MHT Web Archives are complete web pages saved into one file, and is a format browsers like Internet

MHT Web Archives are complete web pages saved into one file, and is a format browsers like Internet Explorer and Opera can handle. If you like saving complete pages as MHT archives, and need to be able to open all those you saved in Windows, you will need to install Opera, or you can use unMHT plugin for Firefox to give it that functionality.

But if you find that double-clicking an .mht file opens the text editor (which would probably be the case), you’ll need to right-click it and choose to Open With > your web browser, since no mimetype exists for that file extension.

However, to make .mht a registered file-type, you can use a little program called assoGiate. You should be able to install it via Synaptic (if not, you may need more software sources), or you can go to the download page (note that the link for Ubuntu packages currently seems to be dead, but you can get the source code there, if you prefer compiling anyway; otherwise, you can get the i386/32-bit version and amd64/64-bit version here). Once installed, it will end up in Applications > System Tools > File Types Editor.

In assoGiate, use the New button to create a blank mimetype. You’ll see there are 5 tabs in the dialogue box that pops up, and you will be putting information in the first 4. Some just require you to type data in an empty field, while others will require you to click an +Add button to do so. You can copy and paste the required data (in red) from here as you go, to save you typing it.

► General:
Category: Messages
Name: web-archive
Description: MHT Web Archive

Use the Browse button [...] to select an icon of your choice for the .mht file-type.

► Related Types:
Parent types: message/rfc822

► Filenames:
Filename pattern: *.mht

► File contents:

When you click +Add, which you’ll be doing 4 times, you’ll see more than one data entry field, but all you need to worry about is the Value: one.

Value: From: <Saved by
Value: Content-Type: multipart/related;
Value: boundary=”—-=_NextPart_
Value: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD

Once your new mimetype has been created, go to the Database menu in assoGiate’s main window and choose to Export Types… so you can import it again if need be.

Now, I mentioned you can right-click an .mht file and Open With > either Opera or Firefox (if it has the unMHT plugin), but to make either the default program for double-clicking, right-click one, select Properties and go to the Open With tab. There you’ll see some programs you can choose from, with Opera likely to be there. For Firefox, click the +Add button and select ‘Firefox Web Browser‘ from the list of programs that appears. Click Add and close the dialogue box.

Since support for this type is already in Opera, all you’ll see in the address bar is the local url to the file just opened. In Firefox, unMHT handles the opening of the file, so the address will look like:

unmht:///file.5/home/yourusername/Documents/Ubuntu-MHT-Guide.mht/

If you’re wondering whether you could just make your browser open .mht files via the last method, without creating a mimetype, the answer is that you can, but creating a mimetype is much neater. Your .mht files will be listed as “MHT Web Archive“, and have a unique icon; if you had Opera or Firefox opening these files without the mimetype, and you changed the icon for .mht files, you would change the icon for all file-types opened with the specified browser. And as you would have noted, creating the mimetype is actually not that much of a hassle, especially if all the technical data has been supplied.

Check out more examples of creating mimetypes, as well as info on changing file properties and default apps for extensions if need be.

My reply at bleepingcomputer.com

One member answered my question:
Why would plugging a PC, no matter what OS is installed on it, into a modem/router change it? So no I wouldn’t worry about the Westell.

My reply:

Thanks! That’s just what I needed to know. But, obviously, I am not technically versed. So what is OBVIOUS to you may not be obvious to me.

A professor of Russian language, in the 1970s once said to me “There is no such thing as a foolish question, for IF it is a question in your mind, it is a LEGITIMATE question. There are only foolish answers.” Beginners should be encouraged to ask questions, and not ridiculed, for that is how they learn. And those who are fortunate enough to have expertise and experience should not gloat in their knowledge as if it were wisdom.

