There are many ways to turn a traditional blog into a money making opportunity. The simplest and most common money makers for bloggers are advertising and syndication. But it’s not necessarily as simple as cut and paste. There are many different forms of each and it is important not only to review your options as they come, it is also important to understand the fundamentals behind your blog and your readership.

Advertising

Advertising on blogs is the simplest and usually the first step anyone can and should make when turning a blog into an income generator. When doing this it is important to keep in mind that your blog is all about the content, not the advertisements. You can’t turn your entire blog into an advertisement. You will alienate your readership and kill any hope of gaining revenue from that blog. There are several options to consider when thinking about blog advertising. The first is to determine what type of advertising you want to share. Do you want to advertise your own products? Do you want to share information and ads from affiliate programs you belong to? Do you want to sell ad space on your blog? Once you know what type of ads you will be posting, consider where on your blog you will post them.

Posting an Ad on your blog can be done in one of two ways. The first is to create a separate page for advertisements and update this page frequently. With this option anyone who views your blog through an RSS reader will not see the ads you post. Ads on a page are only seen when someone physically visits your blog. The second option is to post an ad the same way you would post a message on your blog. With this option you are certain that the ad goes out to anyone who views your blog. The downside is that the more often you post the lower in the posting history that ad appears. It is possible to both post an ad on a page and post a that same ad on an Advertisement page on the same blog. Doing this ensures everyone can see the ad and you can potentially earn more from that ad, but it will take twice as long to perform.

Before you go through the process of signing up for affiliate programs or soliciting for ads, be sure to read the rules and bylaws of your blogging platform. Some platforms, such as WordPress, restrict the type of ads you can place within your blog as well as the types of outside code they will support.

Syndication

Syndication for a blog occurs when an outside entity pays you, the owner, for the content within your blog. This is usually for both current and future content. How much you are paid and the length of the contract varies from contract to contract. Though you can solicit such contracts, in general those who are seeking the type of articles/posts your blog contains will find you when they are ready to begin contract negotiations.

Syndication takes time. Those who buy blog content (and in effect the blogger) look for consistency, style, and content type when choosing whom to contract with. The longer you blog and the more consistent you are with your blogging the more likely it is that your blog will be syndicated.

The advantage of RSS is that it allows you to stay informed regularly by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. RSS readers/users need to subscribe to keep getting updated news and articles about an specific subject.
You can add a RSS feed in your wordpress blog. The way I put a RSS feed on my blog was by first looking for a topic of my interest in the education week website. Once I found it, I clicked on the orange RSS image. Then I copied the URL and on my dashsboard under appearance I added a RSS widget. As I did so I had the option to choose whether I wanted the RSS feed to display a brief description of the article, author and date. Again these are choices and is up to you if you want to show all of that information.

I can only hope that you guys love NBC’s The Office as much as I do. The show features incredible acting, writing, and cinematography, and it hardly ever fails to entertain. The misadventures of Michael Scott’s modern office also shows us the power television can still wield. Shows like The Office–shows that refuse to follow the conventional forms and storylines of television programs–can build massive, passionate cult followings. It’s why The NBC Store can charge $25 for Office-themed shirts. In contrast, I’d place the odds of seeing someone in a Two and A Half Men shirt at about 35,072 : 1.

But case in point: TBS, which holds the national syndication to The Office, just aired the Season 5 episode “Business Ethics,” in which Michael Scott (Steve Carell) claims to have watched “Cookie Monster singing Chocolate Rain” thousands of times. That was about an hour ago. Since then, the aforementioned video has several hundred more views and twenty new comments, all referencing the episode. And this happened in syndication, on cable. Impressive.

The Selling Of Homes To The Expanding Online Marketplace Has Real Estate Firms Turning To Syndicatio

The Selling Of Homes To The Expanding Online Marketplace Has Real Estate Firms Turning To Syndication Companies To Get Properties Seen By The Most Shoppers

Selling homes today is a lot like the business of taking a top rated Network TV show into syndication. For instance… when the ‘mega hit show’ Friends finished its long run on the NBC network… a ‘syndicator’ stepped in to take the show to new heights and profits through syndication. The more TV stations and markets – the more visibility and advertising revenue it can generate – over and over again. Real estate today is a lot like a hot network TV show in reruns.

“It’s all about getting the most exposure online for the real estate listings – thus reaching as big an audience/potential buyers as possible,” said Gurtej Sodhi, Chief Information Officer and Corporate Executive Vice President for Crye-Leike, REALTORS. “It’s about distributing our listings and also putting systems in place to protect the integrity of the data, content and detail of a property listing that’s being presented online.”

Sodhi – on behalf of Crye-Leike, REALTORS recently negotiated a strategic agreement with one of the two biggest real estate listing syndicators in the country – a company called ListHub. Think of ListHub to real estate listing syndication like a Wal Mart is to retailing. According to Sodhi the partnership will put the company’s real estate listings on more than 30 ‘Internet Portals’ which generate over 95% of all real estate based internet traffic.

“Back in the day… real estate companies maintained their ‘homes for sale’ on their own company web site – and that was good enough just a few years ago,” said Sodhi. “Today, with the explosion of commerce on the internet and fierce competition – you have to be everywhere you think a home buyer will be online looking for homes and have a mechanism to direct and connect them back to your company and agents.”

A few of the sites where you can now find Crye-Leike homes include: Google, AOL, Yahoo, FrontDoor.com and Trulia just to name a few. The company will also receive ‘traffic reports’ so agents and managers can see where property listings are getting the most looks and interest from prospective home shoppers.

