“There is no single technological solution that will function equally well for every teacher, every course, or every pedagogical approach.” But, there are lots of ways to incorporate technology, using strong pedagogical and content knowledge foundations to introduce and reinforce student learning.

There are many ways to incorporate technology into your current teaching style and content area. Creating activity structures and using different technology tools can enhance learning a particular curriculum, and learning more about technology at the same time.

Digital Citizenship

Like other kinds of citizenship, it is important to teach digital citizenship both inside and outside of the classroom. This develops skills that lead to an organized and well-behaved society. To follow the rules, you have to know the rules. As technology advances and there are increasing ways of communicating through diverse and changing technologies, standards need to be created and explained that will keep these forms of communication from being misused and abused. Examples of this misuse are “using Web sites to intimidate or threaten students, downloading music illegally from the Internet, plagiarizing information using the Internet, using cellular phones during class time, and playing games on laptops during class.”

The National Educational Technology Standards can be used as a starting point for developing better digital citizenship and even has a rubric of standards of behavior available for teachers. These standards have been developed to act as a guide to nine general areas of behavior that make up digital citizenship. Etiquette: (1) is the electronic standard of conduct or procedure. Communication: (2) includes electronic exchange of information. Education: (3) is the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology. Access: (4) encompasses full electronic participation in society. Commerce: (5) the electronic buying and selling of goods. Responsibility: (6) responsibility for electronic actions and deeds. Rights: (7) are those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world. Safety: (8) is the physical well being in a digital technology world and Security: (9) (self-protection) electronic precautions to guarantee safety. This general area’s can be discussed, and exemplified by teachers in the classroom to lead students toward using their own technology in appropriate ways.

Teachers and Adults can be the best examples in a student’s life of using technologies appropriately. Students learn by example especially when it comes to citizenship. This is also true of digital citizenship. In the beginning of the school year the teacher usually sets up a list of their expectations and standards and based on this article at that time I would also cover the expectations of digital citizenship both in and out of the classroom. “Using the National Educational Technology Standards to help understand how technology should be used in curriculum and applying digital citizenship to help define students’ behavior will facilitate the development of well-rounded technology-savvy students.”

When was the last time you felt really creative? When did you last look at the world and tools around you, decide to create something that was really fun, work with your friends or co-workers to make it even better, then tear it down and start again? Mitchel Resnick in his article All I Really Need to Know (About Creative Thinking) I learned (by Studying How Children Learn) in Kindergarten has been studying how we think creatively, and he found the most creative thinking during the school years happens in kindergarten.

In the 21st century change is taking place faster than ever before. Resnick states, “In a society characterized by uncertainty and rapid change, the ability to think creatively is becoming the key to success and satisfaction, both professionally and personally . The challenge he feels is that “Instead of making kindergarten like the rest of school, we need to make the rest of school (indeed, the rest of life) more like kindergarten.” Resnick feels that we need to incorporate more creating, experimenting and exploring rather than continue in the traditional ways of teacher driven learning. Going back to the creative processes of kindergarten allows for students to think on their own to develop ways to work together and solve problems of school and life instead of waiting for someone to ‘give them the answer’.

Resnick discusses the processes that take place in kindergarten that we could apply to higher grade-level education. These include five thought processes: imagine, create, play, share, and reflect. In kindergarten there are lots of media options, toys and tools that encourage children to use this type of learning cycle. In the past, as children got older there were fewer tools available for this type of interaction. Now, however, there are strategies for designing new technologies that promote the kindergarten style of learning.

