I haven’t used Opera in a long time. Last time I launched Opera from my desktop was probably around this time last year. It appears that Opera has released a new version. Opera 10. When I first heard of the release I didn’t really expect to see much, I dismissed it foolishly thinking that there would be not much to it other than a few new aesthetics and things like that. During the time of the release I was jam packed with uni work so I really did not get to check it out. So thanks to Stan Schroeder’s post on Mashable I realised I was so .. soooo wrong.

Google Chrome warned me about the Opera installation file being hazardous to my pc when I began downloading the installation file from the Opera website. I decided to ignore that message just this one time and went ahead with the installation.

Launching Opera 10 for the first time, I realised that its much more than it used to be. I remember Opera being a really fast, lightweight browser. But it turns out that Opera 10, whilst still retaining those characteristics, is loaded with loads of new features. Clicky Clicky for the full list of new features.

The new Unite features give you the ability to share your documents, stream music & movies, host websites and chat on your computer straight from the browser. Opera automatically searches for other computers with Opera installed and lets you share these files among them. This is really handy if you want to quickly set up “Homegroup”-like sharing in your network, and yes it works regardless of the OS the computer is running. Unite also lets you dedicate a folder to which other people can upload content to. Of course you have the option to put a password protect the application so that only people you authorize can use this feature.

So far I haven’t had any problems with it. Unlike Chrome, Opera doesn’t seem to slow down my crappy lappy even though i have a gazilion tabs open. Speaking of tabs, hovering over the tab will give you a thumbnail of the tab, much like aero in Windows 7. Also when your copy of Opera is up and running, from the bottom of the toolbar click and drag the tabs toolbar downward from the to see what happens. Thumbs up Opera!

Most of you may or may not know about this cool little function in Google Chrome that lets you create shortcuts to websites and places them on your desktop, start menu & taskbar. I will show you how to use this function in  Windows 7 using the superbar and Launchy.

First fire up Google Chrome and navigate to the site you wish to create a shortcut for. On the top right corner of the Chrome browser click on the icon next to the little spanner.

Now  click on “Create application shortcuts..” and you will see this:

Chrome gives you the option to create this shortcut on your Desktop, Start menu & Taskbar. Make sure you check start menu, and taskbar. If the icon dosent appear in the taskbar repeat the steps and pick desktop, drag and drop the icon/s onto the task bar. As you can see I’ve decided to create shortcuts for Gmail, Twitter and WordPress.

Here is where the new taskbar features come in. Lets say I am working on Word and I want to open up my twitter webpage and check my mail. Do i open up Chrome, navigate to gmail, open a new tab and sign into twitter? Nope i can hit the Windows key + 3 and Windows key + 4 to open up Twitter and Gmail. For those of you don’t know you can fire up the applications on your taskbar by hitting the Windows key + 1,2 3… depending on their position starting from the left.

Ok so thats one way. For those of you that read my previous post about GnomeDo and Launchy there is another way.

Bring up Launchy by hitting alt+space bar, now right click on Launchy and select rebuild catalog:

Give Launchy a few moments to index the newly created shortcuts and then away you go. Type in gmail and you should see this:

Same can be done to bring up any other shortcuts you’ve made, but make sure the catalog is rebuilt after adding new shortcuts.

So thats it. You now have two new ways of opening your favorite sites with ease.

One thing you cant do, unfortunately, is to convert the Chrome windows into tabs or pull up the address bar and navigate to other sites unless you follow links on the webpage you are currently viewing. Apart from that this little feature is extremely useful!

Browser tabs are a great idea. You can open various sites at the same time and flick between them. You can save the lot and have them load up next time you browse the net. This is useful until there are so many tabs it takes time to scroll from one to the other.  This is a problem for me these days as I don’t get to surf the net to the extent that I might like.

