Meh, what can I say? It’s retail. But it is a job. I am learning a lot about explaining technological jargon in layman terms. And I’m brushing up on my people skills. So I can’t complain, its a good learning experience. I’m still doing the SEO consultant thing in hopes to gain enough experience to land a job with a local company. So far I’ve put 3 websites on the front pages of search engines one of which is located in Australia.

It looks like the data that was sold by a T-Mobile employee is out there! I got a call from someone asking about my T-Mobile contract and offering me a better one. It sounded like it was from India. On checking the number, 05603018128, it looks to be a virtual number used by a VOIP system. In otherwords, it is untracable. When I told them I was aware of the missing data, the caller hung up.

In the meantime, I have commented on the subject at Mobile Marketing Magazine.

I’m desperate.

And no I’m not desperate in the dating sense.  I’m desperate to get a new phone.  It will have been 21 days since I returned my Samsung Behold to T-Mobile on Thanksgiving.  I’m just as upset with T-Mobile as I am with the United States Parcel/Postal Service. 

I just don’t understand why it takes up to 30 days to return a cell phone.  I mean honestly…and I know my luck they are going to say they never received the phone and then I’ll have to file an insurance claim.  I don’t want to have to file an insurance claim.  Dang T-Mobile, and dang Post Office.

Boost Mobile, Sprint’s prepaid unit, today touted the release of its latest handset-the Motorola i410-a no-frills flip phone for anyone not in the market for an iPhone. Boost offers several other Motorola phones, including the higher-end Clutch, sporting a full Qwerty keyboard. But like other prepaid services, it doesn’t offer a true smartphone, like the new Motorola Cliq or HTC Hero sold by Sprint for contract customers.

With its $50 a month all-you-can-eat plan covering voice, text and data, Boost has among the best service plans out there. Since launched last year, the plan has proven a hit with customers. Boost has added 2.1 million customers in the first three quarters of 2009 even as Sprint continued to hemorrhage contract subscribers.

T-Mobile has just come out with a no-contract BlackBerry offering as part of its new prepaid Even More Plus plans that start at $50 a month for unlimited voice.

The move capitalizes on two of this year’s biggest trends-widening use of smartphones and the consumer shift from contract to prepaid plans as a result of the economic downturn. Further, mobile consulting firm Chetan Charma estimates that 50% to 60% of those who’ve made the switch aren’t going back to contract plans anyway.

As more people become accustomed to no-contract plans, they’re also getting used to more versatile handsets. Boost could unite what are now seen as two distinct markets-prepaid customers and smartphone users-with the launch of a prepaid smartphone. As it is, Sprint and other wireless carriers want to use the hottest devices to lure more lucrative contract subscribers.

But a prepaid smartphone wouldn’t necessarily have to be subsidized. T-Mobile is selling the BlackBerry Curve 8520 for $299, for example. Consumer pay more upfront but perhaps less over the life of what would have been a one- or two-year contract. While the more limited range of Boost’s push-to-talk (iDEN) network could make adding a smartphone more challenging, analyst Avi Greengart of Current Analysis expects prepaid smartphones won’t be an oxymoron much longer.

“There is tremendous competition at the low end of the smartphone range, and Moore’s Law ensures continued falling prices, making prepaid smartphones more palatable over time,” he said. Call it the democratization of the smartphone.

You might’ve thought that Google was positioning its industry-changing Google Maps Navigation as a value proposition for Android 2.0 and beyond, but yeah, not so much — instead, they’ve gone ahead and backported it to 1.6 (alias “Donut”) which means that T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and G1 plus other 1.6-equipped devices across the land can get in on the action. In the case of the memory-starved G1, that’s especially surprising, and a heartening sign that the world’s first retail Android device still has some fight left in it. It’s available from the Android Market now, so go ahead — try to get yourself lost. We dare you.

With the Sprint-Nextel merger reportedly off the table, Deutsche Telekom (DT), T-Mobile U.S. parent company is seeking partners to help finance its network expansion.  T-Mobile is building out its 3G network with plans to upgrade its network to HSPA+ to handle the burgeoning growth in mobile data.

The German telecom giant is reporting looking at AT&T Mobility, Clearwire, and MetroPCS as possible partners – at first blush, the obvious choice is AT&T as both have the same GSM technology and seem to be migrating to 4G along the same path.  On the flip side, both Clearwire and Metro PCS are potential partners due to significant spectrum holdings; technology issues may preclude the latter 2 as Clearwire is using WiMAX and MetroPCS CDMA which aren’t compatible with T-Mobile’s GSM/EDGE/HSPA+ network infrastructure.  The view that DT may be using Clearwire and MetroPCS spectrum to build out it’s 4G network and it’s deep pockets may just make this a reality.

All of this comes on the heels of Q3 results showing T-Mobile further losing ground to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, with their struggles more apparent with losing 77,000 subscribers in the quarter; DT isn’t known for sitting idly by while they lose market share, so expect something to transpire soon.

T-Mobile is banking on new, low-cost, unlimited plans plus new Android smartphones such as the Motorola Cliq to stem the losses; will it be enough to get them competitive with the other, much larger competitors?

With the N900 getting AWS support, there’s every reason to believe that T-Mobile USA and Nokia want to make beautiful music together — but in order to do that, they’re going to need some quality hardware in the mix. Whether the S60 5th Edition-based 5230 qualifies as “quality hardware” is strictly a matter of personal opinion, but for what it’s worth, Cell Phone Signal has raised some very good points about a recent FCC filing suggesting that the model is inbound. First off — and most importantly — the SAR report for model code RM-593 indicates that AWS 3G is supported, and overlaying the back of a 5230 with the filing’s label document lines up perfectly. A slam dunk? No, it’s not — but considering how long it’s been since T-Mobile’s sold an S60-based device, the time might be right to get back into the game.
