Schöne tagclouds basteln – aus der Sicht von Wordl sieht unser Blog so aus:

Kävin Reisjärvellä Ilona -seminaarissa kutsuttuna vieraana nyt torstaina ja perjantaina. Seminaari on vuotuinen Oulun eteläisen alueen kirjastokokoontuminen ja puhuin perjantaina otsikolla Kirjastot ja sosiaalinen media. Paikalla oli kuutisenkymmentä alueen kirjastolaista lähinnä yleisistä kirjastoita, sekä Haapaveden opistolla vastikään aloitetun tietopalvelu- ja kirjastoalan opiskelijoiden ryhmä.

Torstaina olin Haapaveden opistolla juttelemasta sos. mediasta opiston henkilökunnan kanssa.

Kirjastolaisia kun ollaan, niin laitoin yleisön luetteloimaan puheenvuoroani samaan aikaan kun pidin sitä. Välineinä kynät ja post-it -laput. Kahden tunnin puheenvuorosta sain 171 eri avainsanaa l. tagia, yhteensä 238 kappaletta. Väsäsin Wordlella tagipilven, joka siis kuvaa sitä, mistä kuuntelijat ajattelivat minun sanoneen. Klikkaa viereistä pilveä nähdäksesi sen suurempana. Keskeisimmät tagit ovat ilmeisiä koska monet valitsivat ne, erikoisuudet löytyvät sieltä välistä. Tagipilvestä päätellen välittyi suunnilleen sellainen viesti kuin oli tarkoituskin, tai ainakin yleisön mielestä aiheeni oli sama kuin omasta mielestäni. Muutaman muunkin tekemäni version löydät tapahtumasta ja muutenkin reissusta näpsimieni kuvien joukosta. Ohjeena oli, että avainsanojen ei tarvitse olla YSOn tai muun kontrolloidun asiasanaston tai tesauruksen mukaisia, vaan voi käyttää vapaata assosiaatiota. Tätä lisää tietenkin sitä “noisea” ja pidentää pitkää häntää. Hyvä niin. Esitelmässäni kerroin tagittamisesta del.icio.us:issa ja Flickrissä sekä näytin käytännössäkin miten homma toimii.

Mitään kovin kehittynyttä ei tästä visualisoinnista kuitenkaan voi päätellä. Otanta on aika pieni enkä esim. käskenyt kuulijoita laittamaan asiasanoihin kellonaikaa (jotta homma pysyisi yksinkertaisena). Tässä tagipilvessä asioiden läheisyydellä tai värillä ei ole informaatioarvoa, vain koolla. Kaikkea tällaista pitäisi kuitenkin mielestäni tehdä kirjaston omalle metadatalle.

Oulun eteläisessä oli hyvä meininki, olivat esimerkiksi yksissä tuumin luoneet alueelle oman kirjastostrategian. Lisäksi, koska kirjastotyönkään ei tarvitse olla liian vakavaa, oli perinteinen kirjatuenheittokilpailu. Kolme henkeä per kirjasto ja voittaja saa pitää kultaista kiertopokaalia seuraaviin kisoihin asti xD

When I first saw this on the web site, I was immediately attracted with this little animated tag cloud. So I decided to research on how this little widget works.

What I have discovered the tag cloud he made was using SWFObject. “SWFObject is an easy-to-use and standards-friendly method to embed Flex content, which utilizes one small JavaScript file.”

Ogni tanto il blog può essere utile per annotare informazioni o servizi utili di cui si vuol tener memoria per il futuro.

E’ il caso di questo post in cui segnalo un paio di servizi che ho scovato, probabilmente in ritardo, ma che ho trovato molto utili per la generazione automatica di Tagclouds.

Il primo ha un taglio più artistico ed è Wordle, col quale è possibile generare la classica nuvola di parole ricorrenti a partire da un testo liberamente inserito, oppure dal link al proprio sito, blog o pagina dotata di feed Atom o RSS o, infine, dal proprio account del.icio.us.

Il secondo servizio è più classico nella forma ma offre più possibilità di parametrizzazione dal punto di vista del conteggio delle parole. Si tratta di TagCrowd, che oltre al testo libero e al link verso siti, accetta anche l’upload di un file di testo (plain) da elaborare.

E’ inoltre importante rilevare il tipo di output fornito:
Wordle offre la possibilità di stampare la tagcloud prodotta, oppure di salvarla in una gallery proprietaria di dominio pubblico fornendo poi un embed code. In realtà il codice fornito presenta solo una piccola thumbnail (come nel primo esempio) che rimanda alla gallery.
TagCrowdinvece fornisce css/html puro da riutilizzare nel proprio sito.

