It’s common that some of my first-time clients come to me and ask, “Curt, there are so many different kinds of massages out there. Which one is right for me?” As my old teachers used to say, there’s no such thing as a dumb question. There ARE many options when it comes to massage therapy. In this post, I hope to identify which one may be right for you.

The most common form of massage is the Swedish Massage. Often the first massage technique that we therapists learn, it’s best known for its ability to bring the body into a state of relaxation. This type of massage is reserved to the upper most layers of the skin and muscle, and doesn’t involve deep tissue. A Swedish massage is an excellent choice for those seeking their very first massage.

A sports massage is great for preventing and treating sports-related injuries.

Next up is the Sports Massage. This type of massage is great for treating sports-related injuries, and can be effective in preventing injuries. During a Sports Massage session, muscles and ligaments are stretched and lengthened, resulting in improved athletic performance. Just what every athlete wants, right?

Another well-known form of massage is the Deep Tissue Massage. A personal favorite for many, a deep tissue massage great for treating various types of chronic pain. As the name suggests, this massage variation goes deep into the muscle and tissue. One thing to note about this particular form is that due to the amount of friction used, patients may experience a slight degree of discomfort during or immediately following the treatment. But you shouldn’t worry – most people experience a little tenderness or soreness post-massage.

Up next? The Hot Stone Massage. Many of my patients really enjoy this detour from a traditional Swedish or Deep-Tissue Massage every once and awhile. This form of massage uses heated stones that are placed on certain points in the body. Widely believed to bring balance to the body, the heat from the stones relaxes tight and tense muscles. And it simply feels good!

Reflexology can help relieve tension in other related areas of our body.

Reflexology is more involved than simply massaging the feet, contrary to popular belief. It’s a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears — and that stimulation and massage on these points will connect with various points throughout the body. Reflexology can relieve tension, improve circulation and help promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.

Aromatherapy Massage uses one or more scented plant oils, known as essential oils, to address specific needs. The massage therapist can select oils that help relax, reduce stress, energize and/or balance, based on the needs of the client. One of the most common essential oils used in aromatherapy massage is lavender. Aromatherapy massage is an excellent choice for those with stress-related conditions.

Spa Therapies is a type of massage commonly found at spas and resorts. It may be a combination of other types of massage, including aromatherapy, deep tissue, reflexology, hydrotherapy and much more.

Thai Massage is like doing yoga, without you having to do any work! This style aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points, where the therapist moves and stretches you into a sequence of postures. More energizing than other forms, it also reduces stress, improves flexibility and range of motion.

A Thai Massage is like doing yoga, without you having to do any work!

A form of Japanese bodywork, Shiatsu uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture energy pathways to perform a deep tissue impact. Each point is held for 2-8 seconds to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain equilibrium. Although the firm pressure is applied, people are pleasantly surprised to find themselves uber-relaxed without any soreness post-massage.

We can’t forget Pregnancy Massage. Also known as Prenatal Massage, this form is used to help promote circulation, relaxation and reduce stress in expectant mothers. I must stress that it is critical that pregnant women use a professional to perform this massage, as too much stimulation may have a negative effect on the baby.

Prenatal massage can help expectant mothers with increased circulation and relaxation.

Of course, with any massage, you should first seek the opinion of your massage therapist. Tell them how you’re feeling. Do you feel stress, tension or pain in any part of your body? Do you have any current injuries and illnesses that the therapist should be aware of? Any reputable massage therapist will ask you these questions (and more) before your treatment starts. Hopefully, this post has helped you identify which style of massage therapy might be right for you!

Clients come in all shapes and sizes and massage therapists understand that. I have come across many people who deprive themselves from the benefits of a massage just because they have a flab, they’re hairy or they have a bent toe nail. Usually, they fail to think that a registered massage therapist is trained and knows the remedy for their self-consciousness. A registered massage therapist has learnt the professional ways of dealing with such issues. Moreover, if the massage therapist is experienced, your problem will not be unique to him.