Cricket technology developed by Resnick’s research group consists of small programmable devices that students can plug motors, lights, sensors and other electronic blocks into then program their cricket creations to perform different activities. Each child can use crickets in a totally different way, encouraging them to create what has meaning and importance them. Children can imagine and create many different things using the Cricket technology. Scratch is another technology tool that also encourages individual creative learning. Scratch is designed to “use familiar building block command structures that enables designers to create or incorporate existing images and sound files into their videogames, interactive art, and video production.” In pages seven through 15 Karai and Peppler discuss different projects created using scratch by teens in an urban LA computer clubhouse. The designs and levels of interaction varied between the children, but the creative process and forms of participation created learning opportunities outside of school for these middle and high-school minority youths. In the end the authors felt that “In the digital age, media education needs to foster both critical understanding and creative production of new media to encourage urban youth to be consumers, designers and inventors of new technologies.”

Both articles discussed the need to have tools available to encourage older children to use creative thinking, collaboration and reflection as a way of learning. I too feel that this is very important. Today’s children will need to function successfully in a rapidly changing technological and social world. They will need to be creative, and work well with their peers to come up with solutions to many problems that other generations have not had to face. To do this they will need to have creative thinking skills developed throughout their school years. “By extending the kindergarten approach, we hope to provide opportunities for learners of all ages to build on their kindergarten experiences, iteratively refining their abilities as creative thinkers throughout their lives.”

Every year a whole slew of peeps ask me if I am willing to do their taxes. As I work as an accountant all day, everyday, I tend to be quite tired of accountantcy once I am home. So I do my friends’ takes grudgingly, with the proviso that I require a meal in return — and I will not accept McDonald’s, Harvey’s, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell or Wendy’s. I want a real meal, not some $2.99 meal deal with a 2-for-1 coupon attached to it.

I, naturally as a dutiful child, do my parental units’ taxes. Years ago, when my father was rushing to get to Australia to take care of his brother who had just suffered 2 heart attacks and a stroke, my father asked me to do my mother’s taxes. Until 1997 my father had always done his and my mother’s taxes…. but March 1998 was different, he didn’t have time cos of the rush trip to Australia. As I was in the CGA Programme of Studies at the time my father asked me to complete mum’s.

I did her taxes, reviewed prior year filings and noted that my father had never claimed any of his union dues. I claimed 5 years worth of dues on my mother’s taxes. There were also other tax credits which I applied from prior years (there are certain tax deductible expenses that you can accumulate up to a 5 year period which you can then claim all at once). Needless to say, my mum got a big fat refund of $1300 while my father tended to get her about $300-400 each year. The following year my father asked my mum to hand over her T4 and other tax slips… she said no, that she’d prefer her Bean to do them for her, as I get her bigger refunds. The bint never told my dad how much I got her as a refund, and when he found out the yearly demands started — We gave you life, do our taxes. So since 1999 my parents have not done their own taxes. I manage to take advantage of all the loopholes for them, so they get nice little fat cheques; which they really need as every penny counts when an OAP.

Onto my friends… they are terrified of taxes. I don’t know why, really. Taxes are relatively easy and can be quickly filled out in about 15-20 minutes. So they ask me to help. I don’t mind, up to a limit of 5 friends.

I have had people try to barter for my “services” – for things like ceremonial knives (athames), wands, silversmithing services, whatnot. I can’t pay the rent with a pretty knife, or a wand or jewellry. In today’s capitalistic western society money still talks, so I need money. I do accept a meal, because it means that I will be economically benefitting from such a meal — I won’t have to pay for the meal, and/or the groceries for that week.

So to those friends who want me to do their taxes — only 5 of you. If you come as a pair I will count you as “one”. And as a reminder, I am lactose-intolerant, don’t like fish and have developed a distaste for pasta and bread.

Alexa Chung. . . where do I start?

Her style is one of a kind and gets all the fashion magazines bowing down at her feet.

She really has got it all. The rockstar boyfriend, the perfect hair and the amazing fashion sense. . . jammy cow. She’s best known for her preppy, grandma, effortless look. It is as though she’s just thrown on some random clothes and walked out of the door, but it looks so good! Even on the red carpet, she keeps things very minamilistic which works to her advantage, making her stand out even more.

You have all probably heard about her show over in the states, on MTV, where she interviews other celebrities, but all people really care about is what she wears. Each day, a photo of her outfit is uploaded onto their website so that everybody can talk about how great she looked, where she got things from and just generally stare at her.

