Even though perfume may evoke images of a field of wildflowers, it actually consists of a variety of synthetic chemicals that are manufactured in laboratories. Many perfume ingredients are far from natural. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) listed 20 common perfume ingredients on the EPA&#8217;s Hazardous Waste list, such as benzene, benzyl alcohol, limonene, acetone and ethanol. Many of these chemicals list headaches, nausea and other complications as side effects.</p>

<p>Up until the 20th century most perfumes were made with natural animal or plant ingredients and were a luxury to have. Perfume became more accessible with the introduction of synthetic ingredients. The first synthetic fragrance was created from coal tar. Now waste byproducts could be used to make fragrances that smelled like flowers and be sold to the masses for less money.</p>

<p>Over 4,00 chemicals are used in today&#8217;s fragrances. According to a 1991 study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 95 percent of these chemicals are derived from petroleum and some are potentially hazardous. Common ingredients found in perfumes are: acetone, ethanol, benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, limonene, methylene chloride, camphor, ethyl acetate, linalool and benzyl alcohol. Phthalates and synthetic musks are also commonly used potentially hazardous ingredients.</p>

<p>EPA Material Safety Data Sheets for the most poplar perfume ingredients list many nasty side effects from exposure. Acetone, often found in cologne, acts as a central nervous system depressant and can cause nausea, dryness of the mouth and slurred speech. Inhalation of ethanol vapors can produce symptoms similar to those of indigestion. Benzaldehyde is a narcotic and a local anesthetic. Limonene is a carcinogenic and should not be inhaled. Methylene chloride was banned by the FDA in 1988 but still may pop up in fragrances due to lack of enforcement. Another carcinogenic substance is benzyl acetate, which has been linked to pancreatic cancer. All these chemicals are found in everyday perfumes and are readily absorbed into the body with every spritz.</p>

<p>Even though personal-care products must list their ingredients, fragrances can keep their ingredients a secret because they fall into the &#8220;trade secret&#8221; category. Critics saytThe FDA is lax on regulations for the fragrance industry. The word &#8220;fragrance&#8221; may be used on any product that has a given odor, but there&#8217;s no telling what &#8220;fragrance&#8221; can stand for. It may contain one or 100 chemicals.</p>

<div>Many people experience adverse side effects when exposed to second-hand perfume. People with asthma or allergies generally don&#8217;t tolerate being around fragrances. Chemical sensitivity, also referred to as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or Environmental Illness, is a condition in which people experience headaches or breathing difficulties from exposure to fragrance. Some workplaces have banned employees from wearing perfume as a result of these conditions.</div>

<p>In a world full of leather, fur and animal prints it seems rather unusual that the fashion industry would take interest in doing something &#8220;good&#8221; for the public as well as the environment. However, lately it seems that the opposite is true. Now we can attribute &#8220;going green&#8221; as  a new wave of trends that are going to environment- conscious folks.  According to reporter Kim Dean, designers are now using non-toxic dyes and fabrics produced without the use of pesticides. &#8220;Going green is the new black&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>I had the chance to go to New Mart in downtown LA and interview a designer for &#8220;Organic Calfornia Rising,&#8221; clothing line. According to her, L.A&#8217;s market week, ( which is a week just for buyers , exhibitors and retailers ),  has changed to a green and environmental- friendly  focus in fashion.  She says &#8221; It&#8217;s a great opportunity to make people aware of the luxury and high- end line as well as do something good for the public.&#8221; As reported by the Women&#8217;s Wear Daily magazine, high- profile designers such as Jil Sander, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Narcisco Rodgriguez are all jumping on board and  signing up for Earth&#8217;s pledges Future Fashion, ( which is a charity organization geared to raise awareness for eco- minded people).</p>

