From: 20minutes.fr — Sorry about this Google translation, it’s quite horrible and I am trying to clean up the language right now!!

“Two hours before their concert at Paris-Bercy on Tuesday, Muse welcome us into their dressing room. Far from the rock stars of old, singer Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard have become among the best bands in the world without compromising their image or their privacy. Ten years after their first album “Showbiz”, the British trio defended their youngest version of “The Resistance” in front of bigger and bigger audiences. They are very comfortable with their success. We are meeting with a group who listen to their fans.

How is the tour so far?

Chris Wolstenholme (bassist): The tour is going well. We play in many venues of the same size but the show is constantly evolving. There are ongoing attempts to improve the lighting, the visuals. The show feeds on the energy that’s coming from the audience. When the crowd breaks out, we want to give more. We must establish the best possible show. Therefore, I completely changed my way of playing “Undisclosed Desires.” It’s been a real headache.

Matthew Bellamy (singer): We are trying to shoot for a lot. In larger venues more people can come see and us. It does not happen every day, but sometimes we go out to meet our fans. Some of them have become friends over the years, even if we do not see each other too often.

How are you adapting to larger venues?

Mr. B. : In these halls, we must give out a lot more energy. Well think of everything: lights, videos, team. It can be something very gratifying. We are not just dealing with a group but with an entire team. It’s a very collaborative process. Even the people sitting in the back of the room must have fun and get something out of this artistic experience. I like this challenge. This is more than just music.

Dominic Howard (drums): We try to separate things. There, our tour focuses on large arenas so the show has been designed accordingly. In September, though, we have played in smaller spaces. It was nice to reconnect a little with that but nothing beats a big stadium. You can put up the lights and all the production you want.

Especially what music lends itself well to the stage?

D. H. : In September, some songs like “United States of Eurasia” did not work very well in small rooms. While it works in a large arena, both titles are more epic than the softer songs. With the light, the visual experience is more complete. Probably the best arrangement to see the band.

C. W. : We love a show that’s huge and spectacular. It’s fun. This is the kind of concerts that would see us as a spectator. There is not the same energy. Over time, we realized that our venues have grown and we felt that our music works well there. After that, we do not know what will happen in the future. We are also happy to make big production on stage because there are not many bands of our generation that do that except maybe Coldplay and Radiohead. Following closely are Bon Jovi, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen. Even the pop stars are moving away from Madonna stages. It’s exciting because it’s a real challenge. It would be easier to go in a little venue to play to a thousand people [the group will be at the Stade de France June 12, 2010].

When composing, you’re already thinking about touring in the back of your mind?

Mr. B.: The size of the rooms in which we play can influence how we write songs. We did not do too much at first but now I use a lot more “us” than “I”. When playing in large venues, we realize we do not speak alone. We speak with one voice with the public.

D. H. : When we started recording “The Resistance” there was no such idea in mind but soon, when the pieces were in place, we realized that some songs will work well in large arenas. We wanted to make this as epic as possible. After that, it’s hard to know what songs you have written if we had played in small venues. But I think, yes, it certainly had an influence on us. To be appreciated by many, he must make music easily accessible. All bands who have arrived at this level have songs that can also be appreciated by a boy of 5 years a person of 90 years.

You want to be accessible, but the album also contains a symphony in three parts …

D. H. Even with the symphony, as it is a beautiful melody. That’s all that matters. You can write music that’s very complex, but unless there is a melody that people can return to, that stays in their heads, — they do not love it the same way.

C. W. : On stage, we were very careful with public reaction. We listen to what people tell us when we exit the concert. And we read very carefully what is written on the Message Board on our site. It is important to have that feedback. And our fans are very active on the Internet. They thus have a direct influence on our shows. We started playing “MK Ultra”, a song from our last album, because they demanded it. The set list has changed to make them happy. At the beginning of the tour, we were looking for all reactions.

This direct link with your fans is something important …

D. H: It is through them that we arrived at such a level. We must maintain a close relationship with our fans, whether with the treasure hunt that we hosted a July [to have access to a full preview] or through twitter. It’s really made it this year. Internet makes things easier and I think people appreciate that. As a teen, it would have been great if Kurt Cobain had answered me on Twitter. But that wasn’t possible at this time. For a long time, there was this gap between artists and audience. The first were placed on a pedestal. This is less the case today and I think it’s a good thing. We are not gods, just people who make music.

C. W: The groups are now closer to their fans, it’s true. With Twitter, you can directly exchange, having a conversation. The only step that remains behind is to give our phone numbers. Me, I like it. The way people communicate, listen to music constantly evolves. It’s exciting. hen we released our first album ten years ago, we had no website and it was not very important.

Mr. B. : It’s nice to be able to send pictures to our fans. With Internet people can see a little bit closer who we really are and the true life of a musician on tour. They realize that we are normal people.

You yourselves are fans of other bands?

C. W. : Today, I’m not a fan of other teen groups, but I loved Nirvana, Primus, the Pixies. In 13-14 years there was some substance behind training. They had all their albums, t-shirts. If we had access to this technology at the time, I think I would have been involved more thoroughly. What is good is that as an artist, you can adjust how much you want to get involved.

Your success does not make you afraid?