Even our very own “Auntie Gok” has had Alexa helping him out with his Fashion Fix show, on Channel 4. We’ve even seen her as the new face of New Look during the summer.

We all saw Alexa’s career take off  when she was ’that’ presenter on T4 and wore all those brilliant clothes. She is a brilliantly talented presenter, who entertained us for many weekend mornings, but hse has got to be known best for her style. Since she’s left, no-one has been able to fill her beautiful boots due to her unique, quirky yet refreshing dress sense.

I don’t actually have anything to write about tbh. I’m just bored. Watching a really old Hallowe’en Simpsons on T4. The Simpson’s were much weirder then! The older the episodes are, the weirder they are!

Soooo X-Factor tonight! I think it’s all a load of rubbish personally. I don’t think any of them are particularly good. Stacey is the only decent singer left so if I had to choose, she’d be who I wanted to win. I hate Danyl, I think he’s a rubbish singer and I think people are starting to see through it! He just yells. I wish that they’d give him (& the twins) a ballad that he wasn’t allowed to yell but SING. Ugh, he gets on my nerves. Jamie isn’t bad, I liked his version of “Hurt” but nothing since then. Olly was disappointing last night and I love Joe. I think he’s really good and definitely the best male vocalist out of them all! I’m not even gonna comment on Jedward. Who else is there? Is that it? Who am I forgetting? Oh, I forgot about Lloyd! Hahaha. Awww. He’s cute but he can’t sing, the poor thing. He’s got a singing voice, but it’s not big enough or good enough for this type of thing. I mean, for once, I agree with Louis (he’s so annoying and out of touch) and say that he’d be better in a boyband!!! I hope either Lloyd, Twins or Danyl bugger orf tonight but I don’t see it =(

I only really like Dannii and I think that Cheryl Cole is an idiot! Simon Cowell just makes me LOL (especially when I was looking at old Pop Idol videos last night – his hair! Lmao!)

Is this blog actually going anywhere??? I’m just rambling now. What was I going to say?

I was up late last night talking to Allan and Rose whilst waiting to see if anything was happening with Kayleigh (she didn’t text me so I assume it was just a warning sign). I must say, I have had less bizaare conversations! Lol! I like Lumpy’s friends. Probably because they’re not that much younger than me and they’re all pretty mature. I can’t wait until they’re all 18, I’ll take them out clubbing =P (as long as James Steward doesn’t swallow any straws??) I suppose it’s similar in the way that I’m close to Neville, Michael and Christian. I know that I grew up with them but there’s not much difference in age there either, is there? They’re only four years older than me and thinking about it, age gaps in friends aren’t really important. I mean, one of my bestest closest friends is Amanda and she’s 28! We’re on the same wavelength and we like the same things. She makes me laugh because she’s just so funny and I love being around her. She’s a good listener too and gives good advice.

It doesn’t matter where your friends live either, as long as they’re there. Take Nico and Raj for example. Nico lives in Denmark and Raj lives even further away in America! Both of them are my best friends and they’re always there for me and vice versa. Hopefully both of them are coming to see me next year and we’ll go out and drink and have fun. Taking Nico to Brighton for a night! That’ll be amazing.

Why is channel 4 going 3D? They’re so weird but I love them. Definitely my favourite channel. I call it the rebel channel and I asked my mum if they’ve always been the same and she said, “y-yeah, they’ve always been a bit weird.” haha!

Watched a new impressions show last night and it was hilarious! My favourite ones were Davina McCall, Michael McIntyre and Noel Edmonds. The Davina one almost had me in tears! It was so funny and spot on!

Clueless is on tonight! I love that film.

For the last hour, I’ve been watching videos of Will Young from 2002 and realising that “I still get that sentimental feeeeeeling” when it comes to him. I loved him and actually, I’m not ashamed to say that I still do! I don’t care!

