Syma Chowdhry - Blogger / First Forecast Mornings News Reporter

The phrase “reinventing Michigan” Is heard all over the state. But who knew wine would be a popular industry here?

There are more than 80 wineries in Michigan. Governor Rick Synder wants to celebrate this, so he declared April as “Michigan Wine Month.”

What can you do to celebrate? Head over to the Michigan Wine International Wine Expo in Novi (http://www.michiganwineexpo.com/) today and tomorrow. I will be there Saturday helping to raise money for Sweet Dreamzzz (http://www.sweetdreamzzzdetroit.org).

What better way to support Michigan wineries, have a great time, see your favorite news anchor (ahem –ME!) and donate to charity?

If you can’t make it to the wine expo, why not go to Vinotecca in Royal Oak?

They are celebrating Michigan Wine Month by featuring eight different wines.

They also have new menu items that compliment your glass of “vino.”

And those entrees are from Michigan too, like Ludington smoked troute mousse or Mackinac chicken, maybe even some Traverse Bay duck.

The Michigan drinks are from:
* Bonafide Winery, Old Mission Peninsula
* B. Nektar Meadery, Ferndale
* M. Lawrence, Suttons Bay
* Fenn Valley, Lake Michigan Shore
* Left Foot Charlie, Leelanau Peninsula

Wine from Vinotecca (photo by: Syma Chowdhry, WWJ-TV)

I learned that the wine whites can rival competitors from other popular vineyards outside of Michigan. Whites do well in cold climates. Red wine usually thrives in warmer climates, but the Michigan reds I tried were great. It was light and sweet, which is enjoyable. But for heartier reds, you may want to stick to reds from outside Michigan.

I can’t wait to explore the great wines Michigan has to offer tomorrow at the wine expo. I tried all eight wines Vinotecca offered and my favorite was the Bonafide Winery Chardonnay and the Left Foot Charlie Sweet Riesling.
