Here’s the tablecloth I’ve made for my mother-in-law. I delivered it this morning and she was very pleased with it, and put it on her table straight away. The photo’s don’t do it justice. The table is in a small bay, and catches the light, brightening the room.

The cloth is 54″ square, six by six blocks of 9″ log cabin. Just thought – I haven’t got a photo of the backing material, it matched perfectly, small lilac flowers on a yellow background. I used the backing fabric to bind aswell. The quilitng we kept fairly simple, sitched in the ditch between the main blocks, and then using varigated thread, straight stitching horizontal and vertical over the logs. The centre squares we left unquilted.

In case you didn’t know, I spend a lot of time online. I love the internet. It is my best friend who rarely gives me any lip and only sometimes needs an ass whooping.

Let me share with you some fun finds I’ve encountered thus far this week. Don’t be mistaken; the really really good stuff I keep to my self.

Alicia Silverstone. I would rather go naked than not love her. She has that new cookbook out, The Kind Diet, which actually looks kinda good. Oh how I would love to buy me some cookbooks, but, you know, the economy.

Here is a recipe from Alicia’s cookbook for Kind Brownies. No eggs. No dairy. No worries. Alicia’s got you covered. If anyone out there tries this recipe before I get to it, please let me know how much or how little you love-like it.

Despite the meatiness of this blog, I really want to try out these decadent vegan bars now that I have a killjoy friend who no longer walks on the dairy dark side with me. I’ve tried, but I am a total vegan failure. At least these bars will get me through the dessert course.

Reposting from The Way the Cookie Crumbles:

Cookie Crumble's Shot

Directions

To make bottom layer: Grease a 9-inch square cake pan. (Marika recommends lining the bottom with parchment that stuck out the top so you can lift everything out after). In a small bowl, beat flax meal and water together until frothy, set aside. In a sauce pan over low heat, combine 1/2 cup earth balance, sugar, cocoa, and vanilla . Add flax mixture and stir constantly until mixture thickens. Add graham crackers crumbs, coconut, and chopped nuts, stirring to combine. Press the mixture into the greased pan.

To make middle layer: In a large bowl, beat together 1/4 cup earth balance, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla custard powder, and soy milk until creamy. Spread custard mixture over graham cracker base in pan. Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour.

To make top layer: Melt semi-sweet chocolate and 1 tbsp earth balance. Pour over chilled bars and spread over top. Return to refrigerator to chill until firm (at least 1 hour).

Thank you to Cookie for this tempting treat!

Other news around the internet town: Apartment Therapy has 25 Vegetarian and Vegan Meals up as part of their “Best of 2009″ re-cap. Let me know if you’ve tried any of the recipes.

Jonathan Safran Foer continues to baffle me. For one, he looks too much like my friend, Jayadeva. Just see:

J S Foer

Jayadeva

The resemblance is ridiculous, isn’t it? So, does this mean that I think my friend Jayadeva is hot since I think Jonathan is hot? And why do both their names begin with the letter ‘J.’ Maybe they are….the same person! See, freaking me out.

Oh, but I think Jon Jon is hot because of his BRAINS, despite the stupid liberal vegetarian crap he pulls like saying his son will one day come home having eaten a hot dog at a birthday party because hot dogs are so tempting and delicious. And now goes public about how politically correct he is in his choice of restaurants. He is a media darling, the Naomi Wolf of vegetarians. Instead of putting his money in the register of strictly veg establishments, Foer likes to nosh his way around Brooklyn eating vegetarian selections at meat restaurants!!! So sayeth the Vegetarian Star.

Oh, Jonathan, say it isn’t so! Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan. What am I going to do with you? I voted you into office because I thought you were really going to make some radical changes. You represented youthfulness. Your wife sometimes wears J.Crew, which is still out of my price range but is remarkably plebeian.

Oh wait, that’s a different disappointing public figure who I can’t stop but loving, despite the disappointment of his true moderate stance. These men just seem to have a hold on me…

In more local and personal news, I am getting ready to turn 35. Saturday I will have a small birthday party (yes, I am throwing my own party) and went out shopping today for stuff. As part of my New Year’s resolution, I am striving to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. No, just joking, although that isn’t a bad thing to do. I just can’t have a rhyme as my New Year’s resolution.

I want to be satisfied; to be happy in the present. So what if my kitchen sucks and my dining room looks worse than a school cafeteria. I am having my birthday party and I am having it with chairs (many of which will be of the folding variety) and tables and tablecloths.

Despite the fact the everyone I invited has kids and that we are not the most formal of folk, my desire for my birthday is to feed the kids, send them away to destroy the nether regions of my house and then sit with some friends at tables (as opposed to grabbing a spot on the floor) and eating in relative peace.

