Vom Ferienaufenthalt auf der Farm ihres Großonkels erwarten sich Tyler und Lucinda vor allem Langeweile. Als sie von ihrem Großonkel ein Buch über „Haltung und Fütterung von Kühen“ geschenkt bekommen, in dem von feuerspeienden Kühen die Rede ist, werden sie stutzig. Und schon bald lüften die Geschwister eines der Geheimnisse der „ganz normalen“ Farm. Doch es gibt noch ein größeres Geheimnis.
Wenn man ahnt, dass es noch dieses zweites Geheimnis gibt, wird es langsam spannend. Bis dahin lies es sich zwar lesen, aber besonders fesseln konnte es mich nicht. Es passierte einfach nicht viel. Die Kinder kommen zur Farm, besichtigen die Tiere. Das es keine gewöhnlichen Tiere sind, konnte man sich ja schon vom Titel her denken. Auch wenn ich kein Problem mit Fantasy-Gestalten habe, bin ich nicht so von ihnen fasziniert, dass ihre Erwähnung oder Beschreibung reicht, um Begeisterungsstürme bei mir auszulösen. Da fand ich Colin, den einzigen Jugendlichen (außer den Geschwistern) auf der Farm, faszinierender. Ich wusste nie so richtig, was ich von ihm halten sollte. Die meiste Zeit über war er eher der „Böse,“ andererseits wusste ich teilweise nicht, ob ich Mitleid mit ihm haben sollte. Sollte ich mir wünschen, dass er weiter so bleibt, wie er ist, weitere Komplikationen verursacht und von den „Guten“ besiegt wird oder sollte ich mir wünschen, dass er sich doch zu einem „Guten“ wandelt? Um das mal so flach auszudrücken.

Der zweite Teil des Buches war auf alle Fälle spannend. Und ich bin schon ein bisschen neugierig, wie es weiter geht. Aber ich werde nicht beim Erscheinen des nächsten Bandes Schlage stehen, sondern warten bis er mir mal zufällig in die Hand fällt.

Als er seinen Rucksack schulterte und aus dem Zimmer trat, hoffte er, dass er wenigstens ein bisschen wie Indiana Jones aussah und nicht bloß wie ein verheulter kleiner Junge, der von zu Hause weglief, um von nun an unter dem Gartentisch zu wohnen.

Well, work on the book has slowed to a crawl the past two weeks because of various school and life-related crises. We also had a death in the family, one that we were prepared for, but one that also socked me in the gut in ways I did not expect. Getting back on schedule and back on track has been a challenge, and one I have not been dealing with very well in a variety of ways. And we’re also trying to deal with a major decision that must be made soon, and throw in some financial stress for the win!

So yeah. The world is tumbling now, it seems. It will, hopefully, find it’s balance soon. Or I will, at least.

Somewhere in all of this, I got the craving to read my old favorite book (series actually), and pulled it out of its box in the garage. It’s my copy of Tad William’s The Dragonbone Chair, and it has been a struggle to read.

Not a struggle to read the content. I am reminded of why I fell in love with Tad Williams, and the world of Osten Ard and the character of Simon Mooncalf/Pilgrim/Snowlock/that would be telling. The language, the descriptions, the warm embrace of his sentences and his lyricism, it’s been a real comfort in a difficult time.

But It’s been difficult to read because it is my original copy. I owe my ADHD/lack of details affliction for my introduction to this book. Back in the day, I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club, and that was in the time when you had to send back those postcards or they would send you the book selection of the month, along with the bill (it may still be that way, I dunno, and I was 15 and a flake. I was going to send it back, but accidentally opened it up and read the first page, and this sentence grabbed me:

“It might have been the first day of Spring, , to judge from the air of breathless anticipation, but the calendar in Doctor Morgenes’ cluttered chamber showed differently: The Month was only Novander. Autumn was holding the door; winter was trudging in.”

That was it. And this was the book that rekindled my own desire to write. I wanted to create powerful moments for readers, like Williams did for me, and it was from that moment on, inspired to go into my room and start writing my bizarre little stories, that I really thought of myself as a writer.

This book, over 20 years old now, was a book club “hardcover.” Not meant to last the ages, and it has been much-reread and loaned out. Pages are falling out, its binding has collapsed and its faux-cardboard cover is useful merely as a folder in which to hold to collection of leaves. It goes without saying that the dustjacket has long since vanished into the ether. But i find that though I could go down to Barnes and Noble and pick up a new paperback, I want to read this one. It connects me to that part of me that is still important, and which I forget exists sometimes. I like holding the same thing that fifteen-year-old did, the one I have spent so many years despising, mocking, but for whom I have recently started to develop a tiny bit of affection. We are communicating with each other again through this physical object.

