After deciding to write a blog on famous people with psychiatric illnesses I realized that this is a very sensitive topic. I realized it after seeing several web pages (1-2-3) with lists of famous people, celebrities with different psychiatric diagnoses. The list included contemporary artists from Robin Williams to Jim Carrey. Even in a yahoo answers page one was asking ” Does Robin Williams have really bipolar disorder?” (Yes, I myself have heard it several times, too). Someone chooses to answer that question this way “I don’t know. It might be. But look I have found this page” People loove hearing bad things about people, it is either a psychiatric disease, or another diagnosis. People are curious about the famous people, which is normal and has always been like that. But 1) Who are we to say anything? R.Williams has never confirmed that he had bipolar disorder says one web page. So what are we going to do with that? 2) Whatever is in the internet must be true (!). It is amazing how internet allows us to reach the information so fast and so wide. Here in Canada, in a TV station, in the news they were talking about how people quit using encyclopedias. This is the dark side of the internet. So, I will leave the living people alone, and list only 10 famous people who had been known as patients with psychiatric disorders.

Who has what? can also be confusing in terms of politics. In the list of people who committed suicide (famous people , of course) we see the name of the socialist leader from Chile Salvador Allende with a note like this “shot himself during a coup d’état by General Augusto Pinochet — some sources allege that he was killed. See also Death of Salvador Allende” “.

You see “the famous psychiatric patients” list might not only come to a “stupid paparazzi story to feed public’ s craving to know the bad things about the famous” “; it also can be used as a political weapon. By the way; the naked truth that Allende was killed or not, is not our subject here.

Another topic, which is quite interesting, is the relation between creativity and psychiatric disease, particularly affective disorder. The literature on that topic is huge. My ex-boss, a great scientist and a well-known psychiatrist in the world Nancy Andreasen from University of Iowa studies this topic, as she is a former academician of English literature, she studies writers. Here is a nice document on that topic titled as “Affective Disorders and Creativity: A Blessing or a Curse“ for the curious reader.

Finally, below you will see information on 10 famous psychiatric patients I have chosen from the history. Another blog with a similar title might be ordinary people who became famous after their psychiatric conditions, most of whom found place in the brain research literature with their initials due to confidentiality. The brain researchers learned a lot from them. This, however, is a topic of another blog.

As a medical doctor, and a man who has studied the brain I say “NO” to the stigma. People are people, and not disorders.

P.S.: Of those web pages I mentioned in the first sentence, I think you will find the pages with “famous suicide notes” (1-2) interesting.

1- Syd Barret

He was as a founding member of psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, providing major musical and stylistic direction in their early work, although he left the group in 1968 amidst speculations of mental illness as a consequence of, or exacerbated by heavy drug use.

Well…What can one say about the legends of Rock: Pink Floyd? It is Pink Floyd; and I think no more definition is needed.

Syd Barret suffered from schizophrenia and drug use probably co-morbid to his disease. As you will also see in the video below, the character in the Wall “the rock singer Pink” was actually Syd (Remember the scene where Pink smokes and does not feel the pain while the finished cigarette burning his finger; it is a typical symptom of schizophrenia where patients do not recognize such pain). The Wall was the boldest critique ever made to the “system”.

During his withdrawal from public life there were numerous works about him, most notably his former band Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here.

After battling diabetes for several years, Barrett died at his home in Cambridge on Friday 7 July 2006. He was 60 years old. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, but this was usually reported as “complications from diabetes”. The occupation on his death certificate was given as “retired musician.” He was cremated, with his ashes given to a family member or friend.

Syd was an important figure in the music field and inspired millions. He is missed by Pink Floyd fans. R.I.P.

2- Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was the as the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of the rock band Nirvana. He was suffering from major depression and substance abuse as a co-morbid illness.

Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington, United States on April 8, 1994. He had checked out of a drug rehab facility and been reported suicidal by his wife Courtney Love. The Seattle Police Department incident report states that Cobain was found with a shotgun across his body, had a visible head wound and there was a suicide note discovered nearby. The King County Medical Examiner noted that there were puncture wounds on the inside of both the right and left elbow. The Seattle Police Department investigated, and after an autopsy by the King County Coroner’s Office, Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide by a single gunshot blast coming from his jaw then exiting through the top of his head.

3- Sigmund Freud

 Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology. He was an early user and proponent of cocaine as a stimulant as well as analgesic. He wrote several articles on the antidepressant qualities of the drug. It is believed that his death was by a physician-assisted morphine overdose.

