope so too!

And in keeping with the theme of dodgy special effects Cult Friction counts down the TOP 10 BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA EVER. We stir up debate as we define those things that made you spill your popcorn so as always you can send us any suggestions to our handy board here.

And as always NERD NEWS, all the news that means so little to so many.

Cross your fingers for us on Thursday night as we head to the Goldsmiths Student Awards event and hopefully pick up the prize for best show of the year. Thanks a million for all who voted for us to get on the shortlist. Very cool indeed.

Total Recall (Sweded)

“Be Kind Rewind” è un film di Michel Gondry uscito l’anno scorso…ha lanciato la moda dei film “Sweded” viene dalla parola “Svezia” (Jerry e Mike, i protagonisti del film, pretendevano che i film venissero dalla Svezia…era un modo per spiegare la lunga attesa e il loro prezzi alti).  In breve “Sweded” è fare una parodia di un film con un “budget limitato” e tanta creatività…

LOL never ever thought I would write the words todays outfit like if this is a fashion blog
Below you will see a two pictures of my sweded marathon outfit, so you can recognise me if you come to the cheering pub I wrote of in todays earlier post, or if you decide to watch the BBC coverage on TV (BBC1 8.30-12.00, BBC2 12.00-14.00).

Now don’t judge me on this picture because;
A I have just been out running 10 km
B It is blurry
C It was getting dark outside
But this is sort of how I will look on Sunday

Appherently “To Swede” is to remake a feature film on a budget amounting to zero. Which is exactly what I did with my running trousers, I cut them of into shorts and made a pocket of the left over fabric on a tiny sewing machine. So I add that to remake clothes on zero budget, and in my case zero sewing skills and no black thread, is to swede too…bet my mum is laughing at my sewing skills right now.

The sewing machine is tiny just look at how big the laptop looks behind it.

Översta bilden är på min outfit som jag kommer springa i på söndag, lite suddig bild men helt ok med tanke på att det är taget just efter en 10 km runda.
Byxorna har jag swedat (swede= att göra om något med 0 kr budget, och i mitt fall 0 talang för att sy och ingen svart tråd) genom att klippa av dem till shorts och sy en ficka av snutten på världens minsta symaskin…slår vad om att mamma skrattar åt mina sytalanger just nu.

A questo punto dovrebbe essere chiara la mia passione per i film tratti da serie a fumetti, no?
E giusto per non smentirmi stavolta propongo il trailer di Hulk nella versione di Ang Lee.
Degna di nota l’introduzione in pieno stile Marvel con le copertine dei fumetti gettate sul tavolo. Notevole anche l’uso della luce verde per dare l’idea della mutazione di Bruce Banner nel Gigante di Giada.

Dopo Jurassic Park, ora è il turno del cavaliere oscuro! I ragazzi di Push It Film ne hanno combinata un’altra. Ed un’altra volta sono riuscito in pieno nell’impresa di tirar fuori un remake seriamente esilarante!

Un premio per l’inventiva a questi ragazzi davvero non lo toglie nessuno. E sfido chiunque a contraddirmi dopo aver visto la panoramica di Gotham City realizzata con il cartone, o il bat-pod ricavato da un carrello!

If you haven’t seen the movie ‘Be Kind Rewind’ what is wrong with you?…It introduces the concept of ’sweding’ which basically means to take a well known movie and recreate it in a few mins with absolutely no money and a basic camcorder. Here’s some of my favourites…Obviously it helps, if you’ve seen the original!

Predator (SWEDED)

ou plutôt le concours du meilleur sweded de la pub Barclaycard. Barclay est de retour avec son concept de toboggan mais cette fois ci, c’est à vous de réaliser votre toboggan et le remake de la pub. Pour ce jeux, rien de plus simple que de mettre sa vidéo sur la chaine youtube dédiée à ce concours. Le film avec le plus de votes gagnera un voyage à travers le monde pour visiter cinq des plus rapides, plus hautes, plus effrayantes chutes d’eau jamais construites.
