Jabber is described most often as a frame greater than the maximum of 1518 bytes with a bad CRC. A jabbering NIC is often indicative of a hardware problem with a NIC or transceiver.

Not too much today. Got some old switches and some high quality switches by Cutler-Hammer, aerospace controls division. The most interesting item is that thing that looks like a clock. It’s a ten turn, 20K ohm potentiometer, made by Bourns inc. I’ve never seen this kind before. A real class act.

Just saw that Hewlett Packard is acquiring 3Com for deal valued at around $2.7 billion.

3Com will also provide Hewlett Packard with its TippingPoint portfolio which is a network security system.

HP says the acquisition will further its data center strategy “built on the convergence of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services.” The acquisition of 3Com also help to expand HP’s Ethernet switching offerings, add routing solutions and significantly strengthen the company’s position in China thanks to 3Com’s strong presence in China.

3Com took in $1.3 billion in revenue last year on its networking and securities solutions products. The Marlborough, Mass.-based company mostly does business with corporate clients, and its H3C networking unit is a market leader in China.

HP  said it made the acquisition to expand its networking solutions offerings and to “significantly strengthen the company’s position in China.”

Over the past year, HP has increased its services and business solutions business exponentially, catapulted by its $13.9 billion acquisition of services firm EDS last year.

3Com will bring a wide-ranging portfolio of network switching, routing and security solutions to HP. The technology will boost HP’s already potent networking offerings, which are centered in HP Procurve.

“By acquiring 3Com, we are accelerating the execution of our converged infrastructure strategy and bringing disruptive change to the networking industry, HP executive vice president Dave Donatelli said in a statement.

HP’s converged infrastructure architecture, announced Nov. 4, essentially creates a one-stop data-center shop. It packages HP’s compute, storage, networking offerings into a highly virtualized bundle which can be centrally managed.

That move came shortly after Cisco linked up with EMC and VMware in a partnership which tightly integrates storage alongside easy-to-manage virtualized data-center bundles called V-Blocks.

Vitesse-Based Gbit Ethernet Switches Support PoE

Silicon Laboratories and Vitesse Semiconductor have released multiple reference designs to enable easy upgrades for Vitesse-based Gbit Ethernet switches. These upgrades will allow the Gbit Ethernet switches to support the recently ratified IEEE 802.3at Power over Ethernet (PoE+) standard. Two new reference designs combine Silicon Laboratories’ highly integrated, energy-efficient PoE Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) controllers and the Vitesse E-Stax and Sparx Gbit Ethernet switching chipsets for 24-port stackable and five- to 24-port workgroup and desktop switches, respectively.

The first joint design is a PSE daughtercard for E-Stax and Sparx-II switches. The plug-in daughtercard features an isolated I2C interface, self-contained operation from an isolated PoE supply (54V nom.) and efficient thermal profiling. The design supports 24 ports at up to 30W each with full IEEE 802.3at compliance. Multiple daughtercards can interoperate on a single I2C host interface for high port-count scalability. Switch-host software integration and an independent PoE power supply enable a single-switch motherboard design appropriate for PoE and non-PoE SKUs.

The second design is a single-motherboard implementation for the Sparx-G8e switch. Supporting eight ports of PoE (15.4W) or PoE+ (30W) capability and Vitesse’s web-based configuration and power-management GUI, this complete PoE-enabled switch is intended for applications such as desktop switches, VoIP telephony, wireless-access points, industrial networking, video surveillance and security systems.

Both reference designs include schematics, bill of materials and comprehensive PCB layout files for fastest time-to-market and design success. Silicon Labs’ Power Manager Software Development Kit (SDK) allows system developers to quickly develop highly differentiated PSE systems with sophisticated power-management features to minimise power-supply costs and maximise energy efficiency. Based on Silicon Labs’ Si345x PoE+ PSE controller family, designers can take advantage of real-time power-measurement capabilities.

The Si345x incorporates high-precision current and voltage-measurement capability to monitor the power consumed by each port, enabling systems to maintain tighter control of power allocation, which translates to smaller power supplies and lower supply overhead and gives system administrators visibility into how much power is allocated to and consumed by each port in their network. Link layer discovery protocol (LLDP) power management algorithms are implemented at the system level, enabling dynamic power allocation. Vitesse’s E-Stax products feature its Vstax cabling technology, a scalable high-speed 24+4 port configuration, a performance-driven architecture and a rich integrated feature set to deliver low-cost Gbit Ethernet for OEM and ODM customers.

The Sparx unmanaged and smart web-managed switches eliminate the need for external processing and memory found in fully managed switches, allowing developers to deliver a smart switch with advanced Layer-2 capabilities at a fraction of the cost of a fully managed switch. Sparx switches also include Vitesse’s Ecoethernet technology, which delivers green savings equivalent to more than 400mW per port. Both product families are ideal for Carrier Ethernet applications as they support synchronous Ethernet with SSM according to ITU-G.8264/Y.1362 and offer fast protection switching with switching times significantly below the 50ms telecom requirement.

Andy just asked this question on the site, I’d never really given it much thought but as it’s one of those things that crops up in a lot of games I thought it warranted it’s own tutorial.

So setup your weapon as per usual (a tutorial on how to do this is coming soon).

Within the Tool Map event for that weapon you’ll want to go to the move route and at the top of the list turn on a switch, let’s call this the “BREAKING” switch.

Next, go to the DATABASE and create a new common event set out with the following parameters:

Name: Broken Weapon

Trigger: Parallel

Condition Switch: “BREAKING”

In the common event itself create a new conditional switch as follows:

Variable “HITS” is greater than or equal to X.

