Oooh, just look at that queue! Such vitriol and rage. I see you’ve all successfully channeled

Oooh, just look at that queue! Such vitriol and rage. I see you’ve all successfully channeled your inner Bobby Knight… kudos! Let’s see how this plays out.

Q: I’m guessing you wouldn’t know the difference between a foil, epee and sabre were they laid in front of you. And yet you find it somehow appropriate that you judge the very nature of the sport of fencing from behind your keyboard. I guess my question would be, where do you get the nerve?

- Armando Valverde, Somerton, Arizona

A: The nerve comes very natural to me, Armando, like my way with words and stuff, and my lilac scent. I didn’t “get” it from anywhere… I’ve always had it (though I hear they now sell it at Wal-Mart for a very decent price). To assume that I wouldn’t deconstruct a game I may or may not know… well, that’s on you.

Besides, I would, in fact, know the difference between a foil, epee and sabre. Now, whether or not that’s thanks to a quick google search I’m not saying one way or another. But I could at least feign a certain level of knowledge when it comes to your game. Again, that’s game.

Q: Fat sailors sink boats.

- Uli Schulte, Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony, Germany

A: Like sarcastic Germans without questions ruin mailbags. Burn.

Q: Table Tennis not a sport?!?! Seriously? Are you sure you’re not thinking of table football? What gives?

- Nils Torstensson, Ystad, Sweden

A: Now that’s a question… well, a series of questions, which I will respond to in reverse order.

You ask “what gives?” Santa Clause, Mother Theresa, the Red Cross and this page (The Art of the Plug, coming soon, watch this space). As it pertains to my decision, I believe I explained myself quite skillfully in my original column. As a Swede, you’re surely aware of Jan-Ove Waldner’s performance at the 2004 Olympics, when he reached the semifinals at almost 40. Are you saying with 20 years and 50 pounds, he couldn’t perform at least moderately well? Well are you?

You ask “are you sure you’re not thinking of table football?” Yes, I’m sure.

You ask “seriously?” Yes, seriously.

You ask “Table Tennis not a sport?” Yes… wait… no… well, yes, table tennis is not a sport. No, it’s not a sport. So yes and no. Clear?

Q: You heard Carson Palmer’s offseason comments, right? That someone was going to die during a game? Do you agree?

- Felix Manlove, Tooele, Utah

A: Yes, but only in a Last Boy Scout style shootout on the field. Would you really put it past some of today’s players? Speaking of that Oscar-worthy scene, does anyone remember what actor played that character? That’s right, it was Billy Blanks of Tae-Bo fame. Just thought everyone should know…

Q: Is my career over?

- Allen Iverson, Hampton, Virginia

A: Hey, check it out everyone! Allen Iverson wrote in to my mailbag! Mark this moment down! This is the exact moment Ed Honcho hit the big time! Allen Iverson! I can’t believe it!

Q: So Greco-Roman wrestling is a game, huh? Since clearly you have no knowledge of the game, I’d like to challenge you to a match… teach you a thing or two. You up for it?

- Jake Deitchler, Ramsey, Minnesota

A: You’re on, Deitchler! I’m gonna wipe the floor… what’s that? Hold on a minute… Oh, right. You’re lucky Deitchler. My manager’s just reminded me that I have this thing that… I have to go to. And I am already in my suit. You’re lucky, buddy!

Q: I can wait.

- Jake Deitchler, Ramsey, Minnesota

A: Oh.. well, uh… after that, I’ve got this other thing I’ve got to go to. You know… life of a celebrity. And then, you know… I’m very busy, just as a general statement of fact. I don’t really know when I could squeeze in… a, uh, match. Which is lucky for you! But again, uh, sorry to disappoint. Gotta go, yo.

One of my friends has dubbed the ATI Comprehensive Predictor our program’s “exit exam”. That’s a really good way to look at it, especially considering we’re not eligible to take the NCLEX until pass this 185-question monster.

Which begins tomorrow at 0800. I’m amazed I have fingernails left.

I was going to take one more practice test tonight, but I decided that it would make me completely freak out if I scored lower than last time. And I do NOT need to have a nervous breakdown less than 12 hours before the real thing. So I will take a Melatonin (my Godsend for early bedtimes and earlier mornings) and tuck myself in with my drug and lab values flashcards until I pass out.

I’ll be waking with the roosters and fitting in a little Tae Bo action to get the heart pumping and the blood circulating. It seems fitting to visualize giving this test a knockout punch.

May visions of CVP values and theophylline levels be dancing in my head…

Menschen in Trainings

Wer will findet hier meine persönliche Workout-Collection

Today’s endearing, lesser-known music track is from the late ’80s-early ’90s chees

Today’s endearing, lesser-known music track is from the late ’80s-early ’90s cheeseball martial arts extravaganza, King of the Kickboxers (starring none other than ingenious Tae Bo creator, Billy Blanks, as the villain!). The choreography is tight and outrageous, and the expressions, script and acting are beyond terrible. Seriously, this last fight scene is so precious, an extreme blend of acrobatic and choreographic talent as well as utterly tacky film cliches.

