Conclusions - Заключение

As anyone who has every struggled to get reception or use the tiny keys on one of the latest ultra compact mobile phones can tell you, having the smallest, slimmest possible form factor means accepting a certain amount of compromise. In digital camera terms this means accepting that having something you can slip into your pocket probably won’t offer the same image quality, versatility or ergonomics as something more substantial.

That said we were pleased to see that in general terms the latest generation of ultra compact cameras produces surprisingly good results, and that all are capable of capturing images that will print well at normal print sizes. Unless you’re pushing the ISO in low light all will give you sharp prints at 8×10 inches, and even at the highest ISO settings I doubt anyone would complain about the quality of a postcard print from most of these cameras. Crucially all the cameras here will wipe the floor with any cell phone camera, not only in terms of image quality but in general responsiveness, versatility, features and usability.

Whether the compromises that the slimmest, smallest, coolest-looking cameras demand are an issue or not will depend on the individual user. We found some of the cameras put style over utility to such a degree that they were almost impossible to hold in a steady, stable way. And don’t try using those tiny buttons with gloves on, either.

From an image quality point of view it’s less clear cut; the truth is that there’s little difference between any compact camera over about $100 until you get right to the top of tree, and that few of the models in this group offer better IQ than those we tested in the budget group last week. In fact the opposite is often the case; the folded optics used in the very slimmest cameras are (with the notable exception of the Sony T700) no match for more conventional zoom lenses, but you really need to be pixel peeping to see any problems; at normal viewing magnifications it’s simply not an issue.

An old photographer’s adage is that the best camera in the world is the one you’ve got with you, and there’s no getting away from the fact that having a slim camera in your pocket at all times is going to get you a far better picture than a high end SLR you left at home because it’s too bulky. With this in mind our assessment of this group was based far less on pixel level image quality and far more on the print quality, the reliability of the automatic exposure, white balance and focus systems, the performance of the flash in low light situations and on the overall usability. If you really want to pixel peep you can easily do so using the samples in the review.

Image quality: outdoors / daylight

If you mainly shoot outdoors in good light any of the cameras here will do the job, with little to choose between the better cameras here unless you intend to print at sizes larger than about 8×10 inches. That said there is a visible difference in sharpness / detail between the best and worst, with the Canon SD790 IS taking the top spot and the Fujifilm Z200fd, Olympus 1040 and Nikon S210 coming out worst. Overall ranking takes into account not only sharpness but color, metering, white balance, focus and contrast. I must stress that for this particular test the differences are very small:

Best of the bunch: Canon PowerShot SD 790 IS, Panasonic FX37

Middle of the road: Pentax Optio S12, Sony T700, Nikon S210

Bottom of the class: Fujifilm Z200fd, Casio S10, Olympus Stylus 1040

Image quality: Low light / High ISO

Shooting at anything over base ISO, and particularly when you start to get to the higher reaches of the ISO range, produces far more variation in the performance of the different models, with some clear winners and some obvious losers (though even the best ain’t that good and all are suitable only for small prints) – and again the real difference in quality from best to worst isn’t huge. If you do a lot of photography in low light without flash these results will be important to you:

Best of the bunch: Panasonic FX37, Pentax Optio S12, Canon PowerShot SD 790 IS

Middle of the road: Olympus Stylus 1040, Sony T700

Bottom of the class: Casio S10, Nikon S210, Nikon S60, Fujifilm Z200fd

Image quality / performance: Flash

For this we took the overall flash performance; exposure, color, low light focus and ability to remove red-eye. We also factored in flash recycle time, with cameras taking more than a couple of seconds marked down:

Best of the bunch: Canon PowerShot SD 790 IS, Sony T700, Panasonic FX37

Middle of the road: Pentax Optio S12, Nikon S60, Nikon S210

Bottom of the class: Casio S10, Fujifilm Z200fd, Olympus Stylus 1040

Ratings and recommendations

When it comes to the finish line picking a winner for this group was surprisingly difficult, with few models doing everything well and few doing anything particularly badly. From an image quality point of view it’s the Canon SD790 IS by a nose, though by the time you hit ISO 800 any differences are masked by noise, noise reduction or both. In a pack just behind the Canon are the Panasonic FX37, Pentax S12, Sony T700 and Nikon Coolpix T700, with the Fuji Z200fd, Casio S10 trailing behind by a couple of lengths.

