Mark is pulling away in the blogging stakes but this time getting nostalgic about his vinyl… and especially Madonna…

As I pulled on my black leather gloves this morning, feeling a little more than is healthy like Patrick Bateman, I was transported back to last night and my joy at discovering my 7” copy of “get into the groove” by Madonna, now I didn’t know whether I actually owned this record, I knew I had a couple but I really wanted to hear the song and so had hopefully wandered over to the bookcase which serves as home to my singles to skim through on the off chance that I owned it. I found Madonna nestled between Madness and Magazine, not the most obvious place for the queen of pop and quickly scanned through her singles and to my joy I found it smiling out at me, a little scratched for sure, but there. No sooner was it in my hand than revolving around my turntable.

The crackles burbled expectantly before that synth burst through for a piece of slinky 80s nostalgia, the whole room was transformed and I was taken back to my bedroom when I was ten with robots on the wall, lego on the wall and a Madonna poster benevolently keeping watch, bliss.

It is a bit of a strange thing for an avowed indie kid such as myself to have a soft spot for Madonna but it started when I was a wee lad, and I stand by the fact that some of her stuff is good and the aforementioned song is in my humble her finest, the Sonic Youth cover isn’t bad either. The whole Madonna quest was started by watching Desperately seeking Susan, who was found so don’t worry.

But really, is there anything better than finding a record you don’t know you have and dancing around your living room to some 80s pop, probably yes but I am a very sad man.

Junior Boys – Begone Dull Care (Domino, 2009)

‘Hazel’

When is an electro record not an electro record? Probably, listeners of Junior Boys’ Begone Dull Care might answer, when its idiosyncratic brand of nonchalant ennui provokes, not the floor-filling ‘2003′ vibe elicited by some of it’s more rambunctious cousins, but a soporific, hypnotic foot-tapping.

Indeed, the retro haze achieved by Canadian duo Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus on their third album seems like it was only realised via the discovery of some ancient synthesizers — such is the feeling of scrap-book polaroids and disco-chic cool achieved here.

The song writing is less articulate than on their previous two records, yet there is much on offer to please fans of indie-styled electro. The album is named after Norman McLaren’s 1950 pulsating, abstract animation and, while this explains the superb minimalism of Begone Dull Care, 1980s sexual groove is still its overture. “Work it baby, work it,” hushes Greenspan on the seductive Work.

Hazel, the standout, potential radio-botherer, is the only moment where Greenspan’s vocals raise to anything above a hushed aside. Elsewhere, The Animator conveys a similar marriage of laid-back disco and breezy, detuned, electronic pop which can only be described as Boards of Canada playing electro in a 1980s cocaine’n'cocktails bar.

The arpeggiated bass-lines, basic synth bleeps, and languor-inducing vocals are enough to keep heads nodding as much as anything served up by the ubiquitous Postal Service or the aberration that are MGMT. Although this is a few steps ahead in a watered-down genre, its lackadaisical approach may see it lose out to more obnoxious pretenders when vying for the attention of the dance-floor.

iPod shuffle winner when:
Trying to pull off a detached, 1985 vibe and looking for something to accompany your white chinos, big watch, and blasé, far-off gaze.

iPod shuffle sinner when:
Your house party’s music is being taken care of by DJ iPod and, after an assault on the senses (and on good taste) by Pendulum or some such, Parallel Lines drops and leaves everyone who isn’t a French android feeling mildly flat.

Hell, why not? I kinda dig this, but at the same time I feel like its what Europeans listen to while they are shopping. I mean its repetitive but that’s Benassi for ya. It’s a good song to have a little jam session to, so throw it on a play-list and enjoy.

This is a short alert type ringtone that’s basically a synth sweep. A sweep is a note on a synth that is held and it travels through any of a variety of modulations…for example: it could be a volume swell or a frequency span or even a note change. I think this ringtone would be good for text or maybe an alarm to wake me up.

Die Form – Little Boy

Please tell me this doesn’t scare the freaking shit out of you. David Lynch just got thrown into a psychotic BDSM universe where people laugh like maniacs and devour your body parts while playing yoga synthesizers. Fuck.

Get ready for exposure, because this post will be massive. French Die Form formed in the late 70’s as a duo, playing cold, dark and dekadent electro-industrial music, sometimes called “darkwave”. Simply mesmerizing. The name of the project plays on the german “die Form” (the form), the english deform, and the french “difforme” (without form). Especially their early stuff sounds so insane and good, so I will keep it at that. Two more tracks from 1987 album Poupée Mécanique (of which the theme seems to be murder):

So how does Die Form usually sound like? The music constantly surprises. They throw all kinds of sounds into the jam: the usual industrial fascination with metal and tools, or even a groovy slap-bass (dwarfing contemporary french electro acts like Justice), or the weird intermezzo of a girl laughing with insanity, or instrumental re-runs of previous tracks (like the main leitmotif of a musical coming back to haunt you). Ever wondered how the soundtrack to a BDSM sex scene would sound like? I guess something like this:

The project seems like a labyrinth of strangeness and obscurity when first entering, and you listen through their huge discography with a feeling that every song or album contain so many hidden things, that you cannot (better not?) understand it all. For example, a reviewer said this about their album ExHuman: “Die Form send back out hybrid corpse mechanism era respiration-byte with the abolition world code-maniacs brain universe of a drug fetus”. What the fuck does he mean??? Even their fans seems to have some secret society where everybody speaks in impenetrable code.