4- Vincent Van Gogh

There are numerous articles in scientific journals about the psychiatric diagnosis of Van Gogh. In a paper a few years ago, I had read that there were more than a dozen possible diagnoses for him, affective disorder being only one of them. I think the research for his diagnosis of this great painter could be the topic of several postings. Whatever it was, he was one of the greatest painters ever lived.

5- Ernest Hemingway

He was an was an American writer and journalist. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls are the two novels among other important novels written by him. In the spring of 1961, three months after his initial treatment at the Mayo where he received a series of ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy;also known as electroschock used for the treatment of depression) treatment, Hemingway attempted suicide. Mary convinced Saviers to hospitalize Hemingway at Sun Valley hospital and from there he returned to the Mayo where he was “given ten more shock treatments.” Weighing only 155 pounds, Hemingway was released from the Mayo in late June and arrived in Ketchum on June 30. On the morning of July 2, 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself with his rifle. Arriving at 7:40 a.m., Dr. Scott Earle certified the death.^[119] At request of the family, the coroner did not do an autopsy.

6- Adolf Hitler

In the final days of the war, at the fall of Berlin in 1945, Hitler married his long-time mistress Eva Braun. Facing capture by Soviet forces less than two days later, the two committed suicide.

7- Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He successfully led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery.

Abraham Lincoln himself was contemporaneously described as suffering from “melancholy” throughout his legal and political life, a condition which modern mental health professionals would now typically characterize as clinical depression.

8- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

By mid-1788, Mozart and his family had moved from central Vienna to the suburb of Alsergrund. Although it has been thought that Mozart reduced his rental expenses, recent research shows that by moving to the suburb Mozart had certainly not reduced his expenses (as claimed in his letter to Puchberg), but merely increased the housing space at his disposal.Mozart began to borrow money, most often from his friend and fellow Mason Michael Puchberg; “a pitiful sequence of letters pleading for loans” survives. Maynard Solomon and others have suggested that Mozart was suffering from depression, and it seems that his output slowed.

In 1791, Mozart was afflicted by morbid depression. Mozart was commissioned to compose the “Requiem Mass” (music for the dead) from a mysterious stranger (actually from a nobleman, who wanted to pass it off as his own work), which Mozart misinterpreted as a pronouncement of his own death. Mozart could not finish the “Requiem”.

On December 5, 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died after a fit of delirium and probably from uraemia. One of the greatest composers of all time, Mozart died a pauper and was buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave in Vienna.

9- George Sanders

Sanders was an Academy Award-winning English film and television actor.

In 1950 Sanders drew his greatest popular and commercial success as the acerbic, cold-blooded theater critic Addison DeWitt in All About Eve, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

David Niven wrote in his autobiography Bring On the Empty Horses that his friend Sanders, in 1937 at the age of 31, had predicted he would commit suicide when he was 65. On 23 April, 1972 he checked into a hotel in Castelldefels, a coastal town near Barcelona. He was found dead two days later, having taken five bottles of Nembutal. Sanders was 65 years old. He left behind a suicide note which read:  

Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck.

Sanders’ body was cremated and the ashes were scattered in the English Channel.

10- Virginia Woolf

Woolf was an English novelist, essayist, epistler, publisher, feminist, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century.

After completing the manuscript of her last (posthumously published) novel, Between the Acts, Woolf fell victim to a depression similar to that which she had earlier experienced. The onset of World War II, the destruction of her London home during the Blitz, and the cool reception given to her biography of her late friend Roger Fry all worsened her condition until she was unable to work.

On 28 March 1941, Woolf committed suicide. She put on her overcoat, filled its pockets with stones, then walked into the River Ouse near her home and drowned herself. Woolf’s skeletonised body was not found until 18 April. Her husband buried her cremated remains under a tree in the garden of their house in Rodmell, Sussex.

In her last note to her husband she wrote:

” I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can’t go through another of those terrible times. And I cant recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can’t concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do. You have given me the greatest possible happiness. You have been in every way all that anyone could be. I don’t think two people could have been happier ’til this terrible disease came. I can’t fight any longer. I know that I am spoiling your life, that without me you could work. And you will I know. You see I can’t even write this properly. I can’t read. What I want to say is I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me and incredibly good. I want to say that — everybody knows it. If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can’t go on spoiling your life any longer. I don’t think two people could have been happier than we have been. V.”