<p>However I could not help and ask myself,  isn&#8217;t all of this rather expensive? I mean the cost to make a garment is rather pricy, will business&#8217;s benefit from all this? Is there a lot of sacrifice here to make a piece using eco-friendly fabrics? According to Women&#8217;s Wear Daily ( WWD) magazine, ingeo fibers ( man &#8211; made fiber/material and re- usable fibers, made from plants instead of oil ),  cost 10-15 percent more  than regular cotton. However companies such as Moral Fenar, Elisa Jimenez and Nadia Fassi explain that it is well worth it to spend that much more if it means creating something good for the environment and public. It is also not hurting their business as going green seems to be a growing and staying trend.  This is rather refreshing news and I am soon to discover that fashion designers are not just out for profit. They have the public&#8217;s interest and  well – being in mind .Some of the most well known designers like Miu Miu are using scraps from the cutting-room and saving them for handbags and garments.</p>
<p>I have learned a lot from this industry as well as what is in &#8220;vogue&#8221; sometimes isn&#8217;t what you think it may be. I also discovered that what may profit a business can sometimes be what you least expect. &#8220;Going green is the new black&#8221; really is a profound statement. Not only are fashion designers &#8220;smartening&#8221; up, but they for sure have the public&#8217;s interest in mind, which for so long has not been a priority of this business. It&#8217;s not just about wearing something extravagant off the runway, if it’s extreme and good for the environment, then its all the better.</p>

They&#8217;re using wood — red oak, rattan and sipo work best — to create an artificial bone replacement called carbonated hydroxyapatite. Because of the sponginess of the wood, live bones are expected to grow into the structure faster than with traditional titanium or ceramic implants, decreasing the time it takes to mend a broken bone. The procedure isn&#8217;t quite ready for human testing, so sheep are currently testing the artificial bones.</p>
<p>Researchers say that with the bone substitute, which takes approximately one week to process, they can create virtually any size or shape&#8221;</p>

<title><![CDATA[Synthetic Hair Transplants A Future Possibility]]></title>

The practice of artificial hair or synthetic hair transplantation to treat hair loss or androgenetic alopecia has yet to be approved by the FDA. But, in other countries, artificial hair restoration is being attempted. In addition, in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, there was a study published about artificial hair transplants, but the results are to be taken with a grain of salt as there weren’t a lot of participants. Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning.</p>
<p>The article mentioned issues in the artificial hair implant process, which included: ineffective techniques, poor quality of hair fiber, and inexperienced surgeons. But, it’s important to note, the study’s aim is to convey the idea that artificial copolyamide fiber implantation seems to be relatively safe and a possible remedy to <a title="Orange County Men Hair Loss" href="http://ushairtransplant.com/men-hair-loss.php?id=11">male pattern baldness</a> or androgenetic alopecia.</p>
<p>The scientific study consisted of 10 androgenetic alopecia adult test subjects who had tried more mainstream hair restoration techniques but to no avail; these test subjects agreed to have copolyamide fiber implanted on their scalps and were followed a minimum of three years. Initial implants included 100 fibers followed by subsequent sessions of up to 500 fibers per four to six weeks for the purpose of achieving a density of 20-40 fibers per cm2.</p>
<p>Throughout the research, during fiber implants and follow-up sessions, the researchers maintained an almost exact adherence to schedule. For the study as a whole, 10,000 fibers were implanted; for each test subject, an average of 1000 fibers. Overall (except for one person), researchers found that the implants resulted in pleasant-looking hair, didn’t have any notable side effects, and the subjects emotionally satisfied. At the entry point of most fibers, sebum deposition and temporary pitting were consistent throughout. In 30 percent of test subjects, there was a case of recurrent mild folliculitis.</p>
<p>In this study, common complications such as facial swelling, cellulitis, and severe scarring were not detected. It is important to note, each year, 15 percent to 30 percent of transplanted fibers fell away, which led to required regular maintenance. To conclude the study, factors of significant importance were the method of fiber transplant technique and consistent follow-up, leading to positive results. In the near future, <a title="Hair Restoration Surgery Orange County CA" href="http://ushairtransplant.com/">surgical hair transplants</a> might be done with artificial hair for patients who don’t have quality donor hair and also are suffering from excessive baldness. But, much more testing is required to see whether artificial hair transplant can be an option for future hair loss patients.</p>

<p>Dr. MacArthur reported that within 5 to 10 years it would be possible to create a synthetic biological agent that would disable the human immune system. Two versions would be developed, one that would leave its victims dead, and another that would chronically disable its victims.</p>

<p>Isolated cases of two strange new diseases began appearing in the U.S. and in Africa. Some of the victims died; others remained seriously ill for years.</p>

Clusters of a mysterious disease later named chronic fatigue syndrome were reported throughout North America.</p>
<p>We now know that both illnesses are characterized by marked loss of immune system integrity. One of the diseases kills its victims, while the other disables. It is interesting to note that Dr. MacArthur&#8217;s timeline of 5-10 years puts us well within the years that AIDS and CFS first made their debuts.</p></blockquote>