I once mentioned to an examining physician something very obscure and little know, about the anastamosis (joining) of a one vein to the left renal vein which is totally different on the right. He was astounded and asked how I could possible know that, not being a physician. I explained that all one has to do is read, and remember a fact, and the only difference between a physician and a plumber, is that plumbers still make house calls, but physicians do not.

Plus, if I had 5 routers, and 3 providers, and money flowing out my kazoo, I would just plug the cable in and see what happens. But, if something DOES go wrong, then since I only have one router and one provider, then I must spend hours on the phone with tech support, or, if that fails, spend days waiting for a technician to show up from Verizon.

Oh, by the way, I found a free beginners manual in PDF, on Ubuntu, which also mentions that IF the Ubuntu machine has an internet card, THEN connecting it to the router should give instantaneous internet access.

http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html

And, this is a bit off topic, but I spent much of last night experimenting with that Ubuntu chat program EMPATHY. When I initially clicked on Empathy, it launched a wizard asking me first if I wanted a Jabber account, and then asking me if I want to add AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.

I only added Yahoo. Later, I tired to add other things and could not see how to get back into that wizard dialogue. I googled and found other posts suggesting that there was some problem. I UNINSTALLED REMOVED and reinstalled EMPATHY, but still no wizard. THEN I discovered that F4 will bring up a window to ADD other chat programs (which is not intuitively obvious to a beginner). I was pleased to see that my Wubi Ubuntu install is stable enough to remove and reinstall Empathy without crashing things.

I am very curious to explore the limits of the Wubi install on a Windows machine. Tonight I will have that old tower, and do a pure Ubuntu desktop install, and first I will try the wrapper technique with a Belkin Wi-Fi, and later I will experiment with the cable from the Ethernet to the router. I was a bit confused as to whether I should install Ubuntu DESKTOP or Ubuntu Server, but reading up on it made me realize that I am better off with the Desktop, because that gives the most GUI, and then ADD LAMP (Apache, MySQL, PhP) with the synaptic manager, since that is all I really want anyway and I will not use the machine as an actual server to other clients.

Ubuntu is giving tons of software to install. Synaptic makes the software installation a child-play.
I can not stop myself installing new software when skimming the synaptic package manager.

I install X,Y,Z,foo,bar,etc. There is no end for my new software thirst. I install as much I can and play around the new software and introducing those software to my friends.

Atlast, My haddisk is getting filled. I use only 10% software installed for my daily life. So to clean up those rarely wanted,but huge in size, I was searching for a script to list the huge bulky software.

Got it from http://www.unnionline.com/blog/?p=111

Here it is.

dpkg-query –show –showformat=’${Package;-50}\t${Installed-Size}\n’ | sort -k 2 -n | grep -v deinstall | awk ‘{printf “%.3f MB \t %s\n”, $2/(1024), $1}’ | tail -n 10

And here is my result.

shrinivasan@shrinivasan-laptop:~$ dpkg-query –show –showformat=’${Package;-50}\t${Installed-Size}\n’ | sort -k 2 -n | grep -v deinstall | awk ‘{printf “%.3f MB \t %s\n”, $2/(1024), $1}’ | tail -n 10
34.934 MB      kde-icons-oxygen
36.891 MB      libgl1-mesa-dri
39.023 MB      evolution-common
43.797 MB      openoffice.org-common
69.871 MB      linux-headers-2.6.31-14
82.582 MB      sun-java6-bin
86.039 MB      linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic
86.574 MB      foomatic-db-gutenprint
109.215 MB      openoffice.org-core
247.348 MB      ubuntu-docs

Here is a checklist of some cool ways to make your system even more useful, from little tweaks and system tricks, to programs you shouldn’t be without. Some tips will deal with things like how to change certain default settings to more useful ones, while others will show you how to get around certain issues that may be bugging you (like how to get full support for DVDs and multimedia).

Basically, these are most of the things I would do for new systems I set up for others (and myself). So, if you’re fairly new to Ubuntu, this list could help you quickly and easily transform your vanilla installation into a seriously useful computing environment, far better than what you ever had with Windows or Mac OS.