Syd barret, pues sí, este muchachito estaba en drogas jajaa y se creó un mito y una fama enorme y exagerada. Lider al principio de Pink Floyd, ok genial. Pero no me muero por escucharlo, no creo que haya pasado de la primera fase de creador y por meritos propios se disolvió del grupo y seguro luego de su propia vida…para no haber vuelto a aparecer es porque realmente se tostó. La locura a veces es cosa seria (si te limita en la vida podemos decir que no es positiva).

Roger Waters, siempre tan positivo… luego de separarse de Pink Floyd y del Muro no paró de hacer muritos, toda su música se encaminó en la misma dirección, más blues, más electrónica, más actual en letras, como sea, muy encasillado…bueno, a mi me encanta, es cuestión de gustos, como siempre. Conceptual hasta la muerte, cada CD ha sido una nueva versión con un nuevo enfoque… A mi parecer ha hecho de sus traumas un gran negocio.

Algún día conversando con un amigo me hablaba del sufrimiento de Waters…y yo pensando que no puede ser tanto si has hecho un buen negocio de tus problemas…cual locura o cual dolor puede ser tan grande si has tenido tiempo de pensarla, escribirla, musicalizarla y hacer plata con esto?

Bueno, no soy el mayor simpatizante de Syd y terminé hablando muy bien de él y sí me considero un ciego creyente de Roger Waters y acabo destrozándole su medio de vida jajaja

Este CD es sobre las pesadillas, se divide en minutos y los viajes pidiendo auto stop…genial. Era la época en que siempre salía en las entrevistas y videos con la cara en alguna sombra (mejor que una máscara). Siempre pesimista.

Ahora sobre el consumismo y su visión positiva de las cosas. Obviamente.

Bueno, la comparación  de genios es sobre lo que significa hacerse el loco y vivir de esto y otra es estar realmente loco. Lo primero puede ser cuestionable pero es parte del Show y este debe continuar, lo segundo no pasa de dar tristeza y te mueres en el incógnito y con suerte te conviertes en una leyenda…

“Qué curioso”, habrá pensando alguien mientras leía el título de esta entrada…  “¡Qué casualidad!”. El mismo de la canción a la cual recientemente dedicó mikebald  un espacio  en esa categoría que, de primera mano, sé que tiene tanto éxito entre vosotros y vosotras. Pero ya deberíais saber, y digo esto porque cada vez que puedo os lo cuento, que no hay casualidad que valga si detrás de ésta anda un determinista. Y es que aunque al otro lado no lo supiérais, como es lógico —puesto que no podrías haberlo descubierto a menos que fuérais el hacker de la oficina—, tenía preparado este post desde hacía bastante tiempo. Pero como de costumbre, aún no había dado con el momento adecuado para publicarlo.

De manera que aprovechando la coyuntura, os presento Wish You Were Here, por cierto, otra de las muchas joyas musicales acerca de las que Carlos hablaba durante aquellas mañanas sabatinas, en la lengua del Almirante Nelson, y que un servidor no dudaba en anotar en el cuaderno como si de las diversas acepciones de “fit” se tratara. Anécdotas personales aparte, el tema es obra de otros ilustres británicos, Pink Floyd. Compuesto por Roger Waters y David Gilmour, e incluido en el álbum homónimo fechado en 1975 , el “ojalá estuvieras aquí” del título se refiere a su ex compañero  Syd Barret, quien abandonó la banda siete años atrás.

Wish You Were Here fue el trabajo que acogió a la versión más conocida y la que protagoniza estas líneas. Pero no fue la única. De hecho,  en 1995, apareció en P•U•L•S•E una versión en directo que se convirtió en uno de los últimos sencillos del grupo —Pink Floyd se disolvió poco después—.  Además de ésta, dos más vieron la luz en sendos recopilatorios, A Collection of Great Dance Songs de 1981 y Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd de 2001. Y todas ellas con la etiqueta de Rock progresivo.

Quizás esto os parezca una estupidez, pero si la pista fuera un cuadro estaríamos ante un tríptico. Me explico porque tiene su aquel. Comienza con los sonidos característicos del ir y venir entre las emisoras de una radio, seguidos por la plática entre dos voces —suponemos que correspondientes a un representante de cada sexo—,  es decir, exactamente lo mismo que puede escucharse al final de la canción anterior en el listado, Have a Cigar. En adelante disfrutamos de la Wish You Were Here propiamente dicha, salpicada de los riffs de Gilmour y el scat —esos monosílabos que se oyen una y otra vez— de Waters. No obstante, los últimos compases se convierten en un nuevo guiño hacia otro de los temas del disco. En esta ocasión será Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) el encargado de ceder esa especie de vendaval de sus segundos iniciales a modo de cierre.

