ShopNBC, which wants to be home shopping’s premier destination for watches, on Monday will be selling timepieces from the hipster/edgy Ed Hardy.

The selection of watches from the clothing-design line will be on at 2 a.m. Monday morning. We especially liked a “Heart Krush” Quartz women’s watch, with its heart-shaped face, at $150.

There is also a fun men’s “Gladiator” watch, with the Ed Hardy signature graphic art on its face, for $116.

ShopNBC also has a stock of upscale watches it’s selling, including Gucci, Tag Heuer and Movado.

Against all the odds, we made it back from our little jaunt to Geneva in time to attend SalonQP earlier this month. And the first people we stumbled across upon entering One Marylebone were the good folks at Bonham’s. Their stand was the first one we visited, the one we were still loitering on when security finally threw us out at the end of the night, and the one we came back to most often in between.

Here’s why.

It’s something of an understatement to say that Straight-Six had been fretting somewhat since last month when he spent the kind of money that most people lavish on a new car on just two very old looking timepieces. His vintage Rolex Submariner was the one he was most concerned about. Was the bezel original? Had the luminescent pearl been reapplied? Had the dial been tampered with? Did the hands match the dial? These are the sorts of – very understandable – concerns that plague the amateur who dips his unsuspecting toe into the deep and rather murky waters of vintage Rolex collecting. So, it definitely got SalonQP off to a great start when Paul Maudsley, the head of Bonham’s Watches and Wristwatches Department, inspected it thoroughly then looked up decisively from his magnifying glass to confirm its authenticity and value it at more than Straight-Six had paid for it. The relief was palpable.

The second reason we spent so much time with Bonham’s can be summed up in just two words: Arno Haslinger. We didn’t know Arno before that night, hadn’t even heard his name. And, at first meeting him, there was no hint of the depths of his fanaticism – both watch-related and, as it later turned out, automotive.

Arno was working the Bonham stand. He helpfully showed us the various pieces that they had on display, providing insightful commentary on each. As he concluded his tour of their stand, we lingered on the TAG Heuer display. They were showing a couple of classic models (the original Monaco and other chronographs) and a huge coffee table book on the history of the brand. We asked Arno about the book (Heuer Chronographs, Editions Callwey). He told us that “this guy” had devoted 10 years to researching and collecting one example of every single classic Heuer chronograph model – 114 in total. “This guy” then photographed them and documented them in his book but was putting the watches themselves up for auction.

As Arno began flicking through the pages and talking us through some of the amazing anecdotes behind various models in – rather suspicious and almost excruciating – detail, we couldn’t help asking “how do you accumulate so much knowledge about the watches you auction?” Shyly, he confessed “I wrote the book.” We don’t think he would have mentioned it had we not pushed him.

It turns out he’s selling his collection because, having found and documented every watch, he feels it’s time to move on to something else. “What will you turn your attention to now?” we asked, almost afraid of the answer. “I’m thinking about vintage TransAms” he replied deadpan. We searched his face for some tiny sign that he might be joking. We couldn’t find any. The world needs more eccentric, self-effacing and fanatical people like Arno. It was a pleasure chatting to him.

The third reason we fell for the Bonham’s stand is their 2 December sale. They’re auctioning off some fantastic pieces that belong to the Porsche family and were previewing some of them at SalonQP. All the proceeds are going to charity. The standout in our view was the original Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris. We simply adore this watch. It has originality and character in spades and is also so obviously the father of every JLC sports model in production today. A true classic.

Everyone looked so grown up in suits and dresses *sigh*. The food was good for the most part, for some reason the girls all got steaks while the guys got chicken…. yea wrong way around i know. The Entree was this cone looking thing with potato and cheese which tasted alright followed by the main either chicken or beef finished with a creme brulee that wasn’t REALLY a creme brulee. While the food was good the atmosphere was better. Everyone got their freaky freaks on and shredded the dancefloor to the “Nutbush”. All in all it was a great night  which we’ll all remember forever. 3. Sound Card – Yea i bought myself a usb sound card. Reason? dunno. I got a Creative Sound Blaster Play! which is around the same size a usb drive and basically just has an input for a microphone and an headphone/speaker output. The cool thing is that it upmixes all my stereo 2.0 signals to surround sound, you can definitely hear the difference!

