Before I started my Swedish language course I read somewhere on a website about how easy Swedish was to learn.

Apparently the Swedes only have one way of conjugating a verb. That and the fact that a lot of words are vaguely similar to Dutch. Easy peasy.

Sounds delightful.

What they forgot to mention though was that the Swedish past tense is an ant-hill of exceptions in grammar. And that the spelling changes in each case too.

Thank you very much, website.

A while ago, my brother (who is equal, if not surpassing me on the crazy scale) and I decided to pic

A while ago, my brother (who is equal, if not surpassing me on the crazy scale) and I decided to pick up our pal Bri from her dorm and crash another friend’s quiet Friday night. He and I loaded up the car with explosive party poppers and headed south to the cities.

Once we picked up Bri, we made a mad dash to the local target (which was by no means local, unless you consider driving nearly 40 minutes out of the way local. If you do, I hate you.) 10 minutes prior to closing, only to pick up 2 crucial items to add to our night. Footsie pajamas and a 2 lb. bag of Swedish Fish. Bri and I bolted to the lavatory to throw on our fleece treasures, and once we were suited in nonsense, we galloped to the parking lot and proceeded to hop around, blasting our imaginary pistols, screaming, “THERE’S GOLD IN THEM THAR HILLS!”

We loaded back into the car and trudged to our friend’s apartment. Once we had parked the car and shuffled to his door, we armed ourselves with party poppers up the yin, and knocked. Our poor defenseless friend’s face was showered with gunpowder and streamers, thus burning his lip. But it was cool. We had Swedish Fish. A lot of them.

He invited us in, and to our surprise, he had a couple of people over. So we all watched Harvey Birdman for about an hour or so, then went on our merry way. (You’re probably all thinking, “Good God, does this girl watch anything but Harvey Birdman? Does she have a legitimate life outside of Adult Swim?” My answer to that is, “Shut up.”)

The time was nearly 2:30 a.m. when we crashed at my place watching a Spongebob DVD.

The next morning, Bri and I (Still jolly in our footsie pj’s) decided to pour Coco Puffs for all of us, when we noticed the 2 lb. bag of Swedish Fish was still not quite empty. We dished a generous handful of these little corn-syrup delicacies into my brother’s cereal and handed him the bowl, then sat down and watched iCarly.

Without so much as a flinch, he sucked down the entire bowl of sugar-molten candy-cereal mixture, licked the bowl, and simply said, “You guys are jerks.” Henceforth, he is my hero.

Our adventure ended as I drove Bri back to her dorm, all the while belting out “I Want You in My Room” by the Venga Boyz.

The night was of pure magic. Pure. Footsie. Magic.

Below are two scenes from the movie based on Lagerkvist’s novel Barabbas, published in 1950.

The story of Barabbas can be found Mark 15:6-15:

6 Now it was the custom at the Festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. 13 “Crucify him!” they shouted. 14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Here are two clips from the 1961 movie starring Anthony Quinn:

Yeah, I love Christmas songs. Listen to the radio a lot while driving my kids to and from school or to their different after school activities. There’s just a few I listen to, usually switch around the following: Mix Megapol, Rix FM or Karlstads Nya Radio.

Someone asked me the other day to name three of my favorite Christmas songs. Piece of cake. So I thought. Let me tell you, this was no easy feat for me.

I wouldn’t be surprised if “Last Christmas” by Wham! is most likely the ”Most Played Christmas Song” followed by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” at the number two spot. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” should be one of the top five. Hands down. I could never get tired of them. Or could I?

So…my favorite Christmas hits sung by Swedes.

1) “Last Christmas”, Alcazar, a Swedish pop band. It’s a cover of Wham’s giant Christmas hit.

2) “All I want for Christmas is you” by Sanna Nielsen, a beautiful and talented Swedish pop singer.