For some, the great desktop effects of Compiz-Fusion (the OpenGL window and compositing manager form

For some, the great desktop effects of Compiz-Fusion (the OpenGL window and compositing manager formerly known as Beryl) were the reason they tried Ubuntu in the first place. Desktop effects are not enabled by default, since they might unsettle older systems, and for many users they are just an unwanted distraction. If you have them running, you’ve already figured out how to enable them (if not, go to System > Preferences > Appearance, go to the Visual Effects tab, and choose either “Normal” or “Extra“), but you may be wondering how to take control over them.

First off, install compizconfig-settings-manager, as this is what lets you customise basically every aspect of your desktop effects. Not only can you choose what animations you want for certain tasks (like minimise and close window, etc), but you can edit how they work. That means you can speed up or slow down animated effects, as well as change the settings for every animation plug-in. You can disable some parts of Compiz-Fusion that you don’t particularly care for, and enable a whole lot of other features you never even knew existed. CompizConfg Settings Manager will reside in System > Preferences.

Compiz-Fusion ships with a bunch of plugins (compiz-fusion-plugins-main), but you may need to install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra to get more awesome effects, like Burn (it seems Ubuntu now installs that package, but if it isn’t marked as installed in Synaptic, then you’ll need to install it).

You can also install compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported – “an extended collection of plugins which have received the least amount of review and are the most likely to be problematic on your system.” As you can see, this is a use at your own risk package, but if the plugins you have aren’t enough, you can always give these a try.

To get a system tray icon that gives you easy access to settings, install fusion-icon. To run Compiz Fusion Icon, go to Applications > System Tools. You’ll find this invaluable for restarting Compiz-Fusion if it has crashed, as it has a Reload Window Manager option on the menu.

For adding and changing advanced window border and titlebar themes, you will need to install emerald. You’ll find Emerald Theme Manager in System > Preferences, and the themes it uses have an .emerald extension. Many themes offer semi-transparent glass-like titlebars, animated control buttons, and shadow and glow around the window borders. They can vary wildly, with themes for basically any taste. You are bound to find a few that you find stunning, so do a web search for “emerald themes”, and download some and import them. You will see previews of them once installed, and all you have to do is click on a preview to enable that theme. And any you don’t like, you can delete. What’s more, you can actually edit installed themes, and save them as your own.

This should be all you need to get you going on the path to greater desktop effects. Have a good look around in the settings manager, and try out some of the cool features not enabled by default. And have a play around with changing some of your plug-ins, like turn the flames of Burn purple and yellow, or add heaps more wobble to Magic Lamp and make it last much longer (that actually looks really good on minimise and restore). Then find some Emerald themes to import, and if you find one you love, but don’t like the titlebar font, or want more opacity, you can edit it. You can control basically every aspect of how your windows are decorated, so if you can’t find any themes you like 100%, then make your own!

cp /etc/apt/sources.list  /home/carpeta-usuario/respaldo/

$ dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall > ubuntu-files

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
$ sudo dpkg --set-selections < ubuntu-files
$ sudo dselect install

When you look for a particular program to install via Synaptic or any other package manager, and it

When you look for a particular program to install via Synaptic or any other package manager, and it doesn’t seem to exist, it’s no use typing sudo apt-get install nameofpackage in a terminal, since all of them rely on the APT Package Management system. So when Synaptic can’t find it, it means the package is not in the standard repositories, though chances are it exists in a “universe” or “multiverse” repo. What this means is rather than search for the developer’s site, and download and install their program, you might find it in Synaptic if you give it more places to look.

The first thing you should always do is enable universe (“Community-maintained Open Source software“) repos via System > Administration > Software Sources. It resides in the first tab, Ubuntu Software, as does multiverse (“Software restricted by copyright or legal issues“). Make sure both of those are enabled, and your package manager will find a lot more in searches.

