October 7, 2012 Yeah, it’s over twenty minutes. It was ten when I finished editing, really chopping the final segment down I might add, and I decided being around twenty minutes long was allowed, even if it was technically over, especially on weeks like this, and when I spent the entire extra nine seconds explaining how I’m stopping because we’re going on too long. Am I glad tomorrow’s a federal holiday. I need the rest!

By the way, anyone know a good freeware audio editor? I’m about to run out a free trial and trying to find one earlier really did drive me bats. I need it to be able to perform simple tasks, such as attaching .wma files to each other consecutively(which Audacity seemed strangely unable to do…), and then have sections removed. Being able to amplify(I actually amplified the Medal Winners open section on this file, first time I’ve ever done that) and tell exactly where in the timeline certain sounds are would be good bonuses. Meanwhile, I at least had the trial software for the all important Grand Prix week episode: May 21-27, 2012

Much news this week, and I was distracted by the playoffs, but at this moment in time I prefer to be distracted from the the playoffs, so…

Somewhat sad to see the end of Evora & Ladwig, but at their ages, we knew it might happen. And at least we get to keep him, provided he finds a partner(he better find one quick, though; he doesn’t this summer and there’s a huge danger he’ll stop looking). More sad to hear Lauri Bonacorsi & Travis Mager split.

CD just hit Stars’ “Calender Girl.” I now want to make a montage of Alissa to this song. Though I suppose then I’d have to watch her programs from Nice, which I don’t want to do. The life of the artist…as I said in my Worlds entry, she might very well be back at Worlds next year with a chance at redemption, and I kind of really hope it happens. She and Ashley can do it right next year and then Gracie Gold can join them in Sochi.

I have, on the other hand, now seen both Patrick Chan & Daisuke Takahashi’s long programs, courtesy NBC’s recap show. And I will say this: I absolutely understand why the former won. I’m a little more uncertain as to whether it was absolutely right, or maybe just not caring enough to feel whether it was or wasn’t, but noone should be ranting about Chanadian politics or taking the judges out and shooting them: this is not nearly that bad. As offenses against justice go? This one’s barely a tap against the head. Then again, I still haven’t bothered with their shorts, so…

Missed the first hour of said show, so missed the ice dance, for which I’m kind of sorry, but also Jeremy’s skate, for which I’m not; I fear I might find that more painful to watch than even Alissa might be. On reading he plans to keep one program last year, I hope it’s the long; he’s done the short justice, but he hasn’t skated that long clean yet and unless he final does at the World Team Trophy it would be tragic to lose the program without getting at least one flawless 2010 Nationals-style skate out of it.

Find I’m in no hurry to seek out the top free dances, anyway, simply because, well, I’ve seen them already. Tessa and Scott and Meryl and Charlie were wonderful all year; there’s not much further up they can go. Though one program I have enjoyed seeing performed for the first time is Nathalie & Fabian’s Ex:

At this time last night, I was seriously considering if I should stop following all sports all toget

At this time last night, I was seriously considering if I should stop following all sports all together; it seemed then all any of them did was break my heart. I’m still not entirely sure I was wrong. I’m aware I ought to be happier for all the bronze medalists; they were all people I hoped to see medal at Worlds at some point. Maybe I will be, once I get over the heartbreak that was Adam, Jeremy, & Alissa’s fates, and our getting the third spot back in neither singles discipline. Also my annoyance at Alena Leonova medaling, which twists the knife in, if only because certain Russian fans will now become unbearable. Though it could’ve been worse; it could’ve been Michal Brezina.

I suppose also I ought to be indignant on behalf of Daisuke Takahashi. But when I still haven’t seen either his or Patrick Chan’s performance since I was too mad to watch at the time, still don’t particularly feel like seeking them out, and therefore have only tweets to go on which seemed to argue both sides of the debate, I find I don’t really give a *censored.* I’m more interested in the question of what happens now, if the ISU decides the booing crowd is bad enough for publicity to do something. I’ve the sinking feeling they’ll do the wrong thing, whatever they do. Hopefully it won’t be to puff up Plushenko more; that’ll just make the problem worse.

