So, Major Lazer’s latest offering from the album ‘Guns don’t kill people Lazers do‘ has arrived, and I’ll be honest… I’m not really feeling the song. I mean you gotta admit, it’s no ‘Pon De Floor’?. But the video is amazing! Directed by Eric Wareheim and featuring Nina Sky, Ricky Blaze and four of the ugliest girls to appear in a music video since Windowlicker. It has to be seen to be believed. Check it out!

Everything in the multimedia industry is switching to high definition (HD). There’s HD radio, HD television, and Blu-Ray DVD’s. This new high-definition media requires technology that can deliver this information quickly. The most popular cable used to deliver HD information is the HDMI cable. It sets itself apart from the component cables, because it consists of one cable that delivers both visual and audio information. An HDMI cable is capable of delivering 5 GB of digital media; however they are rarely used at capacity. Because HDMI does not use all of its bandwidth, as more media progresses its technology you will not have to worry about updating your equipment. – Xbox 360 HDMI Cable
HDMI Switch Port
HDMI Switch Port

And here we come to an end of the 1970s in the Any Major Soul series. There are two mixes covering ’80s soul HERE and HERE. Still, the years 1980/81 and possibly 1982/83 were good enough to yield any major mixes; I’ve not thought about later years.

It’s tempting to dismiss the soul music produced in the disco era. I think this mix shows that it was still a golden era for soul, if not of quite the incredible standards a few years earlier when there was the happy confluence of the influences exerted by the likes of Philly, Motown, Hi, Muscle Shoals, Atlantic, and the Chicago scene.

If I was asked which of these tracks in this mix I’d take with me to a desert island, I would be hard pressed to choose between Bill Withers’ Love Is and Minnie Riperton’s Never Existed Before. I think the latter would win. Released after her death from cancer, Minnie’s vocals are equally cute and sexy (nobody has done cute and sexy as well as Minnie did). It’s not the best-known track from the Minnie LP, but it is my favourite Riperton song.

Several of the songs here are touched by disco golddust. The Gary Toms Empire are perhaps more disco than soul. Former Motown writers Ashford & Simpson certainly were in their disco groove, and You Know How To Love Me by Phyllis Hyman (another wonderful soul singer who died too young, in 1995, the same year Bobby DeBarge, featured in the bonus tracks, died) is the sort of mid-tempo song one can dance or chill to.

Cheryl Lynn is better remembered for one of the great dance tracks, Got To Be Real. The track featured here, You’re The One, comes from the same eponymous 1978 album, one of the few ballads on the LP on which the 21-year-old Lynn delivered a fine, octave-traversing vocal performance. Signed by CBS on strength of her winning performance on the TV talent programme The Gong Show, Cheryl Lynn was a prodigious session singer too. It’s her soaring voice on Toto’s excellent Georgy Porgy, and she also backed Lenny Williams, whom we encounter in the bonus tracks.

Peabo Bryson does not have a good reputation among soul fans (with that name, it’s surprising he ever enjoyed any credibility), while Natalie Cole’s soul credentials have taken a knock with her endeavours to become her father. Don’t let such perceptions worry you as you hear their excellent jazzy cover of Bobby Caldwell’s What You Won’t Do For Love.

Jean Carn (later rendered as Carne, for “numerological” reasons) sang with Duke Ellington’s orchestra just before his death. Through her stint as a regular on US TV shows she was picked up by Gamble & Huff for their Philadelphia International Records label.

The Jones Girls also found success with Gamble & Huff, via two soul legends. The Chicago sisters were first mentored by Curtis Mayfield, through whom they got to work with Aretha Franklin. It was as a support act for Diana Ross that the Jones Girls — Shirley, Brenda and Valerie — came to Gamble & Huff’s attention. Besides releasing their own albums, they also provided backing vocals for the PIR roster.

Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson was cited by Jimi Hendrix as a major influence. He might also have been nicknamed “Organ”, for he played keyboard for Herb Alpert during the 1960s, reuniting with Alpert for his 1979 hit Rise [EDIT: Apparently he didn't. See comments]. Before that, the man known as “Elvis’ private guitar player” had toured with Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. Here he gets seriously funky, providing one of the few instances of snoring released on vinyl. Another legend, Wilson Pickett, made a brief comeback fusing the funk with old school soul, creating a sound which Tom Jones has tried to emulate for years, but never coming near his ambition.

The “Pops” in the title of the penultimate track is, of course, Berry Gordy, paid tribute here by four of the greatest stars in music history. I’d not have included it was it not for this year being Motown’s 50th birthday.

.