D. H.: If we had known 15 years ago that we would play in venues as large, we would probably reply: “No, but it will not happen. Never”. Now, would not revert back. Very soon, we started believing in our chances to get there but not to this point. We thought that was good but in retrospect I realize that’s not it. It was mostly always thought we were going to get there. We had to be ambitious. Our sound has evolved over the years. It has been influenced by things that were overlooked as the earliest piano compositions. We try to find our own sound. It takes something today, but we must continue to move forward.

C. W.: “We want simply that people appreciate our music. The foot is to go on stage and seeing the audience drop. That’s what we love. We do not want to be respected for something else. The press people, not for us. It must be said that there are, it’s partly their fault. We know where the bars will be the paparazzi. There is no major sensational statements about drugs. People know nothing about our privacy but there is not much to say. At home, I just play with my children. If we put our lives in a magazine, people find it boring. It is not in a group to one of the “Sun”.

Mr. B. : Me neither, I had absolutely no thought that we’d reach something like that. When I was a teenager, the popular band was Nirvana, who played in medium-sized venues. My wildest dream was to reach that level. It is a real surprise for me to be playing in rooms not much bigger. I was not expecting it at all. Our music is now required as the demand from the fans who want to see us. In small venues, tickets will sell in no time and then end up on eBay at excessive prices. After that the atmosphere in the concerts suffers. We needed to do bigger venue to accomodate more fans.

D. H. : It’s true that sometimes our level of success can be a little scary. But we got lucky. Everything was built gradually. I fear for the group whose first album was a march of thunder. If the second is worse, it seems that they are on a downward trend even before it has really began. They can no longer do as well as what is expected of them. It puts a big pressure on. With Muse, we always seem to be on the rise. But it’s hard to get a clear picture now. The success of the band is no longer measured by the volume of records sold. Even if we are doing quite well on that side. “The Resistance” has already done better than the last album in a market that has shrunk. Twenty years ago, we might have sold 50 million copies. But for us, success is measured by the affluence of our shows, not by record sales. As long as people continue to want to listen to us on stage, it’s perfect.

Since your debut you’ve had a special relationship with France …

D. H. France has always been a somewhat special for us. It has been appreciated since our beginning. When our first album came out, there was a small group everywhere except here. The French fans were hooked immediately. Bercy was the first big room in which we performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters a decade ago. The French public is mad. With the British, he jumps and cries more than any other in our concerts. We know when we’re here. Just look at the public reaction.

C. W. : We love coming here. Ten years ago, it worked right away in France. And a strange love story continues. We so loved the success we had in Paris which began shooting in smaller cities. This effort was rewarded today. The audience probably enjoyed it and stayed with us. We grew up together.

And now Matthew sings even in French …

C. W: We can realize that Matthew’s French is really bad. But it was something on which he insisted on doing. I found it rather funny. Dominic lives in southern France. It drags a lot here.

You mentioned the Internet earlier as it relates to music, but it also integrates new technology today …

D. H: We’ve always been fans of new technologies. Especially in the studio. We try to keep abreast of the latest software. Some bands find that a song sounds good if when they reproduce the hit that it was in the 1960s. But sometimes it sounds like shit. We will be staying at the forefront of what today’s music is and constantly exploring new sounds. The possibilities become enormous especially with the equipment today. The hardest thing is to compose good music with all that. On our last album, I feel we did well. We learned to use a lot of technologies that had not been used by us before.

Mr. B.: Beyond electronics, I think we’re all interested in the band recording different types of music. And I do not think an artist should create something completely cut off from the rest. Totally original. I like having the honesty to integrate what I like in music.

“Undisclosed Desires” on your latest album is produced as a title R’n'B …

D. H. : With “Undisclosed desires, we have tried another kind of production using samples. Now he must try to make it sound good live. Initially I tried to play it on my drum set, but it was a horror. So I got a small electronic kit and I try to keep in mind that this was composed in the studio.

More and more this seems like eccentric music …

Mr. B.: That’s part of our universe. And it always will be in part, I think. There will always be the elements of the emerging reality with us. And the issue is not to go further but to do the same thing differently. I love that our music is a mixture of small things, everyday life and fantasy. The two go well together. They cut across the human experience. I do not like the music that is grounded only in fantasy or otherwise in the most mundane daily reality. Our music is an expression of who we are as individuals, as a group and as a human beings. The songs incorporate elements of my life and also my hopes and my fears about how the world works. The concerts are an experience more rewarding and honest when you can show all these different facets of ourselves.

For those of us who read French, here is an interview that took place Tuesday, November 17th 2009:

Moi, ça me plaît.

A 13-14 ans, on était à fond derrière certaines formations.

On a surtout toujours cru qu’on allait y arriver.

C. W. : On aime venir ici. On a grandi ensemble.

On traîne beaucoup ici.

Heaven today is but a way
To a place I once called home
Heart of a child, one final sigh
As another love goes cold

Once my heart beat to the
Rhythm of the falling snow
Blackened below, the river now flows
A stream of molten virgin snow

Chorus
For the heart I’ll never have
For the child forever gone
The music flows because it longs
For the heart I once had

Living today without a way
To understand the weight of the world
Faded and torn, old and forlorn

My weak and hoping heart
For the child, for the light
For the heart I once had
I’ll believe and foresee
Everything I could ever be

For the heart I’ll never have
For the child forever gone
The music flows because it longs
For the heart I once had

Time will not heal a dead boy’s scars
Time will kill