4. My Cousin and her new husband came to visit from china. So being awesomely nice i drove them around for the days that they stayed with us. We went to The Rocks which very Victorian and beautiful, the day would’ve been perfect if it hadn’t been 41 degrees

5. Steak – Yesterday night we headed off to black stump for some steak. Now having never REALLY had steak before i didn’t really know what to expect. I ordered the 500g grain fed rump steak done rare with pepper sauce, baked potatoes and salad. And well this photo best sums it up.

When we were at the Basel Watch Fair in Switzerland in 2004, Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Christophe Babin was excited to show us the latest “concept watch” from their laboratories. The watch he showed us, the Monaco V4, was revolutionary in its design.

Inspired by automotive engineering, the movement featured transmission belts in place of traditional wheels and pinions and micro ball bearings in place of rubies. The oscillating circular winding mechanism found in most automatic watches is replaced in the Monaco V4 with a linear winding system that moves up and down like a piston. Four barrels, visible from the back of the watch, provide the watch’s 52 hour power reserve.

Technically it was astonishing and visually it was arresting. Unlike any watch I had ever seen, it was a true reinvention of the mechanical timepiece. It was a fitting piece for Tag Heuer, a company deeply associated with motor racing and whose very name connotes the cutting edge. (TAG was originally an acronym that stood for Techniques d’Avant Garde).

It took five years of painstaking development, but the production watch has finally been released. I say it is now a “production” piece to differentiate it from the “concept” watch we saw five years before.

It will remain extraordinarily limited as only 150 examples of the watch will be made.

The revolutionary movement is housed in a platinum Monaco case and it will sell for 80,000 US dollars.

It’s a slow day at work; the kind I yearn for when, under usual circumstances, I am frantically going from one room to the next, trying my best to be thorough but really just hoping that I didn’t miss a case of molluscum or leave something where it doesn’t belong.  Thankfully, as far as I know, I haven’t done this…yet.  For my patient’s sake, that will be the day I make a career change to something not involving Q-tips and orifices.

The snail’s pace of my day has allowed ample time for two of my favorite non-work related, work activities: window shopping on the internet and eating chocolate cake in the employee break room- leftover from yesterday’s monthly “birthday lunch”.  It’s hard to say which of these activities brings me more satisfaction…if only internet browsing burned those cake calories- like mall-walking.  I don’t even love chocolate cake.  Carrot or cheese, on the other hand, that’s passionate love.  But, it’s there, just waiting to be picked at.  And, I start to feel paranoid if I sit in the office staring at the computer screen for too long- like people are going to start wondering why I’m not doing work or actually, say, seeing patients.  It’s not my fault that no one is showing up for their Pap smears today without the decency to call first.  Maybe I did leave something behind during last year’s exam…

I have a few specific websites that I have to check in with every few days to see if there’s anything new that I have to have…or at least just admire through my computer screen.  One of those is overstock.com, and more specifically, their watch section- as in the wrist accessory complete with moving parts.  This is my fetish.  Yours, Ellen, is shoes.  Mine is watches.  Most recently, I had the good fortune of discovering an “inside connection” at the Swiss Army Headquarters here in Connecticut and became the proud new owner of a deeply discounted beauty, twelve tiny diamonds glittering in the place of numbers.  In all, I’d guess my timepiece collection to be at around seven- nothing to write home about, I know.  But, by definition, a collection is meant to expand and grow in time (pun intended).  Seven times seven (pun intended).  Forty-nine is a good number.  Besides, you have to account for roughly ten of those 49 to be temporarily out of commission due to battery failure.

Someday, I’ll own a Tag Heuer watch.  They are exquisite.  It will have to be a gift from someone who loves me enough to overlook spending, minimum, a thousand dollars on a watch.  Some people might balk at such a price tag and suggest a “better” use of this large sum, like feed a small country or pay for 5 children in Zambia to have surgery on a cleft palate.  “Why not buy yourself a Tag watch?”  you ask.  “Buyer’s guilt,” I reply.  When I was about 10, I saved all my allowance to buy a Sega Game Gear- similar to the early Nintendo Gameboy except with a color screen as opposed to the pea soup tinted display of the Gameboy.  It cost around $250, to my recollection.  I had wanted this, needed this, like a fish needs water.  Yet, after two weeks of dreaming about Sonic the Hedgehog, I returned it.  I was overcome with guilt.  Now, had my mom brought Sonic home for me with her own, hard-earned paycheck, then no problem…

I wonder what it says about me that I feel lost if I leave the house, one day, without a watch?  Probably that I just look ridiculous when I frequently glance at my naked wrist with a defeated look on my face…

Edouard Heuer founded a watchmaking company in 1860.