Of the really, really slim cameras here the Casio S10, which everyone fell for as soon as it came out of the box, was the most disappointing from an image quality point of view, whereas the Sony T700 went some way to justifying its high price by being not only the coolest kid on the block but also putting in a surprisingly good showing in all our tests. If the T700’s price is a bit rich for you then we’d suggest you take a look at its baby brother, the Cyber-Shot T77. An honorable mention must go to the Nikon Coolpix S210, far and away the cheapest camera in the group but one of the slimmest, and producing images that, whilst not the best here, are far from being the worst.

Eventually we had to decide, and decide we did, though as before we found it impossible to pick a singe standalone winner.

Runners up: Sony DSC-T700 and Nikon Coolpix S210

None of the ultra slim cameras deserved the top spot but two stood out as being worthy of mention. The Sony T700 is far and away the most stylish camera here, offers good image quality and has the fastest focus of the group and excellent flash performance. We were put off by the price and by the fact that it doesn’t make use of the stunning high resolution of its screen at all in record mode, but it was still the best of the size zero models. At the other end of the scale is the Nikon S210, a camera that offers a super slim and compact casing and perfectly decent performance at a remarkably low price. It’s easy to use, simple and efficient and shows that you don’t always ‘get what you pay for’ – sometimes you get a lot more.

Joint winners: Canon SD 790 IS and Panasonic DMC-FX37

The best all round camera in this group – in terms of image quality, handling and performance – was the Canon SD790 IS, especially at lower ISO settings, where it easily matches high end compacts aimed at enthusiast users. But the SD790 IS lacks any real standout features; from the 35-105mm zoom range to the boxy styling this is Canon playing it safe, resulting in a camera that sits firmly in the ’solid and reliable’ camp. That’s not a bad thing, and for those of us who place image quality far higher on our list of priorities the SD 790 IS doesn’t disappoint.

The FX37 is a far more interesting proposition, and though it can’t match the SD790’s resolution or sharpness, it shares many of its qualities; natural colors, reliable exposure and focus, responsive operation and a simple, logical control system. But it’s more pocketable, has some very neat features and – crucially for us – offers a considerably more versatile zoom range (covering 25-125mm), which gives you real wideangle capabilities without sacrificing the short telephoto that is so useful for head and shoulders portraits. On this capability alone the FX37 would be a candidate for the top spot, but since it’s a pretty good little camera too makes it an easy choice.

Sony debuts its most daring digital cameras to date

Sydney – 13 August, 2008 – Sony Australia has today announced two new daring additions to its T series range of Cyber-shot digital cameras. Continuing to up the ante when it comes to form and function, the new Album T (DSC-T700) and T Slim (DSC-T77) are even more sophisticated than their predecessors, with advances in image capture, storage, search and sharing capabilities.

Both models showcase 10.1 megapixels, 4 x optical zoom, Optical Steady Shot, Carl Zeiss lens and the popular Face Detection and Smile Shutter functionalities. However, as their names suggest, it is the innovative album function and slimline body that put them in a class of their own.

“Sony continues to take the lead in developing intelligent cameras that not only take great pictures, but make you stand out in a crowd,” said Kieran Gallagher, Cyber-shot Senior Product Manager for Sony Australia. “The new Album T and T Slim do just that, packing bigger features into smaller, sleeker designs.”

Album T (DSC-T700)
Boasting a 4GB internal memory, the Album T serves as a portable photo album, allowing you to capture and carry up to 40,000 photos with you. Its unique album function boasts a calendar playback menu that remembers pictures according to the date that they were taken and can also stores pictures in favourite folders. With instant search capabilities, users can quickly find a certain image by face type, be it a child’s face or smiling friend.

The Album T packs all of these features into four slimline metallic finishes of grey, red, silver and gold, each with a 3.5″ LCD touch screen.

New and improved shooting features
These two new T series models feature advancements to the highly popular Smile Shutter function. A Smile Shutter icon has been added to the touch screen allowing the function to be activated with a single press and enabling continuous shooting when smiling faces are detected.

Enhanced Intelligent Scene Recognition, which automatically determines the optimum camera setting for every scene, provides easier operation and higher-quality results. The Auto mode takes a single shot with optimised automatic settings, while the Advanced mode takes two shots at different settings, allowing the user to select the preferred shot. This provides greater protection against mistakes when shooting in difficult conditions, such as at night or in backlit scenes.