But maybe I’ll get a new copy if I decide to keep loaning this book out …. it’s already responsible for the existence of about a dozen Tad Williams’ fans, and it deserves its rest.

The books are set on the continent of Osten Ard, whose inhabitants include Sithi (elf-like immortals), Qanuc (troll-like mountain-dwellers), and other races, as well as several distinct human nations. The youthful conquests of King John the Presbyter (also called Prester John) united most of the human world into a single realm, but by the beginning of the first book, the former conqueror is too old and feeble to stop his sons from quarrelling. As the conflict widens throughout their world and beyond, a young orphan struggles to understand enough of it to survive.

The world and story draw upon many sources from history and folklore. Several characters’ elements and experiences mirror the legends of Great Britain and other lands (e.g., King Arthur and Sir Lancelot, Alfred the Great, Baba Yaga, and Amaterasu). The dominant Erkynlanders resemble the medieval English, with Anglo-Saxon/Biblical-sounding personal names in addition to the usual castle-based feudal/agrarian setting of stock fantasy. The other peoples of Osten Ard also have identifiable real-world parallels in their names, cultures, and native tongues:

• Hernystiri: Ireland/Scotland/Wales
• Rimmersmen: Vikings and early Germanic cultures
• Nabbanai: Ancient Romans, medieval Byzantines, and Renaissance Italy
• Thrithings: Horse nomads of the Steppe such as the Magyars, Kipchaks, and Mongols
• Qanuc: Inuit
• Wrannamen: Indigenous peoples of Africa/Australia/Asia/Americas
• Sithi/Norns: Japan

Also, despite lingering polytheistic echoes of Germanic and Celtic mythology, the main human religion is a reinvented fantasy version of Christianity mixed with Norse mythology whose primary figure, Usires Aedon, was executed by being nailed upside-down to a tree, reminiscent of the crucifixion of Christ and Odin being tied to the world tree.

Tad Williams’ Otherland series is set in the late 21st century, where technology has significantly progressed, and people are able to “connect” into the Net and experience a virtual reality. The series start off when a boy falls into a coma while on the Net, and his sister discovers that he can’t unplug himself and exit the Net.

The first Marchlands kingdom, Southmarch (commonly called “Shadowmarch”), lies directly on the edge of the mysterious Shadowline, a shroud of endless mist that marks the entrance to the realm of the fairy-folk, the Qar. Crossing the Shadowline is said to drive any human mad, but, as far as anyone knows, the line has not moved any further south for centuries. Now, inexplicably, it has begun to creep slowly but surely deeper into the lands of Southmarch, bringing an unknown menace with it.

The third and final book to the trilogy, Shadowrise, is apparently due out in 2010.

Am 30. August 2009 wird man auf der Homepage vom Fantasy/SciFi Autor Tad Williams ein Interview mit ihm, per Livestream, verfolgen können, wo er Fragen zu seinem neuesten Werk “Die Drachen der Tinkerfarm” beantworten wird.

“Eigentlich sollte es ein ganz normaler Ferienaufenthalt auf dem Land werden, aber was die Geschwister Tyler und Lucinda auf der geheimnisvollen Tierfarm ihres Onkels erleben, übersteigt jede Vorstellungskraft. Der erste Band einer spannenden Fantasyserie von Bestsellerautor Tad Williams und Deborah Beale.” (Verlagszusammenfassung)

Tad Williams ist unter anderem der Autor der “Otherland” Dystopie, sowie dem Fantasy Epos “Das Geheimnis der großen Schwerter”. Sein neuestes Buch ist wieder im Fantasy Genre angesiedelt, und soll wohl auch etwas für jüngere Leser sein. Wie zu erwarten war, ist “Die Drachen der Tinkerfarm” nur der Beginn einer ganzen Reihe. Tad Williams arbeitet nicht alleine an dieser neuen Fantasy Welt, seine Frau Deborah Beale ist diesmal nämlich mit von der Partie. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf das Buch, was ich bisher von Williams gelesen habe, hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Wenn ich “Erdsee” bis Ende des Monats ausgelesen habe, werde ich mich direkt drauf stürzen. Die Leseprobe gefällt mir auf jeden Fall sehr gut.

Brother and sister, Tyler and Lucinda are like many normal preteen kids. They live off video games, television programs and extended phone calls about absolutely nothing. They are exceptionally undeniably normal. That is of course till they receive an unexpected invitation from their Great Uncle Gideon (who till just that moment they didn’t know existed) inviting them to stay with him at his farm.

Arriving at Ordinary Farm expecting the worst Tyler and Lucinda are dazzled by the ever increasingly extra-ordinariness of Ordinary Farm. Instead of cows and pigs and roosters Ordinary Farm hosts a large variety of creatures previously unheard of in farming, least of all dragons and a flying monkey.  Suddenly farm life doesn’t seem quite so boring anymore when you are taking care of supposedly mythical creatures and you really see Tyler and Lucinda grow as characters from whiny little kids to really engaging personalities.