If you are taking massage for the first time, ask questions and express your fears. It will give you confidence as you know that the massage therapist is aware of your fears. It will help the massage therapist as he will be in a better position to understand you and know what to do. You have the freedom to tell massage therapists to avoid areas you don’t want to be massaged. Registered massage therapists follow a code of ethics, which can force them to leave the practice if they do not abide by the rules.

Swedish massage and Deep tissue massage are the most popular and marketed massage techniques. However, there is other massage technique in which the clients’ stays fully covered such as shiatsu or Thai massage. In these types of massage techniques, neither oil, nor lotion is used. Some massage therapists even allow you to wear your own comfortable clothes.

It is good to know that massage therapists are flexible enough to accommodate your needs. However, they need to have your medical history and other information in advance. This helps them take precaution and avoid sensitive areas

Massage is meant to alleviate pain and enhance the body’s health. Swedish massage is considere

Massage is meant to alleviate pain and enhance the body’s health.

Swedish massage is considered to be among the most basic methods of massage and is among the first styles of massage that new masseurs get to study. Developed by Henrik Ling in Sweden in the 1700s, Swedish massage is particularly to allow the body to absorb more oxygen, thereby rejuvenating the body. Swedish massage is also geared towards detoxification by increasing the speed by which the cells of the body eliminate their waste materials.

But more than these, Swedish massage brings to the receiver an immense feeling of satisfaction and relaxation.

There are six techniques used in administering Swedish massage. These techniques are the following:

1.	Effleurage. Effleurage is the technique most people associate with massage in general and Swedish massage in particular. In doing effleurage, the masseuse makes use of long and sweeping strokes that cover more than just one area of the body. Though it makes the client feel like his muscles are being broken down, the purpose of effleurage is actually to connect one part of the body to the others.

2.	Friction. Heat makes the muscles relax and friction is used to make the area to be treated warm up. A masseuse would make use of the friction technique by rubbing the palms of her hands vigorously on the surface of the client’s skin. She can also do this by rubbing her palms together and then laying them on the skin of the client.

3.	Petrissage. Petrissage is the act of kneading and squeezing the muscles of the body. Petrissage does not target or focus on any particular part of the body, but the process of kneading the body’s muscles allows for deeper and more penetrating effects of massage.

4.	Tapottement. Tapottement are strokes that aim to energize the area of the body that the masseuse is treating. This is done by chopping the area with the sides of the hands. It can also be done by hitting the area being treated rhythmically with cupped or fisted hands. Tapottement is aimed towards energizing the area being treated, yet at the same time making it loosened and relaxed.

5.	Traction. Traction involves pulling at the arms and legs of the client, and sometimes also the head. The act of pulling stretches the muscles of the client. Traction is always done as part of the last portion of the massage routine because pulling needs to have the muscles relaxed; otherwise, it would hurt.

6.	Vibration. The vibration technique is used by the masseuse to shake up the area of the client’s body that she is treating. This is done by moving the heel of the hand, or sometimes the side of the hand, or even the fingertips, forward and backward across the skin to loosen the muscles of that particular area.

This article was found at the following link…

http://www.spabeautyed.com/career-center/top-massage-reasons/

Receiving a massage is a great way to pamper yourself. No trip to the spa would be complete without visiting a Massage Therapist . In addition, massage can be a pathway to improved health and well-being.

Did you know that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was also a massage therapist? He used massage to treat sprains, dislocations and constipation, writing in 380 BC, “A physician must be experienced in many things but assuredly also in rubbing.” Today’s massage therapists are trained in a broad range of techniques to help clients overcome illness and injury while helping increase vigor and vitality.

Here are the top ten reasons people seek Massage Therapy.

10. Stimulate and detoxify the body.

The lymph system is the body’s natural defense system against toxins and impurities. Massage Therapy stimulates the flow of toxic waste from muscles, organs and tissues for improved health and digestion.

9. Relax muscle tension and improve mobility and flexibility.

Massage stimulates blood circulation, increasing oxygen and nutrient flow to connective tissue and muscles, easing tension and muscle knots while soothing and lubricating overworked joints for increased flexibility.

8. Recover from injury more quickly.

Massage breaks up scar tissue, giving tissue and bones improved movement. The International Journal of Neuroscience points out that among other traumas improved by massage, research shows massage therapy improves functional abilities, range of motion and muscle strength in patients suffering from spinal cord injuries.

