Ah, videogame weapons, the heart and soul of any good game. Ranging from the brilliant (Red Faction Guerilla’s Sledgehammer), to the obscene (Destroy All Human’s Anal Probe), they can make any game a blast. Here’s mu nominations fo my all time top three videogame weapons.

Number 3: The Taser (Syphon Filter 2)

The Syphon Filter series is a brilliant set of games, with a decent plot and some cracking action, but its true crowning glory is secret agent Gabe Logan’s personal weapon- the Taser.

Not a traditional police Taser, this version can shoot its wires obscenely long distances, latching on to enemies and electrocuting them even if Gabe’s on the ground and the enemies are on top of a high rise building. And it doesn’t stop there- hold the button down long enough and your unlucky enemy will literally burst into flames, before falling to a grizzly death. In sheer deadly form, the Taser has no equal.

Here’s a little montage of Gabe hard at work:

Number 2: Alex Mercer (Prototype)

Being a genetically enhanced superweapon, Alex Mercer, of the incredibly bloody game Prototype, can technically qualify for this list – after all, his entire body is a weapon.

Be it claws, a massive blade, chitinous armour, huge hammers, a whip or the ability to fly, Alex has the power to take on any occasion, and if things get a little too hot to handle he can always run up a building, jump over skyscrapers or grab the nearest person, punch their head off and transform into their form- the guy’s a brutal killer who is literally walking death, and more than deserving of the runner’s up spot on my top three list.

Witness the awesome power of the Prototype (not for the squeamish…)

Number 1: The Force (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed)

I’m a Star Wars fan. There, I admitted it. So, imagine my joy when I heard of The Force Unleashed- the tragic tale of Darth Vader’s Apprentice. Then imagine that this man was one of the most powerful Force-users ever to walk the universe. A man so powerful that even the Emperor feared him- the man is a wrecking ball in human form.

The Force is powerful in anybody’s hands, but in the hands of the Apprentice it can do just about anything _ wrench doors off their hinges, fling Stormtroopers left and right, crush massive walkers into dust and even pull a Star Destroyer out of the sky, when the Apprentice comes to call, you’d best start running.

Truly a force to be reckoned with. The Force is the best videogame weapon ever devised, and deserves the top spot in my list.

Feel the force:

Don’t agree? Tell me what your top three videogame weapons are! Leave a comment.

The Examiner reports that the ERSB have listed rating for several PSOne games set for release on the PlayStation store (for PSP and PS3). As the Examiner points out, some have already been released recently (Bloody Roar, both Tomb Raider games and Sim City) whereas a couple were previously rated quite some time ago, before disappearing only to reappear again (Blood Omen and Pandemonium!). The full list is as follows:

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Bloody Roar
Cool Boarders 2
Cool Boarders 3
International Track & Field
Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
Pandemonium!
SimCity 2000
Syphon Filter 2
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 2
Um Jammer Lammy

I wouldn’t mind picking up Blood Omen as I had it on the PC quite some time ago, and also Um Jammer Lammy as a curiosity as I’m a sucker for rhythm action games. It’s been far too long since I picked up my PSP!

Having just pre-ordered the game ‘Wet’, which stars Eliza Dushku as Rubi Malone –

Having just pre-ordered the game ‘Wet’, which stars Eliza Dushku as Rubi Malone – a female assassin – I started thinking about other strong female characters.

In honour of the harder side of the fairer sex I’ve put together twenty of the toughest female characters out there.

No superpowers, I’m talking about hand to hand, gunplay and ninja type skills.

It was supposed to be a Top 10 but the list just grew and grew. So I’ve had to do it in two parts.

Here’s part one.

And no, before we start, Lara Croft is not on this list. Every woman on this list could take her down

20) Lian Xing (Syphon Filter)

A former member of the Chinese Secret Service, Xing teamed up with Gabriel Logan in Soviet occupied Afganistan.

She is a skilled marksman, known for her sniper work. Lian Xing is always on hand to help Gabe out of trouble – whether that’s by his side or over the radio.