Personalmente trovo Wordle più utile per articoli e gadget: si può stampare la tagcloud su PDF invece che su carta e riutilizzare l’immagine per una t-shirt o altro anche se non ho verificato la qualità effettiva dell’immagine prodotta.

TagCrowd è senza dubbio più utile per l’uso nel web dal momento che il codice di embed fornito rappresenta l’html puro della tagcloud.

Das ist mein Lieblingsgedicht. Eichendorff finde ich ja auch sonst wunderschön. Seine Gedichte laden einfach zum träumen und versinken ein.

Ich habe mal probiert, wie davon eine TagCloud aussieht.

Hat jemand von euch gestern die Schlagzeile der “Welt” gesehen? Dort war ein Bild mit Text als Wolke zu sehen.

Jetzt habe ich einfach mal ein bisschen gegoogelt, um das Tool zu finden, mit dem man solche Wolken erzeugen kann.

Und – Voilá! Ich hab ein paar Seiten  gefunden.

Im Allgemeinen fuktioniert das Generieren einer “Wolke” so:

Man gibt den Text ein oder die Webseite von der eine Wolke erstellt werden soll und klickt dann auf den Button drunter. Dann erhält man ein Bild und einen HTML Code um diese auch auf der eigenen Webseite anzeigen zu können.

Auf der Seite tag-cloud.de wird der Text ein eine interaktive Flash Animation umgewandelt. Es entsteht eine Art Kugel die man drehen kann.  Oder in eine HTML Grafik. Das Aussehen ist weiter nicht mehr veränderbar. Die Flash Animation kann auch nicht weiterverwendet werden. (Außer Download zum Eigengebrauch)

Bei HTML sieht das dann so aus:

Dann gibts noch tagcrowd.com auch hier funktioniert es wieder nach dem gleichen Prinzip. Es wird hier aber leider nur eine HTML Grafik angezeigt:

Zocht naar een manier om ook de statistieken rond Twitter zichtbaar te maken. TweetStats :: for michelran laat zien hoe openbaar alles is. Je kunt ook op andere accounts zoeken.

De grafieken zijn iets wat onduidelijk. Maar de Tweetcloud is fascinerend.  Meest gebruikte woorden (een, lastfm, 9829, en, twitter) lijkt een vorm van koelkastpoezie.

Hiervan kun je ook een Wordle van maken.

Een tagcloud dus. Valt me mee, dat het woordje IK de boventoon niet voert. Bloggen en twitteren is toch een vorm van ego publishing.

Ik heb alleen geen idee wat een twoosh is. En vrees dat als ik dat wel weet, niemand mij meer kan verstaan.

Scarcely over my rush of excitement at discovering tagcrowd and the much prettier wordle and analysing various texts (including the contents of this blog) with it, I am humbled to realise that I was introduced to exactly the same idea – word frequencies – by the head teacher at my primary school. This at the age of 10 (and that is a long time ago). It has stuck in my memory because he never taught us in the normal run of events. In retrospect I suppose he was guesting for a few lessons in order to do a sort of informal 11-plus on us. His chosen assessment tool was to take newspaper stories and calculate and compare word and letter frequencies.

By the way: how few verbs Tagcrowd brings up. That’s either because we all substantivise too much, or because we lazily only use common verbs which the software filters out.

Deze woordenwolk of “tag cloud” is gemaakt op basis van de tekst van het eindrapport dat ETC (www.etc-adviesgroepnederland.org) schreef voor de Gemeente Amersfoort. Het project dat we met dit rapport beschreven betrof het ondersteunen van drie matches op het gebied van zorglandbouw die allen voortkwamen uit een Stad Zoekt Boer evenement (Okt 2008) in Amersfoort. De zoekende partijen waren in dit geval een instelling voor verslavingszorg, een thuiszorg organisatie en een groep Turkse ouderen. Allen uit Amersfoort. Allen opzoek naar een goed aanbod vanuit platteland in de regio.

Het rapport zelf is niet publiek, maar wellicht doormiddel van deze tag cloud het project bij deze toch even onder de aandacht gebracht.

In part 1 I showed you how to create the basics for a 3D tagcloud in Silverlight. In this part I’ll show how to get the tags from your html for inserting it into a blog template, we’ll change the color of the tag based on the weight of the tag and let the hyperlink button actually function as a hyperlink (until now it does nothing when you click on it).