Even after 7 years, I can still remember release dates and what I recorded on video. I have a plastic wallet full of magazine cuttings. I even have 2 mini posters on my wall after all these years! I listen to his “From Now On” (released on the 7th of October 2002) album and I still feel the same way when I hear it.

I saw him at London Arena on the 3rd of October 2002 and at the Regents Street lights on the 14th of November 2002 where he sang “You and I” and “Winter Wonderland”

Seeing some of those videos was a strange experience tbh. It was almost as if it wasn’t 7 years ago that I recorded them! I still remember it. Especially the T4 interviews with Simon Amstell and Miquita! They were on tv when Light My Fire was released (27th of May 2002). I still remember waking up that muggy May morning when it premiered on GMTV and I think there was an interview too.

As people who know me know, “Friday’s Child” is my favourite song and it was a weird coincidence when the woman played it at my birthday! The “Friday’s Child” album is good too and it reminds me of Xmas 2003.

For a while now I’ve been living in 2002. From Angel to Will to the stormy night in Selsey. I guess I was happy in 2001-2005. I had two different eras happen at once and sadly, they’re both over now. They say that you learn and grow up and I guess that’s true. Everybody has their own life now and although that’s all in my past now, somehow, it’s shaped my future. I’ll never be able to look at certain things and not think of things that remind me of them again but that’s a good thing. I’m not bitter about those eras, in fact, it’s the complete opposite.

OMG KAYLEGH! I think it’s started for her! It’s 00:58 and she’s told me that she’s “actually having a baby”!!! Ooooh! How exciting!!! IT BEGINS! Funny how I was just talking about eras and maybe a new one is about to start????

I have to admit to never being happy with it, if you saw it before you will see what I mean, if you didn’t you did not miss anything but it now makes me smile, well the homepage does, the other pages will be improved gradually over time as there are more pressing avenues I have to follow to be able to continue the Custom work on the T4 itself.

A quick rundown, White T4 Builders Van, 2.5 Blue TDi, standard, chopped side panels out fitted windows, added a set of 16″ Audi A4 Alloys, wind deflectors, gutted the inside, fully insulated the panels, carpeted the interior and a new ply lining and roof, added a futon, built a skimboard table, added a seat and storage, lights, Steering Wheel chandalier from first Beetle, Surfboard rack, longboard (skateboard), kenwood stereo, curtains being made right now, etc, etc.

Its not finished yet (never will be) but its tripping to the beach with boards weekly right now so musn’t grumble ;-D

I learned what a wiki is! The article “The wiki way of learning” was my first introduction to wiki’s. I did not have any idea what they were, or how they were used. I thought wikipedia was just a cute online name for an encyclopedia. I did not realize that anyone could add or edit content to be published as knowledge.

I found the study using the Mobil Workforce Technologies class to evaluate the wiki product for use in classrooms interesting. I can now see how this tool could be used a lot in science, to work on hypothesis, gather data, and share results. It was interesting that the MWT class students were worried about copying others works or having their work stolen and had to get used to the idea of sharing data. It seems the other reason that it worked so well for this class was that is was set up with undergraduate students and post graduate students, and each of them would bring a different perspective to the class so that some at times could act as the expert, and at other times the novice. Alison Ruth states that “The wiki becomes a space for interpersonal interactions where learning and sharing of knowledge occurs between individuals – novices and experts.” Both groups learn from each other, and the same person can at one time be the novice, and the next time is the expert.

The need to know about the wiki, how it works, and even be ‘wiki certified’ to enter the next stage of interaction seemed to make a lot of sense. In fact I think that anytime you are entering into a new social community network on the internet it is important that you first understand the medium so that you know add unnecessary pages or comments to the project. I also liked the idea of having a live chat space instead of just a ‘shout out’ site that ended up being used as a chat space. One of the things missing in post, read, post technology is that spontaneity that comes from sharing, and discussing idea’s real time. The chat space would be one way to facilitate that.