Will I be able to pull it off? Probably not completely. But as long as I endeavor to have all the pieces in place, I am resigned to whatever manifests in actuality. Well, everything except friends showing up without RSVP’ing. That just won’t work.

I hit Urban Threads on 13th today, hoping to find a tablecloth or two for the party. The actual tablecloths were well out of my price range, however, I did score a window panel and a cloth shower curtain which are sized within reason for my tables.

Here’s my finds:

Urban Outfitters window panel-cum-tablecloth

Urban Outfitters cloth shower curtain repurposed as table cloth.

Now to start working on getting my house in order to cook. See you soon!

I promised to post what I have been working on, so here they are. This is the project that I was working on several nights last week. I was in a hurry, as I needed these done for our family Christmas party on Saturday. I think they turned out pretty good. It gets a little easier each time I make these panels, however it does take about 6 yards of fabric for the curtain panels and about 2 yards of fabric for the tablecloth. I guess the real key to saving money when you are sewing is to always look and buy fabric when it is on sale, and never never buy Christmas fabric the first few months of fall.

I have a few more projects that I am working on as gifts, so I can’t post them here yet, but just as soon as I can I promise I will. It was almost a year ago that the sewing bug bit me for the very first time, and it has only been about 6 months since I got my beloved machine, so I am quite happy at my pace and should be ready to tackle that first quilt soon. . I know DD is sure hoping I get moving on it so it is ready for her to take to college in the fall. Where or where does the precious time go? Just yesterday. . .ahhh well, “this is the day that the Lord has made, I WILL rejoice and be glad in it!” Here is a quick look at the pattern I think I will try doing for her, she absolutely loves black and yellow, so this design by Heidi Pridemore for Timeless Treasures may be just the ticket. . .

Because I deleted all my Electric Quilt project files, and had not backed up the more recent ones I have created a new project file using the same layout as the My Christmas Aunt series, but with different blocks to fill some places between now and Christmas Day.

I my never humble opinion it is not working as well as My Christmas Aunt, so perhaps I should look for some of the blocks I used in that series and try again sometime.

In the meantime here is something I prepared earlier ….. in one of the files I did back up!

In Tabarani Hadrat Ibn Abbas radiallahu anhuma reports that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam prohibited us to blow in water and food (to cool it and one should rather wait for the food to naturally cool).

In Sahih Muslim, Hadrat Jabir radiallahu anhu relates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam said “Shaytan is ever present in all you attempt. At the time you eat, he is there too. Therefore, if a morsel falls down and something attaches to it, clean it off and eat it and do not leave it for Shaytan and when you have completed your meal, lick your fingers because one never knows which part of the meal contains the barakah.”

Ibn Maajah reports from Hadrat Hasan Basri rahmatullahi alayhe who relates that Hadrat Mu’qil ibn Yasaar radiallahu anhu was eating when a morsel fell from his hand. He picked it up, cleaned and ate the morsel. On seeing this, the unlearned around him indicated with their eyes to each other (that his action was lowly and disliked). Someone said “May Allah do good for my Commander…”, Hadrat Mu’qil ibn Yasaar radiallahu anhu was in the position of a Commander and Chief among them, “…these unlearned people are indicating to each other that you have picked up a fallen morsel despite there being plenty of food in front of you.” He replied, “I cannot leave that which I have heard from my Beloved Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam because of these ‘Ajamis (non-Arabs). We were commanded that if a morsel were to fall that we should clean it and eat it and not leave it for Shaytan.”

Ibn Maajah reports that the Mother of the Believers Hadrat ‘Aisha radiallahu anha relates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam entered his home and found a piece of bread on the floor. He sallallahu alayhe wasallam picked it up, cleaned it and ate it then said “O ‘Aisha, honor good things because once this leaves a nation, it never returns.” meaning that rizq (sustenance) does not return to a nation of ingrates.

Tabarani reports from Hadrat ‘Abdullah ibn Umm Haraam radiallahu anhu relates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam said “Honor bread as it is from the barakaat (blessings) of the sky and the Earth. The one who eats the fallen food of the tablecloth (traditionally spread on the floor where people eat) will have his sins forgiven.”

Thanksgiving Day! It appears that dad is guarding the pies. I think he’s actually regarding them though.

I used to bake up to a dozen pumpkin pies made from real pumpkins, plus apple and pecan too. I was 25 years younger. This year, 3 1/2 pies, an all time low.

