t2:Echo – by Henry Daniel

Due to the fact that my schedule was quite full this past weekend along with the fact that I get quite severe motion sickness from watching 3D movies, ride films and IMAX movies, I was not able to see most of the presentations that were shown at this year’s Interactive Futures conference at Emily Carr. That being said, the one performance that I was able to see in at least some form was t2:Echo by Henry Daniel.

While I was not able to see the entire performance, due to the fact that the concourse gallery walls that were blocking my seeing most of the actual dancers’ performances. On top of this, I was also helping direct the audience members to their respective locations, facilitating their viewpoints and actively going to get benches for more vertically challenged people to stand on.

By positioning the dancers in two separate yet interlinked locations, the director was able to create a bridge between the performances. This was further articulated by the video coding and processing for telepresence technology that was used to create the concurrent ghosting effect that was seen on the wall of the ECUAD concourse gallery and the main display screen in the IDS Motion Capture studio.

The ghosting effect that was projected onto the concourse gallery wall showed the dual performances and interlaid them onto one another and provided a somewhat random video playback quality as each dancer took centre stage in front of the crowd. They also entered the stage from multiple entry points and once their rotation in each location was complete, they then ran either to or from the concourse gallery and IDS MoCap studio in order to continue their respective performances there.

I have never seen a live dance performance like this before and it was quite the sight to see, as the dancers themselves were able to glide through the space with the greatest of ease and truly encompass it. From what I could see, it was a beautiful and creative bridging of technology and human performance into a multi-faceted co-locative art piece and would enjoy seeing more performances by Henry Daniel and his accompanying dance troupe.

Here’s some Tony Taka, T2, Service^^ He one of my favourite  artist of all time. His art is heaven >.< one look at it makes me wanna cry out loud and say OMG. If I ever have a chance to hire an artist, he will be first on my list. xD

Biography:

Upon graduating from art design college, he first began working on advertisement designs, but in 1998 subsequently changed careers to become a manga/anime style artist. Soon after, he began illustrating for numerous eroge and designing its characters, thus quickly gaining himself renown and popularity. Apart from his illustration work, which has since encompassed designing general games such as the recent iterations of Sega’s popular Shining roleplaying game series, he is also executive director of his own company, RPM Y.K.

Regardless, the images speak for themselves.  “Dustin Starr can’t work the cruiserweight style”… “Dustin Starr can’t do the necessary things to impress”… Whoever has been making statements like that – you better take them back! 

In image one (to the left), you’ll see me landing a standing moonsault.  That’s right, folks.  Dustin Starr, ME, standing flat-footed and hitting a perfect back flip.  I climbed in the ring… thought about it for two seconds… had a little inspiration and demonstration from T@2… and BOOM.  Nailed it.

In image two (to the right), you’ll see me finishing the standing moonault with a nip-up the likes of British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith.  Front flipping from the ground, up to my feet.

This blog is not meant to brag.  It’s not meant to be written out of spite.  It’s not even meant to be written out of retaliation to what some of you have been saying.  It’s being written to let you all know what I’ve been telling you for months and months.  I’m doing anything and everything that it takes to MAKE IT.

5:30AM running sessions?  Check!  Seven day per week workouts?  Check!  Strict eating habits?  Check!  Back flips… which I’m scared to death of?  CHECK!

If you want it bad enough, you’ll TAKE it.  That’s what I’m in the process of.

Hey there Wordsmith Laners, and welcome to another week of writing pain and gain here at Wordsmith Lane. Today I am indulging in a day off considering the forecasted Sydney weather (which didn’t turn out as hot as it was meant to be), and even though I am supposed to be doing uni work, I figure I’d get my wordsmith weekly pen going, especially considering I have been a very negligent blogger of late (more on that tomorrow — eek!). So without further ado, let’s check out what’s worth noting this week…

1. Sydney is in the midst of a supposed heatwave, which means sun, surf and sydney-summer style. I am personally not complaining, as I always look like a dag in winter and summer gives me the opportunity to rustle my fashion feathers a little bit. Today, I am wearing a floral playsuit that I bought online from topshop, silver witchery sandals that I am all-round obssessed with, and a fashion-forward fluro pink watch. The watch is my point of pride today, considering I paid a mere $20 for it, and then saw an identical one by ToyWatch in Shop Til You Drop for $345 or so. Bloody Brilliant.

2. Christmas Gift Guides have hit the glossies, and no one is more excited than I. My fave gift guides so far have been in Shop Til You Drop, madison and InStyle, and right now, I have my eye on a number of homewares more than anything else. Admittedly, half the time that I actually dog-ear pages in the gift guides of the glossies, it’s because I am lusting after something that I want, which is slightly off-putting considering I am supposed to be browsing for others. Though truth be told, I only ever gift a few people – my three siblings, my fiance, my aunt, and my God-Daughter. I used to try and gift mum and dad, but mum always returns the present and gives me a giftvoucher for the money. Apparently, I am at an age where I should be indulging my fancies instead of hers (though considering she was raised in virtual poverty for much of her life, she has never been much of a person indulged, and I’d rather be gifted with her selflessness — far more fitted to the season, me thinks).

3. Underdog writers such as ourselves might found solace in Sam Savage’s latest book, The Cry of the Sloth. Chronicling the writer’s life through the character Andrew Whittaker, who edits a small literary magazine, The Cry of the Sloth makes us little writers feel a teeny bit better for surviving on cheap wine, baked beans and maggi noodles (his staples are fried spam and vodka). Plus, it deals with the crushing moments that befall us all, writing or not writing, when we least expect them — un-cared for tenants, ex-wives wanting money, and the constant pursuit of hangers-on we don’t exactly have time for. A good read for when we’re feeling  like we’re slightly flailing, especially when we’re wondering if Andrew Whittaker’s set-up of a literary festival can save him…or plunge him further into a frustrated writers’ abyss.