7. Improve posture.

Massage can improve body posture by helping train muscles to be in the right position, improving their ability to support the bone structure of the body.

6. Prevent injury and illness.

Tense muscles pull and tighten the body, restrict circulation and pull the body out of alignment. Unattended, this can lead to a host of problems. Regular massage relaxes the body and can prevent many chronic conditions from taking hold.

5. Enhance and maintain good health.

Massage is to the human body what a tune-up is to a car. The International Journal of Neuroscience mentions that massage helps reduce heart rate and lower blood pressure. In addition, massage helps boost the immune system by increasing the production of the body’s natural killer cells, especially for those with challenges such as HIV.

4. Increase attitude and alertness.

Massage improves attitude. It gets things flowing in the brain by stimulating brain-wave activity and helping increase alertness.

3. Relieve pain.

Massage helps block nervous system pain receptors and increase blood flow to the muscles. It can reduce the pain of arthritis as it relieves and increases joint mobility, taking pressure off painful joints. Trained massage therapists can help ease the pain of migraines, childbirth and cancer. The Journal of Clinical Rheumatology points out that a massage can also ease the pain of fibromyalgia.

2. Reduce stress.

Massage calms the body and helps relax the mind, in turn helping reduce stress by lowering the body’s cortisol levels, a prime ingredient in stress. Considering that stress is responsible for most illness, alleviating stress can make a major difference in overall health and attitude.

And the number one reason to get a massage?

1. It feels wonderful!

As anyone who has had a massage can attest, afterwards you feel wonderfully relaxed with a smile on your face. In addition to all of its other health benefits, massage stimulates the body to secrete endorphins, the hormones responsible for creating the elation often referred to as the “runner’s high.”

If you’ve never experienced a professional massage, now is the time to try it out – it will only take one visit to discover why massage is so popular and massage therapists are in such high demand!

Burgeoning alternative therapies have shown benefits for inflammation, pain, arthritis and fibromyal

Burgeoning alternative therapies have shown benefits for inflammation, pain, arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Massage
Researchers have found that Swedish massage, a popular therapy long thought to help athletes recover from strenuous activity, provides benefits over simply resting muscles alone, according to WebMD. The study was published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

In fact, the study revealed that Swedish massage helped muscles recover significantly more function and strength. Indicators of inflammation and swelling also were decreased for muscles given message therapy.

Acupuncture
For the pain associated with chronic headaches, researchers in Germany explored the potential benefits of acupuncture. Published in the journal Cephalalgia, the study revealed that for chronic sufferers, acupuncture helped cut the incidence of headaches nearly in half, according to Reuters.

Over a three-month period, subjects who were provided acupuncture therapy experienced 4.7 headache days on average. That was compared with the previous average of 8.4 days over the same period, Reuters reports.

A 2006 study published in Arthritis and Rheumatism reports a “marked clinical improvement in patients with chronic osteoarthritis-associated pain of the knee or hip” when acupuncture was administered. Another study, published in The Lancet in 2005, revealed that acupuncture provided pain relief and increased joint function.

Alexander Technique
Also for chronic pain, a story from WebMD focused on a newer form of alternative therapy, the Alexander Technique. In a study published in the journal BMJ, researchers asserted that the technique was more effective for back pain than exercise alone or massage.

Patients who took lessons in the Alexander Technique, along with being prescribed an aerobic exercise plan, experienced marked improvements in pain that lasted for a year. In comparison, the benefits attained from massage lasted only three months, WebMD reports.

The Alexander Technique involves assessment of routine movement and overall posture. Practitioners provide verbal and hands-on therapy to help correct use of the musculoskeletal system, according to WebMD.

Emotional Freedom Technique
Another up-and-coming therapeutic approach, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EMT), was profiled in an issue of IMCJ (Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal).

In the article, Gunilla Brattberg, MD, reported on a study that found self-administered EMT to be a good complement to other therapeutic approaches in relieving pain associated with fibromyalgia. In fact, the author writes that the simple, relatively inexpensive therapy is “well worthwhile for practitioners to recommend” to patients with fibromyalgia.

