Swype is a text input method that has been in development for the last 7 years, created by the inventor of the T9 predictive text dictionary. It recently debuted on the Samsung Omnia II, and is set to be available on forthcoming Nokia and Samsung devices in 2010.

Swype is designed to make typing on touchscreens more accurate by letting users drag their finger from letter to letter rather than having to tap each individual key. The software will then decide what word you are typing based on when your finger pauses or changes direction. As the software predicts what words you are going to type, users can input roughly 40 words per minute allowing for messages to be composed a lot quicker.

So far, Swype has received good reviews from sources such as CNET and Samsung Omnia II users, but it is not the first time that a company has tried to introduce an alternate keyboard, as mentioned in this post at Android And Me. However, after a significant amount of funding (just over $7 million to date), including a substantial amount from Nokia and Samsung, it seems that Swype could be a winner.

TechCrunch stated in November that Swype would be coming to Android in early 2010, which could give it some real firepower as it looks to take the edge over Apple next year. TechCrunch also published the video below of a text race between the iPhone and a Samsung Omnia II using Swype. The Omnia II easily wins, but it could be argued that a practised iPhone user could keep up fairly well.

It looks like Swype will be a welcomed form of text input, and could be a wise investment on the part of Nokia and Samsung. The Omnia II gives you the option to revert back to a normal touch input if you do not like the Swype keyboard, so your options are not limited. If Swype is successful on smaller handsets it is likely to be very popular indeed. We eagerly await 2010 devices to see how it fairs out.

If you’ve been using Swype on the Omnia II, please post a comment to let us know how you’ve been getting on with it!

At this point I’m sure you’ve heard all of the arguments both for and against the relative easiness of getting geared in full tier 9 simply by doing heroics. From what I’ve read, I don’t think I really fall into either camp. Here are some of the main reasons that I’m going after a full tier 9 set.

It’s A Goal: This one is pretty important for me and it’s part of the reason that I stopped playing Chipdipson. With Chip, I was close to gaining exalted reputation with Ebon Blade. Coincidentally enough, that was the last faction I was grinding. With no other real rewards from heroics, I quickly became disinterested. Also, without being in a solid raid group, the carrot on a stick of the T9 gear will more than keep me interested in heroics.

It Looks Cool: Pretty self-explanatory. Since I started playing the game, I’ve never had a full set of tier anything so now I just want to see how it looks on my characters. There’s something pretty special to me about just seeing it all match. I came pretty close to getting a full PVP set on my priest, but later got bored of the grind considering that there was so many heroics to learn. Basically, I’m not overly concerned about what set of tier gear it is, I just want a full set of something.

Raiding: This reason probably falls in line with some of the typical arguments, but perhaps my way of thinking about it is a bit different. From what I know, most people seem to want to get geared up in T9 so that they can jump straight to Ice Crown Citadel. As a healer, I’d rather keep running Naxx until I can comfortably heal anyone through it, and then progress to Ulduar or whatever. I haven’t had a chance to raid much at all since I began playing WoW, so I would hate to skip entire swaths of content just to get more epic gear.

Thanks for reading. Leave a comment and I should be back with another post soon.

One thing that stuck with me from the launch of WIND Mobile in Toronto this past week was that the company offers not a single straight-up oldskool handset. Even in their currently limited lineup everything they’re selling is either a touchscreen or qwerty.

And yet my recent stopover in super-futuristic Tokyo last month would suggest that numberpad devices are still very much in fashion.

Suffice to say that for me and this N86, traditional T9 text input is something that has to be tolerated for the sake of that sweet, sweet camera.

The keypad on the N86 isn’t bad, per se — far from it. While maybe not quite up to the gold standard of numberpads — that honour goes to the N95, IMHO — the keys on the N86 have similarly good travel and, critically, have a bit of space between them, as you can see here:

If you’re a whiz at T9 your thumbs will fly on the N86, but if you’re still learning like me you just need a little patience and you’ll get bw bz by.