The music is fun, reminiscent of classic ’80s fare, like John Woo’s The Killer. It was composed by Richard Yuen, a Taiwanese (?) composer, who scores soundtracks and writes for pop musicians in East Asia. Or something. I don’t know, really, as I didn’t find this song because I was listening to Richard Yuen’s back-catalog of nuanced synth-wind/reed instrument-laden work. No! I was searching for the ultimate in martial arts foolhardiness and exciting cornball bravado.

I think the film had a Asian production staff, not to mention the choreography was done by Tony Leung Siu Hung, whom did several other movies in kickboxing’s hey-day, including the boldly cheesy but impressive, No Retreat, No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers. That one also starred Loren Avedon (from King of the Kickboxers) and had supreme, in-house, synth music — since it seemed to be produced by the same film firm.

Why the rights to the lousy Double Dragon movie weren’t handed over to this production crew and staff is completely beyond me. This stuff is basically Double Dragon live-action, only more rad (and it’s also unnecessarily violent).

Anyway, enjoy the ending titles. Somehow, really soft, explicitly melancholy ending themes on studio keyboards set against obnoxiously violent stories with minimal character development always really tickle my heart-strings. I’m no stranger to good taste, it’s true!

Hello, chickadees! My calendar has informed me that it is September 29th, and you know what that mea

Hello, chickadees! My calendar has informed me that it is September 29th, and you know what that means–the countdown to HALLOWEEN has begun! Seriously, have you thought about your costume? I’ve thought about mine. I won’t reveal it here yet, but I will let you know it involves a leotard.

Yeah.

And since (as I heard a pageant coach explain it so neatly) you can’t put 10 pounds of sugar in a 5 pound bag, I decided to turn to my old friend, Billy Blanks.

You remember Billy Blanks of Tae Bo fame, right?

Aw yeah.

Of course you do.

I bought Billy’s Tae Bo box set on VHS before I left for my first year of college, determined to fend off the freshman 15. Little did I know I’d be so disappointed at my tiny women’s college that I’d survive on a diet of saltines and vodka-and-cranberry juice and end up losing 15+ pounds.

What was once a 4-tape set has been whittled down by time to one VHS tape, but luckily it is the basic workout, rather than the instructional video or (heaven forbid!) the advanced workout. Baby steps.

The only VCR in my house is in my bedroom, so I kicked the dog beds out to clear a space between my bed and my dresser for jabs and uppercuts. Unfortunately I didn’t sweep up my gym space and I ended up slipping on all the accumulated dog dirt and hair during a stretch. At least it wasn’t during a back kick. Another snag was when Ernie came bounding in the bedroom, excited by my enthusiastic answer to Billy’s, “how are you feeling?!?” (answer: “All right!” *fist pump*) and tackled me onto the bed.

Dammit, Ernie, mommy needs to get rid of 5 pounds of sugar.

All in all, it is a good workout. An especially good ab workout, since Billy’s nipple keeps escaping his unitard? leotard? spandex coveralls? and peeking out at me. My friend Cory and I used to sit on my couch, drinks in hand, clutching our sides and laughing at each appearance of the “renegade nipple.” A good drinking game AND a good ab workout.

Oh, MY, GOSH! Tae bo hurts. How could I ever forget. I tried today to do the workout WITH the resistance bands. It is insane. I swear, those people on the elite boot camp dvds are FIT! Well, I am getting there slowly. It was quite a day of showers, winds, and then intermittent sunshine. The day went by in a flash, but I’m so glad I did my workout. I’m adding some new pics of me here for all to see. Oh, I also have a picture of my arms from Sept 26, 2006. I took another one 3 years later, looks quite interesting, better quality picture for one, but definitely more toned and defined. Not as much muscle, which is totally fine with me.

The countdown to October 20 continues. My goal was “Lose 20 by Oct 20″. It’s going good. Not seeing much movement on the scale, but otherwise I feel good. I also did a bit of knitting tonight. I’m still learning the basics, the knit stitch and the purl stitch, getting good at missing a loop here or there . I bought white and fuschia pink yarn, so everything I’m making is PRETTY! I hope to make something nice for my niece soon, maybe little booties or a nice scarf.

I tried a new salsa yesterday, Nativa’s Organics -Hot. It is SO good. I thought Old El Paso and Tostitos brand were good, but this is authentic. Don’t know if anyone remembers Chi-chi’s, it was around when I was really small, about 17-18 years ago. Yum. And my favourite nachos are actually Shoppers Drug Mart Life Brand – Multigrain with flaxseeds. They taste amazing and are good for you. That’s what I’m all about these days (or trying to be!) is finding healthy alternatives to the things I absolutely cannot live without.

Last night I bought myself a baby Toblerone (white chocolate, of course) and went to put it in my secret stash cupboard. Lo and behold, there was already one there! Guess I’m ahead of myself. I laughed out loud, I was like “who put that there??” But I guess it was me. So now I have chocolate at my convenience. Life is good!