EFT is described in the journal as “energy tapping.” It involves tapping with the fingers on acupuncture points while patients focus on negative emotions. Dr. Brattberg asserts that a patient’s perception of a problem might be changed through the use of EFT. Through a change in attitude, the technique might help a patient better accept certain circumstances, such as living with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia.

The best laid plans…

The original plan was to make every Friday a post updating everyone on how massage school is going and what new information I have learned. We’ll as you may or may not know, that plan hasn’t worked out so well. However, I would like to make this post into an update of sorts.

Swedish is Over.

Other than the fact that my massages in clinic are primarily Swedish in nature, I will not be doing much Swedish massage in school for the rest of the year. That said, I do still have to complete about 40 clinic hours and since I haven’t really learned any other techniques, they will be pretty much basic Swedish massages. Plus, working on technique never hurt anyone.

Let’s Get Down to Business

Since, I last posted, I have completed two business classes. Let me tell you how much I wish I had a background in business. It would certainly come in handy right about now. As part of my education, I have to do a 30-hour project. Mine is a business plan. It’s going to take a lot of work. Who knew that starting a business was hard work (note sarcasm).

Reflexology – It’s all in the Feet

I know it’s not all just in the feet; there are reflexology points in the hands too. However, as far as my education goes, we only learned reflexology in the feet and only in 3.5 hours too. Obviously, reflexology will be useful to add into a basic Swedish massage; however my knowledge and desire to learn more about reflexology are lacking. I personally find it hard to believe that pushing on a certain point on the foot can alleviate certain symptoms, but that’s just the western thinker in me talking.

Shiatsu – This Could be Interesting

As stated above, I am a western thinker. If, then. Cause, effect. That’s just how I think. Shiatsu is eastern oriental medicine. It’s circular. It’s pretty much the opposite of western thinking. That basically means that I am going to struggle with it. So as the heading states, this could be interesting. I’ll be sure to report back as I learn more because as of now, I have only had a few classes on it.

Treatments – Not all is Lost

This is what I came to massage school for. Treatments. How to release the psoas? What happens if the pectoralis minor is tight? How to assess posture? What is connective tissue work? These are the questions I want to get answered and treatments is the class in which I will answer them. So far we are learning Connective Tissue work and it is awesome. Again, I will report back as I learn more about different treatment techniques as I have only had a few classes so far.

Wow, looks like I have learned a lot since I posted last. I should probably update more often. About that…

One of the best things about NYC – besides the subways, dunkin donuts, Times Square, Central Park, East Village, Hot Dog Stands – is that they have Spa Week every year and all New Yorkers embrace it. It’s basically a week where a bunch of reputable spas around the city charge a mere $50 bucks for their top of the line treatments. You only pay $50 and get over a hundred dollars worth of relaxation.

I love Spa week because I really can’t afford to go on a regular basis, but for $50 bucks – what the heck! Plus they offer everything from Acupuncture, Facials, Swedish Massages and a ton more. For more information, check out this site Spaweek Guide which offers tips on how to spa, questions you might have if you’re a first timer and a list of places that are participating. Ahhhhhhhh…..

The orthotherapy is part of natural therapies, not recognized by traditional medicine.
But what is it?
In the title of this article, I mentioned the massage, physio, this means that the orthotherapy serves to relieve the pain of people. The pain may be different levels of pain or tension in muscles and joints. By extension, it can correct the defects of posture and make the joints more flexible.
And all this without exerting any manipulation of the spine. In this, the orthotherapist differs from the chiropractor and osteopath.

In this case, how comes it?
A meeting is in two parts: a massage and exercises (mobilizations) which are moving parts of your body.
Massage is a Swedish massage, deep. It acts mainly on your muscles. It lets them relax, to relieve congestion, to restore their flexibility. It also improves your circulation. Finally, this massage has the effect you relieve stress. You’re ready to undergo the second phase of the meeting: the mobilization.
These last are to set in motion certain parts of your body. You can perform alone or with the orthotherapist following your movements or that contradict exercising resistance. Rest assured, the goal is not to make you a gym: the movements are slow and moderate.