Some early highlights of the company’s early history include the following: In 1869, Edouard Heuer patented the first crown-winding mechanism for pocket watches. In 1889, during the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the Heuer company won a silver medal for its collection of pocket chronographs. In 1911, the company received a patent for the “Time of Trip”, the first dashboard chronograph.

Ed. Heuer introduced its first wrist chronograph in 1914. The crown was at the twelve o’clock position, as these first wrist chronographs were adapted from pocket chronographs. In 1916, Heuer introduced the “Micrograph”, the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second. In 1933, Heuer introduced the “Autavia”, a dashboard timer used for Automobiles and Aviation (and thus the name “Autavia”). The companion “Hervue” was a clock that had an 8-day movement (meaning that it could run for eight days without being wound).

In the early 1950s, Heuer produced watches for the American retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch. The “Seafarer” and “Auto-Graph” were unique chronographs produced by Heuer to be sold by Abercrombie & Fitch. The “Seafarers” had special dials — with blue, green and yellow patterns — that showed the high-tide and the low-tide. This dial could also be used to track the phases of the moon. Heuer introduced its own version of this chronograph in the late 1960s, known as the “Mareographe”. The “Auto-Graph” was produced in 1953 and 1954, and was designed to compute the speed of an automobile over a measured mile.

In 1958, Heuer introduced a new line of timepieces, designed to be mounted on the dashboard of an automobile — or an airplane or boat. Leading models of these dashboard timers included the Master Time (8-day clock), the Monte Carlo (12-hour stopwatch), the Super Autavia (full chronograph), Sebring (60-minute, split second timer) and Auto-Rallye (60-minute stopwatch). Heuer continued to manufacture this line of timepieces, into the 1980’s.

During the period from the 1950s through the 1970s, Heuers were popular watches among automobile racers, both professionals and amateurs. The Autavia chronograph was introduced in 1962 and featured a rotating bezel, marked in either hours, minutes or with a tachymeter scale. The Autavia name had previously been used on Heuer’s dashboard timers (described above). The Carrera chronograph, designed by Jack Heuer, was introduced in 1963, and became a design icon, known for its clean lines. Most of Heuer chronographs from this period used movements manufactured by Valjoux, including the legendary Valjoux 72 movement (for a 12-hour chronograph).

Heuer acquired the “Leonidas” brand in the early 1960’s, with the combined company marketing watches under the “Heuer-Leonidas” name. One of the designs that Heuer acquired from Leonidas was the “Bundeswehr” chronograph, used by the German air force. These “BWs” feature a “fly-back” mechanism, so that when the chronograph is reset to zero, it immediately begins running again, to time the next segment or event.

In 1969, Heuer was part of a partnership (with Breitling and Hamilton), that introduced the first automatic chronographs. Heuer’s first automatic chronographs were the Autavia, Carrera and Monaco. These chronographs were powered by the Cal 11 and Cal 12 movements (12-hour chronograph); Cal 14 movement (12-hour chronograph and additional hand for GMT / second time-zone); and the Cal 15 movement (30-minute chronograph). An unusual feature of these chronographs was that the winding crown was on the left, with the pushers for the chronograph on the right. The earliest of Heuer’s Cal 11 chronographs (from 1969) used the Chrono-Matic name; soon after that time, Heuer discontinued its use of that reference.

In the early 1980s, Heuer introduced a series of chronographs powered by the Lemania 5100 movement. These chronographs have the minute hand for the chronograph on the center pinion (rather than on a smaller register), greatly improving legibility. This series of chronographs was considered to be very rugged and durable.

TAG Heuer was formed in 1985 when TAG (Techniques d’Avant Garde), manufacturers of high-tech items such as ceramic turbochargers for Formula 1 cars, acquired Heuer. Together they modernized the product line and became one of the biggest names in Swiss watches.

On September 13, 1999 Tag Heuer accepted a bid from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A. of 1.15 billion francs ($739 million) contingent upon a transfer of 50.1% of stocks.

At the end of 2003, TAG Heuer ended its association with F1 as the official timekeeper, allowing the way the graphics are displayed to undergo a facelift in 2004 where Siemens replaced TAG as the timekeeper. It signalled the end of the large black overlays which were an icon during the late 90s and early 2000s.

Today Tag Heuer is expanding all over the world their biggest expansion being Asia. They are being endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan in India who is one of the biggest Bollywood stars in the country.