Adding to the complexity of this project, they decided to record a whole album of …Bach. Yes, Johann Sebastian Bach, the 18th century German baroque composer. And of course in a cold, industrialized and synthetic interpretation of Bach’s classic works. Like this one.

Die Form practice “multimedia intervention” by the way, combining sounds with performances, clubbing atmosphere, photography, visual art and cinema/video. I guess you by now realize the erotic theme going through the music. So here’s Die Form when they perform.

Idag fick jag ett meddelande på Facebook från mitt favoritband där de länkade till sin senaste video. Jag klickade på länken och kom till Depeche Modes webbsida och deras kommande singel Fragile Tension. Jag lyssnade och tittade på videon och den var riktigt bra. Här nedanför kommer den.

Efter att jag tittat och lyssnat på Fragile Tension surfade jag in på Depeche Modes “On tour” sida och skrollade neråt för att kolla om och vilket förband de kommer ha när de spelar i Sverige. Gissa om jag blev superglad? Det visar sig som så att det bandet som jag tycker bäst om efter Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb ska spela som förband. Vilken superkväll kusin Zeke och jag kommer få på Scandinavium i Göteborg den 26:e januari 2010. Detta kommer bli ännu ett datum som jag aldrig kommer att glömma.

Sedan klockan 18 till nu 21:50 har min underbara syster fru Valröss varit här och gjort 3 stycken smörgåstårtor till i morgon. Det ska bli smaskens att hugga in på dem. Jag har även lagt in en av mina tre lådor öl på kylning. Det vattnas allt i munnen. Det blir allt till att gå upp tidigt i morgon då jag har en hel del att göra. Jag gick nämligen inte iväg och handlade det som jag skulle gjort idag, så det får bli i morgon förmiddag. Det kan bli stressigt, men det kommer gå bra hoppas jag.

Resten av kvällen blir lugn. Lite mat och tv-tittande.

The initial meeting between Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells sounds almost like a scene out of a movie: He was working at a Brooklyn restaurant during the summer; she, a fifth grade public school teacher, was one of his customers and by chance they started talking about music. A mere week later they were recording together and thus, Sleigh Bells were formed.

So the duo’s fun synth rave-ups become way blurrier and more intense than you’d expect, while Krauss grounds everything with cool sass. It’s quite a package.

Sleigh Bells – Crown On The Ground

Here is the first soundtrash that I decided to post. I spent my time to define a style and my references and this composition is for me enought revelant for my intention. It also contains different pieces of previous work which I considered coherant with this project. Basically its a 6 minutes loop-based composition, I needed to make a montage to post it because I do not have all my devices in London to handle it and record it live. I worked with 16 loops and 3 tracks used for transitions. Many of them got basic effects like reverb, flanger, bit crunching, echo, and I also often use kind of a slicer effect on pre-processed loops and in the live handling. The montage is a draft, I did not want to spend too much time on it because the final outcome will be performed. I try to stay simple in the composition and the complexity is in the loops. Using kind of a surgical processing of sound I try to make a loop act between each other

I had the need of breaking down this one to explain it and showing that those loops are, in a way, interdependant even if they can be combine differently. Basically there are 3 categories of loops, drums, glitches & percussion (basically different from drum, because those are recorded concrete sounds and processed sound waves ), synth loops (which plays melodies) and samples (take from some of my previous work)