 Strange things are afoot at the farm though, at least more strange than they normally are. The farm and its inhabitants are threatened from the most unlikely of places and it’s up to Tyler and Lucinda to save the day the best way they can.  Along the way brother and sister find that they have some extraordinary talents of their own adding to the excitement.

The Dragons Of Ordinary farm is a fun little book for 9-12 year olds (per the cover). I’m not well versed with the age requirements on books but I think that this could easily be enjoyed by all school aged children.  Though I believe almost any book could be (and should be) read to kids.  The storyline is cute and moves along pretty well after the first few pages.  The writing seemed to opened up and became much more engaging so that by the end I was quite sad to see I was on the very last page.  I want to know more about the mysterious grumpy Mr. Walkwell and the huge viking looking Ragnar and all the other mysterious and varied farm hands of Ordinary Farm.  The story of bringing together family, of choosing one’s family and seeing outside what is expected is quite enjoyable. The characters are well written though I wish one or two would have been a little more detailed. All in all a lovely little book I would gladly recommend to any budding reader.

I hope that I’m right  in my feeling that this is begging for a return visit to Ordinary Farm because I’ll be first on that bandwagon.  Deborah Beale and Tad Williams have wove a brilliant little adventure anyone could sink their teeth into.

I hadn’t read any Tad Williams (though Ivy’s recommended him) until Dave lent me this collection of short stories, Rite. Evidently he’s more of a fantasy author than SciFi which doesn’t bother me. I think my problem with this book was the introductions to each story. I found them annoying and filled with “Aren’t I so clever” type stuff. Which kind of put me off the stories. Also I found that almost every story was just way too long for what it did. Williams talked in one of the introductions about loving language and that’s why he writes, which is fine, but few of the stories really felt like they’d been pruned down to the necessary.

That’s not to say I didn’t like anything about it. The Dark Destructor story was good. I kind of liked the airplane story, it had a good Twilight Zone feel to it. The unicorn story was good. But the Otherland story annoyed me with its fake swearing; the Elric stories weren’t as funny as he thought they were; and the vampire story was too long and he shouldn’t have told the readers it was supposed to be French crusaders because you could see the hasty paint-over job done to make them 13th century Arabs (and it was too long).

When I was a child, one of my favourite day dreams was building my own home.  It was usually underground, inside a tree or under water, and often featured wall-sized fish tanks.  I’ve gathered together a number of fictional homes and rooms that inspired my day-dreams then and now.

First off – the familiar classics, starting with Bilbo Baggins’s own Bag End:

“…it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort.  It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass know in the exact middle.

The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel, without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats – the hobbit was fond of visitors.”

I wonder if Bilbo would have approved of Mr Badger’s home, nestled in the middle of the Wild Wood:

“One of these, Badger flung open, and at once they found themselves in all the glow and warmth of a large fire lit kitchen.

The floor was well-worn brick, and on the wide hearth burnt a fire of logs, between two attractive chimney corners tucked away in the wall, well out of any suspicion of draught.  A couple of high backed settles, facing each other on either side of the fire, gave further sitting accommodation for the sociably disposed.  In the middle of the room stood a long table of plain boards placed on trestles, with benches down each side.  At one end of it, where an arm-chair stood pushed back, were spread the remains of Badger’s plain but ample supper.

Rows of spotless plates winked from the shelves of the dresser at the far end of the room, and from the rafters overhead hung hams, bundles of dried herbs, nets of onions, and baskets of eggs.”

Not as well appointed as Bag End, maybe, but every bit as comfortable. Now I come to think of it, Bilbo and Moley would have got on well together. A pity they never met.  Here is Badger letting Mole and Ratty in from the cold – an illustration by Ernest H Shepherd:

Not nearly as comfortable, but every bit as home-like, is Laura Ingalls Wilder’s  log cabin in the middle of the  vast, lonely, wild prairie.  It has walls of logs, and a stretched roof  made of the canvas covering of their wagon. Here it is by day:

“It was a pleasant house.  A soft light came through the canvas roof, wind and sunshine came through the window holes, and every crack in the four walls glowed a little because the sun was overhead.”

And by night:

“Mary and Laura lay in their little bed on the ground inside the new house, and watched the sky through the window hole to the east.  The edge of the big, bright moon glittered at the bottom of the window space, and Laura sat up.  She looked at the great moon, sailing silently higher in the clear sky.

Its light made silvery lines in all the cracks on that side of the house.  The light poured through the window hole and made a square of soft radiance on the floor.  It was so bright that Laura saw Ma plainly when she lifted the quilt at the door and came in.”