There are a few different ways you can pass or get information from the page the Silverlight control is hosted in:

• Set the initParams parameter in the Silverlight object definition
• Read the HtmlDocument in your Silverlight code
• Use JavaScript to call methods in your Silverlight code

You can only use the first option if your hosting your Silverlight application on the same domain. When using the hosting service on silverlight.live.com, no interaction between your application and HTML page is allowed.

For the second option you can use the HtmlPage object in your code to traverse through the HTML DOM, basic methods such as GetElementById are available.

The last option is the one I’ll be using in this post. To accomplish this you need to follow a few steps:

• Decorate your page class with a “ScriptableType” attribute
• Decorate the method you want to call with the “ScriptableMember” attribute and make sure it’s public
• Register your object in the HtmlPage
• Give your Silverlight object definition an id, so you can easily reference it from your JavaScript

The reason I’m going with this technique is the flexibility it provides when you want to reuse the tagcloud in other applications. Every blog engine has a different way to generate the HTML for a tagcloud, my blog just shows a list of tags.

To change the color based on the weight and set the url of the HyperlinkNutton we need to make some changes to the Tag3D object I showed you in the last post:

In this method we calculate the Color of the tag based on the weight. Then we add a new tag to the tagBlocks List<Tag3D>.

After calling this method a couple of times we need to place the tags and display them. I’ve changed the FillTags method shown in the previous post and renamed it to ProcessTags to make the name a bit more meaningful:

We need one more thing to make the methods callable from JavaScript. Register the object with the HtmlPage in the constructor:

I’m just attaching some code to the onclick of a button and hard-coding the tags. Normally you would handle the onload of the document (or better yet the $(document).ready in jQuery) and get your tags from the Html to pass them to the Silverlight object.

When I saw the wp-cumulus plugin by Roy Tanck, I thought it would be a great idea to implement the same sort of functionality in Silverlight. It’s hardly original but allows me to learn some parts of the Silverlight framework.

The components behind it are quite simple:

• Get (or send) the tags from your HTML page to the Silverlight usercontrol
• Render the tags so it looks 3D
• Create a method to rotate the tags based on the position of your mouse

Choosing a 3D library

The current version of Silverlight doesn’t include 3D functionality like WPF does through the Media3D namespace. Fortunately some developers implemented the same functionality in libraries for Silverlight. The main options I found were Kit3D and Axelerate3D. I decided to use the last one because that one mimics the RotateTransform3D class in WPF 3D the best (it contains a TryTransform method).

Rendering the tags

I decided to tackle the second item first, because if I wasn’t able to manage this, the other items wouldn’t be very useful.

To create a tag in 3D you need some basic functionality:

• A way to store it’s x, y and z coordinates
• A hyperlinkbutton to redirect to a page that shows all the items with that tag
• A textblock to display the tag

Then we need a way to make it look like it’s rendered in 3D. We do that by changing the fontsize and the opacity of the text. For that I created a method Redraw:

Placing the tags

To distribute the tags evenly over the sphere, we need some math. Luckily someone was way ahead of me and posted a useful blogentry on this subject (this technique is also used in the wp-cumulus plugin).

The following method creates and places the tags in the canvas:

At the moment the tags to render are hard-coded but we’ll sort that out in part 2.

Rotating the tags

To rotate the tags we will use the position of the mouse as a starting point. When the mousepointer is in the center the tagcloud will remain in the current position. Once the mouse is further away from the centerpoint we’ll increase the rotationspeed. The location of the mousepointer compared to the centerpoint will set the angle of the rotation.

First we will set the rotation when the tagcloud loads:

Here we set the rotation angle to 0 and the rotationaxis to the x-axis. When the mouse moves, we’ll change those parameters, so the rotation will have an effect:

Now that the rotationparameters are set we need to rotate the tags, or more precisely the centerpoint of the tag. To accomplish this we’ll make use of the Rendering event of the CompositionTarget object. This is called everytime the Silverlight plugin wants to render a new frame.

To relieve the CPU a bit, we’ll only rotate the tags if the rotation angle is higher than a threshold value. The actual transformation is accomplished by invoking the TryTransform method and passing it the current centerpoint of each tag.

At the moment the Silverlight control looks like this:

In the next part I’ll show you a way to dynamically set the tags, base their fontsize on the actual weight of the tag and actually use the hyperlink button.