3) “Julen är här” (‘Eng. Christmas is here) sung by Amy Diamond, 17 yrs. old, Swedish pop singer and actress. She once was a figure skater. Melissa and her fellow skaters skated to this at the Christmas Show…

Today is a special day for my husband and I — it’s our very first Christmas as husband and wife! We are staying here in Nebraska for Christmas this year, and getting together with my hubby’s side of the family tomorrow. It will be my first Christmas not in North Dakota in all my 28 years, but as I joked with my aunt, it will also be my first lutefisk-free holiday of my life! Lutefisk is something my Norwegian and Swedish family has enjoyed all my life. This year, I will be enjoying kase knoepfla with my husband’s German-Russian family! It’s fun to discover what Christmas traditions other families have.

But their tradition is to get together on Christmas Day only, so we have Christmas Eve all to ourselves. It’s been just glorious to think of what traditions we want to start for our very own family. Our agenda for the day has included lots of movie-watching, book reading, video game playing, and a walk outside with our pup. Here are a few photos I snapped of the ice as it covered everything in sight:

Icicle branches

Soon we’ll be off to church, then home to a cozy steak and potato dinner, then gifts and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” We’re making scrambled eggs and blueberry muffins for morning, when we hope to find some treasures left by Santa. Then it will be off to celebrate with family…..another year come and gone. It’s been a good one. A Wonderful Life indeed.

I hope you have a chance to kick back and relax this holiday, even if you’ve got a house full of kids and/or family. Here’s a treat I always enjoy: a small plate of Jarlsburg cheese, green olives, and almonds. Top it off with a glass of wine or beer — pure heaven!

Kick up your feet, watch a few movies with someone you love, and soak in the leisure. The busy start of another year will come soon enough — now is the time to savor the passing of 2009.

Following meetings between Sweden’s IF Metall Union and Saab bidder Spyker Cars yesterday, union representatives have told Reuters that Spyker’s business plan was a copy of an old plan made by Koenigsegg, the Swedish luxury carmaker which dropped its bid for Saab last month.

Union chairman, Mr Stefan Lofven, told Reuters that Spyker has conducted stress tests on the plan after meeting with Spyker CEO, Mr Victor Muller.

“Spyker is anxious for this to become a reality,” Mr Lofven said. “From what we can see, this seems serious. They have put in a lot of time and money into this.”

Spyker is pressing ahead with efforts to cut a deal for Saab with GM after lodging a new fast-track offer to buy Saab from GM on Sunday.

Speculation of possible backing from a Dutch billionaire fanned the Saab’s hopes of an eleventh-hour reprieve.

I made this for my oldest sister’s birthday this year. She was born in 1976. So the data is collected from 1976 to 2009. Oh, it’s in Swedish as well. In case you had a hard time reading the ‘tags’.

Looking closely you can see that foreign politics affects us big time i Sweden. One of the largest tags being USA and President (we don’t have a President in Sweden).

This weekend, the boyfriend and me made Knäck!

That sounds wrong. Let’s try again.
This weekend, the boyfriend and me made traditional Swedish Christmas caramels! I feel so Swedish now!
And it wasn’t even hard – surprising for anything that contains the words “caramel” and “candy”, Knäck is amazingly easy to prepare.

Knäck is a kind of Toffee, made with sugar, syrup, butter, cream and almonds. The consistency varies depending on local tastes, from fudge-y to stick-to-your-teeth hard. The longer you boil the candy, the harder it will become after pouring. Ideally, you should be able to stack them in a jar without them sticking together.
The candy comes in little paper cups that look like muffin cups but are thimble-sized! They are sold all over in Sweden during Christmas time and usually, the back of the packet contains the recipe.

Since we doubled it for our purposes, this recipe makes about two jars of Knäck. That is quite a lot!

The ingredients:
3 Tsp. butter
4 dl sugar
4 dl light syrup (Swedish “light syrup” seems to be best translated to inverted sugar syrup)
3 dl full fat cream (whipping cream is fine)
150g sweet almonds, peeled and chopped.
The Container:
Lots of those tiny little paper cups. We made about 120 with this recipe, which is half a packet.

The recipe?
Dump everything but the nuts together in a thick-bottomed pot. Boil for approx. 30 minutes.
When it reduces and becomes a darker shade, try dripping a spoon or so into a glass of cold water. If you can easily mold the caramel after fishing it out, without it crumbling apart, it’s done.