TRACKLISTING
1. Gary Toms Empire – Welcome To Harlem
2. Ashford & Simpson – It Seems To Hang On
3. Jean Carn – Don’t Let It Get To Your Head
4. Bill Withers – Love Is
5. Rufus and Chaka Khan – Stay
6. Cheryl Lynn - You’re The One
7. Denise LaSalle - A Miracle You And Me
8. Neville Brothers - Washable Ink
9. Minnie Riperton - Never Existed Before
10. Natalie Cole & Peabo Bryson – What You Won’t Do For Love
11. Phyllis Hyman – You Know How To Love Me
12. The Jones Girls – You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else
13. Johnny Guitar Watson – It’s A Damn Shame
14. Wilson Pickett – Lay Me Like You Hate Me
15. The Whispers - Let’s Go All The Way
16. D Ross, M Gaye, S Robinson, S Wonder – Pops, We Love You
17. Roberta Flack – And The Feeling’s Good

DOWNLOAD

.

At one point I thought of making this a two-part mix, because a bunch of longer numbers would fit on the mix, which I have kept, as always, to standard CD-R length. Instead, here are a few bonus tracks.

These include Betty Wright’s live recording of the song about losing her virginity, Lenny William’s fantastically overwrought lament of lost love (“…and then I played my records till I didn’t want to hear them no more), Mtume’s The Closer I Get To You which was a hit for Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack written by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, the O’Jay’s tribute to a dog, Kandidate’s proto ’80s soul sound, a track by Motown artists Switch who included two older DeBarge brothers, and more.

using System;

using System.Collections.Generic;

I don’t really know that much about The Big Pink except for the fact that they put out this sing-songy song called “Dominos” (awesomely remixed by Switch) and that they’re an “electro-rock” duo from London.

Said remix having sufficiently piqued my curiosity , I decided to hit play when I came across their cover of Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” on Stereogum and was more than pleasantly surprised at what I heard. It’s a great melody to begin with, but The Big Pink’s version lends the pop song a moodier, more contemplative tone—an almost unrecognizable transformation that I think is the mark of great musicianship.

Covers like these are really great intro points to artists that can blend into a really conventional music landscape (hence the airquotes around electro-rock). Some might argue it’s the easy way out of exploring a band’s own output, but I’m more likely to remember and return to an artist that does something memorable like this. Jump for linkage.

Salu2 maqueros!

It is Golden Time Lover by Sukima Switch which provide us with groovy kind of rythm into this song.

This song is really hype that I keep rewinding this song over and over again in my bedroom. Energetic and passion are the two words that can describe this song. Very suitable for FMA as well since the song is about grabbing a chance and make it a winner.

The sports theme in the PV is not bad at all and I like the story that is presented in the music video. Very suitable and I can’t believe that I see a rare breed of high quality music video from Japanese musician (You know, Japan is not the best when creating a music video).

Anyway, I like the song and for you who haven’t heard it, you are getting behind a very cool song. Enjoy!

Can’t focus. My body is still puzzled about what to do.
I’m trembling. I can’t stop even if I try to control myself.
Although neither the sun nor the moon are on my side,
“I’ve no choice but to try,” Those were the words I muttered to myself.

The odds aren’t on my side, but running away’d be gutless.
Even if I can’t see the future, I’ll just have to win it over with courage.
Need to keep distance from the target as I hold myself back.
All that’s needed for victory is the pride to win.

Will we celebrate with the wine of victory or’ll we end up kissing their feet in defeat?
There are two outcomers in everything. I want to control destiny.

It’s GAME SENSE to decipher the percentage of my winning chances
Is that silhouette the Devil?
If it’s a man then act like one and face your defeat with grace

A brand new FIGHTING STYLE, aim for the barely possible
ATTENTION It’s dangerous, exceed all limits

An awesome FAIRY TALE, etch it into history
so that you can show off the perfect victory
ARE YOU READY? Throw away those fogged doubts
Climb those babel stairs

A smile like that of a Goddess
I’m possessed by your charm
You invite me deeper as I fall

Last month we were all wowed by The XX’s remix of ‘You Got The Love’, they truly did raise the bar for remix quality and its unlikely that anyone who dares to remix that track in future will even touch their effort.

What I have here, is another quality Florence remix, this time by the legend named Switch. I’m not going to make comparisons with the previously mentioned remix as they’re worlds apart in style, but I’d say Switch is the only one to get close to that wow factor.

Thank God the NBA has some bit of sense. NBA.com is reporting that a leaguewide effort to retire No.

Thank God the NBA has some bit of sense.

NBA.com is reporting that a leaguewide effort to retire No. 23 is “unlikely.” Although, the report has no official quote from a league official, so, take it for what its worth.

Right now, there are 13 players wearing 23.