Similarly, the brand new ‘Anti-blink’ technology cuts the risk of closed eyes spoiling portraits of friends and family, while Portrait mode shoots two images in quick succession, automatically throwing away pictures where the subject’s eyes are closed.

A retractable Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens enables close-up shooting and zooming during photography up to 1cm from the subject in Magnifying Glass mode and the improved Dynamic Range Optimiser (DRO) determines the best exposure and contrast settings in almost any shooting environment.

In-camera retouching is a feature also included within the Album T and T Slim, with ten editing functions available to ensure no red eye goes un-missed. This function also allows the addition of effects such as cross filters and radial blurs.

Advanced sharing capabilities
The Scrapbook function is a unique way to showcase your collection of photos, which automatically creates a handmade looking album from pictures in the memory. With 16 backgrounds to choose from, images can be displayed based on information such as creation date, subject frequency, or sequentially in a slide show. The scrapbook can store nearly 1,000 high resolution (three megabytes) or 40,000 low resolution (VGA quality) photos and can be printed or displayed on an HDTV.

Share photos in stunningly clear High Definition by connecting an Album T or T Slim to a Full HD BRAVIA LCD TV with a component cable. When a Cyber-shot digital camera is connected to a HD BRAVIA LCD TV, the camera can be controlled with the TV’s remote control, thanks to BRAVIA Sync compatibility.

HD Slide Show with Music “Photo Music” is an inbuilt application that combines images with music to produce showstopping slide shows. Five standard effects (Simple, Basic, Nostalgic, Active and Stylish) are now supplemented with three Face Priority effects (Face Priority 1: Basic, Face Priority 2: Nostalgic and Face Priority 3: Stylish) and can be played back with one of eight music tracks stored in the camera’s memory.

Users can watch a slide show of all recorded images or limit the playback by simply selecting a face type or date on the screen. More personalised slide shows are also possible by transferring favourite tunes from a PC to the Cyber-shot digital camera.

The new additions to the Cyber-shot T series range of digital cameras from Sony are available in Australia from September 2008.

Now, the review. Sony has never been renown for it’s digital photography. But they sure have improved on the image quality substantially. Sony clamours for recognition by convincing Carl Zeiss to provide the camera’s internal lens and going for the hardware aesthetics.

This they win hands down. In debuting one of the slimmest digital cameras and the flagship product in their T line, the T700 is in fine form with it’s brushed metal appearance and astounding 3.5″ touch screen. Removing most of the physical buttons (saved for the power, playback and zoom buttons), the user must rely on touching the screen’s menus and preferences.

The touch screen looks gorgeous, saved for the rather stretched out (pixelated) menu options. It looks like the exact menu buttons and GUI layout from previous T models, but to be displayed on a 3″ screen instead. This could be deem as poor foresight, or just lazy engineering. Another fact is, the touch screen is prone to fingerprints, smudging and poor response from the users touch.

The huge internal 4GB memory is another clear winner. No longer do you need to carry multiple memory cards or purchase the expensive proprietary Memory Stick Duo PRO (this camera does not support Sony’s original Memory Stick). Instead, digital images and movies can be stored internally. This makes it convenient, and allows the T700 to double as a photo album or be used to display images on a HDTV (through their HD output connector).

Actual photography and samples will be scrutinised and published at a later date. The T700 comes in an array of colours – grey, silver, champagne, pink and red. It was an obvious choice that grey would be the one for me (for those who know, I am adversed to colours).

But DigitalCameraReview.com succinctly reviews the camera -

CONCLUSIONS
Hands down, the T700 is certainly the best looking, most solidly built small camera we’ve had the pleasure of shooting with this year. Sony usually earns serious points for style and build quality in our evaluations, but the general opinion around here is that they’ve even outdone themselves with this model. We shoot with a lot of cameras, and in my experience it’s rare that random people will approach you to ask about your camera – especially if it’s a point-and-shoot. But it happened with the T700. More than once. It really does look that good.

With all of its strengths on the style front and some solid performance marks besides, we’re tempted to let the T700 off the hook for its generally lackluster showing in our image quality analysis. Certainly, if you’re not hoping for more than a camera for taking pictures of friends and family to post online or make regular-sized prints from, the T700’s image quality is generally very livable. But there’s no denying the presence of some objectively serious flaws – from color fringing, to excessive saturation, to blown-out highlights, to shaggy high-ISO images – in the T700’s sample shots.