My favorite Thanksgiving Day tradition is making pie crusts with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on in the background. There is a comforting delicate sameness to the process that takes me outside of time and into the company of my pie baking grandmothers. I always look forward to that.

A water-repellent tablecloth

A regular tablecloth

A misting/spray bottle filled with water (or any other way of sprinkling water onto the tablecloth)

The Script

Storyteller: (holds up the regular tablecloth and the misting bottle) In my hands I’ve got a spray bottle filled with water and a table cloth. Now watch carefully and tell me what happens when I spray the cloth. (spray cloth, let kids answer to the effect of “it gets wet”)

Storyteller: Yeah, all the water just gets soaked up into it and it gets soggy doesn’t it? Let’s try it again with a different tablecloth, and tell me what happens this time. (spray the water repellent tablecloth, let the kids say what happens) Yeah, it doesn’t really soak in, as a matter of fact if I shake the tablecloth (shake the tablecloth, the water will shake off leaving it dry and possibly getting some kids sprinkled in good fun) it’s completely dry.

Storyteller: This reminds me of something that Paul said in the Bible. He said that he knew what it was to be rich or poor, or to be hungry or well fed, but he could do all things through Christ who gives him strength. Sometimes, bad things come at us like the water in the bottle and it’s easy to think that we won’t be able to make it, but with Christ in our hearts, we can be like this tablecloth (hold up the dry tablecloth). We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength

seeing as i just went to home goods to try to find a thanksgiving centerpiece, and all they had were santas and reindeer (not a turkey in sight!), i think i might just put those scissors skills of mine to good use and make a table runner to complement my tablecloth. i got inspired yesterday when i was at a really cute store in berkeley called “castles in the sky” and they had these gorgeous reams of italian wrapping paper. got me thinking about creating a table runner with wrapping paper and ribbon. so, today i’m heading to the container store (which has the BEST wrapping paper around, in my opinion) and starting my creation. my thinking is a long runner and then i’ll cut holes along both sides with a hole punch and then run grosgrain ribbon through them like laces…wish me luck! i’ll post updates…

Today is week 1 of the Dare to DIY Party at Kim’s. I decided to keep things simple for my Than

Today is week 1 of the Dare to DIY Party at Kim’s.

I decided to keep things simple for my Thanksgiving DIY project. We don’t have many decorations for holidays other than Christmas, and I’m okay with that. I prefer decor items that are multipurpose, functional, and simple. So I kept my focus on Fall items that I can enjoy all season each year. So, what did I come up with?

I decided to sew some nice linens for our Thanksgiving dinner. Since our dining room is small, our table only seats 6 with the leaf. In order to seat 8 for dinner, we have a second table, which I use as a craft table in my sewing room (as pictured below), that gets moved for dinners. Because our second table is from Ikea and isn’t as pretty, I prefer to cover it up. So, I decided to make a tablecloth for our Ikea table, and place mats for our regular dining room table (also, our regular table is just big enough that 56″ wide home decor fabric wasn’t quite big enough to make a nice tablecloth). This worked perfect as we can use the place mats all year too.

I bought 3.5 yards of the tablecloth fabric which was enough to make the tablecloth as well as 8 place mats. This fabric was on sale for $6 a yard! I also bought 2 yards of the plaid to make a set of 12 napkins. At $3 a yard it was a steal! Total, I spent about $30 on fabric and thread for make everything.

I shopped around and found that a set of napkins easily costs $15 and a tablecloth alone is $25-30. So, I’d say I made a great set of linens for a good price.

In case you’re wondering, the place mat shown above isn’t hemmed yet. I didn’t anticipate quite how long all the ironing and sewing would take and I’m not quite done. I’ve just got to hem all the placements before next week.

Lastly, I’m trying to make a couple items for a centerpiece. I’m inspired by Jane’s Wire Pumpkin Project. So far, I’ve bought the wire. I have hopes of making something today. I thought I’d start with a pumpkin or two and then wonder if I can create a wire cornucopia. Wish me luck.

Don’t forget to check out all the awesome DIY projects at the Party through the list of links on Newlywoodward.

Tablecloth or wedding gown? Because the name of Mojuba’s game is Disaster Aversion, we like to make

Tablecloth or wedding gown?

Because the name of Mojuba’s game is Disaster Aversion, we like to make sure we know how to solve any potential wedding catastrophe. So, while doing some intense disaster research in the scientific reference book The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Weddings, I happened upon a useful piece on how to make your own dress — in case your luggage gets lost on the trip to Destination Wedding: Hawaii.

How To Survive If The Bride’s Gown Is Lost:

Make a dress from a tablecloth!

Remove a white tablecloth from the table and cut a hole in the middle.