During the time it boils, prepare a lot of those small paper cups, best on a baking tray so that you can move them close to the pot for pouring. You should have them all set up and ready to be filled or you won’t manage!

Mix in the nuts and put a spoonful into each paper cup. Be careful to keep the pot over low heat in the meanwhile so the candy doesn’t harden in the bowl.
(Or, in the immortal words of my great-aunt: “And then we don’t throw away the pan…”)

Let cool at room temperature, then store. I had brought out my pretty Christmas-themed candy boxes, but the boyfriend said they looked best in glass jars.

And they do!

JERUSALEM – [Palestine] Israel has admitted that in the 1990s, its forensic pathologists harvested organs from dead bodies, including Palestinians, without permission of their families.

The issue emerged with publication of an interview with the then-head of Israel’s Abu Kabir forensic institute, Dr. Jehuda Hiss. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic, who released it because of a huge controversy last summer over an allegation by a Swedish newspaper that Israel was killing Palestinians in order to harvest their organs. Israel hotly denied the charge.

Parts of the interview were broadcast on Israel’s Channel 2 TV over the weekend. In it, Hiss said, “We started to harvest corneas … Whatever was done was highly informal. No permission was asked from the family.“

The Channel 2 report said that in the 1990s, forensic specialists at Abu Kabir harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians and foreign workers, often without permission from relatives.

In a response to the TV report, the Israeli military confirmed that the practice took place. “This activity ended a decade ago and does not happen any longer,“ the military said in a statement quoted by Channel 2.

In the interview, Hiss described how his doctors would mask the removal of corneas from bodies. “We’d glue the eyelid shut,” he said. “We wouldn’t take corneas from families we knew would open the eyelids.”

Many of the details in the interview first came to light in 2004, when Hiss was dismissed as head of the forensic institute because of irregularities over use of organs there. Israel’s attorney general dropped criminal charges against him, and Hiss still works as chief pathologist at the institute. He had no comment on the TV report.

Hiss became director of the institute in 1988. He said in the interview that the practice of harvesting organs without permission began in the “early 1990s.” However, he also said that military surgeons removed a thin layer of skin from bodies as early as 1987 to treat burn victims. Hiss said he believed that was done with family consent. The harvesting ended in 2000, he said.

And of course, we’re supposed to believe that these Israeli Nazis tell the truth, right?

Complaints against the institute, where autopsies of dead bodies are performed, at the time of Hiss’ dismissal came from relatives of Israeli soldiers and civilians as well as Palestinians. The bodies belonged to people who died from various causes, including diseases, accidents and Israeli-Palestinian violence, but there has been no evidence to back up the claim in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that Israeli soldiers killed Palestinians for their organs. Angry Israeli officials called the report “anti-Semitic.” – Anti-Semitic is such a terrible word! Let’s call is Nazism!

The academic, Nancy Scheper-Hughes, a professor of anthropology at the University of California-Berkeley, said she decided to make the interview public in the wake of the Aftonbladet controversy, which raised diplomatic tensions between Israel and Sweden and prompted Sweden’s foreign minister to call off a visit to the Jewish state.

Scheper-Hughes said that while Palestinians were “by a long shot” not the only ones affected by the practice in the 1990s, she felt the interview must be made public now because “the symbolism, you know, of taking skin of the population considered to be the enemy, (is) something, just in terms of its symbolic weight, that has to be reconsidered.” – The Modern Day Zionist Auschwitz!

While insisting that all organ harvesting was done with permission, Israel’s Health Ministry told Channel 2, “The guidelines at that time were not clear.” It added, “For the last 10 years, Abu Kabir has been working according to ethics and Jewish law.” Yes, as in “We’re Chosen and you are animals!”

Israel has admitted that pathologists harvested organs from dead Palestinians, and others without the consent of their families – a practice that it said ended in the 1990s, it emerged at the weekend.

The admission, by the former head of the country’s forensic institute, followed a furious row prompted by a Swedish newspaper reporting that Israel was killing Palestinians in order to use their organs – a charge that Israel denied and called “antisemitic”.