So how to rate this Cyber-shot on balance? Like so many things, that all depends on user expectations and preferences. In our view, you can’t get anything with more aesthetic appeal at the moment, and so long as you have realistic expectations for the T700’s images, this alone may be reason enough to justify the purchase. If you’re the type who likes to spend time dissecting the details of your shots, however, the T700 will give you plenty to agonize over.

Pros:

Possibly the most stylish camera on the market

Huge internal memory is easy to access with supplied software

Auto focus speed among the best available from a point-and-shoot

Auto options galore: face detection, smile detection, blink detection

Touch screen idea is still neat after several generations

Cons:

Menus are dense, confusing, and sometimes redundant

Terrible fringing issues in boundary areas can ruin shots

Erratic metering and white balance

Noise beyond ISO 200 hasn’t improved much over older T cameras

Average flash performance, battery life

Premium price may limit appeal

Sony Ericsson T700 in short:

Extremely good looking phone that slim (10 mm) too. Comes in three attractive color combos (silver and black, red and black, and shining silver). Comes with all powerful 3.2 mega pixel camera.
Sony Ericsson T700 in bit more detail:

Are you a fan of slim phones? This is one of very few good looking slim phones I have ever seen. Just like any other Sony Ericsson phone this has very good sound quality and a built in music player. As we all know Sony Ericsson 3.2 mega pixel camera is one of the best in the industry. There is no serious drawback in this phone. There is no need of any suspicions! Though let me warn you the auto focus is not as great as in other camera models of Sony Ericsson.

The battery backup is good gives nearly about 9.5 hours talk time. The user interface is damn cool comparable with any high-end models. It comes with 2 inches (diagonal) screen (320 X 240). Though this screen size is not very great, I will say this is the ideal screen size for phones. As many other Sony Ericsson phones T700 has m2 memory stick and unlike many other models this phone comes with 512 mb built-in memory stick.

T700’s pros / advantages:

The size and weight is the biggest plus point of this phone. It’s weight is just 78 grams. It’s a slim phone with just 10mm thickness. The look and feel and the wide variety of colors and color combinations is another thing that is attractive!

T700’s cons / drawbacks:

The quality of the auto focus and lack of great flash!

Who should buy:

People who love to carry a great looking phone. Yes, if you think keeping attractive phone is a must then go for this model… many heads will turn to get a glance of this slim phone (104 x 48 x 10 mm).

Who should not be buying:

If good camera camera is what precisely you are looking for then K790i / K800i should be your phone of choice as it comes with great xenon flash and bestpic facility and it is more trustworthy as it is around for couple of years!

Complete feature list:

Camera: 3.2 mega pixel with auto focus, photo fix (automatic light, contrast and balance adjustment) and photo light (the ability of taking good snaps even in poor light), LED flash and self-portrait mirror

Music: Music player and built-in stereo speaker

Memory: Call history – keeps record of 30 calls (incoming, outgoing and missed all put together), card slot – M2 (comes with 512 mb memory card)

Battery: Stand by upto 370 hours and talk time up to 9 hours and 30 mins

Color options: Black on silver, black on red and shiny silver

FM Radio, SMS, MMS, Email, USB connector, Bluetooth and Infrared: Yes

Wi-fi: No

Sony Ericsson T700 Price:

It costs around Rs. 8000 or USD 170. Damn good phone for the price!!

iPhone prices are out…
Steve jobs boasted of $200(around 8000rs) price tag.. but in india we will have to pay around $800(around 31000Rs) to get hold of one iPhone through proper channels.
Its cheaper to get hold of a unlocked iphone from from US market.. it costs only around $550 only. some stores sells it at even lesser price. The price tag will defintly refrain a vast majority of those who have already booked iphone from going further for the purchase.

I’m eagerly waiting to get the statistics of how many will get a new iphone from india

If you are going to get one iphone for that high price let me tell you ou are sick.. yo can get a htc diamond or nokia n95 for a lower price tag. if you are looking for more at lower price wait till sony ericsson’s T700 is out in october.

Lucky that i changed my mind and went for a low cost mobile (nokia 3500c) instead of waiting for the iphone