19) Faith Connors (Mirror’s Edge)

Faith is a parkour expert with some pretty nifty footwork. She lives in a city where the oppressive government keeps tabs on everybody – spying electronically on them. Faith delivers packages or messages by hand, the only way to safely converse.

She can handle herself with a firearm but it’s her awesome hand to hand combat skills that get her onto this list.

Check out the video below for evidence!

18) Anne Lewis (Robocop)

Ever since I first saw Robocop I’ve always thought his female partner Anne Lewis was underappreciated.

Officer Lewis is shown having a fist fight with a male suspect moments before meeting Murphy/Robocop for the first time – always a good introduction.

Her gun skills are good and she even helps Robocop reallign his targeting system with her accurate aiming.

She is willing to go to extreme lengths to assist her partner, helping him recover when he is seriously injured and then backing him up, with almost fatal consequences, in the last stand against Boddicker’s gang at the steel mill.

A real tough nut with a big heart, Anne Lewis is exactly the kind of partner you’d want if you were a cop, especially in Old Detroit

17) Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)

Lieutenant Sonya Blade is a member of the Outer World Investigation Agency, a top United States Special Forces unit.

She is also the first female entrant into the Mortal Kombat tournament. One of her moves includes doing a handstand, grabbing her enemy between her legs and smashing them into the ground.

Using her army training to her advantage Sonya is as tough as any of her male counterparts – she doesn’t even have to actually touch her opponent to finish them off… she simply blows them a deadly kiss (see below)

16) Echo (Dollhouse)

Echo is an ‘active’, someone that has signed a period of their life away in exchange for cash. During this period she has her memory wiped and is regularly imprinted with other people’s memories to carry out various jobs.

We’re talking some serious skills – safe cracking, martial arts, street fighting… the list goes on and on.

And she certainly isn’t afraid to use her skills – the Chinese kitchen/alleyway fight scene was particularly gruelling and incredibly fun to watch.

15) Tyris Flare (Golden Axe)

An Amazonian who is deadly with a sword, Tyris Flare cuts an impressive figure.

Orphaned by Death Adder, the game’s main bad guy, she is out for revenge and doesn’t care who gets hurt on the way.

As well as being adapt with a sword Tyris commands the power of fire magic – but she makes the list based on her swordplay and general toughness.

14) Rubi Malone (Wet)

I haven’t even played the full game yet but having seen the demo in action I have no hesitation in including Rubi on this list.

An acrobatic assassin skilled in dual wielding pistols and deadly with a sword, Rubi always gets the job done – despite increasing numbers of enemies

Having said that her temper may cloud her judgement at times – she often leaves a trail of dead bodies in her wake trying to get to her target, which might not be the kind of hush hush hit you’ve asked for.

13) Trinity (The Matrix)

I know Trinity kind of has superpowers but really she’s just a normal human who has learnt the ability to bend the Matrix. So she’s in the list.

I remember seeing The Matrix in the cinema and being blown away by it. That opening scene where Trinity deals with the group of cops… amazing.

With a mix of martial arts and general Matrix bending merriment Trinity takes care of the bad guys in the best possible way – hard and fast.

12) Nariko (Heavenly Sword)

Nariko’s clan were awaiting a male to fulfill the prophecy of the powerful weapon Heavenly Sword – turns out it was always gonna be a girl who got the best out of the weapon.

When all else around her seems to be falling apart it’s Nariko that steps up to the plate and takes on the bad guys.

With some serious sword combos and plenty of attitude, she is not one to be messed with, as King Bohan and his cohorts found out in Heavenly Sword.

11) Blaze Fielding (Streets Of Rage)

One of three members of a special police task force set up to deal with unrest in the city, Blaze is a Judo expert.

She uses a mixture of her martial arts, slams and throws to clean up the streets.

Hard as nails and willing to risk it all to protect the public, Blaze’s German Suplex move finished off many a bad guy in Streets Of Rage.

So there we have it the frist half of the count down with the Top 10 coming up soon!