The revelation, in a television documentary, is likely to generate anger in the Arab and Muslim world and reinforce sinister stereotypes of Israel and its attitude to Palestinians. Iran’s state-run Press TV tonight reported the story, illustrated with photographs of dead or badly injured Palestinians.

Ahmed Tibi, an Israeli Arab MP, said the report incriminated the Israeli army.

The story emerged in an interview with Dr Yehuda Hiss, former head of the Abu Kabir forensic institute near Tel Aviv. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic who released it because of the row between Israel and Sweden over a report in the Stockholm newspaper Aftonbladet.

Channel 2 TV reported that in the 1990s, specialists at Abu Kabir harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians and foreign workers, often without permission from relatives.

The Israeli military confirmed to the programme that the practice took place, but added: “This activity ended a decade ago and does not happen any longer.”

Hiss said: “We started to harvest corneas … whatever was done was highly informal. No permission was asked from the family.”

However, there was no evidence that Israel had killed Palestinians to take their organs, as the Swedish paper reported. Aftonbladet quoted Palestinians as saying young men from the West Bank and Gaza Strip had been seized by the Israeli forces and their bodies returned to their families with missing organs. The interview with Hiss was released by Nancy Sheppard-Hughes, professor of anthropology at the University of California-Berkeley who had conducted a study of Abu Kabir.

She was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that while Palestinians were “by a long shot” not the only ones affected, she felt the interview must be made public, because “the symbolism, you know, of taking skin of the population considered to be the enemy, [is] something, just in terms of its symbolic weight, that has to be reconsidered.”

Israel demanded that Sweden condemn the Aftonbladet article, calling it an antisemitic “blood libel”. Stockholm refused, saying that to so would violate freedom of speech in the country. The foreign minister then cancelled a visit to Israel, just as Sweden was taking over the EU’s rotating presidency.

Hiss was removed from his post in 2004, when some details about organ harvesting were first reported, but he still works at the forensic institute.

Israel’s health ministry said all harvesting was now done with permission. “The guidelines at that time were not clear,” it said in a statement to Channel 2. “For the last 10 years, Abu Kabir has been working according to ethics and Jewish law.”

The west coast is one of Sweden major attractions. I have not been lucky to enjoy the summer breeze yet, but I can tell people in Gottskär are fond of sailing and they are well prepared to go on board.

Gottskär is about four kilometers from Kungsbacka. It is a popular seaside town in the west coast of Sweden and mostly populated by sailors.

In fact, the place is renowned for its excellent sailing conditions and these waters have been held regatas since the 19th century.

Boats left in Gottskär harbour.

Gottskär is part of Kungsbacka municipality and as the main city the wooden houses gives to this seaside town a cozy look.

Most of the houses are the Swedish families’ second homes yet some of them are occupied all year long.

Besides the cars parked outside the garage, there is another facility that is mostly found in this lodgings – the boat carriage.

Gottskär has a nice harbour. I was told that during the summer the sea becomes colourful by many boat’s of different sizes.

I had a bit of such scene today.

As I’m here during the opposite season, the look I got of Gottskär was completely different.

I left my imagination go instead and my still camera did the magic.

Draget frozen bay.

I also visited the nearby town of Draget. It is located two kilometers from Gottskär and its main feature is the seaside too.

The water was frozen as there were -5°C today. But there was no excuse to keep Draget inhabitants away of the coast.

I saw a few of them skating on the ice.

I am so pissed today. I might type a phrase that I will regret later on or will make you mad as you

I am so pissed today. I might type a phrase that I will regret later on or will make you mad as you are reading this…but it’s got nothing to do with you. Just clearing my mind out.

