Sometimes you need to get your attackers to turn and head for goal.

You need practice to get a good first touch

If you want a player who can take a pass and turn with confidence knowing that his initial touch on the ball will be good enough it involves a lot of practice.

This is what I do with my players. Using the diagram above, the striker receives the ball, turns to his left (particularly if he is right footed) and then moves to the first cone and sprints with the ball to the second cone. You need to get players A and B serving the ball in so he gets used to the ball coming from different angles.

• A and B – 10 metres apart – serve to the striker.
• He comes forward collects and turns to his left.
• Then sprints between two cones – 5 metres away.
• The two cones should be no more than 2 metres apart.

How to advance it

Keep the dimensions the same but tell your striker to turn to his right, using either the outside of his right foot, or even better his left foot – his weaker foot – to control turn and sprint through the two cones.

What you want to see is a sharp turn – not wide – so that players are under pressure to take good control of the ball. The ball should be close to the feet of your striker all the time he is turning.

Shame Robin van Persie has been injured. He has the turns the skills and the shots that are ideal to show young players what they can aim for.

I was going to tell you all about my birthday presents and show you a movie of me trying out the Nina Ottossen “Dog Brick” but we have been feeling very guilty that we have not done any Tricky T-Day posts for AGES so I thought I’d show you this video first and do a post about my presents on the weekend…

Well, my human, Hsin-Yi, has been trying to teach me to pivot for a few months now, although we don’t train this very often so I am only learning it slowly…

Hsin-Yi would like to turn this into a dance step for our next routine – and she also always admired the Obedience dogs doing their sharp ‘Left-Hand Turns’…a lot of people told her that she could never teach me to do this now that I’m grown up, because I didn’t learn it as a puppy – and of course, you know what happens when people tell Hsin-Yi that she can’t do something…she just can’t resist the challenge of proving them wrong!

First, I had to learn to target something with my front paws and keeping them in that place while I swivel my bum around…then I had to do this with Hsin-Yi standing next to me…and then I had to do this without a target! Once I was pivoting well next to Hsin-Yi without a target, she started making me Heel for short distances and then pivot in a Left-Hand Turn. I’m still not very good at it but I’m getting better all the time!

Pivoting is a great way for us doggies to learn “rear-end awareness”. In my case, I guess it helped that I had already learnt to back up, which already taught me “rear-end awareness” and also my sideways Crab-walk that I do facing Hsin-Yi. But it was still a new thing for me to learn, especially as us big doggies aren’t so agile at moving parts of our bodies around!

Geometric patterns in concentric tracks for a swiveling cannon mount.

News organizations are increasingly integrating interactive methods in order to connect with audiences and enable audience members to collaborate in the process of determining and distributing the news.  The Poynter Institute is on the front line of this movement and Ellyn Angelotti is leading the charge.

Angelotti, the Interactivity Editor of Poynter Online, joined us in class today via Skype.  Among the topics of conversation was a communications model she has proposed that she has appropriately coined The New News Cycle.

The NNC outlines how “passive publications are becoming interactive applications.”  According to Angelotti, new interactive technologies and capabilities have turned the old communication models on their heads.  No longer is the news distribution process a closed circle that begins with the news broadcast and ends with a nice neat package landing in the consumer’s lap.  The circle is now a never ending figure eight in which audiences are no longer audiences, but are instead shapers, contributors, and even creators of news content.

This new cycle has helped spark a rejuvenated emphasis on vetting sources and validating content.  Online news videos are using less of the authoritative voice over that was prevalent in their offline predecessors.  Instead, they rely more on organic story telling methods driven by natural sound.  It’s an exciting time to be an online journalist, and Angelotti embodies that promise and enthusiasm.

In addition to her updated news distribution model, Angelotti shared some unique examples of the interactive spirit in action.   Swivel is an online data visualization tool that allows anyone to easily convert a dry, granular spreadsheet into a dynamic visual representation.  Swivel can construct graphs and tables and can even map data when appropriate.  In true interactive fashion, the site also includes a collaborative component, making it possible for multiple users to contribute data to the same study.

She also introduced the class to Mixed Ink.  Much like Swivel, Mixed Ink’s mission is to make data useful. Their adage is simple; many people, one voice.  The site hosts a collaborative writing tool and invites users to “connect, collaborate, and be heard.”  Users are encouraged to contribute to cooperative writings that range from The People’s Inaugural Address composed this past January to The Cases For & Against Sotomayor written this summer.

Angelotti suggested that Mixed Ink host the new health care reform proposal.  Now there’s a bill we could all get behind.  Literally.

I just checked out the new Nokia Twist! It’s available thru Verizon. I usually don’t take too much interest in Verizon phones. This is definitely a first for me. This phone is really unique in it’s design. It’s a small square with a hinge on the bottom right that allows you to swivel the screen upward to reveal the keyboard. It has a changeable battery cover so you can really personalize it to your style. It has a full querty keyboard that is laid out very well. Nokia would like to emphasize that the packaging is made from recycled materials and the charger helps preserve power. The phone has a 3 mega pixel  camera. SD card slot. Stereo Bluetooth and is email capable. A really nice mid range phone with a very unique design.

How do you think about driving your swivels?

I have found that in dancing, you can think about driving your swivels with your hips, or with your heels.

1) Driving with your hips: I really like lots of dynamic in swivels, and using your hips to rotate around more can look really good. Something to be wary of when using your hips more is taking over the lead by being so noisy and distracted with your bigger swivels that you are no longer following.