Em 1940, Liverpool, Inglaterra, nascia Richard Starkey, filho de Richard e Elsie Starkey. É mais conhecido como Ringo Starr, baterista dos Beatles.

Em 1990 morria o cantor e compositor Cazuza, em Boston, EUA, de choque séptico causado pela AIDS, aos 32 anos.

E em 2006, o guitarrista co-fundador do Pink Floyd, Syd Barret, em Cambridge, Inglaterra, supostamente de complicações da diabetes que sofria, aos 60 anos.

Syd Barret var en av grunnleggerne av det britiske rockebandet Pink Floyd. Han rakk bare å være med på noen få album før han ble mentalt syk. Han ga ut noen soloplater før han isolerte seg helt fra omverdenen.
Han døde i juli 2006, kun 60 år gammel, og er blitt en legende i den moderne musikkverdenen. Han påvirket Pink Floyds musikk i mange år og har på sin måte bidratt til deres enorme suksess. Bandet komponerte også “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” og “Wish you where here” til ære for Barret.
På “Best of”-plata er det en låt som heter “Bob Dylan Blues” – den hadde aldri vært utgitt før. Jeg kjøpte CD-en og satte den i CD-spillerne i bilen ved første anledning. Jeg trykket meg fram til “Bob Dylan Blues”.
Mitt første inntrykk var at låta var ironisk. Gitarkompet var en parodi på Bob Dylans gitarspill og teksten var nesten respektløs sarkastisk.
Det store spørsmålet jeg tok mål av meg å besvare i løpet av sommeren var: Likte mitt idol Syd Barret en av mine andre store musikalske helter, Bob Dylan?

Jeg har lyttet og lyttet. Når jeg legger godvilja til, hører jeg en hyllest til Dylan. Neste gang fortoner den seg som en parodi. På nettet har det foregått lange diskusjoner.
Det interessante er at “Bob Dylan Blues” er en av de aller første sangene legenden skrev. Barret skrev den etter at han og skolekamerat David Gilmour (gitarist i Pink Floyd) hadde vært på Dylan-konsert i 1963. Da var Syd Barret 16 år.
Bare Syd Barret kan lage og fremføre en slik sang om Bob Dylan uten at jeg egentlig lar meg affisere. Jeg tror faktisk Barret skrev sangen i sin opprørske tenåringsiver – samtidig som han innerst inne så opp til kunstneren Bob Dylan.

Ao falarmos sobre rock progressivo/psicodélico,  não podemos nos esquecer de citar a banda inglesa  Pink Floyd, uma das precursoras do estilo. Fundada    e liderada até 1968 pelo cantor e guitarrista Syd  Barret, a banda é assim chamada devido a admiração  de seu primeiro líder pela arte de Pink Anderson e  Floyd Council, ambos músicos de blues. O  comportamento estranho e imprevisível de Barret, atribuído ao constante uso de LSD, causou o seu afastamento da banda. Para substituí-lo, seus companheiros Roger Waters (baixo), Nick Mason (bateria) e Rick Wright (teclados) chamaram o guitarrista David Gilmour. Com essa mudança, o baixista tornou-se o líder do quarteto. Esta fase foi marcada pelo lançamento de álbuns clássicos, como The Dark Side of The Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975) e The Wall (1979).

Após tocar em estádios lotados e contribuir para a história da música com obras-primas, Roger Waters começou a se questionar sobre tudo aquilo que tinham conquistado. Na sua visão, as pessoas iam ao show para ver o mito Pink Floyd e não mais para ouvir sua música e o que ela dizia. Em 1977, no Canadá, Waters chegou a cuspir em um fã. Frustrado, ele imaginou um show em que um muro fosse construído, separando a banda da platéia, o que simbolizava que ele fazia parte de um mundo diferente daquele do qual os fãs faziam. Assim, o conceito do The Wall foi elaborado.

O disco é marcado pelas letras amargas e pela qualidade sonora marcante, cheia de ruídos e detalhes. Começa com uma introdução à atmosfera da história. In The Flesh? é uma espécie de prólogo, o início do show que contará a história de Pink, o personagem principal do disco, que constrói um muro em torno de si para se isolar da sociedade. Não diretamente, a canção, nos segundos finais, revela a morte de seu pai na 2ª Guerra Mundial com o som de um avião em queda.