“We have tried to stay on the cutting edge of technology – evolving our business model to cater to the online home shopper as well as our Realtors,” said Harold Crye, Cofounder & CEO of Crye-Leike, REALTORS. “Our relationship with ListHub will help us open the door and connect more with our clients who are increasingly starting their home search online and prefer to connect with our agents and managers through email and online social communities.”

Crye-Leike, REALTORS will continue to maintain its very visible branch office locations across the MidSouth and employ a variety of traditional sales and marketing techniques to reach potential customers. Clearly – the expanding online marketplace of buyers dictates a new approach – going to where the clients and the business are.

“The TV networks and production companies in Hollywood realized some years ago that they could get more mileage and money out of hit shows if it went into syndication – duplicating a show over and over and over,” said Sodhi. “We’d like to think of all our homes for sale as ‘Must See Real Estate’ and the time has come in our marketplace to seize on syndication in online communities to attract more people to our top rated properties.”

About ListHub
ListHub is the nation’s premier network for listing asset management.

While many video publishers seek the widest possible distribution of their videos through an embeddable player and Media RSS, some, like HealthiNation and Virgin Media, are using a syndicated player which is placed on specific sites.

Controlling the “off domain” strategy is important for many publishers: Some are cautioned about where their videos will appear, often reflecting the concern of advertisers. For others there are rights issues with their content.

So what is the difference to Embeddable players?

With a traditional embeddable player, people really think about viral syndication where a consumer sort of takes the video and embeds it maybe in their personal blog or MySpace page or something to that effect. What we’ve found is a really effective strategy for content owners is for them to build sort of trusted relationships with distributers–be it very large portals like AOL Video or niche websites that have a really valuable audience. For them to build that relationship with them and to package specific content that they deliver, you know, through a platform like Brightcove, directly through those websites. That really becomes a safe environment for them to build audience off of their own web properties.

Ok, for the last several years, you have been hearing about real estate being marketed via social me

Ok, for the last several years, you have been hearing about real estate being marketed via social media, blogging, video web portals, and syndication. You know it exists, you know people are doing it, but you’re unsure whether or not it produces results.

The answer is yes, it can produce results, but are there some rules for doing it right and doing it well?

1. Blogging – this is writing about a home, area, neighborhood, or agent services. Three simples rules for blogging with effectiveness:
a. You must do it at least three times a week, anything less will not produce results so don’t bother.
b. Its best if it is an original content not copied or linked from another site.
c. You must set up an effective network of places to post your information like other blogs, RSS feeds, and real estate web portals.

2. Social media – yes, you should talk about homes for sale on social networking sites. If you had a home for sale, you would tell all your friends about it. That’s called word of mouth. Putting this same information all over social networking sites is no different; it’s spreading the news to many more people much more quickly. Three simple rules here:
a. Be careful not to post the same information too much every week. Telling your friends three times a week you that need to sell your home will get you knocked off their friends list.
b. Make sure that you include a link back to a website where people can get more information.
c. Again, make sure that you have set up a network and are utilizing as many social sites as possible.

3. Syndication – this is a process of taking listing information and placing it all over internet real estate related websites. Two simple rules here:
a. Make sure that you know where that information is being placed.
b. Make sure that you check it often to ensure that it’s being displayed correctly.

Finally, it is imperative that if you decide to market on the internet, you stay married to the process. Trying this stuff for a month and hoping for results won’t work. You must be faithful to all of these practices day in and day out for at least a year to two years to see results.

I am participating on a team that’s looking at candidate software for the UW enterprise portal

I am participating on a team that’s looking at candidate software for the UW enterprise portal. The software that MyUW runs on was written in-house here, back before the term “portal” was even used in this context, and it makes little sense to pretend it is cost-effective for us to continue to develop our own code when there are other platforms that are widely used and supported, like Liferay and uPortal. There are also new needs for a web platform that allows easy integration of related applications, most pressingly in the area of research administration.

That being said, I keep wondering whether the concept of an enterprise web portal even makes sense anymore. We are at the beginning of a time where, instead of turning to monolithic portal sites that centralize information access and interaction, people increasingly consume information and applications in smaller bite-size pieces, distributed across multiple locations and devices. Individual gadgets show up now in Windows and Google, while Apple calls them Dashboard Widgets. These small “mini-applications” are characterized as being quick to develop and easy to deploy, making for low barriers to entry for information providers and consumers alike. Perhaps the best current examples of this trend are iPhone apps, which have grown to encompass apps for access to enterprise information as well as games and consumer interests. One notable trend is the bundling of specific pieces of content, like ebooks, as individual iPhone apps. People are selecting a variety of methods of interacting with different pieces of information, such as text messages on mobile phones, rss messages flowing into readers, and text-to-voice phone calls, in addition to traditional methods such as email or desktop web interfaces.

I can imagine a world where, for example, a UW grad student chooses to run the Course Registration App on her iPhone, gets SMS text message notifications of Husky volleyball and womens’ basketball scores, gets messages from her faculty through Facebook, receives notifications of grant opportunities on Twitter, and has access to her research data and apps for interacting with it via a web browser on her full-featured laptop.

It is at least conceivable, if not a foregone conclusion, that the future of enterprise portals lies more in the direction of a distribution hub instead of a single site where people interact with all of their information and applications. I think of this as being analogous to a take out counter as opposed to a full-service restaurant. Perhaps we should think of the Amazon or the iTunes App Store as the models for the portal of the future, where we can find the app or piece of content we need, see what the authors (or distributors) as well as other consumers have to say about it, and choose to download the appropriate version for the platform of choice.

Has anybody else been thinking along these lines?