I have stopped posting about SFI…why? those following days that went thru was not really interesting. I felt stupid and uncomfy. But I passed the test by the way with the score of 32/37.5 . First I was a bit confuse of the half total score since we were scored according to spelling and understanding the questions. I have a friend who takes the same course as nybörjare (beginner). She told me that all of the test they took have sample on how to answer the question, and we didn’t have it. Oooh! I remember we are devided into different sections… those who are a bit slow and unsure-ly smart are gathered together. And those who were in my section were the people who’s working already, a mom, chefs, career people and some stinky man. I have to be honest since they say Swedes don’t lie, it’s forbidden in Sweden!!!! yeah right! so if they think you did something wrong or something that won’t fit on their breeding standard they will just keep quiet since oh! Swedes are silent and reserved and sweet. yeah…yea..yeah. But when they turn around they’re gonna start talking and laugh about you. I have nothing against swede but sometimes the silence between their lies is so over seen, ooh I forgot they don’t lie. Like in Arlandagymnasiet (my school) You can’t be rude on Africans because they need support and love and donations, but Africans can be rude to us and no one gives a shit about it. I don’t generalize since I met a very 2 nice Africans that kept their feet on the ground. If you only knew some of my Filipino friends thinks they’re different now because they are learning basic Swedish and all they care about to ask is if I passed the exam because they did and they just want to know if they’re still better than me..I mean come on… what have we learned? words, words, and a lil rules in making phrases but still we can’t speak Swedish. taking it for 3 months you just get familiar with greetings, family greetings, friendly greetings and responding to hi, hello conversation…eh? It’s not that hard but it’s not easy either or shall I say Lagom (gentle or moderate). At first I thought I’m gonna have a nose and ear bleeding because of the language course. I remember my first day, I had a headache. I told my self that I have to stop this bullshittt! ( ooh I misspelled the shit! shit!) and it’s so focking cold here (misspelled again, Fuck!) Sorry for typing bad words. no worries you’re not gonna hear it anyway but you can see it (you’re dumb if you didn’t get this). back to my complains. I don’t know if I want to continue this course but I know my future and dreams is going to force me. I never thought that I wanted to be a chef in Sweden since I really don’t appreciate their boring food…and oh my G! they like sweets so much, as much as I am avoiding it. Again I am not generalizing since my in-laws cooks good food… and it is Lagom. Cooking in Sweden for my in-laws became my hobby but since I don’t have a Job and money everything is very limited. You know like you don’t have your own stuff to use and you always need to borrow, and I am bad on borrowing things…tooo shy and I don’t like it. In Sweden they like lending you stuffs just return it after you used it….or if you forgot they’re just gonna take it. Like a repo people who hasn’t seen “Pursuit of happiness”. What am I talking about??? Jag vet inte (I don’t know). When you ask some swede “what time is it?” and you know they have a watch or a clock near them…they have time to reply “jag vet inte”, first. (haha) and then you should’ve ask “can you check what time it is?” which is the perfect question for them to be kind to respond correctly. Moderate eh? Speaking of time telling, I am not so good on it yet since we are used to a.m. ,p.m. in the Philippines. Here when it’s 8:30 in the evening it’s half past eight and in Swedish it’s Halv Nio or 20.30 which is Tjugo Tretti. If it’s 8:35 in the evening and in swedish it’s Fem över halv nio…ahhh!! quit it. I don’t like it. it’s easier now anyway since I learned it by my self. Everything I do here is just by my self. I’m in a hard situation but easy to accept if my heart is into it. My husband doesn’t go out not because he doesn’t want it but he can’t…it’s really sad but I understand him in some ways. My routines sucks and the solution is to change it but when you start the same acts every time you wake up the same chores follows. Brewing coffee, cleaning the kitchen, cleaning lil Erika, make food for Erika, watch kids show with my lil angel, clean her amm amm bottles, sitting in front of the computer, checking mails and my Facebook, put Erika to sleep, play with Erika, go out with Erika, shop some food or Erika’s milk, cook, eat, watch tv, do laundry, dish wash, sit in the sofa, watch hell’s kitchen, play with Erika till she gets tired, net surfing…. putting Erika to sleep, clean her feeding bottles, throw trash, moving Erika to our bed, back to watching tv, pouring Erika’s milk in a bottle, shower, watch tv and sleep. Shit! the same thing I did yesterday and the other day and last week and last month and last five months ago. And it’s my 6th month stay here in Sweden. SO cold and depressing…sometimes I wanna put my head in a pail of water and drown my self. Or piss an arab man and get bombed. bull shit! I’m outta here! Peace