Above the keys is a straight-up oldskool 240×320-pixel display, with one important difference. Though the resolution is the same as on almost every other Eseries and Nseries device, this one is all AMOLED up in yo’ face! That is to say, it’s an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode display…

So what? Well, see for yourself, the N86 on the left compared to my N79 on the right:

AMOLED is more efficient for better battery life, but more importantly it looks fantastic everywhere except in direct sunlight, where it’s still readable.

But behind the screen we’ve got a bit of an oldskool problem — a lack of available space for installed apps.

Here’s most of what I’ve put on my N86, plus a handy guide in case there’s something here that you don’t recognize:

Row 1: Calcium, FishText, Frozen Bubble.
Row 2: JoikuSpot, Nimbuzz, OfficeSuite.
Row 3: Opera Mini, Qik, SplashID.
Row 4: SymTorrent, UpCode, WorldMate.

None of these apps take up much space on their own, but together with the other necessary items on my default drive they’ve gobbled up over 70 of the available 78MB of flash memory there.

Don’t believe me? See for yourself…

Part of the problem is how Nokia arbitrarily splits up the internal memory on its devices into separate virtual drives. Sure, I could’ve install all my apps and more into the “mass memory” partition of the single, internal drive, but I didn’t — and now I can’t install the N-Gage client on my N86 at all.

Furthermore, why split it all up in the first place? That’s straight-up oldskool obfuscation for new users, yo… But I suppose it makes sense in this (mostly) straight-up oldskool Nokia.

If I do end up buying an N86 for myself, I’m gonna have to get me some adidas-style white stripes to lay across the back of it.

Word.

Nuance is one of the most important companies in the mobile space, yet few cell phone owners have any idea who they are. You know that T9 feature that lets you blast out texts on your number pad? That’s theirs. If your phone does text-to-voice or voice transcription, that’s probably their technology too.

Nuance’s latest move to take over the mobile world: the iPhone. While they don’t have anything on the iPhone out-of-the-box (yet), they’ve just released an App called “Dragon Dictation”, which lets you speak your texts and emails. Drunk texting just got even easier – well, as long as you’re not slurring too bad.

Here’s how it works: Launch the app, hit the record button, and speak. Once you’re done, they pass the clip through the Dragon NaturallySpeaking engine, and return the transcribed text, which you can push into an SMS, E-mail, or to your clipboard for use with any other app.

The transcription service was more accurate than I would have expected, though not perfect. My harsh Californian (read: non-existent) accent must have been tripping it up – it would nail “Blu-ray” in one sentence, and then miss it the next time. Tapping any word it got wrong presents a list of other words it thinks you may have meant. It seems to work better when you talk at a certain pace; not too fast, and not too slow. Once you find the right cadence, accuracy is pretty solid.

Whether it’s perfect or not, it’s free – for now, at least. Nuance says that the gratis pricing is “for a limited time”, which means you better grab it while it’s hot.

It’s just 1am over here, and for some insane reason I’m really sleepy. But I was messaging a friend (SMS not email) and it got me thinking. I love T9. Yea, that’s right T9 – predictive text. It’s just amazing. I’m one of those people who doesn’t like the SMS lingo, and prefers to type full words and sentences instead of abbreviations and word fragments! (Yea – the whole short part of SMSs are wasted on me!)

Anyway it got me thinking, that even though T9 is great. It’s really old and I think with the kind of phones we have now-days(processing power) implementing a couple of advancements should take up too much of the processors speed. I think. Here are some improvements which might be useful to freaks like me -

Custom Word Capitalization - When I add a custom word to my dictionary, I can choose if I always want it to be Capitalized. This would be really useful as most of the time I’m adding names of people and places.

Letter ‘I’ Capitalization - When the letter ‘i’ exists on it’s own. It gets capitalized.

Spell Checker - Sometimes I don’t know the exact spelling of a word, and when I start to type it incorrectly, my phone makes a loud beep to indicate that no such word exists. Maybe it should do a spell check on what I was typing and suggest a word. This would be kinda hard to implement.

