While we have had a couple small storms already (I missed both), today is the first day of Tahoe’s first big one. This morning it was cold and windy (last night it got down to 1 degree) and the sun was out. Later the wind really picked up, and I saw the first bits of snow racing horizontal over the street. As the wind died the snow picked up and now we have a few inches. I just shoveled the driveway (surprisingly, I really enjoyed that) and while at the general store earlier there was talk about the many accidents that have already occurred on Hwy 80. A girl I know was the victim of one of the accidents – she is doing fine, but I think she totaled her truck. So far, my Forester has been awesome in the snow. I feel very safe, and I drive very slow – to the dismay of the locals stuck behind me! It’s so beautiful outside and so quiet. I have put up Christmas lights inside and it is warm and cozy. The storm is supposed to last through Saturday…

PS – I love to put hot sauce in my hummus.

There hasn’t been too much snow up here yet, but there was enough for Northstar to open a few lifts. I am not your pro snow boarder and I pretty much just cruise down the blues. There were not a lot of people there – which was great for me. It gave me the chance to regain my bearings. At one point I started thinking I could go as fast as everyone else, and that is when I started catching my edge and falling – hard! Even so, it was a great first day!! It’s supposed to snow all week next week, starting Sunday!

this saturday also heralded another first for all of us here at basb, for the first time in fourteen seasons, we had our first november trip. now, brian has said that in years past, november trips were an either/or situation; either we had enough people or we had enough snow, never both. so you can imagine all of our excitement when this year we were able to send off a bus on november 21st! oddly enough, i can’t tell you too much about it as none of us in the office got to go on the inaugural trip, as brian was busy ski-dazzling in sacramento, i was busy shopping at the burton sample sale and emily was busy getting ready to be let down by da’ bears on sunday. :) Luckily for all of us, we made sure to send our trusty blogger-friends Jodi and Dimitri. jodi and dimitri have both guest-blogged for us in previous seasons and this year will be no different. definitely bookmark Jodi’s Ski Tripper blog, your one-stop-blog for all things tahoe, check out her flickr account for great shots from the trips, heck even follow dimitry’s ski bus twitter:backodabus.

…a bouncing baby supply guy

jodi and dimitry aren’t the only ones helping me out with marketing this year. we’re super-stoked to announce that our office family is now complete; the final member of the dream team was recruited just this morning. that’s right, after a grueling day of interviews, we found our new operations assistant/supply guy/jack of all trades brad. he’s a local that hails from lafayette, he’s worked a few seasons at a ski shop, and like myself and his predecessor paul, he’s a snowboarder! brad will be starting after the holiday, but we are very excited to have him on board the basb crew. (i’m especially excited to have another boarder in the shop.)

once you pop…you just can’t stop….

finally the most exciting news: if you’re sad you missed all the fun on saturday, we have another pre-season trip scheduled to northstar for saturday nov 28!! tickets are on sale now, $89 for ride/lift ticket/wine for adults and only $59 for just the ride up!!! check ‘em out and we’ll be seeing you up there!

have a happy txg from all of us at basb and we’ll see you on the slopes!

I was excited to ski my first day of the season at Northstar on Saturday. For many snowboarders and skiers, it was their first taste of snow this winter. Squaw Valley, Heavenly and Northstar opened with very limited runs on Saturday but with conditions that Northstar reports were the best since the 1994-95 season, so there were no complaints! Everyone on the lifts marveled that they were actually skiing or boarding before Turkey Day.

Northstar was making snow on Saturday to add to its 3 inches of base.

More than eight inches had fallen overnight on Friday, and we were greeted by bluebird and powder conditions when the Bay Area Ski Bus pulled into the empty parking lot at Northstar (I’ve only seen this once before, and that was in midsummer!).

More people arrived–mostly boarders–and headed for the four lifts that were open–the gondola, Vista Express, Arrow Express and Big Easy (which, as the name implies, leads to the bunny hill). I rode the gondola up to Arrow Express over to Vista Express, sticking to the few runs that dropped from the top of those two lifts. There was a terrain park off to the side of one of the runs that was open.

I stayed to the trail, because we were warned to stay out of the trees, as the resort only has 3 inches of base. To add to its base, Northstar was busy making snow with its snow guns shooting out plumes of snow in the morning until temperatures became too warm.

The Bay Area Ski Bus is scheduled to make its next trip on December 5. But if conditions continue to improve, my guess is that they will ride up sooner, so keep checking their website.