(where X is obviously the amount of hits you want to allow your hero to have using this weapon)

Under the first part of this condition switch change your hero’s equipment to none (or broken weapon if you want to make a separate, less powerful version of the same weapon) and subtract the weapon from your hero’s inventory (and replace it with the broken version). Lastly, turn off the “BREAKING” switch.

In the second half of this conditional branch add 1 to the “HITS” variable and turn off the “BREAKING” switch.

And you’re done!

Out came a panoply of toys, cat on nines, beautiful butter soft suede braided turquoise flogger, a feather boa flogger, and a bunch of other things. I should have paid attention to the other things.

“Pick one thing you want me to use.”

I picked the turquoise flogger.

“Go put that and your ropes over there, near the cross.”

“Yes ma’am,” I said under my breath.

The cross was beautiful, sturdy, seductive and halfway into the kitchen.

I rarely take my clothes off in public. This many people was ‘in public’ to me.

“Take off your top.” She said in my ear.

I threw it on the floor and faced the cross.

She bound my arms. There was no wiggle room. ~smile~

“Your bra has to come off.”

The cross was cold but soon it would be warm.

She grabbed my hair and trailed something pointy on my skin.

Felt hot breath on my neck. I leaned back into it.

I found myself staring at a counter full of empty glasses. It was distracting. She blindfolded me.

“Those pants have to come down.”

Gulp. The slacks went down to my ankles and the panties just below the curve. She began with spanking, on my butt, just enough to redden it. She’s been there before.

Next came the floggers; I don’t remember which because she kept changing them, but the impact increased and then came toys that were stingier. Each level made me climb that cross higher and higher. My butt stuck out more, looking for more, getting more.

“Spread those legs. I’m going to get culinary. Do you like olives?”

“Yes. I’m made of olives.”

I could feel the gleam in her eyes.

Whatever made me say that?

She lubed her hands with olive oil and slid them between my legs. She pushed her body against mine. Both of us moved the heavy cross further into the kitchen. Both of us were breathing hard. I moaned and climbed, and climaxed.

“I’ll be right back,” she whispered.

My body pulsed. I was on my toes and still trying to climb up the cross.

“Do you want to dance?”

“Yes, thank you. I’d love to dance.”

There was a slight delay in the light bulb reflex.

“Somehow, I don’t think that’s the kind of dance you are talking about.”

She zapped me! I jumped from shock more than pain as she gleefully tested every square inch of my butt. Where was I going to go? I was tired and drained.

A sheer green something was draped over my body. She whispered in my ear. “Not your average Saturday night is it.”

Robyn Hitchcock – Sleeping with Your Devil Mask
One of my favorite all-time tracks from my favorite absurdist. Although his music can sometimes be a hard sell because of his overall weirdness, this track in particular couldn’t get any catchier, and the lyrics couldn’t get much weirder.

As to what he’s on about? Who knows. Could be a dark, bitter relationship song. Could be a fatalistic parable of the ultimate death of us all. Could be a headful of acid committed to paper (and then instruments, I suppose). It could just be the sort of thing that drives certain people to yell inappropriately during Robyn’s occasional solo acoustic sets. Whatever it is, it’s worth listening to several hundred times.

HEALTH – Die Slow
From out of L.A. and sounding like m83 with Holy Fuck’s rhythm section (such as it were) and the Killing Joke’s guitars, HEALTH combine the airy, subdued vocals of a million shoegazer bands with the guitar/drum attack of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails (but running about half-speed). While the drums beat you into submission, the vocals and synth lines float above the fray, as if immune to the chaos underpinning them.

A Place to Bury Strangers – Deadbeat
One of my all-time favorite bands despite having only been around since 2006. Picking up the shattered amps and eardrums of the Jesus and Mary Chain, New York’s “loudest band” is all about returning feedback to its rightful place as “lead guitar.” This particular track opens with a very Cramps-like intro before plunging neck deep into swirling drones and piercing feedback, all the while being shoved forward by the rhythm section like G20 protesters in front of a SWAT team.

Oliver Ackerman’s laconic vocals seal the deal, with his futile question to a heartbreaking lover: “What? What the fuck? Don’t mess with my heart.”

Fuck Buttons – Olympians
Fuck. Yes. The Fuck Buttons return triumphantly with a new album, Tarot Sport. Building on their psychedelic and psychotic drums and distortion of their debut, the Buttons add some shimmering synths and build a more expansive and melodic groove from the claustrophobic psych-noise of Street Horrrsing.

The lead single is Surf Solar, which is incredible and the most immediately striking track on the album. But Olympians has been the grower, echoing back to their previous work (especially Sweet Love for Planet Earth). It builds from nearly nothing, just a fuzzed-out synth before the drums come rolling in. As you begin to feel that yes, this is nice and pounding but could get a little tiring after 4 or 5 minutes, the boys bring in an organ. As these tones begin to intertwine with the groove, some gorgeous synth pads pop up out of nowhere, like shafts of unexpected sunlight on a dark, cloudy day.

And then the distortion returns, calming our fears that the Fuck Buttons had gone all soft and synthy on us. The kind of cripplingly beautiful epic that comes around too rarely.

I feel very strongly about of the lack of information about switches.  I’ve been very vocal on several bdsm boards about discrimination, misinformation, and myths clouding our reputations as play partners.  My goal was to illuminate, demystify, and provoke dialogue.

The presentation was geared to dominants and submissives.  What a surprise.  With the exception of two people, the attendees were switches.  <Insert broad grin> It was a curve ball, but a pleasant one.  As I began the session literally straddling an invisible line, each face turned into expressions of recognition.   It was as if finally, we were on the same page but on different paragraphs.

ALL the attendees added their two cents worth and the time flew by.  We shared experiences and talked about solutions.   We became a small self contained support group.  I felt that all of us walked away with food for thought and discussion.   You can find my notes here:  Switches’ Dilemma