Google Wave Spell checker suggester - A couple of months back, when I first saw the ‘Google Wave’ video what really impressed me was it’s spell checker. It automatically identified the difference between ‘been’ and ‘bean’ based on it’s usage. I think something like this could be done to make the T9 suggest words based on what you’re typing instead of the it’s conventional statistical technique.

I think the last two would be kinda tough to implement. Not to mention a waste of time. Still .. it’s nice to fantasize once in a while.

The LG Rumour cell phone is not new on the market, but it is still available for purchase. I’ve had this phone for a year now, and figured I’d provide my thoughts on its performance overall.

The LG Rumour comes in a few different colors and textures. I have a smooth green one. The best feature of the Rumour is its sliding QWERTY keyboard. When you first slide open the keyboard, you are automatically directed to the text messaging application so that you can start writing your message right away. This is very handy because it saves you time from going through the menu system to send a message.

Another neat feature of the Rumour is its capability to have a video stored as a screensaver. It re-loops your video in the background. I have an aquarium video at the moment.

Some downsides of this phone are its low quality camera, with only 1.3 megapixels and no flash like some other phones offer.

Although this phone has a full keyboard, you definitely always have to type everything out in full. The ‘guessing’ service it offers is actually annoying, the phone tries to guess what you’re going to write next, but rarely gets it right. This does not work as well as the T9 feature on non-qwerty phones.

Another downside of the LG Rumour is its low sound. I find the ringtones to be too silent, and as such I have to rely on a traditional phone ring sound so that I hear it. The phone comes with two game demos, and bad ones at that. It has an applications folder but comes with no applications.

The phone has an Mp3 player and you can change its memory card. This is also a goo feature, but unfortunately, you cannot use your own MP3s as a ringtone. You have to use the ones that cost money via download.

Overall I’m happy with my purchase because I’ve increased my text-messaging ten-fold, I find it a great way to have ’straight-to-the-point’ conversations with people, and can do so with great speed thanks to the Rumour.

I don’t know what to do about my T9 upgrades. And I’m sitting on 110 triumph emblems right now so I better decide fast! The first thing I’m going to upgrade is certainly going to be the gloves as my gloves are currently my worst item of the four. The next upgrade however is problematic due to what I am wearing:

Gloves: emblem gloves -> need upgrading!
Chest: 245 Chest of the Towering Monstrosity
Shoulders: 245 badge shoulders
Head: 226 T8.5 head
Legs: 226 T8.5 legs

After I upgrade the gloves, I’m in a bit of a pickle. Either I replace a perfectly good 245 item with a very slight upgrade (chest or shoulders), or I break my T8 set bonus (10% increased damage to Seal of Vengence). I don’t really have threat problems, but that’s a big threat loss. I love the T9 2pc set bonus so much – decreased cooldown on taunt is just so clutch – but I would rather have both bonuses, thank you very much

My cotank and I both sort of made the mistake of blowing emblems on offset shoulders. Of course, I wasn’t running near as high content back then. Now however I am clearing 25 man TOC (mostly) every week with my guild, and I have access to those trophies. And the DKP for them now.

Well, I will probably break my T8 bonus first. Or get the set shoulders. Ugh. I still can’t decide.

Consegui os seguintes: Trick or Treat!, Bring me the Head of … oh Wait!, Out with it, The savior of Hallow’s End, Roten Hallow, G.N.E.R.D Rage, Check Your Head, The Masquerade, Trick and Treats of Outland, Trick and Tread of Eastern Kingdoms, para o de Kalimdor, faltou apenas Winterspring e Feralas.

Things haven’t been terribly rosy in our little raiding corner of the world. Attendance over t

Things haven’t been terribly rosy in our little raiding corner of the world. Attendance over the past week or so has been dismal, to put it nicely, but for the most part we knew of the abscences. I’m cool with that. Some folks have gone AWOL on us, and when you’re already scraping to fill raid spots…not cool. Fortunately, a recent injection of 4-5 new members should help to alleviate the problem of 18-20 people online come raid time.