Lady Gaga’s much-anticipated  release  of The Fame Monster is finally here! If you haven’t already downloaded it via torrent or iTunes yet I insist you do. This new medley of 8 tracks has a variety of different styles and has nothing to do with fame, paparazzi, or anything of that sort from The Fame. Gaga says that these songs are about the monsters in her life.  Everyone got a taste of this new release with her first single, “Bad Romance.” Bad Romance is all about wanting someone so bad you’ll take them for their ugly, disease, etc. Mix in a little sexual trafficking, weird monster costumes, and battling personal demons, and in the end she triumphs. “Teeth” another track from the album sounds very different from the other tracks on the album, which are more dance/ club sounding.  I could almost imagine this song in some kind of weird psycho disco-tech jazz Broadway production.  In this song she tells the boy, “take a bite of my bad girl meat.” She continuously chants “show me your teeth.” which I feel is suggestive of fearing the truth, which states she equates truth with sex. “Alejandro” can only be best described as a slow club version of a tella novella.  In the beginning it starts with a very latin inspired melody and her sounding like a latin actress.  In true fashion of a tella novella it sounds like she’s having complicated relationship problems and messing around with other guys but her true man is Alejandro and she just wants them to leave her alone. “Monster” is def a club song with tons of synth and great lyrics.  This song chronicles a situation where, for example, you see someone you like but there is “here say” about them when you ask your friends, and you want to believe them but you go after them anyways and get hurt. “Speechless” reminds me of a vintage Gaga, where she returns to her roots of simple piano melodies and strong lyrics.  If anything I feel this is the most honest track on the album. “Dance in the Dark” is once again another great pop song with strong synths hammering out the melody.  In the song I think Gaga is talking about self-confidence and how just a simple look can make you break down. I think that dancing in the dark where no one can see her is where she can feel most comfortable. “She looks good but her boyfriend says she’s a tramp, she’s a tramp, she’s a vamp, but she still does her dance. She’s a tramp, she’s a vamp, but she still kills the dance.” The next song “So Happy I Could Die” is def a club song and is overall just a feel good song. It’s the type of song you would want to listen to in the car on the way to the club to get you in the mood.  This is probably one of my favorite tracks on the whole album even though the underlying monster of the song is alcoholism. Lastly “Telephone,” which will probably be the next single, features Beyoncé. This song is a song that I think is going to blow up cause it’s catchy and they talk about something that some of us can relate to. When you’re out in the club and you’re sipping that bub you def don’t want you phone ringing off the hook; you just want to have a damn good time. And, that’s what the whole song is about. Only bad part is that some of Beyonce’s lines are kind of lame in the song.  My overall order of best songs off this album are as follows:

4. “Bad Romance”
5. “Telephone”

A quite good documantary about synth history in the UK w/ The Normal, Human League, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, New Order. With rare footage and videos. Take a seat, drink some tea and dress your hair. It´s nearly 90 minutes! This is Part one:

If the title wasn’t obvious enough Princess Wonderboot’s blog is going to be posting her favorite albums of 2009 periodically. I thought since she’s doing it why shouldn’t I as well!  So here goes the first album that I think should be in the list of best albums of 2009!

Metric’s album Fantasies is def different than their previous albums such as Grow Up And Blow Away and Live It Out but I think that’s what makes it special.  They had a lot more time and money to put in to this album compared to last two as well.  Fantasies is the kind of album you can just pop in and instantly start singing the lyrics to the songs. I’m also slightly biased though, since Metric is one of my favorite bands. hehe.

Rég volt, hogy mazsolázzak myspace-en, de itt volt már az ideje. A mostani posztban főleg metalcore bandáké a főszerep, de hamarosan jön egy lightosabb mazsolázó is, addig viszont tányérsapka, fémösz póló, fültágító fel, lámpabúra, karácsonyfa, nagypapi a garázsba, headbang ON. (legközelebb nem lesz inkább bevezető)

Betraying The Martyrs

Valaki azt írta róluk, hogy valami ilyesmi lehetett az Abigail Williams a kezdeti időszakában, és ez elég helytálló leírás a bandáról. A szimfonikus felütésektől sem mentes, néhol deathcore-ba áthajló metálzene, breakdown-okkal, és meglepően jó tiszta énekkel. A szövegek lényegretörőek, az “átlagos” mondanivaló mellett bibliai történetek “átgondolásait” is olvashatjuk a szövegek közt. Az EP-jük ma jelent meg, érdemes utánuk lesni.

The Requested

Szomorú hangzással megáldott demoik ellenére tűrhetőek, bár a százezer másik banda után már nem hoz senkit lázba a zene, annak ellenére, hogy van itt szinti, tiszta ének, breakdown, keresztény szellemiség (bár a szövegeik egyszerűek, és bénák), metálkór meg minden, ami minden banda alapkelléke, ha tinilányokat akarnak sírásra késztetni (meg ugye szőrös metálférfiakat is sírásra késztetnek, csak nem ugyanaz a kiváltó ok).

Fit For A King

Ahhoz képest, hogy egy gitáros van feltüntetve, két gitáros számaik vannak a myspace-en, ami nem változtat a tényen, hogy kiszámítható. Vannak jó ötleteik, mint pl. az első számukban, ahol egy kicsit “elszállnak” két perc után; még több ilyet, és van keresnivalójuk a színtéren.

Abide In Me

Jót nevettem a promofotójukon, amin egy amerikai gimnázium lúzertagozatát véltem felfedezni (…), bár a zenében nem akkora lúzerek, inkább csak fiatalok. Szórják az áldást breakdown formájában, a dobos triplázik, a többi lúzer pedig leszakítja a fejünket a helyéről. Nem ők az elsők, de sokadiknak elmegy.