I really enjoyed Syphon Filter back in the PSOne days so I didn’t hesitate to pick up the two

I really enjoyed Syphon Filter back in the PSOne days so I didn’t hesitate to pick up the two PSP games when they arrived.

Having played Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror on PSP last year (didn’t review it as it was in the days before this blog: nutshell – great game 8/10) I was looking forward to getting stuck into Logan’s Shadow.

After playing the first level I was distracted by Football Manager, which was followed by Resistance: Retribution. On the plus side Retribution was made by the Syphon Filter guys so coming back to Logan’s Shadow was like coming home

Obviously with Shadow being released back in 2007 and Retribution coming earlier this year they had plenty of time to improve on things.

This was almost like taking a step back as the graphics and AI suffered, particularily the enemies who most of the time just stood in the open shooting, occasionally taking cover.

That’s not to say it totally hampered my enjoyment of the game, just that it was more noticeable having playing Retribution.

I still got a kick out of chucking the thermal goggles on, lining up a shot then poking my head round the corner and taking an enemy out

And Syphon Filter is all about the gadgets, whether it’s goggle based (thermal/night vision etc) or weapon based (silencers/tasers etc) you’ll find plenty of inventive ways to take your opponents down.

My favourite was the sniper rifle with custom dart bullets. You fire once to hit them with the dart, then press fire again to activate it. So you have poisonious gas, electric taser and explosive darts – all pretty sweet really.

Boss battles were a disappointment, a problem that lingers from the first PSP game (but I’m pleased to say was vastly improved in Resistance: Retribution). Far too easy with only two of the five having any enjoyment at all.

The storyline is the usual convaluted mix of terrorists and going rogue after being taken off duty by ‘the man.’ All good though and fits in nicely with the espionage theme.

Overall this was a nicely paced, enjoyable game and a worthy follow up to the initial PSP game. I would really like to see them continue with Syphon Filter, whether it’s on PSP or even PS3, and hopefully Gabe Logan will be back on our (small) screens soon.

Rating: 8/10

I was thinking the other day about what a great set of games we as PS3 owners have coming up with th

I was thinking the other day about what a great set of games we as PS3 owners have coming up with the likes of Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed II, Modern Warfare 2, God Of War 3 etc.

And then I thought back to some of the older games I used to play and how cool it might be if some of them were re-imagined, brought into the 21st Century and onto the PS3.

So here’s the 10 franchises I’d most like to see on the PS3…

10. Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts squeezes onto the list because I feel sorry for my wife who has had to make do with Kingdom Hearts II since 2006 It’s been a while since I had to sit and watch Sora, Goofy, Donald et al jumping and hacking their way across my TV.

For such a big title, which has been a success in Japan, the US and Europe it’s surprising a next gen title hasn’t been announced, although it’s been hinted at that the upcoming PSP game will tie in with a ‘future title.’

I would imagine they’d give the graphics a lick of paint but the gameplay would stay the same and although I don’t play the games myself I do find it interesting to see which Disney characters they have included as we go through the levels.

However I expect with the PSP game yet to appear Kingdom Hearts fans may be looking at a late 2010/early 2011 release date for Kingdom Hearts III – unless those scamps at Squre Enix have been hard at work without releasing any info at all. All I’ll say is stranger things have happened!

9. The Helicopter ‘Strike’ Series

Sega Mega Drive classic ‘Desert Strike’ and the pretty good follow up ‘Jungle Strike’ (but we’ll leave it at those two I think ) were both games that lots of people will remember.

You were in control of a US army helicopter and after choosing your co-pilot got dropped in at the deep end – with a bunch of mission objectives and a host of M.I.A’s (Missing In Action) to track down.

The gameplay was really strong and while the content (a war with the Middle East) was sensitive at the time I was too young to understand all that and just wanted to blow some stuff up.

There are plenty of games that have used flying for it’s mode of transport and the recent Tom Clancy Hawx went down the simulation route but I think with a touch of ‘Mercenaries,’ a hint of ‘GTA IV’ and a splash of ‘Battlefield: Bad Company’ a new “Strike” game could be really great.

