Today’s post is brought to you by the Edmonton Public Library, and their awesome catalogue. Se

Today’s post is brought to you by the Edmonton Public Library, and their awesome catalogue. Seriously, this thing is pretty darn great. First of all, using content from Amazon Web Services, you can see pictures of many of the books’ covers. But even better, there are a bunch of great features which allow users to interact with the library materials as well as with each other. In the screenshot below, I’ve highlighted some of these, using the example of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

From within the catalogue, you can rate the book, create tags, or write summaries and reviews. You can also flag the book and create lists of library resources including that item. You can check out other’s lists, tags, or comments (one reader, for example, suggests that you should skip the novel in favor of the BBC documentary. At least it wasn’t the Keira Knightly version. Hey, I bet the library has that too!) You can tweet the link, post it to facebook, or share it using a rather enormous array of tools, including many I’d never heard of. BallHype, anyone?

There’s even a link that says “buy this title” which takes you to the Amazon page for the book. In case you started out wanting something for free, but then decide you’d rather spend money on it. Is there anything you haven’t thought of, Edmonton?

Another feature is that users can actually interact with other users, see what others are reading, tagging, reviewing. You think Mr. Darcy is kind a pompus jerk? Hey, me too!

Now, since I am not an Edmonton Public Library cardholder, I’m not actually able to play with these tools, but I like the way the whole interface is set up. It looks pretty clear and easy to use, while still providing access to all the relevant features. It’s integrated into the catalogue alongside traditional catalogue fare such as location, call number, section, and the like, so there’s no need to search for the extra features. Which is to say that Edmonton Public Library patrons have it good, and I am filled with jealousy. VPL, take note.

My only real criticism (if you could even call it that) is that as the system seems pretty new, a lot of the resources haven’t been tagged or reviewed yet. However, this will likely change as time goes on.

In conclusion, two thumbs up, Edmonton. Your library catalogue almost makes me want to be there. Almost.

Niente male!

Ecco un video interattivo dell’ iniziativa social targata Ikea:

I have recently become a ‘flickr pro’ member and started using groups more meaningfully.

I have recently become a ‘flickr pro’ member and started using groups more meaningfully. It is a social networking site that taps into my unconscious, I feel. Frequently I am surprised to see my own connotations that spring up when presented with a new image uploaded by one of my contacts.

I love the daily flickr newsletter and those previews, the mix of them, 5 in a line maximum per contact, every day a visual treat. They trigger unknown associations in me. I click on the one that makes me most curious when I don’t have much time to explore all of them.

You never know, sometimes it’s light and shadows, details in the background, personal tags that add another layer of meaning, a comment by another viewer that is moving. It’s so intense the dynamic, like being pulled into a narrative that resembles a film. A few images tell a story but the story differs from what the person saw who took the shot which also differs from the real story. Interpretation of the interpretation.

Today, TooSix uploaded a simple neonsign saying Kreuzberg – the part in Berlin where I spent nearly 7 years – it made me do what expected least: a German poem-style memory unfolded, I typed without really thinking. I hadn’t been aware this was still living inside me. So fresh. Nothing’s ever lost. Nice. Grateful for the inspiration, thanks TooSix.

P.S: Tat tip to Mitch Joel (@mitchjoel), who shared the link to the video via Twitter.

Some of the most creative inventions of all time have come from simply re-imagining an existing prod

Some of the most creative inventions of all time have come from simply re-imagining an existing product and using it in new and inventive ways. One of the best examples in history is Arm & Hammer’s use of their baking soda product as a refrigerator deodorizer. After the war when housewives were introduced to the concept of pre-made and instant baking products, baking from scratch lost a lot of business, so in order to prevent going bankrupt, Arm & Hammer had to reinvent the way that consumers used their product.

Recently IKEA (one of my favorite places to buy furniture until I can afford the higher end merchandise) developed a Facebook campaign that reinvented the way companies approached social media campaigns. When everyone else is using a simple fan page and widgets, IKEA decided to use one of the most popular features of Facebook to bring user interaction.

The only thing I would say is that after visiting the Ikea corporate page, I would kind of hope they would have done some coverage over this campaign.

I’m a long-time Delicious.com user.