Initially, I was a fan of the new “raid”, Trial of the Crusader. But now, less than a month and a half since it was fully available, I have to say it’s one of the poorest major content releases in WoW. I know, I know…how could I possibly find a loot pinata such as ToC to be a piss poor raid? Easy. You find yourself running upwards of 4 times a week. A better design for ToC would’ve been for it to be 1 lockout, and before each fight begins, there could be a “switch” to set it to hard mode or not. Of course, this wouldn’t work with the current implementation since Blizz has decided to reward guilds/raids on how few wipes they incur (or as we found a few weeks ago, there added a new “Immortal” achievement…seriously Blizz, cmon). I, for one, would like to work more on heroic ToC, but as a guild there are still a LOT of upgrades people could use from regular ToC 25.

There there’s Trophies. I absolutely HATE the trophy drop concept. It wouldn’t be such a PITA if the badge cost for every item didn’t go up by 50% since you have to run ToC 25 just to get the trophies. Of course, each boss only drops 1. We’ve had ToC 25 on farm ever since it came out, and we are still a ways away from having everyone in at least 4 piece T9 245. Being somewhat selfless, I went ahead and filled out the rest of my T9 with the 232 pieces; despite the almost nonexistant spell power gain, I gained ~70 haste, and the T9 4 piece is sex. Now I can upgrade my pvp gear with the leftover badges at this point…heh.

On badges/emblems…I have mixed feelings about the emblem drop change coming in 3.3, where bosses/fights that drop emblems of conquest will then drop emblems of triumph. For folks with alt-itis like moi, being able to kit out alts in full T9 and/or Furious Gladiator gear is hot. On the other hand…we get to farm heroics…AGAIN…hooray! I honestly miss the days of early Wrath when the heroics were actually a reasonable challenge. Once everyone farmed Naxx for a month, though, heroics became a joke, and they’ve been a joke ever since. The hard mode “switch” concept I mentioned for ToC would be interesting to see in some heroics, although at this point I think it would be really cheesy to add that in as “extra content”.

I think it speaks volumes that when we run short of folks to run 25 mans, the overwhelming response from our guild leans toward running Ulduar 10 for hard modes and rusted proto drakes. It’s not about loot with Ulduar, although I believe most folks want in on that for the aforementioned drakes. I also think it’s due to Uld being a breath of fresh air compared to ToC, even though it’s been out for months now. Ulduar is IMO one of the best raid instances Blizzard has sent our way. There trash, but not a lot of it (anyone whining about Freya’s room needs to go back to AQ or MC…or hell, any vanilla raid). There are plenty of boss fights. Hard mode versions of most fight tend to change the dynamics of each fight enough to where it’s the same, yet different; ToC heroics mostly boil down to LOL I HIT HARDER N HAV MOAR HP LOL.

ToC could’ve been tuned for guilds as a extra raid to run parallel along with Ulduar, rather than a higher tier raid. It would make more sense that way so that you wouldn’t have folks loading up on 245 gear only to go back to Uld and roflstomp most all of the hard modes there. Not only that, but then they could have the faction-oriented T9 sets as part of the Icecrown Citadel raid, since there’s going to be a heated battle between the two factions there.

Hopefully Icecrown Citadel will blow our proverbial socks off. I will be happy to tackle a real raid as progression content once again.

As any avid texter knows, most cell phones sport what’s called a “T9,” or Predictive Text, function. It’s an algorithm that reads your key presses on a 10-digit keypad and, based on English usage statistics, suggests the word you’re attempting to spell. Without T9, it’d take 10 minutes just to ask someone if they’d found a parking spot yet.

Unfortunately, T9 is only as good as the dictionary it uses. You have to add to the dictionary as time goes by using manual input. It’s as if T9 starts with a default personality, and you have to beat and cajole it into reflecting your own. If my phone’s default T9 were a person, it would be a sexually repressed Protestant plumber with a 9th grade education. What’s often just as funny as the words T9 doesn’t know are the words it thinks I want to spell, which only occasionally bear resemblance to English as spoken in our quadrant of the galaxy.