<p>Today’s soaring fertilizer prices prompt South America’s fruit producers to use less fertilizer and to analyze soil and plants to make production more efficient.  These farmers who pay two-three times more for fertilizers, but receive less and less money for their products are especially feeling the squeeze.  </p>
<p><a href="http://www.fruchincha.com.pe/main.asp?t=3224">Fruchincha</a>, a 3.000 hectares plantation in <a href="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&#38;source=s_q&#38;hl=en&#38;geocode=&#38;q=chincha+peru&#38;sll=53.800651,-4.064941&#38;sspn=16.157221,46.538086&#38;ie=UTF8&#38;hq=&#38;hnear=Chincha+Alta,+Peru&#38;z=14">Chincha, Peru</a> produces grape, avocado and citrus. It employs 2000 people and exports 50% of its produce to Europe, 30% to the United States, and 20% to Asia and domestic markets. </p>
<p>Its main product for exportation is grapes, and its price between 2006 and 2008 had been U.S$18 per box (8.2 kg). Two years ago, a farmer in Peru would receive approximately 61 Peruvian soles for every box sold. But because the dollar’s value is down and importers still pay the same price in foreign currency a farmer today would only get around 50 soles. </p>
<p>Furthermore, Fruchincha’s production costs increased 30% in 2008 due to high fertilizer and petroleum prices. In addition, the weak U.S. dollar is making exports less profitable for them, and this is forcing them to cut expenses by using less fertilizers.</p>
<p>Demand for fertilizers grew five percent from 2006 to 2007 and tripled by July 2008. The three biggest consumers are China and India in Asia, and Brasil in Latin America. </p>
<p>One of the reasons for the sudden jump in demand is increased crop production for biodiesel. The extra land that is used to produce crops for ethanol needs fertilizers too, that makes them scarce and expensive. </p>
<p>“There are about 1.5 million hectares of land in Chile used to produce fruit for exportation, but in Brasil the same amount of land is used solely to produce sugar canes and maize to create ethanol.” says Francisco Bello, a forestry engineer. </p>
<p>Fertilizers are combinations of nutrients that help plants to develop. The most essential elements are phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. Phosphate fertilizers are manufactured mostly in the United States, Morocco and along the Baltic Sea. According to International Fertilizer Development Center, the price of diammonium phosphate, the main phosphate fertilizer, rose from US$252 in January 2007 to US$1203 per ton by July 2008 (U.S. Gulf price).</p>
<p>Potash, the source of potassium is mined. Canada produces 40% of the world’s potash, followed by Russia and Belarus. The price of muriate of potash rose from US$172 in January 2007 to US$752 per ton by July 2008 (Vancouver price).</p>
<p>President and Chief Executive Officer of IFDC Amit H. Roy says “Prices of phosphate and potash fertilizers are rising more steeply than the price of nitrogen-based urea because production sources are more limited. Most of the world’s phosphate for fertilizer is mined and thus, a non-renewable resource.” </p>
<p>Nitrogen is 78.1% of the air and it is turned into fertilizer using the Haber-Bosch process. In the process natural gas is used to convert atmospheric nitrogen to usable forms such as ammonia and urea. The price of a ton of urea rose from US$272 in January to US$787 by July 2008 (Arab Gulf price).</p>
<p>Natural gas represents about 22% of global energy use, and demand is growing for its liquified format. As natural gas is a main ingredient in making ammonia, soaring gas prices can drive the cost of fertilizers even higher. </p>
<p> “We need to develop other methods of creating energy and fertilizers such as using wind-power, or other renewable resources, because many of the fertilizers derive from petroleum.” says Arturo Arzani Anders, production inspector of Fruchincha. </p>
<p>The increase in price has made farmers look for solutions to bring production costs down. One way to do that is to analyze the soil and plants from the farm. The farmer needs to send a mixture of the soil from the plantation, a bottle of water that is used to irrigate and a plant to a laboratory. </p>
<p>Without an analysis a grower might add nutrients to the soil that it already contains. It can cause the plant to overgrow without producing fruit. This can limit the farms output, and at the same time elevate production costs, because more fertilizers are applied than needed.</p>
<p>It is advised to do two analysis a year to be up to date and also “If there is something wrong with the plants the past analysis can be checked against the most recent one to find out what the problem is” says Rosita Espinoza, owner of Agrolab, the biggest private laboratory in Chile.</p>
<p>Additionally, due to the high price of petroleum, transportation costs have risen significantly too. It takes 42 days to transport Fruchincha’s products to Asia, 30-35 days to Europe and 15 days to the United States, so the fruits need to be capable to travel the long distances. </p>
<p>Nevertheless, soon they may not need to travel at all, because their production will become unprofitable, says Anders. “Our importers in the United States and Europe now look to buy fruit from closer markets, such as Mexico or Africa.” </p>