For anyone not familiar with it, Delicious is a “social bookmarking” site that stores your bookmarks on the web – which makes them accessible from anywhere with internet access. It’s “social” because anyone can see my public bookmarks, just as I can see theirs. You can also see what tags they used to describe the content they’re bookmarking, who and how many people have bookmarked a given web page, and more… all of which can lend a measure of credibility to information sources, and can help you spot trends.

Through the magic of RSS, Delicious also makes it easy to subscribe to bookmarks by user and/or tag, which can be pretty darned handy. For example, I recently subscribed to Chris Brogan’s “CaseStudy” tag… so every time Chris bookmarks a Case Study he finds useful… I will know about it. I’m practically hard-wired to the guy’s ginormous brain! How cool is that? You have to love the social web!

[If you're reading this and don't already know who Chris Brogan is... I like to think of him as the Santa Claus of Social Media. Check out @ChrisBrogan and ChrisBrogan.com.]

I suspect I am a fairly typical Delicious user. I bookmark tons of stuff on Delicious — more often than not — for some kind of ambiguous, unknown, unpredicted “future reference”. When tagging, I try to be as descriptive as possible, while attempting to predict what keywords I will be searching for later on. Over time, my tagging has grown a little sloppy (Typos, changes in the way I tag certain phrases, etc). I’ll get around to cleaning it all up one day. No. Really.

Anyway, to get to the point, my tagging habits have been changing lately, as I continue to strive to become more efficient and more productive. I thought some of you might be interested in the new methods I’ve developed for myself in the process:

Tagging with twitter names: Whether it’s the author of original content, someone I follow on twitter who was mentioned in an article, or the generous tweep who shared the link… I tend to connect good information to people. If they’ve written, inspired or shared good information… they’re bound to do so again.

The Back Burner: Several of my more recent Delicious tags are short-form names for projects I have on the back burner, or am preparing to start at some point in in the not-too-distant future. Unfortunately, tags like “tp360″ “teej” and “s101″ are pretty much meaningless to anyone who might happen to be browsing or searching my bookmarks (sorry!), but they will be invaluable to me when I get to the stage of organizing/planning the project in question.

If you’re a Delicious user, I would love to learn about your tagging habits, or how they are evolving. Please drop me a comment below.

OK, so for those of you who don’t live in the US of A, today is labor day and we are at the end of a 3-day holiday weekend. Although, here in Seattle, most of us spent the holiday hiding from the Monsoon-like rain that has fallen pretty constantly. This was a big bummer for those of us who usually attend the annual Bumbershoot Music Festival which is largely held outdoors underneath the Space Needle at Seattle Center. I have to confess that I only made it to one of the days – Saturday. But, I did manage to catch both Katy Perry and Cheryl Crow..so, all was not lost.

So, today, i have actually been catching up on some work and found this review of the OneNote tech preview. We haven’t spoken about the new version in a while – the beta is coming in November, so here’s a little something from Will Kelly to get you in the mood

After installing the Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview (msft), OneNote 2010 was the first application I fired up. While OneNote grew in popularity from Office 2003 to Office 2007, the impending release of OneNote 2010 is going to offer longtime users even more to like and, quite possibly, create some new fans.

This post is going to deep dive into some of the new enhancements you will enjoy when OneNote 2010 is publicly available.

Improved Ribbon. OneNote 2010 really benefits from the ribbon improvements in Office 2010. While the introduction of the Office ribbon drew some slings and arrows from long time Office users, the Office 2010 ribbon is greatly improved and smoothes over some of those rough edges.

Tagging. While previous OneNote versions always garnered praise for usability and organization options, OneNote 2010 adds tagging to the “Home” ribbon. You have the option to tag your important notes with predefined tags or ones you create yourself. This new option really complements the already strong organizational capabilities of OneNote notebooks.

Sharing Tools. OneNote gained its popularity as a note-taking and research tool. OneNote 2010 includes sharing tools to make it an even more effective for research, including the capability to email OneNote pages, support for multiple authors sharing notebooks, and page versioning. With OneNote 2010 due to be available in more editions of Microsoft Office, both geographically dispersed and traditional project teams should be able to take advantage of OneNote collaboration.

Improved Drawing Tools. While I am a big OneNote user, I still rely on an old school yellow legal pad and pen for taking notes in meetings. The reason is that my work as a technical writer means I do a lot of drawing of process flow diagrams and such. The OneNote 2010 drawing tools offer the drawing options I need so I can finally leave my yellow legal pad and pen behind.