O choro de um bebê, simbolizando o nascimento de Pink, nos leva para a faixa seguinte. The Thin Ice narra os primeiros anos de vida do personagem, antes de ele ser capaz de entender o que houve com o seu pai. Dá indícios, também, da super-proteção que sua mãe lhe oferece – outro tema que será abordado adiante. A canção também faz referência aos efeitos causados pela guerra não só nas pessoas que sofreram com ela, mas também nas crianças que herdam tal sofrimento.

Em seguida, a primeira parte de uma das mais conhecidas canções da banda, Another Brick In The Wall (Part I). Nela, Pink, mais velho, começa a compreender a morte de seu pai, que “voou através do oceano deixando apenas uma lembrança, uma foto no álbum de família”. Desolado com a realidade, ele começa a construir o muro. Este episódio simboliza o primeiro tijolo (Anexo 1A).

As próximas faixas tratam de um polêmico assunto: a educação, alicerce de nossa sociedade. Em The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Pink vai para uma escola gerida por professores rigorosos e muitas vezes violentos. Segundo Roger Waters, a canção é uma reflexão de sua experiência ruim na escola. “Os professores na minha escola eram incrivelmente maus e tratavam as crianças muito mal, humilhando-as, nunca as encorajando a fazer qualquer coisa. Eles só queriam mantê-las quietas e sob controle, moldá-las como queriam”, disse ele certa vez a radio BBC. Segundo a letra, o tratamento dado aos alunos pelos professores era reflexo dos problemas que estes enfrentavam em suas vidas íntimas, com suas esposas “gordas e psicopatas”. (Anexo 1B)

Coro de alunos contra o sistema de ensino, na versão fílmica de Alan Parker

A próxima é a parte conhecidíssima de Another Brick In The Wall, a segunda. É um protesto contra o rígido sistema de ensino, em geral. Para esta segunda parte, surgiu a idéia de utilizar um coro infanto-estudantil. Foram chamados os alunos da escola Islington Green, que ganhou mil libras com essa participação. Entretanto, não houve acordos sobre royalties, o que provocou certa confusão anos mais tarde. A canção chegou a ser banida na África do Sul, pois estudantes negros a adotaram como hino do seu boicote ao sistema. É bem sabido que nos anos 70, durante o apartheid, a educação de cada criança negra – que a preparava não para a universidade, mas aos trabalhos braçais – custava ao Estado apenas um décimo de cada criança branca. Na época, estava em vigor a política da “Educação Bantu” (criada em 1953), a qual impunha: o Afrikaans como a língua de educação para os negros, escolas separadas, salas de aulas superlotadas e professores com péssima formação. A letra dá voz aos estudantes que dizem não precisar de educação (no caso, aquele tipo de educação a que estavam sujeitos) e de nenhum controle de pensamento, além de pedirem para serem deixados em paz pelos professores (Anexo 1C). Enfim, é uma canção contra ao sistema que oprimia as crianças, ao invés de estimulá-las e inspirá-las. Canção que foi boicotada, também, pelo governo inglês, chefiado no fim da década de 1970 por Margaret Thatcher. Foi considerada uma verdadeira afronta à “postura hipócrita da moral e da sociopolítica da Coroa Inglesa”, diz Waters.

Mother é uma conversa entre Pink e sua mãe, na qual o ouvinte descobre mais sobre a super-proteção da mãe (“Mamãe te deixará aqui mesmo / Debaixo da asa dela”), que o ajuda a construir o muro que o protegerá do mundo, como é dito no verso “of course mother’s gonna help build the wall” (Anexo 1D).

Anunciando o adeus à infância e à proteção da mãe, Goodbye Blue Sky introduz uma nova fase da vida do personagem. Os versos “The flames are all long gone / But the pain lingers on” (“As chamas todas foram embora/ Mas a dor demora a passar”) sugerem que tudo que o feriu física, mental e emocionalmente não mais faz parte da sua vida, mas as cicatrizes causadas ainda existem e doem. Cada dor é mais um tijolo no muro.