8. Manhunt

I would imagine a PS3 version of Manhunt is in the works but we haven’t had any sort of announcement from Rockstar about a next gen title in the series.

Obviously any new Manhunt won’t have the original’s twisted story to fall back on and I sincerely hope a new version wouldn’t be relying on ’shocking’ close up kills to sell the game.

Manhunt, for me, was always about the character not the kills. The fact that this guy (or in fact, you) was being forced to kill was a real mindbender. Sure the guys he was taking out were evil thugs but still…

Perhaps the newer version could give you normal people to kill (or not, depending on your choices) although I suppose that might be taking it too far.

Manhunt is certainly a series that would sell well if another game was released but they would definitely need to come up with a great, clever story to juxtaoppose the over the top violence that most people remember the games for.

7. Chase HQ

Chase HQ for me was a brilliant little game that, though limited in gameplay, never got tired – mainly due to the fact that once you caught up with the criminal you were chasing you lent out of the car window and popped one of those awesome stick on police lights on the roof

I admit they may need to up the gameplay – as it was you were given a target, had a time limit to catch them then had to run them off the road.

On the plus side they could check out the updated versions of Out Run for how to do a good job of bringing Chase HQ into the next generation of gaming.

With a graphical overhaul, some new modes and online multiplayer this could be a good little game. Plus the siren is cool anytime

6. Football Manager

As someone who loves the PSP version of Football Manager but would like a bit more depth and interaction it would brilliant to see Football Manager make the step over onto PS3.

Obviously they released one a few seasons back on XBox 360 so I guess at some stage this could become a reality although possibly their ties with Microsoft could end up keeping it a XBox 360 console exclusive.

On the flip side I fear if this actually happened I might never play anything else ever again

I’ve tried the PC version which was cool but I just can’t game on the PC – even with something point and click based like Football Manager, I just feel like I need a pad in my hand.

5. Road Rash

Road Rash was a big fixture in my gaming childhood as I spent hours racing and fighting through the wonderfully colourful terrains created for this awesome game.

The idea behind it was simple – get a bike and take part in illegal street races. The difference here being the fact that you would fight with your rival racers as you made your way through, knocking each other off your bikes.

You’d start off with a terrible bike and earn cash from races to upgrade and get better bikes. It helped that you could also grab weapons from the other racers (like clubs and chains) that were devestating to wield.

You’d obviously have to flesh out the gameplay a bit for the next gen as people expect more bang for their buck but perhaps adding some different weapons and features for the bikes, along with the option to race against other online and a graphical overhaul, might just be enough to see this brought to a new audience.

I’d certainly pick it up as an PSN game even if they just touched up the graphics and made it multi-player online. Imagine 16 or 20 racers all online – just hope I can get the chain and hang on to it

4. Speedball

Speedball has had various updates over the years as several different games companies have attempted to bring the game into 3D.

I’d love to see someone like Rockstar have a bash at this and make it a really dark, gritty game. Would be awesome to see it as a story/career based game where you have to work your way up through the leagues/teams.

Kind of like a TOCA Race Driver type of story mode, only a lot more improved and with some sinster undercurrents

Speedball was always on the dark side – a brutal undeground sport where you could seriously injure your opponents and scoring goals after racking up the points multiplier was all that mattered. Imagine the people that brought you GTA, Manhunt and Max Payne working on a PS3 version!

3. Twisted Metal

Rumours have been floating around for ages that David Jaffe’s (creator of Twisted Metal/God Of War/Calling All Cars) latest top secret project for PS3 is a new Twisted Metal.

He refuses to confirm (or deny) the rumour so this remains on the ‘ones I’d love to see’ list.

The original Twisted Metal on PSOne was a brilliant game of astute driving and absolute carnage. The weapons were well balanced and the drivers/vehicles likewise.

The amazing cast of characters also helped – everyone remembers Sweet Tooth (the psychotic clown with the Ice Cream Van) but all of them had their own back story and everyone had their personal favourites… mine were Crimson Viper and Spectre btw.