<title><![CDATA[Review Olie Fastron Synthetic 10W40 Untuk Motor]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[Semula berpikir hanya menggunakan olie rekomendasi pabrikan, tetapi hasil yang didapat kurang menyen]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Semula berpikir hanya menggunakan olie rekomendasi pabrikan, tetapi hasil yang didapat kurang menyenangkan (jangan dipermasalahkan ya…semua pengguna CS1 pasti tahulah J). Akhirnya mengadakan riset kecil-kecilan tentang olie buat motor CS1. Tujuannya adalah mendapatkan performa terbaik di rentang harga kurang dari 60 ribuan. Memang di beberapa forum banyak menganjurkan penggunaan olie Motul 5100 Ester(wah kantong bisa bobolnich) , tapi harganya yang mahal walaupun kualitas tidak diragukan. Dirange harga tersebut ada beberapa nama yang direkomendasikan oleh forum-forum komunitas seperti Shell Advance VSX, Castrol, BM1, Motul 3100 dan Enduro Racing. Tetapi jarang yang menyarankan menggunakan Fastron. Olie Fastron ini terdiri dari 3 macam yaitu : Forced Synthetic(10W40), Synthetic (10W40) dan Full Synthetic (5W30). Dan yang digunakan adalah Synthetic (10W40)</p>
<p>Sedangkan yang sudah saya gunakan adalah Federal Ultratech 20W50, Federal Supreme XX 20W50, Federal Prime Red 10W30, Motul Multipower 20W50, Motul 15W50, Motul 3100 15W50, Fastron 10W40 Synthetic dan MPX1. Kalau dibikin kategori maka akan muncul 2 kategori olie berdasarkan harga yaitu :<!--more--></p>
<p>Harga kurang dari 40Ribu yang diwakili oleh semua Olie Federal dan MPX1, sedangkan yang belum dicoba adalah Enduro &#38; Enduro Racing<br />
Harga antara 40Ribu sampai 60Ribu yang diwakili oleh Motul dan Fastron.</p>
<p>Nah pada kesempatan ini akan direview olie Fastron synthetic 10W40. Sebelum menggunakan Fastron, motor selalu pakai olie Motul dari multipower terus berganti ke Motul 3100 yang sudah mendapat lisensi JASO MA. Semua olie motul mempunyai bau yang khas. Bau tersebut tidak tercium pada saat menggunakan olie Federal. Tetapi tercium pada saat menggunakan olie Fastron. Seketika muncul dugaan wah mungkin oli ini paling tidak sekelas dengan Motul 3100 atau Multipower. Kenapa begitu ? Karena harganya dan baunya kok sejenis atau ada kemiripan.</p>
<p>Pada saat dipakai motor terasa ringan mirip karakter Federal Prime Red. Hanya saja tarikan terasa halus sehingga motor mudah dikendalikan. Setelah kilometer ke 300 tarikan terasa agak berat, tetapi tidak berlangsung lama. Sampai pada kilometer ke 1000 olie dicheck fisik masih terlihat Kuning bening. Sedangkan pada Motul 3100 dan Multipower sudah mulai terlihat agak kuning gelap walaupun tidak berpengaruh terhadap performanya. Artinya olie Fastron ini belum mengalami degradasi material.</p>
<p>Pada kilometer 1500 pun motor masih sangat nyaman digunakan seperti pada saat pertama kali dituang. Hmmmm hebat juga nih olie, kagak rugi dech kalau begini. Hanya ada perubahan suara mesin yang agak kasar sedikit. Ketika dicheck fisik, olie mulai berwarna lebih gelap, tapi mirip warna olie Motul pada saat di Kilometer 1000.</p>
<p>Di kilometer 2000 dicheck ulang fisik olie sudah kelihatan hitam kekuningan tetapi performa tetap maknyuusss walaupun suara rada kasar dikit. Estimasi olie sanggup bertahan sampai kilometer 3000. Dan pada kilometer 2600 olie Fastron diganti karena mau mencoba olie rekomendasi pabrikan yang lain yaitu MPX1. Kondisi olie hitam sempurna dan kalau dilihat dicahaya yang terang masih kelihatan lapisan kuning di lapisan teratasnya. Performa masih nyaman. Estimasi masih bisa bertahan minimal 200 kilometer lagi.</p>
<p>Pada akhirnya olie ini rekomended sekali meskipun belum sertifikasi JASO MA, perpindahan gigi sempurna, tarikan halus dan cukup responsif seperti olie 10W30, performa mantap dan yang terakhir produksi dalam negeri. Semoga banyak brother dan sister yang beralih ke Fastron bukan karena hanya cinta tanah air tapi memang performanya bisa diandalkan. Nggak percaya ? Silakan dicoba.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Week 3 of Visual Language we learned about  Point, Line,  Pattern and Texture.  We began with a recap on previous weeks including the difference between &#8216;art&#8217; and &#8216;language&#8217;, Cubism as a visual language. Then we moved onto Form, Shape &#38; Space. We then talked about Point, Line, Pattern and Texture. We learned how the human mind loves to connect up the dots in point and interpret them as shapes, connecting dots like this is called grouping/gestalt. We learned how lines can convey alot of emotions  such as angry or gentle and can show a feeling of movement or direction. We discussed pattern how a sense of flow can be achieved thru different backgrounds, branching designs, spiral designs etc. Texture is a 3 Dimensional design and contains visual as well as physical properties through which alot of emotions can be expressed.</p>
<p>We then continued working on our projects in the Visual Language Lab. I have now finished my 60 designs and admit it was tough going to get 60 designs completed within the 2 weeks timeframe. Below is a few examples, I choose the sun.</p>