Here’s a sampling of what’s tabbed at the moment –

• Gmail – permanently tabbed
• Bloglines reader – permanently tabbed
• http://www.digitalmarketingschool.ie/ – interesting vids for internet marketers
• http://www.cearta.ie/ – a law blog. I’ve no idea what linked me into this, looks interesting though and again has me wondering how some people have so much time for blogging. I’m jealous.
• http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8356572.stm what exactly is, and is not, high quality?  An electronic marking tool has decided that some iconic literary works are not quite so good. Computer semantics is making progress but not isn’t there as yet.
• http://www.allbusiness.com/education-training/education-systems-institutions/11683312-1.html Really interesting piece about what post-graduate business courses should be like. The MBA needs an update. Is an MBA about the content or the piece of paper?
• http://www.futureinternet.ie/FutureInternet/about-us.php – a forum to debate how Ireland can best take advantage of the internet while incorporating the required values of “Liberty, Democracy and Privacy” and providing the necessary “Trust, Security and Dependability”.
• http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1116/education.html – money is in short supply, but “every classroom in the country will get a teaching laptop and a digital projector within the next three years as part of a €150m initiative”. Further down there is a comment of ‘too little’ from school principals.
• http://en.wordpress.com/tag/phds/ – exactly what it says on the tin; a collection of WordPress blogs about phds. Is it my imagination or is there a core of negativity running through a lot of these?
• http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8362328.stm – an electronic reading device from Intel to help visually impaired and dyslexics to get around the problems of the printed word. Downside; it sells for a four-figure sum.
• http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8367283.stm – students stressing out about school to such an extent their stress levels puts them on a phobic level. This is a real problem for both parents and pupils.
• http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8369111.stm – apparently parents are not tuned into the web surfing habits of their offspring. Said offspring are not immune to lying about their age to acquire access to social networking sites. My view is that if the little ones are being this street smart the parents should adopt the “if you can’t beat them then join them” approach – sit down with the children and engage with them, discussing what websites are really all about.
• http://www.independent.ie/education/latest-news/it-lecturers-only-spend-16-hours-teaching-a-week-1949444.html – when I read headlines like this I have to fight to urge to get in touch with the author and offer to swap jobs with him/her for a week. Let me tell you about my 50-hour work week………..

Auf einem meiner Lieblingsblogs (BasicThinking) ist ein sehr interessanter Bericht zu dem neuen Betriebssystem Google Chrome OS erschienen. Mit dem Betriebssystem möchte Google groß in den Markt einsteigen und den Trend Cloud Computing, also dem Speichern und Ausführen von Anwendungen/Daten direkt von Servern und nicht mehr vom eigenen Computer (toller aktueller Bericht auch hier zu finden), endlich sinnvoll einsetzen. Auch Microsoft hat nach langer Zeit den Trend endlich erkannt und möchte lt. Spiegel Berichten mit Windows Azure bald groß einsteigen. Dabei setzt Chrome OS auf das Design vom Google Browser und arbeitet viel mit Tabs und Overlays (Fenster die vor dem Browser stehen). Mal sehen wie sich das bei den Games so weiterentwickelt, kleinere grafisch nicht so anspruchsvolle Spiele lassen sich, wie auf dem Video (ab Minute 5:50) zu sehen ist, problemlos starten.

Spiele die viel Speicherplatz benötigen, werden sicherlich anfangs nicht per Chrome OS bzw. per Cloud Computing spielbar sein. Dafür sind die Bandbreiten noch zu klein. Vorgesehen ist das Betriebssystem eigentlich für den Netbook Markt, man kann sich aber fast nicht vorstellen dass es dabei bleiben wird.

Update 1#MetalGear#: Einen (wahrscheinlich) schönen Bezug gibt es in einer der Chrome OS Präsentationen bezüglich Metal Gear Solid. Big Boss ist eine Figur aus dem Metal Gear Universum. Hi everyone, I’m playing catch up again.  I don’t know if things will ever slow down!  Maybe after the New Year!  Sad we have to wait so long!  Anyways,  I thought I’d share a little of what has been going on around here.  Jonathan had his band clinic last weekend.  He did great!  I was soo proud, wanted to bawl my eyes out.  He’s just growing up way to fast!  I wasn’t allowed to take pictures in the concert hall, but I’ll post a link to where you can visit the photog site.  http://jackcleary2.com/site/#/gallery/symphonic-band/  Now, let’s just see how many of you can actually find him in all those kids.  

Tabs birthday was on Friday, I had a wonderful post in my head and never did get around to posting it.  Maybe later!  I do want to share some pictures.  Oh, what a good time this little one had with her cake!  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one that had so much fun!  I wish I had taken the cake out of the box so you could see it better.  It was such a cute cake.

wrong, so I figured out the right way to play them and then just figured out
the rest of the song.  And the solo is right but is missing a tiny bit
because in the song, there are 3 guitars playing, but I arranged it for 2.