Twisted Metal Black on the PS2 continued the high standard but didn’t quite have the same impact (for me at least, the game itself was very well received) although I suspect that might’ve been because it came at a time when I wasn’t gaming all the time.

Twisted Metal will be brilliant on PS3 and I hope the fact Jaffe hasn’t denied the rumour is an indication that this could be coming in 2010.

2. Syphon Filter

Having played and loved the original Syphon Filter on PSOne and working through the PSP games as well, I’m all for a return to the big stage for Gabe Logan. With the Splinter Cell series spiking off exclusively to XBox 360, PS3 is a man down in the stealth/gadget war and Gabe could be the man to rectify the balance.

Syphon Filter has always been about the gadgets, whether it’s Thermal Googles or explosive dart ammo for your sniper rifle. And of course the trusty EDT – a brilliant device that effectively tasers your opponent. Without the need to stay within the confines of usual laws you could keep it held on until your opponent was literally smoking. Extravagant? Perhaps, but when you were out of ammo it was a god send

The comparisons to Metal Gear Solid were inevitable but really Syphon Filter plays a lot like the more action based Metal Gear Solid 4 than the original stealth classic.

I think this would be a great addition to the PS3 catalogue of games.

1. Hitman

Ah, Agent 47 – where the hell are you?!

2006 was the last time we got to use Agent 47’s skills to carry out some (and some not so) stealthy assassinations. And there is still no new word on a next gen version.

Eidos did announce Hitman 5 back in 2007 and I’m hopeful that Eidos money trouble and the take over by Square Enix won’t harm the chances of this one coming out *crosses fingers* but I would’ve thought we would have had some more info by now.

Hitman: Blood Money was the only title in the series I played but that was enough to give me a thirst for a next gen version – the way you had such choice in the assassination was outstanding.

You could make it look like an accident – rig a BBQ to explode etc or just get in and carry out an old skool hit. Alternatively you could resort to trying to blast your way in and blowing your target away but you were unlikely to succeed.

Also the fact you got the front page of a newspaper reporting on the murder as an indication of how well you performed was a stroke of genius.

I dread to think of the options and advanced AI the power of the next gen consoles could provide and I think Hitman could be a real stand out title if they nail it.

It would be a real shame if my last memories of Agent 47 were from the mediocre ‘Hitman’ film of a few years back

Kok kaya gim berantem yah hehehe ;p Dan pemenangnya menurut versi orang Cimahi (mode liat catetan : ON) adalah…

Ditambah lagi sepertinya orang Jepang menikmati proses assembly (baca : asemblai hehehe ya kan Kang Enrico ;p) syphon seperti merakit mobil atau mainan gundam hehehe. Rakit merakit memang seperti therapy (baca : terapi bukan terapai hahaha ;p) bagi sebagian orang, sebagian lagi merasa frothing milk sebagai therapy, seperti mbak Dyani, ya kan mbak? Toss, saya juga sama ;p

Moka Pot vs Industrial Espresso Machine
Biar ga kepanjangan nih tulisannya… Namun bukan berarti Moka Pot jadi pecundang lho catetan saya, nilai seduh moka pot mendekati mesin espresso industrial, hanya minus crema.

Bagaimana mesin espresso industrial vs mesin espresso rumahan? Jangan lewatkan episode berikutnya! ^^

malam

So it’s time for the second part of GregHorrorShow’s Top 100 Games. A quick recap on how

So it’s time for the second part of GregHorrorShow’s Top 100 Games.

A quick recap on how I decided who came where:

I decided, as so many games mean so many different things to me, I should come up with a fair way to judge them. This is what I came up with:

Time Spent Playing

Storyline

Difficulty

Fun

Ground Breaking?

A few provisos before we hit the next ten games…

Firstly this is my list of my Top 100 games. I certainly don’t expect you guys to agree with it (though hopefully you’ll agree with some of the choices ) and would welcome any comments.

Secondly, I’m not planning on putting the scores or totals up, just listing the games in the order they came out in.