My imaginary homes usually had a library or a museum of natural history.  This was because  of  Jules Verne’s 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea. I love Captain Nemo’s  submarine the Nautilus, particularly the Drawing Room:

“I passed into an immense drawing-room splendidly lighted.  It was a vast, four sided room, thirty feet long, eighteen wide and fifteen high.  A luminous ceiling, decorated with light arabesques, shed a soft clear light over all the marvels accumulated in this museum. For it was in face a museum, in which an intelligent and prodigal hand had gathered all the treasures of nature and art, with the artistic confusion which distinguishes a painter’s studio.”

It also had windows out into the ocean – the ultimate wall-size fish tank, in fact.

Another watery home is that of  Kunohara, a character in Tad William’s Otherland: Sea of Silver Light.  A bit of background is needed here to make sense of this house, if you can call it that.

Otherland  deals with computer generated virtual worlds.  A mysterious and possibly dangerous method is used to create these worlds, which allows you to experience the virtual space exactly as you do real life – with no lag for processing graphics, and access to all senses including smell and touch.

Kunohara, an entomologist, has created virtual space in which the visitor can experience the world as though they were smaller than an ant.  In the middle of this is his home – a bubble floating in an endless eddy in a small river.  Here Paul Jonas finds himself standing inside the bubble home:

” The sky curved over him like a weirdly gleaming bowl, and the towering trees which had stretched upwards like pillars holding the heavens now bent over him like bystanders examining and accident victim.  Paul felt a solid floor beneath his feet, and turned slowly to discover an entire room behind him, multilevelled, furnished sparsely but attractively with screens and low furniture.

Beyond the furnishings, the stairs, and the different levels of flooring, the world seemed to distort again, but instead of trees and sky, the other half of the wide space seemed to cower beneath a curved wall of foaming water.”

Kunohara’s home bobs in the eddying water, and you can look through its lower floor at the stream bed beneath where tiny fish and insects appear like subterranean monsters.

I can think of many appealing homes in children’s literature, but not so many in the adult books. So I will end where I began – Bilbo peacefully at home – an illustration by Alan Lee:

Als Marion Zimmer Bradley noch lebte, war sie die Königin der Celebrimonials. Auf unzähligen neu erschienenen Fantasyromanen stand als Zitat von Bradley “Das beste Fantasybuch, das ich seit langem gelesen habe” auf der Rückseite. Ob sie auch nur eines der Bücher wirklich gelesen hatte, soll dahingesellt bleiben. Ein würdiger Nachfolger für Bradley als Klappentext-Claqueur ist jedenfalls gefunden. Terry Brooks, der Autor der Shannara-Romane, äußert sich immer häufiger zu Neuerscheinungen.

Was treibt ihn dazu? Liest er zu viel oder zu wenig? Wenn man sich die Ankündigungen auf seiner Homepage anschaut, hat er doch genug zu tun. Nicht einmal die Ideen für weitere bescheuerte Shannara-Titel gehen ihm demnach aus. Dass er junge, noch unbekannte Kollegen fördern will, erklärt die zahlreichen Celebrimonials nicht. Jedenfalls nicht allein. Peter V. Brett mag sich über Brooks Unterstützung gefreut haben. Doch Tad Williams dürfte eine solche Schützenhilfe nicht nötig haben. Und doch wird sein neues Buch, das er zusammen mit seiner Frau geschrieben hat, ein Zitat von Terry “Shannara” Brooks auf dem Umschlag bekommen. “Die Drachen der Tinkerfarm” (The Dragons of the Ordinary Farm) erscheint am 31. August bei der Hobbit Presse. Ein Grund, sich auf den Sommer zu freuen.  Mit 380 Seiten dürfte es zu den kürzesten Williams-Werken gehören und die Geschichte richtet sich wohl eher an jüngere Leser. Da es sich um den Auftakt zu einer neuen Reihe handel, wird sie wohl doch eine insgesamt stattliche Länge erreichen. Band 2 ist bereits für den Herbst 2010 angekündigt – hoffentlich kommt das Buch dann ohne eine Phrase des Jubelpersers Terry Brooks aus.

På söndag kan man bege sig till Norrköping och ta del av Arkivet för ufo-forsknings 18 000 rapporter om oidentifierade flygande föremål. (DN) Frågan är ju varför man inte alltid kan ta del av dem?

I ett tidigare inlägg återberättade jag vad någon sagt:
“Det vore förmätet att tro att vi var ensamma i universum med tanke på att det finns fler solar än sandkorn på en sandstrand, frågan är om de andra är vänligt sinnade eller inte.“
Att skicka ut signaler i rymden med meddelanden som säger “Hej! Här är vi!”, typ, tycker jag verkar vansinnigt. Finns det liv därute så får vi nog räkna med att dessa varelser fungerar ungefär som vi gör när vi stöter på något oväntat och okänt som kan vara ett hot… Det är nog bäst att vi gömmer oss så gott vi kan!