- Also, if you swivel and straighten your leg as you step onto your other foot, one hip will raise higher than the other – I try to swivel and keep my hips on an even plane to keep my stretch away from the lead and not tilty. It also helps to keep hips on an even plane when trying to swivel faster (but this isn’t a rule and if you want to hit something in the music, sometimes it is fun to throw a little more side hip raise into things).

2) Driving with your feet: I have found that if I swivel and just try to have my heels, as I step down, point towards the opposite wall, then it minimizes my hip movement, draws more attention to my legs, and allows me to swivel even on very fast songs. When I think about my heels driving my swivels, my body just follows along with it, and they come really easily.

Practice tip: To really work on your swivels, tie a tether to a pole and look in a mirror as you swivel and hang off of the tether. Also, pick a follow whose swivels you really like, download that onto your computer, tape yourself swiveling – then watch and compare your swivel’s to that follow and how where they are stepping etc., see the differences between yours and her’s and it can help you figure out how you want to change/create more options for your swivel.

Back in May, we saw a Nokia handset that had a swivel to it. Well, Nokia has just announced that the Twist 7705 will be hitting Verizon in “select NYC locations” on September 13th, and everyone else nation-wide will get their hands on it on the 21st of this month. The Twist 7705 has: a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a 3MP AF camera with a flash, a microSDHC card slot, Bluetooth, a full HTML browser, and a QWERTY keypad. This handset is expected to launch for $99.99 USD on a 2-year contract after a $50 rebate, $169.99 on a 1-year contract after rebates, and $279.99 off-contract.

Back in April, there were some rumours on an upcoming E-series swivel phone with QWERTY. The image on the left was a of a mock-up based on BGR sources’ first hand impression.

Hideous was the first word to pop into my mind. Next were horrendous monstrosity. But then again, it is just a mock-up. The actual leaked photos of the Nokia N900/Rover/RX-51 looked completely different and utterly beautiful compared to Mobile Crunch’s render (when closed anyway). Was there hope for the same in this swivel QWERTY?

All we could do was wait for Nokia to announce it or leak some pics.

Well, Chinese knock-offs have got there first. We shouldn’t be surprised in clones appearing before the original even had confirmation of existing – the same people that brought us the NokLa E97 (simply based on a concept design by Fabien Nauroy) has produced the NokLa E81.

Admittedly, this 90 degree QWERTY swivel phone doesn’t look half bad. It’s petite and quite feminine looking, especially with that mirror thing going on. Plus the owner could probably wear it as a necklace (just put a chain through the swivel hole), not to mention that there’s something girly about being a swivel form factor (ha, or maybe it’s just because the last swivel was the effeminate 7373?)

Technique is vital in youth soccer. I watched the highlights of a few matches in the US Soccer Development Academy Finals and one of the games that stood out was PDA v Cal Odyssey U15s.

In the match highlights the team that wins – Cal – shows two great bits of skill at either end of the pitch where technique comes through for the winners. The Cal goalkeeper saves a penalty and the Cal striker controls then swivels on a pass and scores in the corner.

Technique for both goalkeeper and striker is the winning difference.

I was just drooling over the fab interior design spotlighted on Furniture Fashion, and I couldn’t help noticing that these chairs look a lot like our MDZ-1025s — a stylish choice for any home or office.

I finished this cut out yesterday I think – all the days are merging into one long day..

So the image above just shows what the back of the piece will look like. I was wanting to get them silver plated before asessment but it is just not going to happen. One of the girls in class today said when you estimate how long it is going to take to make something, you double it and then double it again. That is quite right in my case.

Here in these images I was trying to get an idea of what different types of hanging mechanisms would look like. I am moving more towards the pocket watch swivel in the lower image.

This image was taken at approx 12:30am by my partner in crime. This is after probably 3 days of rubbing on emery paper on the flat bed to get it perfect, but nay it still is not. I have  also rubbed my palms raw. 

I am very please with the way this piece is heading..

Nikon D5000 de frente, por cima

[ Atualizado] A Nikon anunciou hoje a D5000, uma nova câmera para o mercado amador que deverá substituir a D60 neste segmento. Seguindo a tendência do momento, a D5000 é capaz de capturar vídeos em alta-definição com 1280 x 720 pixels no formato avi e duração de até 5 minutos (formatos menores vão até 20 minutos). A grande novidade fica por conta do monitor móvel, que facilita na captura de vídeos.

Outras características interessantes são o sensor, agora com 12,9 megapixels, o mesmo da D90. A faixa de sensibilidade padrão vai de ISO 200 a ISO 3200 agora, podendo chegar até ISO 6400 como opção. Usando a qualidade de imagem da D90 em ISO alto como referência, é bem provável que a nova D5000 também caia no gosto dos usuários para fotografar em locais mais escuros (embora talvez não tanto como na D700 e D3).

As novidades, como captura de vídeos, monitor dobrável e maior sensibilidade, são muito interessantes, com certeza. Mas em se tratando de uma câmera para o mercado amador, e portanto de operação supostamente mais fácil, me surpreende a ausência de um segundo disco na frente da câmera para a seleção direta de abertura, presente em todas as outras câmeras acima dela. Pode parecer um mero detalhe, mas faz uma diferença enorme no manuseio da câmera. Observe na imagem abaixo que o fotógrafo tem que manter o botão seletor de abertura pressionado enquanto gira o disco atrás da câmera. Não é uma novidade da D5000. As anteriores D40, D50 e D60 também eram assim. O que deveria ser fácil, fica bem mais díficil de usar, na minha opinião.