The next tab, Third-Party Software, is where you can add more repos yourself. You will see an “Add CD-ROM” button at the bottom, which is useful for adding discs like the Ubuntu Alternate CD as software sources. And “+ Add” is what you use to add other sources manually. These repos can range from those that just take care of obtaining hard-to-find packages, through to ones for keeping specific programs updated, and look like this:

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian jaunty non-free

In the case of the example, the repo is to keep Virtualbox up to date, and is added automatically, but when you download programs from sites, and they advise you to add their repo to your software sources, you now know how.

Just remember that when adding repos others have recommended you may need to change the version. In the example used, the “jaunty” refers to Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope”, so replace it with your current one. For example, if you’re running 9.10 “Karmic Koala”, you would replace it with “karmic“. One thing to remember is that when the sources are being checked, if the repo you added doesn’t exist yet, it will come up with the error that it couldn’t be located; you can either wait for it to eventually be active (ie: just ignore the error), delete it from your software sources (if the error really annoys you), or edit it back to what it was. In other words, if you added deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info karmic all, but it is invalid, change it back to deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info jaunty all.

Probably the best way to get a whole lot of useful repos added at once is to add the Medibuntu repository. This will give you easy access to lots of hard-to-find software within Synaptic, not to mention “non-free” packages (copyrighted or other legal issues) which can often be seemingly impossible to get any other way. It will also make it possible to install popular apps like Skype and Google Earth without downloading from the site (and usually having to register). Medibuntu also includes even more multimedia codec packs than ubuntu-restricted-extras gives you, like proprietary non-native Win32/64 codecs. It also gives you access to libdvdcss2 for playing encrypted DVDs. For more info on this, read my post, or just go straight to the documentation page.

♣ For additional information on Ubuntu repositories, check out the official help page.

But just so you know, Ubuntu is totally free to download – I sell it at for a nominal fee so those with slow dial-up or small download limits on broadband can get it quickly and easily. Also, some are cursed with downloads getting corrupted somewhere down the line, while others simply can’t turn the ISO image they’ve downloaded to a bootable disc.

Besides the bonus disc of themes and goodies for Ubuntu that I offer, many are simply enticed by my rather large but very informative ad that presents them with lots of screenshots of this great OS in action. I’ve had many who were scared to try any Linux distro, and quite a few who hadn’t even heard of Linux, sold on the idea simply because of that ad.

While it’s great knowing I am helping spread the word, the real bonus comes in the form of feedback, from which I can easily see that the hundreds of people I have helped convert are totally stoked with Ubuntu. I also get emails from customers who tell me they no longer dual boot – everything they could ever want is in Ubuntu, so they wiped their Windows partition.

Check out my Ubuntu ad to see how easy it is to use, how it comes with heaps of useful software – like even a full office suite – and how you can customise it to be your OS in ways you can only dream of in Windows and Mac OS. When you’re ready to give it a try, go to the Ubuntu site and download it. The “i386” version will work on basically all Wintel machines (ie: Windows PCs) and Intel-based Macs (with a “PowerPC” version for older Macs), but if you have a Dual or Quad core, you should consider getting the most out of your hardware by using the 64-bit version (“amd64“).

Just remember you don’t need to install it to try it – simply reboot your computer with the “Live CD” and you will end up at a fully-functional “live” desktop running straight off the disc, with just your RAM being used, and nothing being cached to your hard drive (ie: it won’t touch your Windows or Mac OS in any way!).

When you decide to install, it will give you the option of taking some of your Windows or Mac OS partition, choosing another drive attached, or taking the whole drive (if you wish to get rid of the disaster of an OS you were previously running). So why not download the Live CD and give it a test run? You never know: you could end shaking your head in disbelief that you didn’t do it earlier. I now know of hundreds of people who never dreamed they’d be getting rid of Windows altogether, so funnier things have happened!