2. Vad skulle du säga om du såg en varelse komma ut ur ett Ufo?
Jag följer nog Nalle Puhs råd: “Det är roligare att prata med någon som inte använder långa, svåra ord, utan hellre korta, lätta ord som “Vill du ha lite mat?”

3. Om du mötte utomjordingar och de kunde läsa: vilken bok skulle du lämna över till dem?
Kanske Dalai Lamas “Ett öppet hjärta: att visa medkänsla i vardagen”…

4. Läser du Science Fiction? Har du någon favoritbok eller serie i den kategorin?
Inte speciellt gärna, men jag älskade Tad Williams serie “Otherland”.

After years of going through second-hand bookstores, I think I’ve pretty much perfected the fine art of Glancing/Scanning/Buying (when I have money of course). Except for the rare mistake or two (those damn books had pretty covers), my skills haven’t failed me yet.

Here are the books I’ve rescued from the dreaded Pile:

The science fiction novel tells the story of a frightening virtual network created by a group of rich men known as The Grail Brotherhood. These men include; Felix Jongleur, who was a child at the time of the First World War, and is currently the world’s oldest man; Jiun Biao, a Chinese economist, described as “the terror of Asia;” and Robert Wells, the owner of Telemorphix, the world’s largest telecommunications company. The book tells the story of a group of ordinary people who are drawn into the network to stop them.

Lesungen gehören eindeutig zu den Höhepunkten für leidenschaftliche Leser. Wo sonst erlebt man den Schöpfer des aktuellen Lieblingsbuches so intensiv, wo sonst trifft man so viele Gleichgesinnte?

Die besten beiden Lesungen, die ich jemals besucht habe, waren von Tad Williams und Wladimir Kaminer. Ersterer gab mit viel schauspielerischem Verve und ausgeprägtem Stimmeinsatz Auszüge aus seinem damals gerade auf Deutsch erschienen „Der Blumenkrieg“ zum Besten, letzterer saß zwar einfach nur da und las mit etwas monotoner Stimme sowie leicht osteuropäischem Akzent, aber in Kombination mit seinem unvergleichlich lakonischen Witz war das schlicht zum Kaputtlachen.

Einen deutschsprachigen Fantasy- oder SF-Autor lesen zu hören und zu sehen, ist nicht weiter schwierig. Die Verlage schicken sie zur Anpreisung neuer viel versprechender Werke regelmäßig auf Lesetour selbst in kleinere Orte. Einen Autor aus den USA, Großbritannien oder gar Australien live zu erleben, gehört aber zu den Ausnahmen. Schließlich sind damit erhebliche organisatorische und finanzielle Aufwände verbunden, und das überlegt sich ein Verlag verständlicherweise zweimal. Im letzten Jahr hat der zur Randomhouse-Gruppe gehörende Manhattan-Verlag den Kultautor Neal Stephenson eingeflogen, damit er hiesigen Journalisten Interviews zu „Principia“, dem gerade veröffentlichten dritten Band seiner Barock-Trilogie, geben konnte. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, mit ihm zu sprechen, und es war ein sehr anregender Abend.

Nun gibt es da einen bärtigen Autor aus den USA. Sehnsüchtig erwarten Fans aus aller Welt den neuen Band seines Fantasy-Epos. Nein, es ist nicht GRRM, sondern Patrick Rothfuss. Zwar zeichnet sich mittlerweile recht deutlich ab, dass Teil zwei seiner Kingkiller-Trilogie gegen Ende des Jahres in den USA erscheinen wird, doch eine Lesereise durch deutschsprachige Lande ist definitiv noch Spekulation.

Um so heftiger die Erkenntnis, dass Pat im Mai (ja, dieses Jahr) nach Europa reisen wird. Eher aus privaten Gründen, doch er schreibt in seinem Blog auch, dass er auch LESEN WIRD. Leider aber nicht in Deutschland oder Österreich oder der Schweiz. Tough luck, wie der Amerikaner sagt. Das hat natürlich viel Enttäuschung hervorgerufen, so mancher Fan macht sich auch Luft auf Pats Blog. Er wiederum bedauert, dass er dieses Mal nicht nach D/AU/CH kommen wird und vertröstet auf Unterstützung durch Klett-Cotta, wenn sein neues Buch auf Deutsch erscheinen wird. Wollen wir‘s mal hoffen.

Im nächsten Monat jedenfalls kommt Mr. Rothfuss auch nach Amsterdam, was einigermaßen in der Nähe der Memesis-Virtualis-Zentrale liegt. Wenn es die Chandrian wollen, wird dann an dieser Stelle ein Bericht samt Fotos über die Lesung veröffentlicht.