Audio Tools. While you can’t escape client meetings, you now have the option to record meetings directly into OneNote (provided your laptop has a microphone) and then search through the audio files later.

Office Integration. When I first read the news about OneNote joining the Microsoft Office suite proper, my hope was for better OneNote/Office application integration: the upcoming Office 2010 is working to deliver on it. While I try to keep my expectations simple, I am already enjoying the Linked Notes feature, which enables you to keep notes on saved documents. There is also the capability to send OneNote pages directly to Microsoft Word. I was also excited to see the capability to attach documents to OneNote pages because I can see me using it to attach drafts, research and other project artifacts to keep my projects better organized.

Final Thoughts
While the Web Component of OneNote 2010 isn’t available for review yet, I see it as an addition could directly challenge Evernote and should drive innovation in the note-taking market. Additionally, just as Microsoft is bringing Outlook to OS X, expectations are going to rise that access to Microsoft needs to make OneNote available on the Mac.

OneNote 2010 is a standout in the Office 2010 Technical Preview and I look forward to seeing the final version.

HAVE YOU TRIED THE TECH PREVIEW FOR ONENOTE YET? IF SO, WHAT DID YOU THINK?

Introduction If you are building software and want to release that software at regular intervals the

Introduction

If you are building software and want to release that software at regular intervals then why not tag each release in Mercurial? That way you can very easily rollback to that version of the software at any time. Whats more is that you can use your own tags rather than trying to remember the mercurial revision number that was current at the time of release.

There are many approaches to software versioning which will not be covered here. Check out this wikipedia article on software versioning for more details on the different approaches. The purpose of this article is to apply the versioning as a tag in your mercurial repository.

Apply a tag in mercurial

When using mercurial, you must always tag after a commit. So if you know that you want to tag your current working directory, you must commit it first and then tag it. Given this it obviously makes it very easy to tag a commit that you might have made a long time ago in the past. Bear this in mind when using the tag command in mercurial and you will understand clearly how this feature can be used.

This is how you would tag a revision in a mercurial repository, first decide what revision you want to tag and then run the following command. In this example it will tag revision number 45 with “2.0.5″

hg tag -r 45 2.0.5

This command automatically commits this tag, so if you run “hg tip” in your terminal, you will see something like the following:

changeset: 51:209937087918
tag: tip
user: Darren Jensen
date: Sun Nov 22 13:10:47 2009
summary: Added tag 2.0.5 for changeset b50b86512aac

Note that the changeset for “tip” is 51:209937087918 and the comment is “Added tag 2.0.5 for changeset b50b86512aac” (this comment is also added automatically by mercurial by the way). Given that I asked mercurial to apply the tag to revision 45, you can easily see that it is a commit made a while ago. The changeset indicated in the comment (“b50b86512aac”) does indeed refer to revision 45.

Use a tag in mercurial

So how to use this tag going forward? Here are a couple of ideas.

Use it to see the commit info at that time using the log command as follows:

hg log -r 2.0.5

This will return the log entry that is associated with that tag, so in our example it would return the entry for changeset 45:b50b86512aac, as follows:

changeset: 45:b50b86512aac
tag: 2.0.5
user: A Developer
date: Tue Jul 21 14:27:50 2009
summary: Made some serious changes to the application and deployed it to production

Use it to clone the repository to the tag point (note that the tag itself would not be included since that is added after this point). So if you do a “hg tip” on this cloned repository, then your would see the log entry for changeset 45 but the tag and the changeset that commit the tag will not be there (changeset 45 will have the tag “tip” in this case!).

hg clone -r 2.0.5 somerepo

Check out the Mercurial wiki for more details regarding tagging in mercurial, including how to deal with tagging conflicts, local tags (as opposed to “regular” tags which is covered in this article), removing tags and more.

Ohh.. saya nak tulis jugak, walaupun terpaksa berulang kali tutup dan buka skrin ni, bila ada orang datang ~terutamanya bila Project Manager saya datang! ehehehe…

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cuaca

Lewat kebelakangan ini, Malaysia dilanda hujan sepanjang hari, kan? Saya sangka hanya Pantai Timur sahaja, tapi hampir kesemua tempat pun melaporkan keadaan yang sama, jadi terpaksalah saya akui, Malaysia sekarang mengalami musim tengkujuh.

walking in the rain..