An even more interesting question, I suppose, relates to everyone now writing Alissa Czisny off completely. The problem is, it’s one thing the men, with both Evan and Johnny looking serious in their comebacks(though I suspect without the third spot, Johnny won’t make it back to Worlds). But while people have even been making comments about how Kimmie could come back if she wanted to, there’s noone intending to come back, and while for a moment on Twitter people started fretting if we’d even have two spots next year, thanks to Ashley that was taken care of, and even assuming her for one of them(and remember, Alissa was looking equally good this time last year), who gets the other one? Mirai’s a dicey prospect at best. Gracie Gold is young and untested. Christina Gao’s yet to prove she can go the distance. None of the other junior prospects has done well enough to be relied on. Even if Rachael continues skating for the fun of it, those days are obviously over for her. The most obvious choice would be Agnes Zawadzki, but there’s no denying she still has major consistency issues, or Caroline Zhang, but will the judges ever fully embrace her again? And you can’t see either of them making top five at Worlds, not really; with Alissa or Mirai or maybe Gracie that’s at least a possibility. We’ve got one more year to fix this before the next Olympics; the right person must be sent to Worlds next year, but when there probably wasn’t a right person this year anyway, then, well, who?

No real reaction to pairs or ice dance, oddly; maybe because I’ve been at work for almost all of both. Maybe later.

Since suspending my news broadcasts I’ve lost all track of time. But now we’re at risk

Since suspending my news broadcasts I’ve lost all track of time. But now we’re at risk for losing Nathalie & Fabian, and have lost our last Finn(so now even if Laura Lepisto does come back, how far can she make it?), and perhaps I should try some predictions:

Men: Or, who gets the bronze? I’ve decided to go with what I want to happen there, my predictions for the podium: Patrick Chan, Daisuke Takahashi, Jeremy Abbott. Also looking forward to: holding up hope Adam lands the quad lutz. Though I’ll settle for them getting that third spot back.

Ladies: So having predicted Jeremy to make the podium, do I dare predict Ashley? But actually, I’m going to be daring and predict Carolina drives everyone crazy by winning more or less fair and square, but I don’t dare put Mao any lower than 2nd, so who does that leave for bronze? After Challenge Cup I’m wary of predicting Alissa, so it’s Ashley, Leonova, or one of the two Japanese girls. Murakami might not be ready just yet, and Leonova’s still a mite unpredictable, but the kind of year Suzuki’s having, I think she’ll take the edge, so: Carolina Kostner, Mao Asada, Akiko Suzuki. If Ashley gets stuck in 4th, hopefully Alissa will make the top 9. Also looking forward to: is there even a slight chance Ksenia proves everyone wrong? It’s probably her last chance…

Pairs: And the questions for both the couples competitions are which order the top two finish in, and then who wins the bronze. I suspect Volosozhar & Trankov are more likely to finally pass Savchenko & Szolkowy next year than this one, and the Germans have such a glorious free skate this year this ought to be their fourth title. Bronze is a thorny question indeed, but Duhamel & Radford’s jumps, sadly, are too unreliable, and for some reason I suspect neither Pang & Tong or Kavaguti & Smirnov will be up to it, so it’s Sui & Han by default: Savchenko & Szolkowy, Volosozhar & Trankov, Sui & Han. Also looking forward to: hope Duhamel & Radford skate that long program well, though.

Ice Dance: And even if they make it, Nathalie Pechelat & Fabian Bourzat may be vulnerable, but it would be too depressing to predict a second disappointment in a row for them. As for those two above them, after Four Continents, I have the general feeling Meryl & Charlie have had their Worlds on top, and cede it now. Hey, they had it, and that’s the important part, right? Virtue-Moir, Davis-White, Pechelat-Bourzat. Also looking forward to: the other two Canadian teams! I suppose if Weaver & Poje did take the bronze, I wouldn’t mind that much.