Lastly, I never owned a Nintendo or Microsoft console so my experiences on these games were limited to friend’s houses etc – bite me

Let’s go!

90. DESTRUCTION DERBY (Playstation)

There’s something alluring about smashing cars up. Whether it’s GTA, GRID or Motorstorm it’s all about the crashes and smashes. So to create a game about Destruction Derby is what’s known as a ‘no-brainer.’ You all start on the ridge of a giant concrete bowl and when the buzzer goes you all drive into the middle and smash each other up. A great pass and play game before all this mutliplayer nonsense this was a fixture on my PSOne for ages.

89. PACMAN (Arcade)

One of the true classics. Sadly I was a bit young to get involved when it came out and by the time I was gaming we had moved on to bigger and ‘better’ things. I did play this a fair bit though and it was always really challenging. I liked seeing other people’s tactics… Go for the fruit straight away or try and save it until as late as possible?

88. ROCK BAND (Playstation 3)

Rock Band is one of those games that you’ll have specific memories of and for me, playing at the launch party with my colleagues is it. After blitzing through Don’t Fear The Reaper I switched to drums and picked Ballroom Blitz – only to fail pretty much before anyone else joined in Great fun with mates and a solid online mode to boot.

87. SYPHON FILTER (Playstation)

Gabe Logan’s first outing was an absolute stunner that rivalled Metal Gear – it just didn’t quite match up to the grand scale and storyline of the Metal Gear world. Being slightly more action based and coming loaded with gadgets Syphon Filter was a great addition to the PSOne and with Splinter Cell currently an XBox exclusive could we see Gabe coming out of retirement and heading to PS3? I hope so

86. TOMB RAIDER (Playstation)

Tomb Raider was a seminal game that helped put gaming and the Sony Playstation on the map for a lot of the general public. The game itself is a third person action/adventure title which features Lara Croft – the gaming world’s most famous ‘pin-up.’ Tomb Raider was a really enjoyable game but it never really resonated with me as a complete classic.

85. RED DEAD REVOLVER (Playstation 2)

I’ve always thought the Western was a sadly under-used genre in the gaming world since the arrival of the Playstation but with Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar did a great job of showing the genres strengths. The quick draw mode for shootouts was excellent but sadly a few bad design decisions and some gameplay annoyances meant this didn’t become the classic it could’ve been.

84. OUT RUN (ZX Spectrum)

When most people think of driving games Out Run’s red Ferrari with the blonde haired female passenger often springs to mind. Hell, I can still hum some of the tunes from the radio of the car (Magical Sound Shower anyone ) and the game delivered a sense of speed not really seen much previously. I used to spend ages on the ZX Spectrum version although the fact you had to load from the cassette whenever you chose which stretch of road at the end of a level to go for was fairly painful!

83. RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN

Resistance: Fall Of Man was probably one of the best launch titles the PS3 had. The game was impressively graphically but it was the inventiveness of the weapons – the Bullseye in particular that struck me. The Bullseye had a secondary fire mode whereby you could ‘tag’ an opponent. If you hit them with the tag you could fire you gun in any direction and the bullets would redirect straight at the target – brilliant. The storyline was cool and the gadgets you got were fun to use, generally an interesting and fun game.

82. TIME CRISIS

Time Crisis was kind of like the step up in home light gun games after Lethal Enforcers and after playing it in the arcades it was nice to see it fairly accurately recreated on the PSOne. Hours of fun blasting through the levels. Although the game was fairly short it had a massive replay value as we all tried to outdo each other in terms of score and cool kills.

81. TOEJAM AND EARL (Sega Mega Drive)

What a crazy, brilliant, messed up game this was! After crash landing their space ship, two aliens called Toejam and Earl have to find all the pieces of their ship to get back home. Much hilarity ensues, packaged within a really testing game. Randomly generated levels made it different all the time leaving Toejam and Earl firmly stuck on the planet for most folks, who didn’t have the time/patience to finish the game.