Kurna, mam dziś dobry dzień bo obejrzałem dobry film. Wrong Turn at Tahoe to klasyczne do bólu kino sensacyjne.

Trafiają do znajomego informatora. Gdy dowiadują się, że niejaki Frankie Tahoe nosi się z zamiarem zaje*ania Vincenta ruszają do swojego bossa i organizują mały najazd na siedzibę Tahoe. Jakie to fajne i prawdziwe.

Wront Turn At Tahoe to żaden hit, czy arcydzieło.

Squaw Valley has an audacious event planned to celebrate the simultaneous anniversaries of their 60th year in operation, and 50th year since they hosted the Olympics. The celebration will be held Saturday, November 21, beginning at 2 pm.

Kicking off the festivities on opening day will be an historic BASE jump by JT Holmes. BASE (an acronym derived from Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth) jumping is a potentially high risk activity where the jumper leaps from a fixed object high above the ground with a packed parachute, which is then deployed at the critical moment.

This historic BASE jump will be done legally and is a central part of the 60th anniversary festivities to be held on Squaw Valley’s opening day of the ski season. Holmes will perform the BASE jump from a point just below the Cable Car’s Tower 1.

According to Savannah Cowley of Squaw Valley, Shane McConkey had originally been asked to perform the jump. Sadly, McConkey, a greatly admired professional skier, died last year at the age of 40 during a ski-BASE jump in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy on March 26, 2009, after failing to deploy his parachute due to a separate equipment malfunction associated with his skis. Nancy Cushing, owner of Squaw Valley, asked Holmes to jump in his place to honor McConkey and celebrate 60 years of skiing at Squaw Valley.

Holmes, a good friend of McConkey, is a professional skier based out of Squaw Valley. Holmes did his first BASE jump with McConkey and the two became jumping partners. Holmes has been featured in numerous ski films and, like McConkey, has been an innovator in ski-BASEing, where BASE jumping is combined with skiing.

Jonny Moseley skiing in Tahoe

Ski-BASEing was invented after the 1977 James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me”, starring Roger Moore, featured a stunt involving a skier jumping off a cliff and parachuting to the ground. This first ski-BASE jump was an actual jump performed by Squaw Valley’s Rick Sylvester on a slope in Canada on Baffin Island. The stunt intrigued adventurous skiers and BASE jumpers like McConkey and Holmes, and a new extreme sport was created. Video footage of a successful McConkey ski-BASE jump will surely take your breath away.

Jonny Moseley, a moguls champion and Olympic gold medalist in the 1998 Olympics held in Nagano, Japan, will be hosting the celebration on the KT Sundeck from 2-3:45 pm. Moseley was a member of the Squaw Valley Freestyle Ski Team when he won the first Junior National title in Freestyle Skiing, and joined the U.S. Ski Tem at 18. He can be seen skiing and heard narrating the current release of the Warren Miller movie, Dynasty, which can be seen in venues around the country. Holmes is also featured in the movie.

Join the festivities at Squaw Valley on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.

2:00 pm: Mighty Mite Parade and Cake Lighting

2:10 pm: Champagne Toast by Nancy Cushing

New Listings: Total of 10 new listings, 4 condos, 3 PUDs or Planned Unit Developments and 3 Single Family Homes.

Price Changes: Total of 13 price changes with 12 reductions and 1 increase. Not sure what kind of market 910 Harold thinks we are in, but a $100K price increase is quite substantial. The price reduction on 868 Rosewood Circle is a great deal and has been added to our Hot Buy List. The upgrades on this are incredible and what a great price for like new. Also the condo on Oriole dropping to $280 and change for 1700 sqft is fantastic.

Escrows: Only 2 new escrows this week both in Single Family Homes. Of these new escrows 1011 Apollo goes back into escrow, originally listed upwards of $1.5Mil and now down to $1.1 and change. Also, 660 Tumbleweed listed at $849K is in a release clause which means they have to sell something else in order to buy this property. Sometimes a long shot and sometimes it works out GREAT! Good luck.

Sales: Total of 4 sales, 1 PUD and 3 Single Family Homes. We cannot believe it! 907 Tyner actually got $1.1Mil, this house had a crazy floorplan, but some incredible views. We cannot wait to see what they do with it! Vision!!!

Market Rejections: This week 13 properties were rejected by the market. 6 condos, 2 PUDs and 5 Single Family Homes.