Here’s the report:

NEW YORK (AP) — LeBron James may persuade NBA players to give up their No. 23s, but a leaguewide retirement of Michael Jordan’s number seems unlikely.

James said on Thursday that he is considering switching his number next season and wants other players to do the same in honor of Jordan, the Hall of Famer who is often regarded as the league’s best player ever.

Major League Baseball retired Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 and the NHL did the same with Wayne Gretzky’s No. 99, but that hasn’t been done in the NBA. Spokesman Tim Frank said on Saturday that “retiring a player’s number is a decision that has been made by the teams” and not the league.

The NBA has no policy preventing every player wearing No. 23 from petitioning for a change, but players generally have to wear a number five years before they can switch.

There are 13 No. 23s in the NBA, though James is the only superstar. Oklahoma City rookie Byron Mullens ended up with the number after finding his preferred No. 32 was retired by the organization for Seattle SuperSonics great Fred Brown, and would be open to a switch.

“I don’t have a problem,” Mullens said. “I’m a rookie so I don’t have no say-so. It’s Jordan, man. His number should be retired from the NBA. If it is, then congratulations and good for him. If it’s not, then I guess I’ll stick to it. I was kidding around with my teammates, though. I told them, ‘Jordan’s going to have to pay me out.”‘

Knicks rookie Toney Douglas wasn’t so sure, saying he’s worn No. 23 since he was 3 years old.

Any players wanting to switch would have to officially notify the league by early March. James, who said he would probably change to No. 6, his number with the U.S. Olympic team, would not need permission to change if he leaves Cleveland as a free agent.

James first made his comments during an on-air interview on TNT following the Cavaliers’ victory over the Heat. Jordan was at the game in Miami — where Heat president Pat Riley retired the number in 2003 even though he never played for the franchise. No Miami player has worn No. 23 since Cedric Ceballos in 2001.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who coached Jordan in Chicago, endorsed the idea, though noted it might be “a little step on the toes for a guy like Magic (Johnson) or (Larry) Bird.”

That seems to be one reason for disagreement with James’ plan. Charles Barkley said after James’ interview that Johnson and Bird “had a greater impact on the game than Michael Jordan.”

The other players wearing No. 23 are: Kevin Martin (Sacramento), Stephen Graham (Charlotte), C.J. Watson (Golden State), Marcus Camby (Los Angeles Clippers), Jodie Meeks (Milwaukee), Devin Brown (New Orleans), Lou Williams (Philadelphia), Jason Richardson (Phoenix), Martell Webster (Portland) and Wesley Matthews (Utah).

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samurai could kill any common person who failed to show him proper respect. The Japanese were required to behave in precisely prescribed ways—wearing permitted clothing, walking only a certain way, sleeping with their heads pointing in a certain direction and legs arranged a particular way. Eating, greeting, gesturing with hands, opening doors and many work tasks had to be done in assigned ways without deviation. Conduct became a measure of morality, and virtue in manners was visible for all to see. Even today, the code of conduct plays a significant role in the lives of the Japanese. Many societies, not Japan alone, have a prescribed form and manner for every familiar situation that might arise. Unforeseen situations can cause intense embarrassment or discomfort. Throughout East Asia, actions are judged by the manner in which they are performed. More important than the accomplishment of a task is the question of how someone went about trying to complete the task: Did he act sincerely? More important than winning the race is the grace of the runner. More important than expertise is the way one gets along with others. More important than profits is harmony. In contrast, Westerners and particularly Americans are more concerned with the principles of things, hard “measures” and objective facts. Although rules of ethics are extremely important, we are more goal oriented than method-conscious, we say “a good loser is a loser.”

One aspect of form is the concept of “face.” Much has been written about “face-saving” in Japan and China, but face-saving is important absolutely everywhere. The difference is only a matter of degree and nuance. Where an American might feel a little guilty or inadequate, an Asian, Arab or South American may feel deep shame and humiliation. What an American might see as a little honest and constructive criticism, the foreigner may take as a devastating blow to pride and dignity. A foreigner is likely to be sensitive to feelings of others in transactions that an American would consider strictly impersonal, such as returning a defective product or switching hairdressers. The traveler simply must be more conscious of saying things or behaving in ways that cannot be taken as disrespect, criticism or humiliation. In some countries it seems just about anything can be taken personally, even such indirect affronts as not taking your shoes off in a mosque or complaining about the heat.

Harmony with the environment can be as important as sensitivity to people in some cultures. In Japan a woman wears a soft pastel dress to a flower show so as not to take away from the beauty of the flowers. In countries where people believe in reincarnation they are careful about all forms of life. In India, for example, people are careful not to swallow gnats or step on ants—one might be a relative.