3. I need a fairy godmother to help transform the pumpkin dresses I have been seeing of late into something a little more glamorous and right up my fashion-alley. You see, my parents have decided to throw a little dinner to celebrate my engagement. Although I am of the belief that engagements are personal and are supposed to be intimate, I am the first child in the family to be married and they’re a tad bit keen to share as much of the journey as possible. Unfortunately, this gives me more grief than pleasure at this stage – A), I can’t find a cocktail dress worth wearing that costs less than $400 (I have a wedding to save for!); B), I am a little concerned with the way that my loud, large Lebanese family will fare with James’ small, reserved Anglo one, and C) the guest list is already causing tension that I just do not have the time and effort to deal with in my post-hospitalisation state. Either way, this is one soiree that needs the perfect amount of style, smarts and savoir-faire if we are to call it a success.

5. Pretty things make every girl’s blue days seem a little brighter. In the weeks since I have come out of hospital, I have found solace in the smallest things. Today, it’s all about a smiley Reese Witherspoon on a festive InStye cover, and a pretty pink cupcake filled with cream. Coupled with the gorgeous teapot I’ve just bought from T2, it’s gonna make for a very relaxing afternoon.

igelkottsförsvaret

För några år sedan gjorde jag min militärtjänstgöring på terrängregementet T2 i Skövde. Det var en fin vårdag med sol, frostnypet gräs och is på vattenpölarna. Övningen för dagen var igelkottsförsvar med skarpa skjutvapen. Vi kördes på lastbilsflak rakt ut i skogen och stannade vid en glänta. Den skarpa ammunitionen delades ut och fänriken meddelade oss att fienden för dagen var kvadratmeter stora plåtar som hade luftlandssatts i ett närbeläget grustag.

Jag minns inte vilken nationalitet som fienden representerade men jag är säker på att han sa det. Troligen var det ryssen. Fänriken pekade ner i marken och vi satte oss i en ring med våra skjutjärn över axlarna. Ett gäng kottar, barkbitar, grenar samt patronhylsor lades upp på marken och fogades samman tills de bildade en karta över terrängen och fienden – åtminstone enligt Fänriken. Jag minns att det såg osymmetriskt ut och jag var nära att flytta på två kottar för att göra bilden trevligare men avstod turligt nog.

Där satt vi alltså med våra dödliga skjutjärn av modell AK4 och lekte med kottar. Jag kommer ihåg att tankarna fladdrade iväg när en skogsmyra mycket långsamt försökte bestiga en av hylsorna. Undra vad han tänkte om den blanka dödliga projektilen. Han hade kanske aldrig träffat på en sådan förut och försökte nu lista ut vad det var. Det var säkert skönt att krypa på den byxvarma ammunitionen. Jag är säker på att alla tänkte på något åt det hållet, kanske inte myrhistorien, men något annat än att fienden var av plåt och att vi satt där och tittade på medans fänriken lekte med kottar.

Skyddsmasker

Ett igelkottsförsvar bildas snabbt efter att gruppbefälet sätter sin knutna hand på hjälmen, det är tecknet. De övriga soldaterna i gruppen bildar då en ring med blickarna och skjutjärnen riktade utåt. Tanken är att skydda sig mot en fiende som man inte riktigt vet var man har. För att göra övningen lite mera realistisk så kom vår begåvade fänrik dessutom på snilledraget med att ha skyddsmasker (gasmasker som det felaktigt ibland kallas) på oss under hela anfallet.

Övningen startade och vi sprang iväg. Det dröjde inte många meter innan vi flåsade och skyddsmaskerna började imma igen. Jag tog fäste på en ryggtavla framför mig som verkade springa åt det hål som patronhylsorna på marken hade illustrerat.

Efter fem minuter kom vi fram till ett stup och jag är tacksam än i dag att det uppenbarade sig i tid. Vi slängde oss på marken och i ögonvrån såg vi fänriken ta upp en radiostyrd låda. Snart reste sig de nyss landsatta ryssarna i botten av grustaget. Ryssarna eller plåtarna stupade snabbt när våra kulor träffade dem. Jag vill minnas att de var ett tjogotal fiender som miste livet vid det tillfället.

Reträtten

Fänriken blåste till reträtt och vi sprang tillbaka och bildade vårt igelkottsförsvar. Jag var totalt slut av språngmarschen och pulsen låg på max. Då smäller det ett skott. Den tystnad som uppstod går inte att beskriva. Under tio sekunder rusar tankarna i huvudet. Ingen skriker men det behöver man inte göra om skottet har träffat någon i huvudet. Tillslut vänder jag på huvudet inåt gruppen och ser då Lidköpingsdrängen stå upp och titta på sin AK4.

Det blev inga repressalier efter den incidenten. Det är möjligt att säkringen glidit upp under språngmarschen eller troligare att den aldrig blev säkrad under reträtten. Språngmarschen och tröttheten gjorde troligen att Drängens fingrar levde ett eget liv över skjutjärnet utan att han tänkte på det.

Jag minns inte hans riktiga namn men det är oviktigt. Han var i alla fall bondräng i Lidköpingstrakten, det kommer jag väl ihåg. Ingen blev dock skadad och vi åkte chockade hemåt till regementet på vårt lastbilsflak utan att prata med varandra.

Naturen har tagit efter den svenska militärens igelkottsförsvar, där alla tittar åt var sitt håll. Det kan också vara så att militären tagit efter fåglarnas försvarsstrategi, det är troligen det mest rimliga, men vad vet jag.