Drop it over your head

Cut two more holes for your arms

Cut around the entire hem of the tablecloth to produce a sash. Tie this around your waist.

Voila!

Lucky for you, our wedding day survival kit for the ladies, Bride Mojuba, includes handy scissors for your to cut your own dress with, and even pre-threaded needles with five different thread colors (in case you want to do some last-minute embroidery on your new gown).

Disaster averted!

Today’s “Vintage Monday” piece has seen a lot of use: It was my grandmother’

Today’s “Vintage Monday” piece has seen a lot of use:

It was my grandmother’s. I don’t know how old it is, but you can tell from the patches that it saw a lot of use. I think I remember seeing it on the occasional holiday covering the “kid’s table”.

There are places that I will need to patch if i want to do anything with it. I’m trying to decide if I want to embroider on it – would that be sacrilege to do so? It’s very tempting to applique some flowers on those patches, and have flower patches on the top. Would that be too much?

Should I just enjoy the worn-in love of this piece? I do think there’s a certain beauty in those patches – I think my grandparents’ generation was one of a last to not have a “take and toss” attitude about items. If it worked, you used it. If it didn’t work, you patched it. You didn’t waste. Maybe I’ve romanticized it a little, but I think there’s a beauty in that attitude.

Do you have anything “worn-with-love”?

A simple and very retro tablecloth idea. For about $10 you can get a natural color canvas drop cloth here. Lay the cloth flat and run a strip of 1/4 – 1/2 inch grout or painters tape down the fabric. You can do stripes all the way through, a few on one end, or even criss cross. The sky’s the limit on imagination here. Then spread some red or blue (or any color!) fabric paint through the non-taped areas to create the pattern. The paint will bring up the natural weave of the canvas; the more layers the darker the design.

i could literally have taken a roll of glamor shots of these hankies from my swap partner, maryellen. they are heaven, and i just love them. a shot of them yesterday on the line that does not do them justice, but i can’t get a better.

and there’s more. a stack of autumn-y prints that i have an idea for, a big bunch of ric rac i am dying to use, all atop this sweet swedish tablecloth that reminds us of our favorite swedish diner in chicago, svea. we will have many a brunch upon it.

here is a mess of most excellent buttons, resting on hankies amid the massive piles of embroidery floss she sent (most of it is not pictured. seriously massive.).

more fabric. i’m thinking these may become bags? though i do often end up using things for their intended purpose like that tablecloth up there. and those cowboy ranch curtains are purty sweet.

it’s a bit embarrassing for me to be showing off like this. really, that’s more good fortune than any one person could hope for. and then i ended up at a nearby estate sale and…

So turkey day is fast approaching and, if you are anything like me, there is lots to do before now a

So turkey day is fast approaching and, if you are anything like me, there is lots
to do before now and then. So where is the time for creativity?

Good question.

But I have a good answer:

All that pent up holiday energy your kids have + the time they have to wait while
the turkey is cooking = an opportunity to get the kids creative AND keep them
out from underfoot while dinner is cooking.

All you need is an old sheet (washed, of course) and some crayons (again, I am
going to recommend Stockmar’s Beeswax Crayons, but that is only because I
love them and because I know that they work fabulously on fabric).

Throw the sheet on the table and give your kids a chance to colour the
Thanksgiving tablecloth! This is a really neat heirloom project because if you
heat set the crayons (after Thanksgiving when you have more time, of course)
then you can bring this same tablecloth out again next year, and the kids can
add something to their work of art again (and again the next year, and the next.
..) This can be a free-form colouring project, or there are lots of free printable
Thanksgiving colouring pages on the internet (like here or here). As long as you
are using a light coloured sheet to colour on, just lay the printable colouring
page under the sheet and trace the lines onto your colouring surface with a
Sharpie or some other felt tip marker.

And…if you are worried about spilling gravy on the newly coloured work of art,
just use a clear plastic tablecloth (or trim the tabs off a clear plastic shower
curtain) to protect the drawing.

Or – if you are looking for something a little more interesting or different than
colouring on fabric, and the kids are older, grab some tissue paper and have
the kids colour their thanksgiving pictures on the paper (the reason that the kids
have to be older is that tissue paper can tear with pressure, so the kids need to
be able to handle this possibility). Once their pictures are all drawn, use some
of that homemade miracle glue (the recipe is here) to paste the pictures face up
against a plastic tablecloth for a funky frosted/stained glass/art style
tablecloth. If you have a piece of tempered glass, this same technique can be
used to make a gorgeous hot plate to set your turkey on!

What a great way to experience creativity as a family this turkey day