Depois de um interlúdio, Empty Spaces – no qual Pink, já crescido e casado, enfreta problemas na relação com sua mulher devido à distância, diretamente ligada ao muro que ele constrói –, a história segue com Young Lust. Segundo Roger Waters, a canção é sobre qualquer banda jovem de rock ‘n roll na estrada. Pink tornou-se um rockstar e está sempre fora de casa devido às turnês. Longe da mulher, ele sai com suas groupies, mostrando a sua necessidade de se relacionar com o sexo oposto. No fim da canção, ele descobre que sua mulher também o trai, o que contribui para o seu declínio mental. One Of My Turns, a seguinte, refere-se ao “esfriamento” que ocorreu no seu casamento, tomado pela rotina.

A depressão vem com Don’t Leave Me Now, na qual Pink implora à sua esposa que não o deixe. A traição dela é mais um tijolo no muro, que está completo em Another Brick In The Wall (Part 3). Enraivecido, ele decide terminar a construção, pois, como percebe, isolar-se de tudo é a única saída. Ele deseja se afastar de todos, os quais “foram apenas tijolos no muro” (Anexo 1E). O primeiro disco termina com Goodbye Cruel World, em que Pink despede-se da sociedade.

A segunda parte do álbum começa com a belíssima Hey You, outra grande obra-prima. Nesta canção, o personagem percebe o erro que cometeu isolando-se da sociedade e pretende retomar o contato com o mundo além do muro, que ele não pode ouvir nem ver. Mais e mais desesperado, Pink vê que não há saída. A canção é a ponte entre seu isolamento e a adesão ao grupo fascista “The Worms” (Os Vermes). O tema será tratado adiante. Na instrumental Is There Anybody There?, Pink tenta fazer contato além do muro. A repetição dessa pergunta (“Há alguém aí fora?”) sugere que não há resposta. Em seguida, Nobody Home descreve a vida solitária do personagem atrás do seu muro imaginário. Não há ninguém para conversar. (Anexo 1F).

Famosa e adorada no período da 2ª Guerra Mundial, a cantora Vera Lynn é mencionada (ironicamente, segundo Waters) na faixa seguinte, Vera. Suas canções otimistas forneciam esperanças às tropas européias, especialmente as inglesas. E é disso que essa curta faixa trata: esperança. Mas, no caso, ela se foi.

Outra curta faixa em seguida – Bring the Back Boys Home, que, segundo Waters é sobre não deixar as pessoas irem à guerra e serem mortas – nos leva à clássica Comfortably Numb, cujo solo de guitarra é apontado como um dos mais bonitos de todos os tempos. Nela, Pink encontra-se sob os efeitos de uma droga e é examinado por um médico, com o qual conversa. O personagem apenas consegue visualizar imagens que remetem a episódios de sua infância, que são a razão para o seu refúgio nas drogas (Anexo 1G). Terminado o diagnóstico, o doutor aplica-lhe uma injeção. É uma canção sobre drogas, solidão e desesperança.

Em The Show Must Go On, Pink reflete sobre o que irá fazer após terminar de construir o muro. Ele está ciente de que uma vida isolada não é saudável. Ele decide que o “show tem que continuar” (metaforicamente, a vida). O estresse da constante construção leva às alucinações de In The Flesh. Esta canção é a primeira de algumas canções nas quais Pink, drogado, imagina ser um ditador fascista. Ele incita sua platéia a demonstrar a sua devoção a ele jogando para além do muro homossexuais e minorias. A multidão grita seu nome e a história segue com Run Like Hell. As pessoas vestem seus “melhores disfarces”, as máscaras de botão no rosto, que representam a alienação. É uma referência aos governos – com Pink fazendo o papel de governante, alguém como Hitler. A letra afirma que todo tipo de governo pode ser comparado ao nazismo, pois todo governo acaba alienando a população através da educação e propaganda. Quanto mais culto um cidadão, mais capacidade crítica ele terá para questionar seus representantes, cobrando mudanças e protestando contra as ações. Aí reaparece a essência de Another Brick In The Wall. Para o governo, é mais interessante controlar o que as pessoas aprendem para que elas sejam manipuláveis.

Martelos: referência à suástica nazista

em Waiting for The Worms, faixa que trata da luta contra o isolamento e suas causas, além de fazer referência à propaganda nazista, a qual explorava os sentimentos, o coração da massa. Hitler dizia que na propaganda tudo é permitido: mentir, inclusive. Nesta canção, há referências a martelos, que seriam o símbolo do partido, assim como a suástica era o do nazista.