The orthotherapist therefore acts on your muscles, your joints, your posture, your blood circulation and breathing. Your body can rebalance itself in full. All your pain due to stiffness, too much inactivity, any accident, improper movement, etc.. are likely to disappear. By acting on your posture, you should feel well-being and can move more easily. Finally, you should breathe better and see your circulation improved through massage that helps bring more oxygen to your cells.
The orthotherapy would be effective to prevent pain, to “cure” or to rehabilitate after an accident.

The sessions, no more than ten are required, are accompanied by exercises that you do at home to prevent pain from returning or to maintain the balance that you acquired during the sessions.

Generally, the orthotherapist also affects your environment. It can give you advice to take the position that best suits your home or your workplace, to avoid pain. It can also help you manage your stress, eat better, etc.. in order to give you the best lifestyle possible.

The orthotherapy seems a miracle therapy. But, beware -
First, its effectiveness has never been proven scientifically. Secondly, this discipline is not regulated. There is no qualification for the exercise. If this interests you, check before to see if you’re not dealing with a charlatan. Handling large and deep are made and can be dangerous if they are performed by anyone.

Difference Between Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gagan_W_Deep]Gagan W Deep

People often tend to think of Swedish massage and deep tissue massage as similar to each other but the truth is they are quite different. Here is look at the difference between Swedish massage and deep tissue massage.

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered massage technique, utilizing a firm pressure on the muscles. It involves employing a series of long yet gliding strokes. In this technique the massage therapist also kneads the muscles and makes some vibrating taps on the body. The therapists concentrate on improving the blood circulation, easing the tension in the body’s muscles and improving the muscles’ flexibility.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage that aims at affecting the deeper tissue structure of the muscles. It also affects the connective tissue, known as fascia. It utilizes a large number of similar techniques and movements as the Swedish massage, but the movements tend to have much more pressure. The deep tissue massage is a more focused massage. During it the massage therapist tends to concentrate on releasing specific chronic muscle tension as well as the muscular knots, or adhesions.

A Swedish massage is given to help with increasing the flow of oxygen in the blood as well as releasing toxins from the body’s muscles. It can really shorten the recovery time for a muscular strain by simply flushing the lactic acids, uric acids, and other type of metabolic wastes out of the body tissues.

Swedish massage is given to increase the circulation of blood without actually increasing the workload of the heart. It helps to stretch the ligaments and tendons to make them pliable and supple. It stimulates the skin as well as the nervous system to soothe the nerves. It is helpful in reducing both emotional and physical stress. In fact the massage is a staple in most stress management programs. It is also included in various other therapeutic procedures.

Deep tissue massage helps with both small muscle injuries as well as chronic problems. Massage is an excellent way to deal with a whiplash injury or a sports injury. Deep tissue massage is helpful in treating spasms as well as muscle tension.

Physicians sometimes prescribe deep tissue massage for the pain of Fibromyalgia or Osteoarthritis. It also helps to correct posture problems.

A Swedish massage may involve the use of various oils, especially essential oils, to reduce friction as well as for their aromatherapy benefits.

A deep tissue massage also may involve the use of various oils or lotions, but their application is a little different from the Swedish massage. At times, for deep work, oil or lotion is not necessary, and the best effect can come without them.

I had my reservation online. Gentleman’s package. Swedish full body massage and facial. That’s about two hours all in all.

After I paid at the front desk, I was given my locker number (#1). That’s good, I thought. I am the only client for now. Upon entering the room, I was offered with a ginger tea by the male attendant. I am not a fan of tea, but I have to try it because damn, I paid hefty for the services so might as well say yes to every questions ask! Unbelievable, the ginger is really good! I had one full cup.

Prior to the massage itself, I had my steam bath. All by myself. Cool, the foggy room is so hot it makes you sweat right away upon entering it. And your skin turns pinkish. After five minutes in there, I had my cold shower to close the pores.