Memang sakit hati jugalah saya rasa.

Kalau gambar saya buruk pun, saya pasrah saja. Ahahaa.. memang saya pun bukanlah cantik sangat, cuma comel je!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kerja

Anyway, ingat tak saya pernah cerita pasal Rain? Ok, kalau nak tengok gambar dia dengan lebih jelas, sila klik sini, blog si Farah tu!
Let me just say, that I am thoroughly satisfied with my new HootSuite add-on!! Like I had mentioned

Let me just say, that I am thoroughly satisfied with my new HootSuite add-on!! Like I had mentioned in my earlier post, I recently signed up for HootSuite and it has become my favorite Twitter client!!!

And yesterday, HootSuite created an add-on for Firefox!! The add-on is a mini Hootlet dashboard, but what makes it so grand is that you don’t need to copy and paste links anymore, and no more switching back-n-forth from page to page working to set up your next tweet…

Just click on the cute little Owly icon and it will shorten the URL, add descriptive text, then send it to any or all of your twitter accounts!!

WOW, I mean, WOW… how can it get any better!!

If you download the add-on, I must tell you that the HootSuite icon will not show up after restarting Firefox. It’s a little different from most Firefox add-ons in that you will have to manually place it onto your browser.

I’ll tell you how to do it…

Go to View > toolbars > customize > and drag-n-drop the HootSuite owl icon. Then, you’re good to go!!

Check out HootSuite here, if ya like… HootSuite

I will say, the one bad thing with HootSuite is that it does not yet allow you to view or manage your followers. I’ve read that they are working on some ideas to get this feature into the client. But, as I said before, HootSuite is really awesome if your goal is to share with the friends you’ve already got…

Tagging is a large part of how Last.FM tracks your interest in music. Through the “Like” and “Ban” buttons that accompany the radio station, users can put an emphasis on which songs they like and don’t like. Through using the tags, and other attributes, of each song, Last.FM can better track which songs it thinks you enjoy the most. This, obviously, helps users create their own navigation through Last.FM.

I decided to change the title of my blog once more. It is important to acknowledge my librarian root

I decided to change the title of my blog once more. It is important to acknowledge my librarian roots, yet nod to my divergent interests.

In the Learning Commons at Lake Washington Technical College we are piloting an embed project using Delicious to create, effectively, homemade LibGuides. Using existing collection resources we can create a link roll using specific tags associated with programs and class numbers. This permits us to obtain an javascript embed code, which can be given to the instructor who can then paste this same code into their Angel course shell. Any number of items can be gathered into this, including YouTube videos, PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations, and many more.
This method of bookmarking our existing resources (e.g., articles in journals that can be found in our electronic collection) permits compliance with copyright and helps faculty create a remotely accessible course reserve system. Primarily, I think it will be addressed in the following ways:

Create collection inventories by bookmarking periodical and ebook publications at the item level. If these materials are consistently tagged at the item-level, then collection inventories could be created on the fly. The only foreseeable issue would be items added after a first sweep through might not be included, but routine updates could address this issue.

Create course-specific reserves, incorporating material from our existing On-line subscription databases, as well as freely available web content (e.g., videos, audio content, documents).

In effect, this system would create embedded LibGuides, since the listings would be held within the course shell and students would access this information concurrent with their work in Angel.

The Delicious link roll project would look like this: https://lwtclearningcommons.pbworks.com/Delicious-Rolls-%28Library-Database-Mashup%29

I think the idea is to create back ups on the Learning Commons Wiki site, which will serve as a safety net in case Angel goes down.

In the initial phase of this project, I had lots of questions (see comments section, “New Tags for Embed Project”), many which will be answered over the life of the project. This is an interesting project, because it is an attempt at creating resource lists and an electronic reserve system for faculty and students from an existing On-line and freely available technology, Delicious.

I still do have lots of questions that need answers. Using this system of creating electronic reserves for courses are we in compliance with copyright? Are there any privacy and copyright issues involved in making course-level content discoverable? Where does this system intersect with the library catalog system? Is there a way to bookmark library records for items currently in our collection?

I think these are important questions to consider and resolve as this project moves forward and I am excited to participate in such a project.