I can do bad all by myself” gesehen.

Billy Banks is at it again, this time with his best video yet, Tae Bo Amped. The father of Tae Bo wa

Billy Banks is at it again, this time with his best video yet, Tae Bo Amped. The father of Tae Bo was single-handedly responsible for the kick boxing craze that started in the 1990’s. But if you want the well balanced, time tested program as only Billy Banks can bring it to you, you have to try Tae Bo Amped. While he is the creator of Tae Bo, its roots go back much further.

Billy Banks started to develop it when he was studying in Korea and learned about and ancient Korean martial art that was used for self defense and was focused around movement. That art was called Taekwondo. He added elements of boxing, increased the use of kicks, and increased the intensity of the cardio-vascular intensity to develop a program that provided a well balanced program of fitness. Even the name is a marriage of the words Taekwondo and Boxing. That is why he calls it Tae Bo and this newest program is his best yet.

For cardio-vascular heath and weight loss this program can’t be beat. With Billy Banks high energy support he will take you though and intense work out. You feel the pounds melt away as he pushes you forward. By the end of your workout, you will feel breathless but energized. And with the pounds coming off, you’ll start to see the toning of the muscles underneath.

Since Tae Bo is often called kick boxing, it’s no great surprise that the focus is on the legs. In self defense, it makes sense to use the strongest muscles of your body to defend your self. Also, because those muscles are so large, they use a lot of energy and that helps speed up your weight loss.

Now this in no way leaves out the rest of the body. This program is about being well balanced. In doing so, one action affects the body a whole. Watch how the use of your legs builds your whole body.

So far, it is your legs getting the strong work out and burning energy, but those legs have to be controlled to work efficiently, that means using your abs. Those muscles are aiming your strong legs and as the extra weigh burns away it will reveal the strong belly you have been building and getting you ready to look great on the beach.

No don’t think that the upper body gets left out. All this action in your lower body needs to be balanced or you would fall right over. With those fluid moves you are building grace as well as strength. And in the true tradition of Taekwondo, Billy Banks makes use of a staff. It is much shorter than the Korean version, but still provides an important service. It is building a form that can be done over and over again and helping with precise moves time and time again to build definition and reduce the posibility of injury.

Billy Banks’ Tae Bo Amped is a great program. Based on a time tested art but updated to what we want today, this has it all. Give this program a try. You will look better and feel better while building strength and grace. How many programs can offer such a complete program?

So, you have decided to loose a little weight. There is an endless list of diets out there but you want to get in better shape too. What you need is Billy Banks’ Tae Bo Amped. This is the last of Billy Banks Tae Bo videos after a string of wildly successful videos that launched the kick boxing craze. Other programs might teach kick boxing but only Billy Banks can teach Tae Bo and with Tae Bo Amped he has taken it to a new level. After all, he invented it.

Tae Bo started with Billy Banks study of Taekwondo, the ancient Korean martial art of movement and self defense with a strong focus on the strength of the legs and cardio-vascular health. The practice of Taekwondo is so ingrained in Korean culture that it survived attempts to be eliminated by the Japanese during their occupation. Billy Banks increased the use of the kicks into a style more like boxing and Tae Bo was born. The name even derives from it. Taekwondo + Boxing = Tae Bo.

On the cardio-vascular side it is intense, so it is ideal for weight lose. One really needs to be in at least some shape to start with for effective use. The work out is hard but fun. Billy Banks’ charismatic personality helps to inspire you and lets you push yourself harder than you thought you could. By the end of your workout you will feel charged up and ready to take on the world.

Like it Korean ancestor, Tae Bo Amped puts a lot of focus on the legs, building the strength for the kicks. This makes perfect sense as the legs are by far the strongest muscles in the body. After all, they carry your frame around all day, every day. It is also in keeping with the Korean belief that the hands should not be used for fighting.

With all this focus on the legs you might fear the rest of the body gets ignored but this is not the case at all. In fact, the legs are just the starting point. With all that work on the legs and kicks, it works the ads hard as well. You need the strength there to control those strong legs. As the pounds start to come of from the cardio-vascular work out, you’ll see your “6-pack” start to emerge. Nothing is sexier that a strong tight waist on men or women.

Now the upper body does not get ignored either. In traditional Taekwondo, a long staff is used. The upper body has to move strongly too to maintain balance. In Tae Bo Amped, Billy Banks has shortened the staff (a lot safer for your workout partners and windows) but it is long enough to help control form. As anyone who works out can tell you. Proper form is important to prevent injuries and aides in the repetition that brings about definition.

It is easy to see why Tae Bo Amp is growing in popularity so fast. With Billy Banks’ magnetic personality to inspire you, he takes you through his advancements in an old martial art form. With it, you strengthen your heart, lose weight, build muscle mass, and increase balance. It is true a one of a kind program for well rounded fitness.