A raíz de los comentarios a la entrada sobre “La estación de la Calle Perdido“, se me ha ocurrido que bien podía reincidir en una de mis obsesiones, la reivindicación de autores u obras poco o mal consideradas. En concreto, tocaría de nuevo (ya lo hice en blogs pasados) promocionar a Tad Williams, autor de mastodónticos libros de fantasía (aunque con algún pequeño desvío ocasional hacia la ciencia ficción), que en España tuvo la mala suerte de ser publicado por Timun Mas en plena fiebre de la Dragonlance y franquicias similares (“Crónicas de Belgararth”, “Índigo”, “La espada de Joram”, Elenium”…) y, hablando claro, encajó tan mal como una pieza de un puzzle de los tochos en un rompecabezas infantil de esos formados por cubos. Para más inri, la crisis de Timun Mas de finales de los 90, dejó su saga de Otherland a medio publicar (aunque posteriormente se ha completado en Círculo de Lectores), confirmándolo como un autor maldito. Demasiado literario para los consumidores de franquicias y con la etiqueta de autor de consumo rápido para el aficionado con ínfulas (ése que no se acercaría a una franquicia de Timun ni aunque le llevaran estirando de los testículos). Y es una pena, porque Tad Williams no tiene nada que envidiarles a George R.R. Martin o a David Gemmell (salvo haber sido publicados en Gigamesh). Tal vez su obra, al menos la más conocida, no suponga la cumbre de la originalidad, pero yo sigo considerándolo el segundo mejor autor de fantasía épica que he leído (tras el inalcanzable Tolkien).

He aquí sus avales:

En 1985 publicó su primera novela, la primera y única (hasta donde yo sé) obra de fantasía épica felina: “La canción de Cazarrabo” (“Tailchaser song”). Si hubiera que dedicarle un solo adjetivo, creo que sería refrescante. La historia nos narra las visicitudes de un gato callejero, Cazarrabo, enfrentado a una terrible amenaza, concretada en misteriosas desapariciones de miembros de la raza felina. La originalidad de la novela radica en que jamás abandona el punto de vista gatuno. Nos presenta el mundo tal y como lo vería un minimo que considerara a su raza la principal (el hombre no es sino un desconcertante animal con el que más vale no entrar en tratos). Los gatos de Tad Williams poseen su propio folclore, sus leyendas, sus dioses y su organización social, al margen de la humana (en cierto momento, Cazarrabo se encuentra con un macho castrado por sus “dueños”, hecho que suscita en él rechazo pero sobre todo incomprensión). Lo más destacable, sin embargo, es que sin traicionar nunca la felinidad de su protagonista (nada de habilidades o comportamientos antropomorfizados), la novela consigue transmitirnos toda su carga épica y constituye una epopeya a la altura de cualquier obra de su subgénero. Una auténtica joya a descubrir (bien sea en su edición original de Timun o, a una mala, en la edición de la colección Grandes Autores de la Literatura Fantástica).

Una vez ya dominadas las herramientas básicas del oficio, se lanzó a la publicación, entre 1988 y 1993 de una saga titánica, “Añoranzas y pesares” (“Memory, Sorrow and Thorn”), que sigo considerando, casi quince años después de haberla terminado por primera vez, la segunda mejor obra de fantasía épica tras “El Señor de los Anillos” (lo siento, pero “Canción de Hielo y Fuego” ni se le acerca). La tri-tetralogía (el último volumen le salió tan tocho que, quitando la edición original en inglés, siempre se ha dividido en dos tomos) narra las aventuras de Simon, un joven pinche en el castillo de Hayholt, que se convierte en discípulo del mago Morgenes (más un hombre sabio, con ciertas reminiscencias del Merlín) justo tras la muerte de Juan el Presbítero, el viejo rey, vencedor del dragón con cuyos huesos se ha construido el trono. Elías, su hijo mayor, pronto se muestra un soberano mucho menos capaz, dejando entrar en su círculo íntimo al sacerdote Pryrates, cuya oculta agenda lanza al reino y a todo el continente, Osten Ard, a una guerra (en parte civil, contra los seguidores del hijo menor, Josua). Mientras tanto, en el lejano norte, un antiguo poder despierta y un odio acumulado durante siglos está presto a descargar sobre los hombres la venganza de sus antiguos pobladores.

