Sometimes I just can’t help myself these days. I’ll be reading or watching a story unfold either on

Sometimes I just can’t help myself these days. I’ll be reading or watching a story unfold either on the net or on the tube when, slowly at first, my mouth falls open and stays there. The latest occurrence was over a story concerning a young six year old cub scout, Zachery Christie, who took his Swiss Army knife to school and who now faces forty five days in reform school as a consequence. The reason for his incarceration is due to the ‘zero tolerance’ policy his school, Christina located in Wilmington, Delaware observes. This policy was adopted in the wake of violence that has occurred in locations like Columbine High School. From No

My problem with this story, and the reason for my mouth behaving badly, is the way in which the school officials are handling this absurd situation. In what should have been a very quick and intelligent decision to not go forward with a punishment, the school board President, George Evans was quoted as saying, “The idea was to avoid discriminating against any student and to treat all students the same.” He apparently sees nothing wrong with throwing Zachery in with more hardened problem kids. Hey, a young person can learn a lot in reform school! Give me a break!

Someone please wake me up. I thought our schools were one of the last bastions of intelligent applied behavior. Instead, I see mature adults acting more like children than children.

Sidste skud på stammen indenfor mobile muligheder er en mobil der kan vise dine, film, billeder, præsentationer og lign. via en indbygget projektor. Samsung viste i slutningen af sidste år en ny mobil frem med netop denne nye smarte funktion. Mobilen hedder meget apropos Samsung Show

Projektoren er lavet af Texas Instruments og skulle være i stand til at projektere billeder på op til 50 tommer i opløsningen 480 x 320 pixel ved at udsende en lysstyrke på 10 lumen.

Se en demonstration af telefonen her:

When it comes to picking the ideal luggage, there are many options ranging from different prices, colors, materials, and styles. However, there is nothing more disappointing than the experience of getting cheap bags that will only last through a few trips.

Buying luggage with your vacation in mind is not the only think to consider before going shopping. Your bags need to be durable, affordable and have style, such that you can find with Samsonite luggage.

Quality is crucial to the survival of your luggage through all the handling it will endure during holiday times so buying your set of bags from one of the top luggage brands in America is an investment not an expenditure.

Samsonite luggage is one of the leading brands worldwide, along with American Tourister, and Victorinox, the renowned manufacturer of the Swiss knife that almost any household in the world has.

Buying the top America’s brand guarantee your luggage set will withstand any event during your vacations, just keep in mind where are you going to and determine the size and quantity of luggage you may need.

American Tourister is the way to go to enjoy the spirit of pride reigning in the United States. Under this brand you can find luggage collections with suggestive names such as American Tourister Tribute, and American Tourister iLite American Set.

There are also premium collections including carry-on expandable upright or spinner luggage sets, similar to those available through the Samsonite luggage collection.

Victorinox is a brand that offers the “Carry with Confidence” guarantee that covers airline damage. The guarantee itself speaks aloud the quality found in each luggage set.

Keeping with the adventurer style, all the collection has suggestive names such as Victorinox Swiss Army NXT Luggage, Victorinox Swiss Army Werks Traveler, Victorinox Swiss Army Lingo, and Victorinox Swiss Army Adventure Gear.

However, Samsonite luggage is the top American brand and the favorite worldwide. Samsonite luggage has a motto that summarizes its popularity and durability: “Samsonite worldproof.”

Now, that you know about the top brands in America, determine your budget and find a reputable luggage store to buy your set. Keep in mind expandability and the requirements of heavy-duty wheels that you might need depending on the place to go.

Make sure that your luggage size fits the requirements of airlines and get only the approved carry-on size if you need to take a plane to enjoy your vacation.

Whether Samsonite luggage or any other brand, your bags should also have the possibility of expanding or accommodating additional items in case you decide to continue with a longer trip.

Luang Prabang , 1am

I stepped off the bus at 1am, blinking back the sleepy haze in my mind. It dawned upon me that no one else had gotten off the bus. By then, I was surrounded by a tight team of tuk-tuk mafia.

Five men gathered about me. “Tuk-tuk to guest house? We take you to good guest house.”

“Eh, I’ve got a guest house already,” I stammered. “Cold River Guest House!” [NB: I had not made any reservations there. Better yet, I couldn't really remember where it was anyway.]

“Okay, we take you there. US $2!”