Não é nada fácil lutar contra o isolamento, algo natural quando há tantas feridas na vida, como é o caso de Pink. Assim, em Stop, a faixa mais curta do álbum, Pink se cansa de fazê-lo. Aqui, ele é preso por ser um fascista e é levado a um julgamento, The Trial, que existe apenas em sua mente. Nesta canção, há um confronto com todos os problemas da sua vida (os quais foram apresentados no decorrer do álbum): o rígido sistema de ensino, professores abusivos, a super-proteção da mãe, a traição da esposa. Um novo personagem é apresentado ao ouvinte: o Juiz, que Pink chama de “verme”, assim como todas as outras pessoas da sua vida. Esses vermes comeram seu cérebro. O ponto final é a sentença dada: destruir o muro. A canção termina com os gritos de uma multidão (“Tear Down The Wall” / “Derrube o Muro”) e o som da barreira sendo destruída pela sociedade; não por Pink. (Anexo 1H).

A última do álbum, Outside The Wall, trata das pessoas que estão do outro lado do muro, que amam a pessoa que está isolada. Algumas acabam desistindo. Ou seja, se você não derrubar o seu próprio muro, aqueles que tentam lhe libertar acabarão desistindo e o deixarão sozinho. Foi o que aconteceu a Pink durante a história.

The Wall termina aí, sem indicações sobre o que aconteceu com o personagem principal (um sujeito cuja vida é um abismo de perda e isolamento) após o muro ter sido destruído. Esse álbum é uma obra de protesto contra a sociedade e tudo o que ela pode fazer com uma pessoa, levando-a ao isolamento. Para Pink, o mundo estava errado. Mas para o mundo, quem estava errado era Pink.

Nel 1978, a causa di problemi legali, la band è costretta a lasciare il Regno Unito per un anno: durante questo periodo i componenti si dedicarono ad impegni personali, e quando fu il momento di ritrovarsi le idee erano poche. Waters stava però lavorando a due progetti The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking e The Wall: il primo divenne un album solista del bassista, il secondo un altro successo discografico per i Pink Floyd.

The Wall è un’opera rock concepita fin dalla genesi come album, film e spettacolo dal vivo. L’album esce il 30 novembre 1979 e si posiziona 3º in Gran Bretagna, e 1º in America, restandovi per 15 settimane. Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2), inoltre, diventa l’unico singolo dei Floyd a raggiungere la posizione numero 1, mentre altri singoli di successo sono Comfortably Numb e Run Like Hell. L’opera, ideata da Waters, tratta i temi della solitudine e dell’assenza di comunicazione dovute alla presenza di un muro (in inglese “wall”) posto tra le persone: tale barrierà è costruita dalla società moderna, la cui critica era stata sviluppata anche nel precedente album. Alla fine però il muro cade, lasciando spazio ad un messaggio positivo e di speranza: “Soli, o a coppie/Quelli che davvero ti amano/Camminano su e giù fuori dal il muro”.

Il film, scritto da Waters e diretto dal regista Alan Parker, è intitolato Pink Floyd The Wall e viene pubblicato il 6 agosto 1982, riscuotendo un notevole successo (circa 14 milioni di dollari in Nord America). Il ruolo di Pink, il protagonista, fu affidato a Bob Geldof. Il film, che ripercorre la linea dell’album, tranne che per l’esclusione delle canzoni Hey You e The Show Must Go On e per l’aggiunta di due nuovi brani, What Shall We Do Now? (escluso dall’album originale per motivi di spazio) e When the Tigers Broke Free, affianca alle scene reali le animazioni create da Gerald Scarfe, che venivano proiettate sul muro durante gli storici concerti, che furono pochi date le enormi proporzioni dell’allestimento.

La Holland, escribe que te escribe

Como algunos ya sabreis, la cantante americana Jolie Holland tocara mañana domingo en Donostia, por el increible precio de 7 euros la entrada. Yo no sé si la razon de esa razonable cantidad es que la Holland toque sola sin banda o qué. En todo caso, razón suficiente para dedicar este numero a esta cantante americana.

Cuenta la leyenda que a las manos de Tom Waits llego la maqueta de esta ex Bee Good Tanya (grupo folk femenino) y que, emocionado con lo que habia escuchado, decidió hablar de ella a su compañía de discos (compania indie ANTI). Estos decidieron hacer caso de los consejos del maestro y sacaron el primer disco de Jolie Holland en 2003.