PCB Production is a digital content creation company. On their site it shows all the games that they have worked on or are working on. Both Syphon Filter 5 and Socom 4 are listed on the site. According to the site they are doing motion capture direction for Socom 4 and facial motion capture for Syphon Filter 5. I don’t know how reliable the site is though, as they seem to be make a lot of errors in their listing and I haven’t heard of them before. Personally I would like another Syphon Filter, preferably on the PS3 so Gabe Logan can make a proper comeback. Though the PSP games were good and I’ll happily take another. I’m not too bothered about Socom but it could turn out to be great so I’m not going to dismiss it.

Update: It was an error on the website so there is not Syphon Filter 5 or Socom 4. We can always hope though…

If you have read my post called Tomorrow… you will know I was supposed to have finished a PSP game and play the Resistance: Retribution demo. I was tired so I couldn’t be bothered to play a game but I did, however, play the Resistance: Retribution demo.

I have to say that I was very impressed. Control wise it is similar to the PSP Syphon Filters. The face buttons move your aim and the d pad lets you change guns, interact with the environment etc. It does come from the same people though. It plays similar to Syphon Filter but a lot faster. You can run about shooting at people but you can also take cover (It automatically lets you take cover when you stand still near an object) to avoid getting hit. The weapons are just the ones from the PS3 Resistance games so fans of the series will know which weapon is best for what etc. Overall I was really impressed. I might get it. It all depends on how much money I have at the time.

I don’t know why I’m so excited to go home for break but I am! I can’t stop making sentences with exclamation points! Look!

Nah lemme stop. Well I am gonna catch up with some people and do some hoodrat stuff. Plus I’m getting the hell outta upstate NY. So in that sense I’m not totally oblivious as to why I’m geeked to start my break.

Supposedly megabus has internet access on it so I have another option other than listening to my ipod and napping. It’s funny cause I always bring my psp on trips but I haven’t touched it in a minute. I need to beat that Syphon Filter Logan’s Shadow. That game is fire. It’s campaign is more fun that some console shooters I’ve played which says alot.

This vid makes me feel stupid for not giving my psp as much burn as it deserves. With all this said I’m prolly gonna fall asleep and not bother to play it anyway.

Platform: Sony PlayStation Genre: Action Developer: Sony Bend Publisher: SCEA Score: 9.5 I remem

Platform: Sony PlayStation

Genre: Action

Developer: Sony Bend

Publisher: SCEA

Score: 9.5

I remember when Syphon Filter 3 hit the shelves. It was released on November 7th, 2001, which was over a year after the release of the PlayStation 2. That is the reason I was skeptical about this game. I figured it was just a half assed attempt to milk the last bit of PlayStation’s quickly declining popularity. How wrong I was.

As far as PlayStation one games go, the production quality is as good as anything, and a great improvement from Syphon Filter and Syphon Filter 2. The graphics are nicer, and textures are more realistic. The FMVs look a lot nicer. The characters aren’t just pre-rendered low poly models anymore. They’re much greater in geometry, texturing, and overall quality.

The gameplay mechanics are virtually identical to that of Syphon Filter 2, but the game itself is a lot better. Why? Well, let me just tell you a little bit about Syphon Filter 2… Now, don’t get me wrong, I like a challenge as much as any gamer, but Syphon Filter 2 (and 1) is absolutely relentless. Not that this game isn’t difficult, but in Syphon Filter 2, you’d have to take on 3 waves of armies and save a building full of hostages before you get a single checkpoint. In SF3, checkpoints are a lot more generous, and usually come after every difficult part, and after every major task. Actually, some might think there are TOO many checkpoints. But honestly, in case of Syphon Filter, better too much than not enough.

The storyline takes off from where Syphon Filter 2 left off, so it might be a good idea to know the storyline. However, unlike the previous games, this one’s story flow is very different. You alternate between going on missions, and giving testimony to the Secretary of State Vince Hadden, which is told through flashback missions. Which is also a very interesting and cool way to tell how all the characters first met each other, since it’s never specified in the previous two installments. As with the previous two Syphon Filter games, the narrative is very well written, and the acting, although not amazing, is good enough to make it believable. The storyline itself is full of action, conspiracy and several interesting plot twists, which–having played the previous games–made me all giddy.

