Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving. As we look back to the autumn of 1621 and the first feast shared by the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians, we also commemorate the 388th anniversary of the death of composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, the “Orpheus of Amsterdam.” He died at the age of 59 in October of 1621.

Sweelinck, a somewhat unknown composer in today’s society, spent most of his life in Amsterdam. He made a name for himself as a keyboardist, composer, and much sought after music teacher. His students included many of the founders of the seventeenth century north German organ school, which reached its pinnacle through JS Bach.

Sweelinck’s body of work consists mostly of vocal music and keyboard works. Of unique significance, he composed polyphonic settings of all 150 Psalms.

Most notably though, for the Lutenist, he composed a handful of interesting lute works. They include two newly composed pieces and seven pieces arranged from previous vocal settings of the Psalms. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians lists the following titles.

• Bienheureux est quiconques [Psalm 128]
• De tout mon coeur t’exalteray [Psalm 9]
• La terre au Seigneur appartient [Psalm 24]
• Le Seigneur ta priere entende [Psalm 20]
• Mon Dieu me paist sous as puissance haute [Psalm 23]
• Ne vueilles pas, ô Sire [Psalm 6]
• Pourquoy font bruit et s’assemblent les gents? [Psalm 2]

A few other secular lute pieces from other manuscripts are attributed to Sweelinck, but their legitimacy is questionable.

Op 1 januari 1999 werd de euro ingevoerd en nu 10 jaar later, kan ik nog steeds niet met mijn ogen dicht het geld uittellen.
Erger is dat ik me niet goed realiseer dat het geld is. Het is ook niet iets waar ik graag naar kijk en kan er geen enkele schoonheid in ontdekken. Het zijn grauwe , nietzeggende papiertjes.
Nee dan het Nederlandse geld. Dat was een feest om naar te kijken en om in je handen te hebben. Het was zo mooi dat het elke keer zonde was als je het moest uitgeven .

Vroeger was alles mooier...

Elke keer was ik weer benieuwd wat de ontwerpers Drupsteen en Oxenaar weer voor moois hadden gemaakt. De liefde die de ontwerpers van het Nederlandse geld erin legde, is niet terug te vinden in de ontwerpers van de eurobiljetten.

Ik vraag me af of het nietszeggende gevoel dat ik bij de eurobiljetten heb, en er daarom ook veel gemakkelijker mee omga, te maken heeft met gebrek aan schoonheid. Schoonheid van een ontwerp, hoe eenvoudig ook, vervult mij altijd met vreugde en ik kijk er dan ook graag naar. Bovendien ga ik met iets wat mooi is, zuiniger om dan met iets wat me niet zegt.
Is dit herkenbaar of heb ik alleen een slecht gevoel bij de eurobiljetten? Nee, dan de grauwe nietszeggende eurobiljetten. Mijn God, wat een treurnis en saaiheid.

Some of my earliest posts when I started this blog at the beginning of the year were about making a clavichord. I recently went to see David Condy, who had commissioned the instrument, and had the great pleasure of hearing him play it. Although an accomplished pianist and organist, he told me that it had taken him a little while to get used to the different action of a clavichord keyboard. As you can hear if you click on the pieces below, he has succeeded magnificently. Clavichords make a beautiful but rather small sound, so don’t turn the volume up too high.

He’s playing a piece from Sweelinck’s Liedvariationem für Klavier, called Unter der Linden grüne. The first is just a snippet for anyone who wants to hear what a clavichord sounds like. Hoxe encontrei, no canal en YouTube de recorderson unha fermosa peza, que consta dun tema e variacións, tocada coa flauta de bico. O título é “Malle Symes” e o autor, Jacobus van Noordt, quen viviu nos Países Baixos no século XVII e pertencía a unha familia de músicos: era fillo de Sybrandus van Noordt senior e irmán de Anthoni van Noordt.