“Catalpa” resulto ser un interesantísimo album de songwritting folk-jazz-blues Lo-Fi (1) que ya abarcaba todos los elementos que desarrollaría mas tarde en sus siguientes trabajos .
Tom Waits aprovechó para alabar los méritos de su protegida en cada entrevista que concedía. La puerta quedaba definitivamente abierta.

El segundo disco de Jolie Holland fue esperado con ganas pero sin gran expectacion nerviosa. Los curiosos esperabámos despistados y la sorpresa fue enorme. “Escondida“, segundo album de la lady, era simplemente algo inimaginable, Billie Holliday había resucitado, Chet Baker se habia reencarnado en una joven treintanera. “Escondida” era la cumbre artistica que muchos artistas tardan 30 years en alcanzar. El songwritting de esta mujer en este álbum abarca tanto que da vértigo, del jazz al blues, del folk al country. “Escondida” despierta tantos espíritus (Holliday, Baker, Dylan, Dalton, Bessie Smith, Mississipi John Hurt, Waits…) que cualquier filiación única directa queda caduca en tres segundos de canción. Las canciones desfilan una a una y todos los fantasmas de America se nos presentan delante. No es difícil de entender que Tom Waits quisiera echarle el diente a alguna de esas piezas.

Si bien es cierto que “”Escondida” es la cumbre de la montaña de Jolie Holland, no sería justo despreciar sus siguientes trabajos. Sobre todo si su tercer disco editado en 2006 es una maravilla de paz folk-country como “Springtime Can Kill You“. Este album esta mas acompanado ritmicamente, y si las influencias folk son mas notables que en “Escondida“, y si las sonoridades jazz del anterior son menos evidentes, las referencias al blues o al gospel siguen estadando vigentes y los espiritus envocados en “Springtime” son los mismos que en “Escondida“.
Este album significa sobre todo un cambio en la relacion de Jolie Holland con sus musicos, ya que si en “Escondida” se percibia sobre todo un talento impresionante en la individualidad de esta artista, “Springtime” muestra que Holland es perfectamente capaz de apdatar su talento individual con una banda de acompanamiento.

En 2008 Holland saca su cuarto y ultimo album hasta la fecha. “The Living and the Dead” es un álbum hermano a “Springtime Can Kill You”, una especie de suite. Sin alcanzar el genio de “Escondida“, este cuarto album es cuanto menos honorable y de calidad. Siguiendo la logica de la abertura al trabajo colectivo, la Holland invita por primera vez a músicos “guest stars” como M. Ward, Jim White o al genial guitarrista Marc Ribot (guitarrista de varios discos de Tom Waits). Como su hermano “Springtime” la sonoridad es sobre todo de songwritting folk, pero quizás de un paso mas hacia el pop.

En cualquier caso, nunca he tenido el honor de ver en directo a la dama, y no puedo deciros como se comporta en directo, pero el honorable precio de 7 euros no deberia asustaros.

(1) Por cierto, Lo-Fi quiere decir “Low-Fidelity”, y es una respuesta al termino que se solia meter en los vinilos “High-Fidelity”. Resumiendo, Lo-Fi quiere decir que la música ha tenido un trabajo de produccion minima, o bien que ha sido grabado en la casa del artista por sus propios medios, sin pasar por un estudio. Los pioneros del lo-fi serian los bluesmen de los 30, pero los primeros en asumir esa denominación serian Syd Barret y quizas Alexander Skip Spencer. Después Daniel Johnston, Jad Fair, Lou Barlow y sus Sentridoh e incluso Beck en sus ratos libres dieron al Lo-Fi su sentido genérico.

Um dos fundadores e principal cabeça pensante da banda inglesa que marcou história, PINK FLOYD, Roger Keith Barrett, revolucionou o conceito de palco e som das décadas de 60 e 70.
Usuário constante de LSD, Syd queria traduzir para o som o mesmo efeito da droga sintética. Um bom exemplo do que se pode esperar de Syd Barrett é a canção que abre o primeiro álbum de Pink Floyd, The Piper at the gates of dawn, Astronomy Domine.

Shume nga zerat qe flasin ne album jane tip portieri i studios apo tekniket qe benin rregjistrimin. Ne dhomen afer ishin edhe Paul e Linda MaCarney. Gilmour kujton se si bene te njejten loje edhe me ta, por thote ” Paul ishte aq i mesuar me intervista saqe pergjigjet e tij nuk permbanin efektin surprize qe ne kerkonim, ndaj vendosem qe te mos i fusnim…”