La saga toma elementos históricos (con diversos reinos inspirados en civilizaciones como los anglosajones antiguos, los vikingos o un imperio en decadencia, que incluso en su lengua se reconoce como un reflejo del romano), de la mitología germánica y británica (especialmente de las leyendas artúricas, con una religión similar a la cristiana, influenciada por elementos nórdicos) y de la fantasía de Tolkien (la principal raza mágica son los shita, con cierto parecido con los elfos; la única copia que conozco que ha logrado distanciarse de su inspiración, creando una civilización casi alienígena), girando la trama en torno al acertijo de las espadas, una profecía ambigua que habla de tres espadas mágicas perdidas (llamadas en el original Memory, Sorrow y Thorn), cuya unión precipitará una resolución al conflicto. La historia, aun siendo a grandes rasgos perfectamente reconocible por cualquier lector experimentado, presenta suficientes giros para mantener en todo momento la atención y es por momentos titánica en su vastedad, con decenas de personajes interaccionando, separándose y confluyendo en un tapiz perfectamente tejido, envolviendo la historia principal, un rito de madurez que lleva al despreocupado Simon a desempeñar un papel crucial en los acontecimientos.

Sin embargo, lo que me atrajo en su momento (casi dos décadas atrás), cuando rebuscaba en la estantería de fantasía del Corte Inglés, decidiendo qué libro quería que me compraran (sólo uno), fue el pequeño párrafo de presentación de “El trono de huesos de dragón”. En vez de ocupar la contraportada con una sinopsis laudatoria del libro, el editor había decidido transcribir un fragmento de la novela, aquél en que Simon se encuentra por primera vez con el susodicho trono. No ocurre nada especial, pero la calidad de la narración (aunque posiblemente por entonces no lo apreciara así), me atrajo de inmediato. Ésa es la principal virtud de Tad Williams: escribe rematadamente bien y siente una fuerte inclinación por la descripción, creando ambientes maravillosos con una enorme riqueza léxica, sacrificando parte de la acción en favor de una cuidadosa construcción de la trama (vamos, todo lo contrario a lo que era la norma en las franquicias timunmaseras). También ayudó la magnífica edición (echo de menos esos volúmenes bien cosiditos), con una no menos maravillosa ilsutración de Michael Whelan (realizada ex-profeso para la saga).

A título anecdótico, después de leer a toda mecha los dos primeros tomos (“El trono de huesos de dragón”, “La Roca del Adiós”), tuve que esperar años a que sacaran el tercero (ya había desesperado de verla concluida y me había leído tres veces los dos primeros)… para descubrir que “A través del nido de Ghants” no era la conclusión. Por fortuna, “La torre del Ángel Verde” no se hizo esperar demasiado.

Desde entonces, ha sido reeditada varias veces. En formato bolsillo, cargándose las portadas y dividiendo cada libro en dos (sí, son tochos, pero eso es pasarse), en tapa dura con una calidad algo inferior a la original, y en bolsillo con tapa dura en una colección de kiosco… no sé si también en Círculo), pero nunca ha llegado a cosechar el reconocimiento que se merece. ¿Cuál huiera sido el resultado de haberla editado Gigamesh, Bibliópolis o la Factoría(permitidme el juego intelectual, aunque por aquella época ninguna estaba en activo), o incluso Nova, que se decantó por los dragones de Perth de Anne McAffrey o la infame serie de Shannara de Terry Brooks? Tengo el convencimiento de que entonces seguirían traduciéndose sus libros y no se encontraría en una especie de limbo para el aficionado español.

De su obra, aparte de lo comentado sólo se ha traducido la serie de Otherland, una ciencia ficción muy particular, pues trata de realidades virtuales inmersivas, controladas por grandes magnates (diabólicos en plan James Bond), que recrean ambientes tales como el Barsoom de Burroughs, o el País de las Maravillas de Lewis Carroll, o una cocina gigantesca, o el antiguo Egipto, o… decenas y decenas de ambientes por los que un grupo variopinto de avatares debe avanzar en pos de su liberación (pues su cuerpo en el mundo real ha quedado en coma justo cuando accedían a esta realidad virtual ultraavanzada). La saga comenzó a publicarse en EE.UU. en 1996 con “City of Golden Shadow”, y es particularmente interesante porque aborda el tema desde una perspectiva muy alejada del cyberpunk (que por aquella época daba sus últimos coletazos). Al ser Tad Williams un escritor de fantasía, su principal interés no es la tecnología en sí (que describe con la vaguedad con que podría referirse a un elemento mágico), sino en el efecto de la misma sobre la sociedad y los individuos. Si “Snowcrash” es considerada como la creadora del concepto de avatar en mundo virtuales, sin duda tal idea llega a su madurez en Otherland (publicada cuatro años después). Uno de los personajes, un joven aquejado de una grave enfermedad degenerativa, es uno de los más afamados héroes (un guerrero bárbaro) en el juego de rol online del País Medio, y todas sus interacciones sociales las realiza en ambientes virtuales (como Second Life, pero con mejores gráficos y con telepresencia virtual mediante un enlace neuronal). Así, lisiado y condenado a una muerte prematura en el mundo real, un héroe mítico en el virtual, no puede sino precipitarse hacia la aventura cuando se tropieza por casualidad con Otherland, una red con una potencia infinitamente superior a todo cuanto ha conocido.