After the shower, I again had some ginger tea. Second cup. Then, went straight to the massage room. One hour of bliss here. After the massage, I had facial. Theirs is not the prick-that-whiteheads kind of facial. They only apply exfoliants, scrubs, cream, and that’s it. Not invasive at all. But my face is smooth afterwards–same effect, minus the redness from pricking.

Afterwards, I have another cup of ginger tea. Damn, two hours of bliss well spent on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Others watch the Mayweather-Marquez fight. Me, I was in Greece lounging and enjoying myself. I don’t have to go that far, it’s just in The Spa Podium.

PS: My Singapore-based friend is inviting me to another spa moment when she gets home. Excited.

Getting a Swedish massage can be a relaxing and enjoyable adventure. A Swedish massage is one of the most commonly recognized forms of massage. It mainly consists of long, gliding strokes that induce a state of relaxation. The Swedish message is the most widely practiced form of massage.

First- Decide with the massage therapist which type of massage that you will be receiving. If you’re new to massage, you probably don’t want to have the most vigorous of styles, but a more relaxing gentle motion.

Second- Check whether the massage is to be done in the nude or if partial dress is optional. During the massage, the client is constantly draped with just the area being worked on, exposed. If you still have discomfort at disrobing, explain this to the therapist when you make your appointment so she can recommend what you should wear to the massage.

Third- Share any concerns with the massage therapist that you may have. Some parts of your body may be extremely sensitive and you would prefer that they are not touched. You may also have health conditions that should be revealed to the Swedish massage therapist.

Fourth- Forget about the day and focus on the actual strokes of the massage. This focus will help calm your mind, and it’s always best to just enjoy the experience. Be in the moment.

Fifth- Notice that the therapist is making long gliding strokes. These are meant to stimulate the blood flow and lymph system. She will also use a kneading motion to relax muscle tension, and tapping, cupping and whacking movements to stimulate the nerves. The Swedish message is meant to stimulate the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems.

Sixth- Sleep if you need to. You will still gain the full effect of the massage.

You’ve worked really hard on the 5-Factor Diet - bravo! Now it’s time to reward yourself! Before you step away from your computer and head to the office vending machine for a candy bar, or put away your gym clothes for the day, keep reading: One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to reward yourself with a snack that’s high in fat and sugar or by skipping today’s workout. Not only is that counterproductive, but you may feel unhappy afterward. For a healthier reward, why not go for a massage?

A good massage can help reduce stress and improve circulation; it can even help with pain management. Intrigued? Here are several types of massage you might consider:

Swedish: The therapist uses a combination of sweeping strokes, kneading, and circular motions on major muscle groups in your legs and back.

Hot stone: Heated stones are placed along your back and legs to loosen tight muscles. The therapist may also use the stones and warm oil to massage you.

Deep tissue: A more intense massage, this type is designed to target deeper muscles; it can be used on individuals who have been injured or have sore muscles.

While doing research on the history of Swedish massage, I came across many discrepancies. So as a result, I will not be relating information regarding it’s history. What I will explain is the main techniques incorporated in what massage practitioners practice while giving a Swedish massage currently in America.

The main goals of Swedish massage is to provide relaxation and improve circulation. The direction of massage strokes are what helps facilitate blood flow improvement. The focus of using strokes that are long and flowing help to promote relaxation.

Swedish massage consists of mainly five basic strokes:

1. Effleurage: Gliding strokes
2. Petrissage: Kneading movements
3. Friction: Deeper pressure
4. Tapottement: Brisk tapping
5. Gymnastic: Bending and stretching

Some of the other benefits of Swedish massage are:

1. Increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles
2. It stretches the muscles, ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable
3. Reduces muscle spasms
4. Stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time
5. Reduces stress
6. Promotes well-being
7. Satisfies needs for caring nurturing touch

As you see, Swedish massage is beneficial in many ways and adds to the overall quality of life for the recipient. Thanks for reading, PJ Harris, LMP http://www.pjharris.com/

All SCHN members agreed to donated half their treatment fees when receiving a treatment booking and St Raphael’s Hospice was mentioned between the above dates. People pampered and treated friends, knowing that at the same time they would be supporting St Raphael’s Hospice in North Cheam. To view all the SCHN Therapists, just click Therapies on the top left of this page.