“Eh…… okay”

I scanned the 5 faces, trying to pick out the most decent face in the lot to be my driver, but too late. The tv-lout lookalike started heading for his tuk-tuk. And as if by prior arrangement, the others allowed him to ferry me.

“You pay now. You pay before we go,” insisted another of the mafia member. He would have been typecasted by the tv producer as the baby faced villain. “No, I pay you when we get to guest house.” Baby-face then climbed into the tuk tuk with me.

The tuk tuk stopped outside a little gloomy alley. Baby-face motioned in the direction of the alley. “Cold River, there!” “Tuk tuk, go in?” I requested in a little voice. Baby-face gruffly headed for the alley and beckoned me to follow…

The guest house’s gate to be drawn and lock. All was unlit within the compound, saved a faint light and wisps of cigarette smoke at a far corner.

I gave a $10 note to Baby-face. He said with uncertainty, “I keep this. No change.” prompting me to snatch the tenner out of his fingers.

“No, you give me $8 change.”

“You give me $5.”

“No. It’s only $2. The driver said two. So now I give two.”

“No. Five. You give me $5. I no change. You give me five.”

“No! It is $2. I know that tuk tuk here is only $1. So now, if you no have change, you take $1.” I held my USD1 to his face.

[note: I had no Lao currency. My smallest denomination were a US$1 & a US$10 bill. Everything else, stuffed in my other wallet and in my panty liner, were US$50 bills. Yes, I disingenuously managed to hide Uncle Sam’s greenbacks into a Johnson’s & Johnson’s unscented individually wrapped panty liner without destroying the packaging. Yea, yea… Sheer and breathable brilliance. No superstitious Asian baddies would ever dream of prying apart a feminine hygiene product for cash! ]

“Then you come back with me! I take you back to bus station.” Baby-face marched back to the waiting tuk tuk.

My heart sank. I meekly trudged after him, and then stopped in my tracks. “No. I’m not going back with you. I’m not in the wrong. I want to pay you.” I strode back to the guest house. Baby-face made an about-turn and came after me. He dialed tuk tuk driver/ tv-lout and spoke furiously in Lao.

At the guest house’s gate, I set my backpack against the gate and sat down cross-legged. My sense of injustice increased as time shuffled past. Shaking off the little tremors of anger which crippled my hands, I edged my hand into my right pocket and fingered my Swiss knife.

Baby-face and TV lout re-appeared. Again, Baby-face demanded for more payment than what was agreed upon. TV Lout nodded cautiously.

“I’m not paying $5! Either you give me change or you take $1. If not, we’ll wait here till morning when the guest house opens and I’ll get change from them. If you want to waste your time and wait here when you could be earning money, so be it!”

I think Baby-face and TV Lout were quite confounded with how the events were unfolding. I remained seated on the dusty floor, uncertain of the outcome but certain that I would not yield with a whimper.

“What’s happening here?” A gruff voice enquired.

Baby-face and TV Lout stared uneasily at four unsmiling newcomers. The group at the far corner of the guest house had heard our commotion and decided to investigate.

“They agreed to bring me to Cold River for $2, but they are now asking for $5.”

“What?! It’s only 10,000 kip from the terminal. You know that and you are asking for more and you want $5? So here, it takes two men against one girl just to get more?” sneered the man with the gruff voice. He stretched his hand through the gate with a 10,000 kip note in his fingers. “Take it and go.”

“But she agreed to give us $2,” Baby-face stated sullenly.

“And so I did.” I stood and thrust the US$1 note into his hands. Both men turned and left.

The foursome on the other side of the gate gazed at me with concern. “Have you any where to stay tonight?” asked the lady. “Nope…” “Well, then why don’t you stay with us? We’ll help you get over this gate and you can sleep with us.”

The 2-metre high gate had spikes at the top. A cactus plant was strategically placed on the high wall next to the gate. Hmmm… I scaled the gate, sat on the wall & swung my legs over. The tall, brawny man with the gruff voice, stretched his arms up towards me. “Jump,” he instructed and I heeded.

Jo, Zach, D’ter & Tomy. I’ll remember these people for hauling me out of trouble. Jo, the vivacious & zany Swede. Zach, the jazz & bargain-loving American. D’ter, the hot Belgian photographer & Tomy, my Belgian hero.

Off we were to another round of introductions and friendship-making before snoozetime. I curled up in D’ter’s sleeping bag with Lion in my palms, and had a sound sweet sleep.