Here’s just a sample of the words my phone insists don’t belong in my vocabulary:

discombobulated. I get as far as “discombo,” and it throws up its hands. At least it didn’t bring up a dialog that said, “Use simpler words, you ostentatious dipshit.”

ostentatious.

dipshit.

aphrodisiac. What, you never text about Spanish Fly? Suuuuure.

fucking. This is unacceptable. Given that this is the number one activity coordinated by text message, you’d figure you could at least spell it out. It’s like a TV soap opera: everybody’s fucking, and talking about fucking, but no one’s allowed to say it. I almost went ahead and accepted the phone’s suggestion of “ducking,” thinking I might spark a trend. “Duck that ducking motherducker!” Then I realized that this sounded like Pulp Fiction edited for The Hallmark Channel, and gave up my dream.

cocksucker. George Carlin would have something to say about this.

tiananmen. Damn you, Communist China.

meningitis. When the mother of your children might have it, you’ll wish your phone could spell it.

starbucks. Haven’t decided if this is a bug or a feature.

dismember. The phone suggested “disnences” and “disnencer”; both are forms of the French disnence, meaning “to vomit wildly in every direction.”

eviscerate. It was a bad week, okay?

rumbly.

tumbly. My phone hates A.A. Milne.

moppet. And so it emerges: the authors of the T9 algorithm were childless.

vajayjay. And gay.

tittilating. Suggestion was “vittilating,” which apparently means something in the Martian English dialect used by my phone.

Now that patch 3.2 has been out for three weeks, everyone should have been able to stock up on some

Now that patch 3.2 has been out for three weeks, everyone should have been able to stock up on some Emblems of Triumph. This is true even if you don’t raid – the Heroic Daily quest given by Archmage Lan’dalock in Dalaran rewards 2 Emblems of Triumph (since patch 3.2) as well as the gold. This means that, even if you’ve never stepped foot in to the Trial of the Crusader 10- or 25-man raids, you could have gained up to 56 Emblems of Triumph.

But now that you have all of these emblems piling up in your bags, what gear can you buy with them that will benefit you as a Moonkin? This list will cover the ilevel 245 gear sold by the vendors Magistrix Vesara and Magistix Iruvia, or Arcanist Miluria and Arcanist Asarina (Horde and Alliance respectively).

Note: Some of the names vary slightly between so I have only listed the Horde versions. The Alliance versions have the same stats, but may have a different prefix. (e.g. Mauldrons of Catastrophic Emanation/Pauldrons of Catastrophic Emanation)

Idol – 25 Emblems

Idol of Lunar Fury
Equip: Each time your Moonfire spell deals periodic damage, you have a chance to gain 200 critical strike rating for 12 sec.

Total Cost:

Assuming you buy both rings and one of each item for the other slots , the total cost of this will be 215 Emblems of Triumph. If you don’t plan on raiding at all, the quickest time you could do it, assuming you do the heroic daily every day (including the days when it’s H Oculus) is 153 days.

Which item to choose?

The itemisation of the slots (excluding the idol) is generally the same, here’s one possible approach to choosing which item would best benefit you:
The first thing you should look at with all items is your hit rating. If it’s under the cap (262 with Balance of Power and Imp. FF), then you should go for the item with hit. If you’re at or over the hit cap, look at your haste rating. If it’s under 400, go for the item with haste rating. If it’s over 400, go for the item with crit rating. (Don’t forget to take in to account the stats of the gear you will be replacing!) Whether the gear is cloth or leather shouldn’t matter, unless you plan on over-aggroing and getting beat on by the mobs, which is generally a bad idea.

Also, don’t forget that you’ll generally want to socket 2 sockets with a Purified/Glowing Dreadstone for your Meta gem (which should be a Chaotic Skyflare Diamond). Put these in the blue sockets with the best set bonuses, usually the ones with spellpower.

Tier Gear:

Alternatively, if you want access to cheaper, lower ilevel gear (but with set bonuses), you can go purchase the 10-man T9 set from Aspirant Naradiel/Aspirant Forudir at the Argent Tournament. This gear is ilevel 232, compared to the aforementioned ilevel 245 gear. the cost for each of this gear is:

Malfurion’s/Runetotem’s Cover of Conquest – 50 Emblems of Triumph