<p>I’m saddened and to hear about this child’s health problems.  I am furious that it has happened. Here is the link to the story about 10 year old Hannah Powell Auslam who has already undergone one surgery and is facing another. </p>

<p> I’m going to make a layman’s (but a well researched) summary of what has happened here. Hannah lives in California, one of the most polluted parts of the world. The air, soil and water have been contaminated by years of relentless pesticide spraying.</p>
<p>Synthetic Estrogen- a known endocrine disruptor is still being pumped into the water supply and into animals which are then processed into food and milk and personal care products like soap and shampoo.</p>
<p>Early puberty is a MAJOR problem in the United States because of the estrogen poisoning that is being done. Physiological gender confusion is another growing problem for the same reason.</p>
<p>My thought is that because of the overdose of estrogen and other agents, compounds, contaminates etc. rushed this young girl into early puberty. This created massive cellular activity which then brought on this cancer. We are going to see more and more of these cases. I’m hearing from a well-respected pediatrician in NYC that she is seeing children as young as <strong>2 </strong>with pubic hair and breast development.</p>
<p> I read several quotes from doctors who say they are “shocked” that this could happen. They need to get their head out of their textbooks and think for a moment. Medical school is over, think big picture.</p>
<p>President Obama has said one of his goals is the eradication of cancer. Here’s his chance to prove he not just media hype. If he really has the courage to do something about this-he needs to call in the CEO’s of Big Food, Big Pharma and Big Chemical and lay down the law and tell them that the poisoning of America must stop now.</p>
<p> I doubt this will happen and the poisonings will continue.</p>

<p>The DaVinci products resist curling, cracking, mold, fading, algae, insects and fungus.  Because DaVinci tiles resist water it allows the tiles to be installed in all weather conditions.  Also their shake and slate synthetic tiles resist fire, high wind and high impact. DaVinci Roofscapes slate and shake synthetic roof tiles are contributing to the <a href="http://www.davinciroofscapes.com/pdfs/DaVinci%20Roofscapes%20LEED%20Contribution.pdf">LEED certification </a>process (LEED-NC Standard 2.2).  They are aiding us in our continued effort to gain our LEED certification for our Green Life Smart Life home.</p>

<p>The DaVinci roofs are easy to install and require no special tools or instructions.  They are embedded with state of the art UV stabilizers.  The product was developed with contractors in mind, they are packaged by size and color making them easier to use.  They are also made in 5 different shapes and sizes allowing for a more authentic look and easier installation.</p>