No puedo explicar mucho más en estas breves líneas (hay otra media docena de personajes principales, cada uno con su propia historia). Sin embargo, sí puedo afirmar que Otherland es una serie acerca de las posibilidades del mundo virtual, al tiempo que un homenaje a decenas de clásicos de la literatura fantástica y un derroche de imaginación que se extiende a lo largo de cuatro gruesos volúmenes. Timun Mas comenzó a publicar la serie a finales de los 90, en tapa blanda y dividiendo cada tomo en dos, pero la aventura editorial concluyó en la primera parte del tercero “La montaña de cristal negro”, cuando canceló todas su colecciones, dejando en el aire la saga que sólo recuperaría años después Círculo de Lectores (que ha publicado los cuatro tomos, añadiéndose a los ya mencionados “Río de fuego azul” y “Mar de luz plateada”).

A partir de aquí, todo está inédito en España. En 1994, publicó “Caliban’s hour” (de la que poco sé) y en 2003 “The war of the flowers”, una historia de fantasía que concluye en un solo volumen (si bien de 800 páginas en inglés). El protagonista, Theo, es un don nadie en nuestro mundo que un día recibe la visita de un hada diminuta, Applecore, que lo transporta a fairyland para librarlo de la persecución de una bestia asesina. Sin embargo, fairyland no es como podríamos esperar, sino que es un mundo sumido en las convulsiones y la degradación (ecológica y social) de una sociedad en plena revolución industrial, aunque la industria en fairyland es lo que aquí conocemos como magia. Las grandes casas aristocráticas (cada una con una flor como emblema) combaten unas con otras en una guerra soterrada (aunque de vez en cuando surge a la superficie) por hacerse con el control de los recursos mágicos, mientras el pueblo llano sufre la explotación de estos fairylords. Esta visión desmitificadora, es al mismo tiempo fiel al concepto anglosajón de fairy (algo distinto de nuestras “hadas”). Los fairylords son individuos hermosos y poderosos, pero para nada benévolos. Son una especie de curce entre magnates de la industria y capos mafiosos, cuyo despotismo y afán por conquistar el poder están llevando a su tierra a la ruina, proceso en el que, evidentemente, Theo tendrá a su pesar algo que decir. En definitiva, un tomo muy interesante si alguien se atreviera a publicarlo (por su longitud y por las evidentes dificultades de su traducción).

Su siguiente proyecto fue una nueva trilogía fantástica, “Shadowmarch”, que empezó a publicar online por entregas (con una cuota inicial y única de 14,99 dólares). El mercado aún no estaba preparado, así que al poco de concluir la primera parte, dio por concluido el experimento (que no había cosechado suficiente apoyo de público) y reescribió lo que tenía para lanzar la novela en el 2004 (el intervalo entre novela y novela para Tad Williams oscila entre uno y dos años, en parte por su longitud y en parte por su meticulosidad). La segunda parte, “Shadowplay”, fue publicada en el 2007 y para finales de este año/principios del 2010 está prevista la conclusión, “Shadowrise”. Por lo que he podido comprobar (y leer, pues los primeros capítulos siguen estando disponibles en la página web del proyecto), se trata de un retorno a la fantasía épica en la línea de “Añoranzas y pesares”.

Para finales de este año se espera también la publicación de la primera entrega en la serie “Ordinary Farm” (Ordinary es el apellido de los dueños, en particular de la pareja de hermanos protagonista), escrita en colaboración con su mujer Deborah Beale. El primer volumen “The dragons of Ordinary Farm” ya ha sido publicada en alemán (al parecer, en Alemania sí que ha conseguido labrarse un nombre), mientras que el segundo, “A witch at Ordinary Farm” está en preparación. Por lo que he podido investigar, me da que se trata de fantasía de corte claramente juvenil (aunque los yanquis la etiqueten como young-adult).

Por último, está preprando, para cuando acabe con Shadowmarch, una nueva trilogía de fantasía con un toque de género negro, que cuenta con los títulos provisionales de “Sleeping late of Judgement Day”, “The Bobby dollar books” y “My so-called afterlife”.

Terminado mi alegato, voy a hacer un llamamiento a los lectores para que le concedan una oportunidad a Tad Williams (“La canción de Cazarrabo” o “Añoranzas y pesares” son perfectas para comenzar), y a los editores para que nos traígan el resto de su producción, que tampoco es tan extensa (me encantaría ver por aquí “Shadowmarch”, aunque es posible que de todas formas acabe comprándomela en versión original, que fue como completé ”Otherland”). Y pensar en la de basura anglosajona que ha conseguido llegar a publicarse (¡y con cierto éxito!) por estos lares mientras Tad Williams permanece en la oscuridad. Los misterios del mundo editorial son inescrutables.