Another noteworthy aspect is the music. I find the music in this game stood out a lot more than it did in the previous games. In fact, in this game, the score is actually quite engaging and added a lot more to the experience than it did in the previous games. Not only that, but the music is interactive. What does this mean? Well, let’s say you have a basic track, which plays throughout the level. Then suddenly an enemy jumps out at you, and as you’re having this firefight, the same track gets more intense. The enemy dies, the track calms down again. Or if the enemy doesn’t jump out, the track stays calm. It basically means that the track reacts to the situation, which I actually don’t see in as many games as I’d like. So the soundtrack to this game actually stood out a whole lot.

As I’ve said at the beginning, Syphon Filter 3 came out just as the PlayStation 2 picked up momentum, and although it received generally positive reviews (and is actually my favorite in the original trilogy), flew right under the radar. When it came out, people were paying too much attention to the PS2 to notice anything that came out for the PS1 at the time. Which is unfortunate. If you were a fan of the originals and never got around to this one, or if you are interested in an engaging action spy game for the PS1, I definitely recommend it.

Side note: There is a scene in the game which involves a crate that says, “Extreme Biohazard” on it. It made me smile.

Lionhead’s headcount is down by one as Fable 2 lead designer, Richard Ham, has left the company to take on the role of creative director at Splash Damage, the UK-based developer of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Ham, who has worked on games such as The Movies and the first two Syphon Filter titles on PSone, will head up development of an as-of-yet unrevealed action game for his new employer. In a Q&A on Splash Damage’s site, Ham talks about his fondness for the original Syphon Filter, calling it his favorite project he’s worked on – and it sounds like he’s working on something similar now. Speaking about his new project, he said that “what Splash is doing is so cool, I just couldn’t turn down the offer,” adding, “In fact, there’s a lot in it that’s similar to what I wanted to do in Syphon Filter 3, back when it was going to be a PS2 launch title, but that I never got the chance to do. So I couldn’t turn down the chance to be involved.” So … Funnel Strainer?

Hey, in my Fantasy Football league, i’m 5-2 and in first place. Phew. I’m actually tied, but the guy i’m tied with i’ve beaten twice now, so I’m in the drivers seat. There’s still 6 weeks before playoffs and right now my team is limping to the finish line. Tony Romo and Reggie Bush are both out 4 weeks….. ouch. Anquan Boldin and Brian Westbrook are still trying to get better too, as is Marques Colston. Btw, these guys are on my roster. I actually acquired Boldin and Westbrook in trades after they were hurt for a couple of my bench players. You’ve always gotta look towards the future and not be so nearsighted.

Ok, so now games! Boy, were there alot of games. Let me even try to remember.

*SOLD/TRADED IN

So, i’ve barely touched Tiger Woods and Fallout 2 (I’ve played this in the past) or Secret of Mana (yes, I used to own it for the Super Nintendo) just yet. I’ve played the heck out of everything else except for the DS games, which the boys are/will be playing. Are there any that i’d recommend? Sure, probably all of them. Of all the them, I probably played Ygddra Union the most, more that 40+ hours so far (and i’ve got 47 hours on the GBA version), I think the simplicity of the battles make it easy to get into, but it’s the strategic maneuvering that’s holds you. I’ve been playing alot of Wii multiplayer games, namely Bomberman Blast, Tetris Party and Dr. Mario. My wife and I go at it in Dr. Mario almost nightly and she’s pretty darn good. That’s not to say that i’m any good, but she’s actually pretty proficient. Anyway, I’ll get back to the games and write my impressions and pass them on, I don’t recommend you stick around since i’ve ony posted 2 or 3 times in the last couple months, but it’ll be interesting. iPhone 3G & T-Mobile G1 impressions will be posted soon too. You won’t want to miss it….. well, you probably can get a better view from the 20 or so reviews, but i’ll throw my comparisons around. Til then, hasta!