At one point yesterday I thought this might prove undoable, because all the videos for China & Korea arrived on Sunday, and it was a long process watching enough of them to get news without the scoring protocols available(or even the scores in the case of Korea, though at least I had the placements). But after a final scramble when I finally got the top three from Lyon, I finished it this morning and thankfully was able to leave it converting to usable format immediately before going to work, though uploading after stumbling home through the snow took a little longer than expected

Quite frankly, when I have as little footage from two nationals as I did this week, the least this damn vid should be able to do with fewer clips thus used is save without complications. But no, it would save to one format this week, and in the process I lost large parts of the voice track from the second half; I pretty much gave up on annotations during the Bolero segment and again towards the end. I actually got an iPad for Christmas with a camera built in; perhaps I shall be driven to use it not by my vids being blocked, but by the sound continually being dropped. Except I don’t know if that would even help.

It was the kind of Monday today where I put down a page of a government form I’d just printed to dry, glanced at my Twitter, and found out Bruce Boudreau had just been fired. Though I actually did much of the audio recording over the weekend; just about the only section I recorded this morning is the one where I mention I’m recording Monday morning; I had to hold on that one, of course, in case the situation changed overnight. Next week, I’ll be working and everything possible will be done on Sunday(except the Skate Canada Challenge ends then, so next week’s video might be a late posting). Annotations to this should be done tonight. I think.

I’m finally finishing at a decent hour again! Though it helped that most of the NHK Trophy was over by the time Saturday morning was. Of course there was a bit of worry when NHK went blocking most of the ladies’ short, but they left more than enough for me to work with.

I actually started this one Sunday, in hope I might figure out some way to get most of the work for these done on the weekends since I may not that long from now find myself working full time. I haven’t yet, but at least this one got uploaded early enough I was willing to risk using some recap footage from this week’s Battle of the Blades, though after seeing the performances blocked this morning I wasn’t using footage from they themselves. Thankfully it wasn’t blocked. It’s not annotated yet; that’ll be done after Dancing With the Stars. ETA: Finished the annotations, discovered in the process I forgot the last two titles. Well, it wasn’t like they were completely necessary…

It seems this is continually thinking up ways to plague me; this week after I’d labored a record ten hours on it, the video of course refused to save normally, and this time the sound merely didn’t get garbled; it outright dropped a couple of times! And coming up this week is the first regional results(I originally included a couple short program results this week, but there simply wasn’t room for them). I was way too tired to post this last night, so posting it now instead:

One would think that after a hectic weekend of continually watching the Quebec Summer Skate because

One would think that after a hectic weekend of continually watching the Quebec Summer Skate because the Thornhill stream kept having problems, and a video chock full of too many headlines where I nonetheless couldn’t resist the golden opportunity to yell “MAY DAY! MAY DAY!”, it would have been events enough. And when the video wouldn’t save at first, that should have definitely been enough. But then when I saved it to a huge-ass DV-AVI file and attempted to convert a smaller one, it wouldn’t convert. I finally sweated out the ETA on the iPodME steadily going in the wrong direction, freeing up computer memory in a desperate attempt to get it finished before it stalled, and finally had a file YouTube would take. At least it didn’t get blocked anywhere(it’s embarrassing to report on All That Skate without any footage of Yu-Na, but whatever keeps you viewable), but I think the sound problems must be in the DV-AVI creation, and I ended up spending another half hour adding annotations where information had gotten too garbled, panicking when I thought they hadn’t saved, and finally realized I needed to click on the Publish button. So here it is, and I am going to bed.

This week’s lesson: always make sure your microphone is turned on. I spent half an hour trying to record, continually getting derailed by the names of the Russian pair commonly known as I&M(spelling their names gives me a headache too, but I didn’t have to for this vid), and then nearly melted down over the word “congelado,” only to discover I’d wasted my time because it hadn’t recorded and I had to do the whole thing over. Though at least I got off relatively easy with SBSi this week; they didn’t even block me in Korea!(Though they did in Japan. Also Malaysia, which is sad because this may be the only video I make that mentions their skaters for a long while).
